morning. >> even in the studio we are. >> yeah. it's going to be cold, not just this morning but the next several mornings. santa rosa, the coldest temperature on the map. make sure you are dressed in layers because we will have a mild afternoon. at 45 in hayward, and 45 in san francisco. in dublin, as you get ready to head out, it's a clear view. we are in the upper 40s right now. we stay in the 40s through 8:00, then it gradually warms up with a lot of sunshine today. expect a high of 68 degrees. still kind of cool for this time of year even. we are going to see upper 60s and low 70s, and, mike, hopefully, everything is looking nice and smooth. it's looking nice and smooth, but that does not mean everything is clear. a smooth flow across 92, and that's good. the flat section, and the incline, that's west in this

direction. there's something going on in san francisco off of highway 101. we will check on that. 101 in the south bay, typical slowing in san josé, and that's easing off now. it will build again in about half an hour. we do have an issue over here, walnut creek. this issue here just past the walnut creek interchange, a cinder block on 680. hope to get that cleared. back to you. we continue to follow breaking news in maine. authorities say up to 20 people are dead following shootings at a bar and bowling alley. it happened last night in the city of lewiston. >> here's a live look for you. one of the two very active scenes this morning. we also know up to 50 people injured. sources say some were injured during a stampede as they were running for their lives. that tragedy first unfolded at 7:00 p.m. local time, and today

many schools and officers are shutdown as residents are being told to stay home if possible with their doors locked. >> there were two locations, one was a bowling alley and the other is a restaurant. this is the scene outside the bowling alley. authorities are expected to update that investigation sometime around 7:30 hour time this morning. >> that statewide manhunt under way right now. the person of interest the man you see here, 40-year-old robert card, and authorities believe he's an army reservist and firearms instructor. let's go to brie jackson this morning. >> good morning. we are learning more about the person of interest here. police say robert card has approximately 20 years of

military service and was reported to have been committed to a mental health facility for two weeks over the summer. at least 15 to 20 people were killed and dozens more injured in the mass shooting in lewiston, maine. >> this is something you never expect. >> the shootings happened in two locations, a bowling alley and restaurant. >> out of nowhere, he just came in and there was a loud pop and i thought it was a balloon, had my back turned to the door. as soon as i turned and saw he was holding a weapon, i booked it. >> brandon hid behind the lanes on top of the pin machines until police arrived. officers named the 40-year-old card as a person in the attack. he is a trained firearms instructor and believed to be an army reserve and recently reported mental health issues

up at 7:00, right after "today in the bay." our other top stories developing overnight, israel is intensifying its war on hamas who targeted raids inside gaza and preparing the world for what happens next. >> the united nations, they are going to have an emergency meeting in just two hours. it's the tenth such session focused on the escalating war between israel and hamas that has civilians on both sides of the conflict stuck in the middle. this is the first video of the aftermath in gaza city where rescue crews are searching for survivors. the gaza health ministry said the death toll in this attack is greater than 750 people in just 24 hours. we have no way to know how many are civilians and how many are

combatants. this is from israel overnight as there was a raid launched in the northern part of the gaza strip. they used banks in preparation for what they are calling, quote, the next stage of combat. in a statement the idf claims they hit missile launch posts to prepare the battlefield. to be clear, though, this is not the full-scale invasion that israel has been threatening. last night the prime minister of israel, benjamin netanyahu, said the ground invasion is coming but only israel will know when and how it will happen. president biden asked israel to pause the offensive to allow humanitarian aid for the civilians of gaza to get in, but if the international calls for a cease-fire are any indication, the president's pause likely won't happen. the biggest hospital in gaza is in the middle of the air strike zone and is running out of fuel and water and medicine as more

that pedestrian was running across the interstate when that accident happened. traffic was impacted for a short time. all lanes are back open. it's 6:08. we have been watching the trial of bankman-fried. he may take the stand in his own defense as he tries to avoid decades in prison. scott mcgrew is following this for us as well. the key word is he may take the stand. >> of course. yes, bankman-fried was accused of fraud, and we are getting the language of may and should take the stand from his lawyers, laura. they are writing submissions to the judge saying should our client testify, so we can't say for sure up until the last moment if he will testify. we expect he will use the advice of counsel statements, but it's the judge would bar

tell my story, which is interesting. >> thank you. let's take a live look this morning near communications hill in san josé. a dark and early start to our morning. meteorologist, kari hall, is looking at what we can expect. >> it's going to be a nice afternoon, but we start out chilly. outside in oakland as you head off to work, we are already seeing a lot of people out the door. pleasant hill, starting out at 45 degrees. take a look at the recovery we will have. for the afternoon and even after a cool start, we will head for the upper 60s and low 70s. 68 in fremont. 69 in los gatos and novato. as we take it into the day tomorrow, really not much of a change. some of our coastal areas get cooler, and as you make saturday plans expect it to be a touch warmer with the low 70s.

categories so schools can keep them away from kids. some school systems or states have restrictions on what books can be in school, books involving race or sexuality or gender, and so scholastic started to put the books in categories to help school systems stay away from them and about justice ketanji brown jackson. even a book called "i am ruby bridges" written ruby bridges. as long as we are talking about equality, there's a equal payday and it's the length of time the

median woman has to work into the next year to make what the median man makes of this year. i did the math and worked out the figures. today is the opposite of equal payday for women. it's equal payday for men. this is the day we have to work until this year to make the money that women will make by working all the way through the end of the year. in other words, the data shows the average man could go home at the end of the day today and not come back to work until 2024 and end up with the same money for the same work. now, lots of economists have issues with some of the data. >> uh-huh. >> particularly when you are talking about not the same work, but just men and women. but i like the equal payday, the women one, and the men one you may not like so much, because it does focus in on the problem. that doesn't come until next year. >> isn't that unbelievable?

nice listings for that agent. >> cha-ching. >> the views are beautiful, and pretty much throughout the bay area, you have beautiful views. >> yeah, and it's going to be clear. we will see everything, no worries about the fog over the golden gate bridge. the cooler temperatures are settling in, and the wind is calming down and the temperatures are dipping, especially for the north bay. take a look at santa rosa. we are at 38 degrees. yes, you need the layers for today, because it's a cold start and we are mostly seeing mid to upper 40s and mid-50s. we will also be much cooler for the past several days. make sure the kids have a jacket on their way out the door. it will be 5 to 11 degrees cooler. take a look at where we are headed for today. upper 60s and even reaching 70

degrees in east san josé. gilroy, 70 degrees this afternoon. after this chilly start it will be so comfortable for the middle of the afternoon. it takes a while for us to get up to 71 in concord. i think we will hit that temperature around 3:00 or 4:00 and then temperatures dip once again. we are looking at upper 60s for san mateo and san francisco in the mission district. going beyond the next several days to see if there's more rain coming our way, and we got a few sprinkles yesterday. i don't see anything through at least november 5th, and that's when we will see the approach of some rain moving into northern california. we will have cold fronts between now and then, but they look to be dry as they pass. the next cold front comes tomorrow, and gilroy will see highs in the upper 60s. the weekend is nice and mild, and then we will gradually warm up. then there will be another front dipping in by the end of next week, but still no rain.

bay man whose sprinkler system stumped him. >> he couldn't get a hold of the contractor, so he called chris chmura and his team to lend a hand. >> good morning. sal in novato said his home irrigation system was not working. a landscaping contractor said the problem was the controller, so he paid them 526 bucks for a new one with installation. the problem is sal says the new controller is complicated and he couldn't figure out how to use it. he called and email the contractor for a week asking for a lesson or a refund. sal says he didn't get a response. so he turned to our team, the response team. we reached out to the contractor. the next day a rep went to sal's home and got him and his system up to speed and he was satisfied. the contractor told us we did exactly what we promised sal. landscapers do need a license,

lewiston. >> reporter: at this very moment communities here in central maine are shelter in place orders, and that includes lisbon where the vehicle was identified last night, auburn, lewiston, and boden, and all of them are under shelter in place, stay in your home orders. you look over my shoulder and see law enforcement presence right here, and law enforcement down the hill, that's the bar and sports grill where one of the two killings occurred yesterday around 7:00 last night, eastern standard. there are two locations we know of, where a somebody came in and shot 15 to 20 people, and that number is still being verified. as many as 50 others were injured. the bowling alley and the bar are four to five miles apart.

the chronology is not clear. authorities are searching for a person of interest, robert card. police have not called him a suspect as of yet. they are definitely searching for him as the suspect in the case, and we have seen somebody with a semiautomatic gunning people down at the bowling alley, and it was teen night. lives have changes forever from what happened last night. we have presence from the fbi, local state and federal law enforcement. roughly 100 investigators are out right now searching for card. last night they located his car in nearby lisbon, but nothing since then. we are expecting an update in law enforcement as to where things stand, and not clear how

not have the gun restrictions, and he wants congress to take action on gun control. and having pushed for legislation this past summer to ban firearms in public spaces. she said she's devastated with the latest tragedy saying it should have been prevented. and san francisco attorney, david shoe, expressing his frustration about the pushback. >> we need politicians with a backbone to put a end to the carnage. >> knowing as a society we could do better than this if we put into place strong gun safety laws. >> and chui worked with

legislators to ban firearms. some laws have been challenged in recent years in the courts. exactly a week ago a district court judge ruled the decades-old california law that bans ownership and transfer of specific brands and firearms unlawful. and at this time assault weapons restrictions do remain in effect. the same district court also issued a decision invalidating california's large capacity magazine ban. that ruling is under appeal as well. as this back and forth continues in the courts, as the debates play out on the public stage, these lives, the tragedies continue and lives forever impacted and changed, laura. >> completely. i think everybody is feeling it across the country, once again. thank you, ginger.

be sure to stay with nbc bay area for the latest news, and we are tracking any new details on-air, and, of course, online. and then there's word of an arrest from a shooting at a packed party. a teen died and three others injured, and now police arrested an 18-year-old of antioch. they are not saying if he's connected to oakley's freedom high school. parents were saying they were fearing a retaliation shooting would happen. the investigation is ongoing. a follow-up this morning about a story about a traveling puppet show brought to a standstill when it was stolen. police recovered the u haul containing the costumes.

this is a thousand-year-old persian love story with sold-out shows in seattle. the thieves stole the truck outside the van ness hotel, and all the pieces were recovered but the thieves kept the electric equipment, but at least their upcoming show in seattle will go on as planned. it takes so much time to make intricate little pieces like that. now that show will go on in seattle as they found that truck. >> kind of sad i missed it in san francisco. looks like an interesting show. maybe it will return. i am sure they will be a little cautious to come back. let's look for good news this morning. taking a live look outside. you know where that is, i-80 at donner summit. there was snow that hit the area, the first in a while. caltrans lifted the chain requirements. don't need them now.

they lifted it last night, but chp still telling drivers to take it slow. palisades tahoe posted images from the slopes and plans to open november 22nd. the thing is we will need a lot more snow before they can even get their snow machines working to have enough to ski down the mountains. >> but we have the cold temperatures. it will be very chilly this weekend. in the next several days, if you want to go, get the first glimpses of the snowfall that fell. you have to pack up a lot of layers. i can kind of see a little snow on the mountain there as we take a live look at the camera on palisades tahoe. check out the temperatures. 18 degrees tonight. very cold. it's going to be chilly throughout the weekend with highs in the low 40s, but it will be sunny. seeing the sun on the snow, it will definitely be a nice view there. taking a look at san josé and what to expect as we go throughout the day.

and that could please maga, but a poll shows a majority supports abortion rights and gay marriage. president biden hosted a state dinner with the prime minister of australia at the white house last night. this was a prescheduled party. it comes during somber times. the president stepped away so he could be briefed on the shootings in main and the situation in israel. he warned people to leave the palestinians alone. >> that has to stop now. >> former president donald trump has been fined by the court again. he said the judge in the civil case was partisan, and so too was the person sitting next to him, and people thought that

>> yeah, i always look at the landscaping and the beautiful flowers they have. it's really amazing. it's going to be cool today and sunshine in the forecast. lots of changes as we go through the next couple of days. going into the weekend, our temperatures starting out in the low 40s, even in san francisco with our clear view this morning around the city. the cold front moved through yesterday and now we are getting the cool air rushing down, the clouds well near southern california and moving away from the bay area. we are seeing temperatures in parts of the north bay dipping into the upper 30s. santa rosa checking in at 38 degrees. it's cold there but we are seeing the low 40s in parts of the east bay. a bit of a range in temperatures, and brentwood as you are starting out, it's 50 and clear with a light wind.

the temperatures will stay on the cool side for the next couple of hours. sunshine today gradually warming up, but we do make a nice recovery. even though it's a cold morning, take a look at where we are headed. upper 60s and low 70s, which is cooler than normal. it's going to be a nice afternoon. i say if you like the slightly warmer temperatures, 3:00, 4:00, 5:00, that's your time to get outside, and after that the temperatures dip quickly for the evening. oakland, expect a high of 69 degrees. up to 67 in redwood city and san mateo. and then 66 in mill valley. sonoma today, 68 degrees. as we look to see if there's more rain, because a few got sprinkles yesterday, but there's nothing else until maybe the end of next weekend. that's november 5th. we are seeing the approach of a system that could bring us rain.
