"early today" starts right now. good morning, i'm phillip mena. >> thanks for ending the week with us, i'm frances rivera. breaking last late last night, the u.s. has conducted airstrikes in eastern syria, targeting what the pentagon describes as facilities used by iran's revolutionary guard corps and affiliated groups.

>> let's go to chapman bell who is monitoring these developments for us. what are we learning this morning? >> good morning, phillip and frances. yeah, the u.s. military's striking two facilities that are supported by iran's revolutionary guards and affiliated groups in eastern syria. this is in response to a series of attacks that began about ten days ago. a u.s. military official saying 19 attacks in total on u.s. personnel in iraq and syria. and while most of these attacks have been relatively unsuccessful, secretary of defense lloyd austin saying, as a result of these attack, one u.s. citizen contractor died from a cardiac incident while sheltering in place, and 21 u.s. personnel had been suffering, have suffered minor injuries as a result of these attacks. now lloyd austin also stressing that the president has no higher priority than the safety of u.s. personnel, these u.s. personnel

based in iraq and syria and that the u.s. will not tolerate these types of attacks and will defend itself. while they're not looking to escalate this, they will defend themselves as necessary. but are hoping that by striking these two facilities using f-16s, with precision-guide munitions, that they can put a stop to these attacks. one was described as an ammunition storage area. the other is a weapons storage area. the attacks have been carried out by drones and missile attacks. in a time of tension in the region, but stressing that this action is separate and distinct from the ongoing conflict between israel and hamas. and it does not constitute a shift in the u.s. approach to this conflict, adding that there is no coordination with israel before these attacks, making sure that it is clear that this is not directly linked to the ongoing conflict between hamas and israel, but they, the u.s. saying they will continue to

protect u.s. personnel based in these two countries, frances and phillip? >> chapman bell starting us off, thank you. let's turn now to lewiston, maine, that community and the towns around it are still on lockdown. people there are dealing with heartbreak and terror, as the hunt for a mass murderer continues into another day. police are flooding the area, looking for the man suspected of killing 18 people wednesday night. alice barr joins us live from lewiston. there are reports of a lot of police activity there overnight. what are we hearing from law enforcement? >> reporter: well, frances, really, the main activity, as you know, has been police. there have been law enforcement agencies from really all over the surrounding area, flooding into what is normally this quiet area in maine. between that and at the hospital, this has been, essentially everything that is happening right now in this area. because we know there's been a lockdown, essentially, shelter in place orders for everyone in

this surrounding area as the search continues for robert card. now there are still three patients in critical condition in the hospital here. there were 13 injured in addition to the 18 dead. we can show you, i believe, some images from the last known address for robert card, the 40-year-old suspected gunman, and there were law enforcement agencies from all over, surrounding the home overnight. a lot of efforts to try to see if he could be drawn out. but eventually they did kind of refocus the search. there a number of areas where they're looking. there was no direct indication he was in there. they're just doing due diligence to try to find any possible location for him. we do know that card's vehicle was found yesterday and that there was a gun found inside, though it's not entirely clear if that was the assault-style rifle used in the attack. and this all unfolded in two locations, a bowling alley and

nearby restaurant and bar. we have heard just the tragic stories from families of those who were killed, and also from the survivors of how all of this unfolded. and then just utter shock from neighbors. we mowknow that robert card is long-time army reservist, has had mental health struggles according to family members. let's hear from one neighbor about what all this has been like over the past several hours. >> last time i saw him was two weeks ago when weighshe was hel his father hay this field over here, perfectly normal, nothing out of the norm, a hard-working farming family, doing their thing. helicopter spotlights going over. s.w.a.t. team vans and stuff i saw roll by theis morning. unbelievable. never see that here. >> reporter: officials tell nbc news that robert card actually

threatened a military base and was sent by his own commanders to a mental health facility in july. so there are questions about how he was able to still possess a gun. and that is just part of what investigators are still urgently working on today. >> the community is dealing with the just unimaginable heartbreak and terror there, thank you, alice. the white house is claiming that russian soldiers, russia has started executing their soldiers who do not follow orders. national security council spokesman john kirby says entire units have been threatened with death if they retreat from ukrainian fear. american officials believe it reflects low morale in the russian armed forces sense the invasion of ukraine began in late february 2022. the claims are from declassified u.s. intelligence, but mnot corroborated beyond that. a chinese fighter jet came within ten feet of an american b-52 bomber over the south china

sea. the u.s. military says the two aircraft almost collided because of quote, unsafe and unprofessional airmanship on the part of the china ese pilot. the chinese did not respond no request for comment but has previously dismissed similar complaint. the incident happened on tuesday. . in a possible game changer, the uaw has reached a tentative agreement with ford as stellantis and gm plants expand with both auto makers losing huge sums of money. >> reporter: for ford workers, cleanup along the picket lines. >> it was a bit of a shock, you know. i didn't expect ford to come to the table with a deal so soon. >> reporter: six weeks into their sweeping strike against america's big three car companies, united auto workers announcing their first tentative agreement.

>> our stand-up strike has delivered. >> reporter: uaw leaders say the ford deal which still needs to be approved by members would guarantee a 25% increase in base pay, reinstate cost of living increases. >> wage increases, the cost of living allowance is huge. >> reporter: but other members aren't so sure. >> what we were shooting for was at least 30% to 35%. 25%, that's not enough. >> reporter: meanwhile, strikes at stellantis and gm grew. gm saying the stoppage has already cost them $800 million in pretax earnings. both companies confirm talks continue. >> i wouldn't be surprised that eventually gm and stellantis ultimately agree to contracts with a similar type of pay raise for their workers. >> reporter: president biden who made history joining the picket line last month calling the ford deal a testament to the power of employers and employees coming
