there was a fire and one person has died. the tow truck is on scene and they are able to hook this up from a flatbed and remove it hopefully in the next 15, 20 minutes. it should be clear if you're heading through the area by 5:30. this is north 85 over to north 101. if you have to leave in the next few minutes, you can exit before you get there. exit at moffett and take that so you don't get rerouted to shoreline. you can get back onto north 101 traveling just a few blocks. that is a problem. the rest of the bay is an easy drive, eastbound 580 construction blocking a lane or two. the big deal is in mountain view with our deadly crash, north 85 at 101. back to you. here is a look at our

temperatures this morning. it is a very cold start, and we're in the mid-30s right now in parts of the north bay. 35 degrees in santa rosa, and we're not even to the bottom of those temperatures. so we're going to get even cooler over the next few hours. it is 53 in oakland, one of the warmer spots. maybe a little more breezy. 48 as you head out now in san jose. this is a look at our highs. it's going to be very nice and mild, with temperatures in the mid to upper 60s. of course this is still on the cool side as we head into the afternoon, only a few of us reach into the low 70s. we'll talk about changes ahead going into the weekend and the concerns we have coming up in the microclimate forecast. >> thank you very much. we are following breaking news overseas. the united states launching military strikes on syria. the pentagon says the strikes were in retaliation for drone attacks on american bases in the region. defense secretary lloyd austin says the u.s. targeted two

facilities in eastern syria used by iran's islamic revolutionary guard and affiliated groups. the military action comes amid rising tensions in the middle east. however, secretary austin called the attacks, quote, separate and distinct from the ongoing conflict between israel and hamas. we turn to the latest on the heartbreak and fear in maine this morning. schools remain close in lewiston for a second day as a multi-state manhunt for the man who shot and killed 18 people continues. authorities are still looking for robert card, considered armed and dangerous. investigators believe he is responsible for two mass shootings, one at a bar, the other at a bowling alley. and more details are coming to light about carr this morning. by flashlight overnight as law enforcement surrounded the last known address of suspected mass murderer, robert card. it's just one area of intense focus, and until he's found, tens of thousands remain under shelter-in-place orders. >> please stay at home and be safe. >> reporter: card is suspected of killing at least 18 people and injuring 13 more, in a lewiston bowling alley and a nearby restaurant and bar. >> i saw him looking at his gun, he was facing away from our group. i turned to everybody at the bowling alley on that side, and i said everybody get out that exit door right now, live shooter. i almost wish that i was up closer to him when he came in, because every time i close my eyes, i visualize myself attacking him. >> reporter: grief stricken

calls to police in san francisco. earlier this month police say joseph adam moore set up a temporary camp outside the academy catholic school and put out signs that said free fentanyl and meth for stolen items. moore is also on the state's sex offender list. the community expressed a lot of frustration and last night district attorney brooke jenkins filed charges against him for misdemeanor battery and creating a public nuisance. jenkins posted about the charged on social media writing in part, quote, i share the public's frustration and concerns regarding this alleged conduct and will everything in my power to ensure that we keep kids and families safe in our community. the driverless car company cruise is pulling all of its driverless cars off the road nationwide. "today in the bay"'s ginger conejero saab is live in san francisco, which is home to cruise. ginger, this comes just days after the dmv suspended cruise's

driverless cars right here in california. >> reporter: and now cruise making that announcement that it is pulling all of its driverless cars, just as you mentioned. their decision impacting operations beyond dmv scope and also affecting texas and arizona operations. the company released a statement that read, in part, quote, the most important thing for us right now is to take steps to rebuild public trust. part of this involves taking a hard look inwards and how we do work at cruise, even if it means doing things that are uncomfortable or difficult. now, earlier this month, a woman was pinned under a cruise robotaxi in the city, the driver of another car with a human driver hit the woman. that other car took off. now, from that collision, the woman was thrown into the next lane where the driverless cruise car ran her over, pinned her underneath the car, and then dragged her as the car pulled

over. that woman remains in the hospital in serious condition. now, this latest move is quite a contrast to where cruise was a little over a month ago, looking to rebuild its presence on the roads with a first vehicle advertised to be build from the ground up to be self-driving and wheelchair accessible. we were at the global launch. now, their announcement with a very different tone, very different tone where it is now. you'll see driverless technology will still be on the roads because cruise does have a competitor waymo, and in the city you see or maybe feel their presence a little more these days. but the question is, laura, will this be a quick pitstop for cruise or will this be the end of the road? we will keep our eyes out and have to watch to see. >> most definitely. ginger, thanks for the latest. taking a live look in san jose, whereby this time tomorrow, parts of the bay area will be under a weather watch, as windy conditions are

expected. it's a fire weather watch. the watch starts at 5:00 tomorrow morning and runs through 5:00 p.m. on sunday. sonoma, napa and marin counties are affected, as well as the santa cruz mountains, eastern santa clara county and the east bay hills. the national weather service says people need to use extreme caution, especially outdoors. that's the main thing we're talking about. >> it's basically anywhere above 1,000 feet. any of our hills around the bay area will have some more gusty winds, and if you're out there hiking, if someone sets a fire, it could spread very quickly because of the low humidity and the gusty winds. for parts of the north bay, that fire weather watch starts tonight. so we may see those winds starting to pick up there, and then for the rest of the bay area it's tomorrow morning. so basically all weekend. here is why. we start to see the winds picking up near the coastline for late this evening. parts of the north bay will have

gusty winds, especially tomorrow morning into the afternoon. but the winds get stronger going into sunday morning, and look at napa. in miles per hour, we could see winds at 41, and some of those higher gusts as you go up in elevations, so our hills and mountains will have gusty winds. but not many of us in the valleys will feel those gusty winds. we're going to see temperatures dropping, going from highs in the mid to upper 60s to also some slightly cooler than normal weather for tomorrow as well. i'll be tracking all of this for you. mike, what's the progress on the closed highway connecter? >> we asked daniel to turn the camera the opposite direction. there's going to be a closure at least for a few more minutes. the flatbed tow truck, they're going to hook up and pull up this burnt-out shell of a vehicle. this is the connecter from north 85 to 101. this is still closed for the time being. coming up 85 to north 101, right

the u.s. treasury wants to warn crypto companies, they'll do it today, watch out for any customers who use bitcoin to fund hamas and other terror groups, and warn the penalties are going to be severe. the treasury says they can track it, they know about it, and they'll take action. also today, october 27th, marks one year since elon musk took over twitter. you recall he offered to buy it at an incredibly inflated price, then tried to get out of the deal, only to have a court force him to follow through. one year ago today the deal closed, and since that time we've seen many changes at twitter's market street headquarters. for a while, the sign outside changed from twitter to a crude sexual joke, to eventually nothing at all. the biggest changes came inside the building. here is musk's first day when he carried a sink into the building. since that time, x has cut 80%

that early morning walk. we are seeing some milder temperatures where it's a little more breezy, so that really doesn't help you out too much because it still feels cold. in oakland it is 53. compare that to 34 in sonoma. and this just shows you how big our microclimates can be. across the bay area, a lot of us are experiencing and feeling different kinds of weather all at the same time, even in a short distance. let's get a look at walnut creek in our planner. it starts out at 8:00 at 44 degrees, at noon it is partly cloudy and 61. eventually we'll see the sky clearing but we're staying in the mid to upper 60s with parts of the south bay also in the upper 60s. as we get a look at the east bay, walnut creek will hit a high of 68, 66 in livermore, and in oakland 66 degrees. in palo alto it's in the upper 60s, while dal eye city reaching only 61 degrees. san francisco, also, low 60s today with breezy winds, and the north bay headed up for 67 in

sonoma. and by tonight we'll have a frost advisory kicking into effect for parts of the north bay valleys. here we're going to see even colder temperatures than what we're experiencing this morning. you want to make sure you're bringing in those sensitive plants and covering any crops that may be damaged. as we look ahead, it looks to stay dry, even as we head through next week, possibly next sunday and monday we could see rain chances. the weekend, the high concern will be the fire danger for the hills, with the winds picking up, especially in the north bay, parts of the east bay and santa cruz mountains. highs reaching into the upper 60s and low 70s. looks nice for halloween, but it will be chilly, especially in the evening as temperatures drop quickly after sunset. mike, you're still monitoring a weekend connecter closure. that's right. this connecter is still closed, this crash still being cleared. the vehicle on the connecter from north 85 to north 101 in

move to the bay area that will move them forward with a big financial boost. this is "today in the bay." good friday morning to you. 5:30 right now. thanks for joining us. i'm laura garcia. >> i'm marcus washington. we want to get you started with a look at the forecast. meteorologist kari hall is monitoring cooler temperatures this morning. >> cooler. it is downright cold for a lot of spots, especially with this being the first big blast of cold temperatures hitting us for the season. take a look at parts of the north bay, where we are two degrees above freezing in sonoma, and we are seeing, also, 30s in parts of the north bay. it is now 39 in dublin and in palo alto. and then as we go into today, spots like gilroy will have a nice, mild afternoon, with a lot of sunshine. we're headed for the upper 60s. most of us will reach into the upper 60s from oakland, reaching 66, to 68 in fairfield. we'll talk about changes we have for the weekend and some events going on around the bay area.

that's coming up in about seven minutes. mike, you've been watching this crash and them trying to clean it up. >> that's right, this is blocking a connecter in mountain view, and unfortunately it was a deadly crash. this is the burnt-out shell of a vehicle. you see it's now on the back of the flatbed tow truck. there's debris that has to be cleared. this is the closure of this connecter from northbound 85 to north 101. now, you are forced off the freeway in the area as you travel over, you can exit at shoreline and then you can get back onto the surface streets. that's a bit of a reroute and kind of a change of direction. i want to keep you moving forward smoothly. you can exit at moffett and take that back to north 101. there's good capacity at this time of morning. there's a couple of signals on surface streets that will get you around the closure. the rest of the bay is moving smoothly. there is a crash in contra costa county. i'm monitoring. everything should be clearing

shortly. we'll check that, of course. back to you. >> thank you very much. we're following breaking news, the u.s. hits targets inside syria that says it's related to iran. >> scott mcgrew, the pentagon says that this is really a retaliation for those attacks against the u.s. >> that's exactly right. good morning. we're just learning more about the severity of those attacks against u.s. troops. no service members killed, though a contractor did die of a heart attack. the attacks against u.s. forces happened in northern iraq. we still have about 2,500 u.s. forces in iraq, as well as the air base in iraq and positions inside syria, where we continue to hunt for terrorists. here is a closer look at the same map. the latest strike against the u.s. in red at the al tanf, and our strikes against iranian-backed militants in

syria in blue. >> we know that these are iranian-backed malitia groups that are supported by iran, and of course we hold iran responsible for these groups. >> late last week the american destroyer the uss carney fired missiles from the red sea to intercept 18 drones and missiles fired by houthi rebels in yemen. now, the pentagon stresses the recent actions are not related to the situation in israel, but it's not not related to the situation in israel. iran backs the houthis in yemen, iran backs the malitias in syria, it also backs hezbollah, located just north of israel in lebanon. the u.s. is hoping that hezbollah and iran are getting the message, stay out of this. >> iran is certainly complicit here. without them, there is no hamas,

without them, there's no hezbollah, there's no malitia groups firing rockets at our troops in iraq and syria. as i said yesterday, we recognize iran is monitoring these events, and in some cases they're encouraging some of these attacks. no question about it. >> laura, as you know, the u.s. has moved two carrier groups into the region, as well as more u.s. troops. none will be on the ground, the pentagon says, to help israel, but will be available if that war widens. >> they're right there on standby. thanks for the latest. after more than 36 hours after two shootings forever shaped the city of lewiston, maine, there's still no word on where the suspected gunman is. 18 people were killed. an active manhunt spanning multiple states is still under way for that suspect. and now new details about 40-year-old robert card's mental state are coming to light. nbc news's sam brock is in lewiston this morning. >> reporter: good morning. right now people in this community, not just in lewiston,

but as far as out as 50 miles, are waking up to a shelter-in-place order as this manhunt has exceeded 36 hours, and still no signs of robert card. maine state police provided an update yesterday, 24 hours ago, talking about the fact they don't know what state he's in, they're not even sure if he's still alive. as far as critical pieces of information that are still sort of un-spooling at this hour, we've learned about the timeline of the suspect, and specifically how it took him only 12 minutes to go from a bowling alley to the bar right down the street. we've also learned, according to law enforcement officials, about a note found in robert card's home. what are the contents of that note? it could provide some insight into why he allegedly committed these atrocities. this is key, we are hearing directly from card's family about what his mental state was like and their concerns about the fact that he deteriorated to the point where commanders in his own unit had reported that he needed a mental and

psychiatric evaluation, which happened over the summer. now he purchased this weapon, apparently, legally, according to multiple sources telling nbc news that's what happened, despite all of the other circumstances we have just described. we'll have much more on gun laws in maine and also how this fits into a larger picture of mass shootings in america. that story coming up on the "today" show. >> thank you so much, sam. 5:36 right now. happening today, the man accused of beheading his girlfriend with a samurai sword is due in court. in september of last year police say he was arguing with his girlfriend outside of her san carlos apartment and allegedly used a samurai sword to behead her. officers arrested him and he's expected to enter a plea today. the judge will decide if the case is ready to go to trial. moving you forward, the state giving b.a.r.t. a big boost to extend further into the south bay. "today in the bay"'s bob redell live for us in dublin this morning. i know a lot of folks in the south bay are excited to hear

about this because we're talking about hundreds of millions of dollars in new funding. >> reporter: good morning to you. people here in the east bay and other parts of the bay area, because let's say some day in the future you'll be able to get on dublin b.a.r.t. behind me and take a train all the way into san jose and santa clara. unfortunately, that is still well over ten years off, according to the recent projections. what happened is this week the metropolitan transportation commission unanimously approved $375 million in funding to go towards the $12.2 billion project to extend b.a.r.t. further into the south bay. that new money, the $375 million, will be coming from the state of california. the vta, which is managing the construction of this extension, is also seeking additional money from the federal government. the feds are proposing a $6 billion contribution, which the vta expects a commitment for towards the end of next year. right now, the b.a.r.t. line in

the south bay stops at berryessa, north san jose. that's the furthest south station built right now. the proposed extension will add five miles of underground tunnels and four new stations that would get you into downtown san jose and santa clara, as i mentioned. the project recently had a major cost increase due to inflation. it's expected to open in 2036, but it's been delayed more than a decade, and is double the original budget. reporting live here in dublin, bob redell, "today in the bay." >> more money to move it forward sounds good to me. thank you. 5:39 right now. happening tomorrow, the 41st annual leap sandcastle classic takes place. every year students team up with architectural professionals to build world class sandcastles. this year they will create structures based on the theme halloween haunt. all the proceeds from the

101, the tow truck is leaving the area with the burnt-out shell of a vehicle and they should be reopening this connecter ramp in the next couple of seconds. there's a little bit of slowing as i believe the flashing lights are probably a distraction. with that restored, we have the south bay, just a little bit of slowing northbound 101 at 5:41. the rest of the bay shows a smooth drive. it's friday, we expect a lighter, later build. we have a little slowing that popped up in the last three minutes into concord. we have a minor crash near the carquinez bridge. the whole stretch from muir island toward 121 will be closed in the westbound direction from saturday into sunday, so we're looking at this reroute. it only adds two or three miles onto your drive, but still that's extra time through the north bay. b.a.r.t. will have track work between pleasant hill and concord, so that's also the

largest targeted raids into northern gaza. overnight the idf troops, fighter jet and drones hit antitank missile launch sites and hamas command and control centers as well. as for that threatened full-out ground assault, israel says it's still happening, though an nbc news military analyst and retired u.s. army colonel tells us that with every day of delay, it becomes less likely because of this very difficult terrain where there's still so many civilians. >> it's not entirely clear that the idf has settled on exactly what its strategy will be and how tactically it's going to go through this very difficult area. until that's done, there is likely to be a continuation of what we have now, and that, of course, makes it even more difficult, both civilians on the one hand and for the idf on the other. >> reporter: the international community continues to exert

[ laughter ] let's talk about the forecast. we're pulling off sweater weather today. >> it's cold this morning, and there is a lot going on for the weekend. so let me break it down, what to expect. we have a cold morning and a mild day ahead, with some breezy winds. overall, it's going to be pretty nice, but parts of the bay area will begin tomorrow with a frost advisory, especially in the valleys, and that happens until 10:00 tomorrow morning. and then ahead, we'll also have fire danger in the hills above 1,000 feet, all around the bay area. but it is only one degree above freezing in sonoma, and we've seen those readings in parts of the north bay, with just slightly above freezing. so it is a cold morning. we'll have more frosty mornings ahead. it's 50 in san mateo, but compare that to the 39 in palo alto. so in spots where it's a little more windy, those temperatures

are held up just a bit. and i got this beautiful picture on facebook from marion in concord, showing what we call the rainbow clouds or cloud iridescence. it is beautiful. that happens when you have those clouds that are high up in the atmosphere made of ice crystals and the sun hits it just right, where you see all on the colors of the rainbow. thank you for sending in that picture. i love cloud pictures. we could possibly see a lot more interesting clouds over the next few days. we have a cold front moving through today and our temperatures reach into the mid to upper 60s. it's going to be in the 60s and low 70s tomorrow, with oakland reaching 69 degrees and 68 in san francisco. it's only slightly warmer on sunday, but that will be the warmer of the days this weekend. so you may want to head out and do some leaf peeping for the season, head to the sierra, take some pictures of the fall colors, and also put on those costumes and take pictures with

some colorful fall foulage. we're seeing the peak of it, past the peak in parts of the sierra right now. we're just starting to see some of those colors pop up around the bay area, so much of the bay area you'll see a little bit of some yellows and some reds. you want to go out and send in those pictures as well. looking over the next several days, we do stay dry, but there is a chance of rain in the forecast for late next weekend, as well as on monday, that's november 7th. so we're dry until then. and as we now have the halloween forecast within view, expect the temperatures to reach into the low 70s, dropping down to the low 40s. so there may be an extra layer or two for halloween costumes for san francisco. i should move the icon to tuesday. it will be in the mid-60s throughout the weekend. mike, you were looking at something in richmond. >> that was a good trick. richmond, we see this truck facing the wrong direction. i realized this is in the

closure, which continues at the richmond bridge. maybe they're doing some work at the toll plaza. that might be a distraction, but everything does move smoothly as the volume moves just a bit. now, we have a couple of crashes reported on the roadway here for i-80, both eastbound. the one on the carquinez bridge is slowing traffic on the span. watch for that if you're heading into the north bay where highway 37 shows typical slowing, highway 4 typical for friday. disabled vehicle near the treasure island tunnel, counter-commute as well. westbound does show a build. a smooth drive through the tri-valley. peninsula, no problem, and the south bay, the crash did clear 85 and 101. the connecter is reopened. happening now, the san francisco library offering up a 49ers themed library card to users. patrons can pick up the new additions at any san francisco library. it's all part of a campaign aimed at getting more football
