maine. >> at least 18 people were killed and 13 others injured when a gunman opened fire last night in lewiston, maine, it happened in two separate shootings at a bowling alley and a restaurant about four miles apart. take a look at this video, people running out of the bowling alley. >> the suspect has been identified by authorities as robert card. 20 years of military experience. a certified firearms instructor. police consider him armed and dangerous. he's holding an assault rifle here. that weapon was purchased legally this year. multistate manhunt is under way to find card. >> understandably this shooting has the state of maine in total shock and completely shattered any sense of security in the community. >> everybody knows everybody, it's a peaceful community. the worst thing you're afraid of

happening is jaywalker. i'm going to start locking my doors at night. i leave them wide open, right now i'm going on get a ring cam. >> that sense of safety absolutely shattered. let's bring in rehema ellis in lewiston, we have to start with the victims, what do we know so far about how they've been impacted here? i understand there's never been a shooting like this in maine. >> reporter: that's what people tell me, where it all began is at the building right behind me, the bowling alley, and five miles from here and 12 minutes after this shooting occurred, there was another shooting just four miles away at a bar, i talked with a doctor who's at health facility just down the street and he said he was born and raised here, lived here his whole life and he never, ever, ever expected something like this to happen here. in this day and age where so

many kind of things happen, that you wouldn't hear that from someone. he said that about this community. lewiston, maine, wasn't the place they were expecting it and today there's an eerie feeling to it. you can see it the signs say shelter in place and there's physical evidence that people are not operating, schools are closed, shops are closed, people are staying home. >> rehema, what 's the latest from police on the search for the suspect? >> reporter: yeah, they've issued an arrest warrant and another alert to continue to shelter in place. which would give everyone the indication they don't have sights on him yet, one of the things that we have learned from senior law enforcement officials that this suspect has several acres of property here in maine.

maybe they're searching that area, police are not sharing with us exact information where the search is under way but they have made it clear that hundreds of law enforcement authorities, local, state and federal are on this case kate. >> rehema ellis, thank you. as we mentioned a major violent crime like this extremely rare for the state of maine, not the first time that the whole state has been on edge. >> that's right, five years ago, maine law enforcement captured a man who was later convicted in the shooting of a sheriff's deputy. thank you both for being with us. ken, maine's governor said the suspect is considered armed and dangerous, what are state and federal law enforcement agencies focusing on right now and what more do we know about this man, this suspect in. >> reporter: the u.s. marshals,

the fbi atf all looking with officials in a massive manhunt. they're searching for any digital footprints possibly left by this person scouring social media. interviewing friends and relatives. concern that he'll try to shoot it out when they ultimately try to take him into custody. what we're learning about robert card, some new startling reporting in the last hour, there were many chances, many red flags here pointing to troubling behavior by mr. card, we're told that his military commanders referred him to psychiatric treatment over the summer based on his concerning behavior and threats that he made but more recently members of his family just told our colleagues on nbc digital they were so concerned about his mental health that they were communicating with his military

commanders and explaining that he had access to firearms and an uninstructor, no clear that the army did anything about it. >> some dramatic new reporting. carmen, so law enforcement is telling everyone to shelter in place. how do you approach a case like this if you don't have any idea of where the guy is? >> well, they have some idea where they can start looking. they'll be conducting family members and finding information out where he's frequented, what he's comfortable with, and try to start there. i think they'll try to throw out a bunch of information as possible to give them a good starting position. >> ken, as you were detailing the suspect's background, he has

military background, the senate adopted a amendment involving veterans and access to guns. can you tell us more about that? >> reporter: yeah, this is quite remarkable, this was an amendment to a spending bill and it passed with some democrat support mostly are republican, essentially changed the rules when the department of veterans affairs would report about veterans with mental disabilities or mental incapacities. right now, the rule is they have to put that information to the fbi, it goes into a database prohibiting them from buying firearms. where they need assistance with v.a. benefits. what this amendment it prohibits that and opponents of it said they were worried it enhances the risk of military suicides, which is a much more common problem than mass shootings, in light of what is happening now, it's getting a lot of attention

and the senator from maine angus king, an independent voted if favor of this amendment. >> that hasn't passed in the house yet, right, just to be clear. >> that's correct. carmen back to you, we heard ken say the family has spoken to law enforcement, they're cooperating, any reason to believe that somebody could be helping the suspect? >> well, of course you have to consider that who may be an accomplice. some people have allegiance to him, feel sorry for him, or may want to help him in some way. you can't rule that out at this point. he may be getting help from someone. of course, many families are grieving now across the lewiston community describing the torment and confusion they've experienced trying to learn the fate of their loved one and lester holt spoke with a father of one of the victims about how

he learned that his son had passed. >> joey walker was shot to death, shot to death, but then he went in to telling her that he died as hero because he picked up a butcher knife from somewhere -- he has all that stuff near the bar anyways and he tried to go at the gunman to try to stop him. >> does it change your pain at all knowing that? >> it made it worse. yeah. it made it worse. >> leroy walker talking about his son joey. more of lester's interview tonight on "nightly news." we'll turn now to a major potential breakthrough for tens of thousands of united auto workers on strike. >> the united auto workers union

now says it has reached a tentative contract agreement with ford. and that could set a pattern for deals with the other two major u.s. automakers. shaquille brewster is following the latest developments on that outside a assembly plant in chicago. shaq, nice to see you with good news. it could be a turning point. talk about what led to this tentative agreement with ford. did they get everything they were asking for? >> reporter: good afternoon to you. a key earnings call with ford executives later today and some rumblings yesterday they were close to a deal with the uaw. the uaw didn't get everything they were looking for, the uaw president and leadership calling this a record contract, a historic contract, it includes a 25% pay increase, that includes 11% increase immediately once this deal is enacted. cost of living adjustments come back for the first time in well

over a decade. right to strike over plant closures. now this deal is not final yet, it's a tentative agreement, union leadership will go to detroit this weekend and that's when they'll vote on whether or not this goes to the entire union membership and the ongoing strike with gm and stellantis, but with this deal coming one ford and this agreement now happening that puts pressure on the other two big automakers to come up with their own tentative agreements. >> okay, we'll see if that tentative deal gets finalized. shaq, thank you. time now for today's money minute. how about some good news for the u.s. economy in. >> i think we could use. and x formerly known as twitter is rolling out all new features. the preliminary numbers are in, the u.s. economy appears to have grown at a higher than expected rate in the third

israel's military said it conducted a quote targeted raid inside gaza. >> israel released this video which appears to show tanks rolling through a border fence into the gaza strip, to be clear this is not the beginning of the ground offensive, instead the military is calling, quote, preparations for the next stage of conflict. >> israeli troops also performed

tank drills near the lebanon border. joining us is josh lederman and matt bradley. josh, what else is israel's military saying about the raid in gaza today in. >> reporter: kate, israel knows that once they launch that full-scale ground incursion into gaza, israel has suggesting that's imminent, they're encounter stiff resistance from la mass fighters. this was aimed at softening the ground. the military here saying that they targeted anti-tank capabilities of hamas as well as infrastructure including those underground tunnels. the israeli military is saying that this is not the first or the last of these raids before they launch the full ground

invasion. we should also point out the fighting is still going in both directions. in the last ten minutes or so the air raid sirens going off once again here in tel aviv, 30 seconds later the boom in the air as that iron defense system is intercepting. >> matt, you're reporting that hezbollah the militant group based in lebanon actually had its deadliest day yesterday since october 7th nearly three weeks ago, where do things stand right now on israel's northern border? >> reporter: yeah, i mean, it's an interesting situation here because we're seeing quite a lot of violence but a lot of restraint. kind of a delicate dance that goes on. there are norms by which both sides have to play and so far both of them seem to be playing by the rules even as we're seeing the death count increasing. the deadliest day yesterday for hezbollah, the dominant military force here, they resemble an

army than a paramilitary. they lost more than a dozen people yesterday and that brings their totals as of today, the following day, up to 49, that's about seven times as many soldiers as the israelis have lost on the other side of the border. it goes to show that things aren't going all that well for hezbollah even though the war hasn't started yesterday. i was a funeral for one hezbollah, it was a different tone than a hezbollah funeral a couple of weeks ago. one of the relatives of the deceased firefight who i had a little talk with him. >> we know the guy, very nice, well behaved. very nice. people like him very well. he's very cool, quiet, hardworking as i told you. >> reporter: so, as i mentioned the mood was a little bit different than when there were

also try for fizzy fast cough relief. good thursday. this is "the fast forward." i'm janelle wang. as authorities in maine continue the manhunt for the suspect accused of killing 18 people last night, the debate around gun safety is reignited. the governor taking to social media pointing out that maine does not ban assault weapons, require permits to carry a gun or require background checks. he adds congress needs to take action on gun control. bay area leaders are sounding the alarm. >> we need politicians with a backbone to be elected so that we can put an end to this carnage in this country. >> it's so upsetting and infuriating, particularly knowing that as a society we can do better than this if we put into place strong gun safety laws. >> the city attorney worked with the supervisor to introduce

legislation and talk about banning firearms. california has some of the strictest gun safety laws in the country. however, some laws have been challenged in recent years in court. oakland police are searching for the driven of a stolen car involved in a deadly hit and run. it happened last night. officers say the stolen kia was speeding when it hit another car. the impact caused it to crash into two parked cars. paramedics took the man to the hospital where he died. the driver took off. the person in the other car involved took themselves to the hospital. anyone with information on this incident is asked to call police. here are other stories. new efforts in the south bay to crack down on retail theft. san jose is installing license plate readers.

in may, police began installing the cameras at intersections that were notorious for fatal crashes. they installed more at intersections where large and small businesses are impacted by organized retail theft. that includes valley fair mall, west gate, warm springs, evergreen and blossom hill. san francisco leaders are bringing efforts to crack down on car break-ins to sacramento. lawmakers plan to announce a new legislation at the state capital. it will call for more support to help local law enforcement. san francisco's district attorney vowed to be more aggressive in prosecutioning car burglary suspects. let's get a check of the weather. it's more like sweater weather, jacket weather. it's upon us. we have a look at the forecast. >> happy thursday. the fall vibe is around.

judge andrew wilkinson following a divorce proceeding. dozens of union hotel workers in las vegas are facing charges for holding a protest during the middle of rush hour traffic. thousands of workers held a rally on the vegas strip on wednesday demanding new union contract. in the process, alleged many demonstrators blocked cars in both directions. 58 people were cited for assembly to disturb the peace. some diners in wisconsin were shocked to see a deer, surveillance video shows a deer barging into a crowded restaurant right around lunchtime. the deer explored the kitchen before leaving out the back door. now, let's bring you up to speed with the latest on the mass shootings out of maine. >> at least 18 people are dead and 13 others hurt after two shootings last night in

lewiston, maine. the gunman first opened fire at a bowling alley and then went to a local bar, you can see people fleeing that bowling alley as the attack happened. >> federal and local authorities are fanned across new england looking for this man police say is the suspect. identified as robert card. an army reservist. president biden has been briefed on the shooting. >> the president said in a statement, quote, for countless americans who have survived gun violence and been traumatized by it, a shooting such as this reopens deep and painful wounds, far too many americans have now have had a family killed or injured as a result of gun violence. the president said that's not normal and we cannot accept it. with us is antoine ya hylton. you're outside a hospital in and we don't have a lot of

information about the victims. where you are is where a lot of them came, right? >> that's right. we heard from a doctor earlier this morning describing the so much the scene here, it's been around the clock, an effort to save lives, since the very first people arrived at medical center behind me here for care shortly after 7:00 p.m. last night. three people died at this medical center and three others are still in critical condition, there are families waiting all over this county for more news about loved ones who are getting care here but also at a few other medical facilities around the state right now, the impact of this has been shocking and incredibly painful for people, we're starting in drips to learn more about the victims. for example we know that manager of the bar where this second half of the shooting took place, his father spoken out and we've also been hearing from people who say they're waiting for more

information about friends because we know about ten of those 18 still haven't been positively identified which means there are those families waiting for more news from authorities. >> there's still a very large search under way for this suspect, schools are closed, people are being told to shelter in place, what kind of resources are being sent to maine to capture this person. >> reporter: that shelter in place was just extended a little bit over an hour ago and everyone here in county got a notification because there's still an active threat here. authorities have been quite clear about that, you know, and as we learn more about robert card, the fear is actually only growing, lot of people compare this to what happened in pennsylvania, for two weeks, there was this manhunt trying to find this person who broke out of prison, the fear here is, because he's highly trained that

this is someone who's going to be incredibly dangerous. >> armed and dangerous, lot of training this man apparently, you got a large area, what does that look like? >> it's complicated because it's a large area and it's sparsely populated. . you can't rely on license plate readers or cameras or a lot of people to be calling in with a sighting, all right, so it's a difficult area to search. by this point you would have at least several hundred, perhaps already a thousand officers to deploy from maine and across neighboring states. they'll search with a team leader, that will be coordinated

with a command post. and then they'll probably have tactical teams, s.w.a.t. teams standing by if and when someone comes across who they may believe is this gentleman hiding out they can send the proper team to address it because it's very dangerous. >> that manhunt under way. thank you both. this is just the latest mass shooting in america, the nonprofit group called gun violence archive is calling it the worst of the year so far, mass shoots where at least four people are shot. noah pransky has been looking closely at this, the toll of mass shootings in the united states. mass shootings in maine are quite rare and how does that compare to the national? >> it's uncharacteristic many

maine, to this year, more than last five years combined according to gun violence archive, despite fairly high gun ownership in the state of maine. about half households have weapons. where we see some correlation is overall gun deaths, this is homicide plus suicide plus accidental deaths, maine one of highest numbers in all of the northeast. 12.6% for every 100,000 residents. this tend to correlate to gun ownership numbers. also higher gun deaths as we can see from this map. >> and as we learn more about the suspect and this mass shooting and how it unfolded, what are we learning about gun laws in maine. >> it's middle of pack, ranked 25th out of our 50 states in gun safety. restrict someone with a background and mental illness.

by and large not a lot of typical gun laws. you don't need a permit to carry a weapon in maine. in fact they have open carry and you don't have additional state background checks in addition to what's on the book. the gifford law center a critic of maine's policy ranks its f, advocating for gun restrictions, they give maine a f, only two states in the entire northeast that get that failing grade. >> noah, thank you. court is back many session today for bryan kohberger the man accused of murdering four university of idaho students last year. the grand jury that indicted him was bias and for the indictment to be dismissed. meanwhile prosecutors are pushing for the case to move forward. dana, legal experts say this move from kohberger's attorneys is a long shot or a legal hail mary, what can we expect to

happen in court today and what is exactly kohberger's defense here in. >> reporter: the motions are under seal and no information has been released from it thus far, the defense was expected to argue to dismiss the indictment on the grounds of a bias jury, lack of sufficient evidence and prosecutorial misconduct in holding evidence. that means that the defense believes prosecutors withheld information that could possibly exonerate kohberger and what that alleged evidence it remains unclear. the second hearing is open to the public and is scheduled to start in about an hour, according to court documents the defense will argue that the grand jury was misled on the standard of proof required for an indictment, the defense's arguing that the standard is beyond a reasonable doubt while the state argues that probably cause is the correct standard

for the proof of the grand jury. interesting to see where the judge stands on those motion and briefly here, what comes next after these hearings in. >> reporter: if the judge sides with the defense the indictment could be overturned. the case could be sent back to a preliminary hearing but experts say the defense motion is very routine. but it's hail mary to try to end this case. kohberger has waved his right to a speedy trial. it's expected to begin next year. a plea of not guilty was filed on kohberger's behalf by the judge and the state in this case is seeking the death penalty. >> dana, thank you. up next, the aftermath of otis the devastation left in mexico by the category 5 hurricane and what is next for tourists who are now stranded.

collected on the stand, but they're going through it now. we expect the jury to return, though, tomorrow morning. >> danny, we heard kate rooney called this odd, break that down for us. is it usual for us to see testify in this way? >> no. back in september, the judge issued a ruling on a number of different defenses, in other words he limited certain defenses by the defense. one he reserved judgment on whether or not ftx could introduce this advice of counsel defense. that opens up the door back up the dump truck because now the prosecution can introduce the attorneys and say, i never gave this advice and there's no attorney/client privilege because of this defense.

you can introduce all of the evidence even from the attorneys. the sbf's team has danced around this advice of counsel. and that's why the judge is saying i need to hear this testimony before i can allow it. >> is it risky for him to speak at all and testify? >> absolutely. for centuries now the general rule among defense attorneys unofficially is never, ever, ever let your client take the stand. in the last few years there seems to be a trend of defendants taking the stand in high-profile cases. you have an ar cane area, no matter how they prepare. >> kate, we understand his testimony of sbf could take hours in front of a jury. what is he expected to say? >> reporter: so, we do expect to hear more about this blame game
