announcing just days after california ordered the company to stop operations in the state. this is "today in the bay." good friday morning to you all. i'm marcus washington. >> i'm laura garcia. we're talking about sweater weather. kari, are you officially declaring it? >> absolutely. when you talk about temperatures in the 30s, it's past sweater weather. we're on to the heavy coats. >> there you go. >> it is 33 right now in sonoma, and we're seeing a lot of those temperatures dipping into the upper 30s and low 40s. it's only 43 in san francisco right now and 42 in concord, dublin 39 degrees. sweater weather, indeed. in san mateo, you may have to turn the heater on in the car. our morning starts out at 50 degrees. as we go throughout the day, it's going to slowly warm up as we reach into the low 60s by noon, and then eventually into the upper 60s.

across the bay area it's only in the 60s today, slightly cooler than normal. we have a few concerns about certain parts of the bay area for the weekend. i'll have more coming up in a few minutes. mike, you were saying the metering lights have been activated. >> yes, but it's also friday mode. we're looking at light traffic at the toll plaza. you do have to slow down. as we funnel down, we lose the lanes and the metering lights are active. i believe they're cycling quickly. westbound, not much of a backup at the incline. there's slowing toward san francisco and that's probably why they were activated in the first place. we have a disabled vehicle, but it is counter-commute, eastbound, the lower deck into treasure island and i don't think any lanes are blocked. we'll track that. meanwhile, highway 37, typical build. and we're looking at highway 4 with a simple slowdown just in concord. we are following breaking news overseas. the united states launching military air strikes in syria. how, the pentagon says those strikes were in retaliation for drone attacks on american bases in the region.

defense secretary lloyd austin says u.s. targeted two facilities in eastern syria used by iran's islamic revolutionary guard and affiliated groups. the military action comes amid rising tensions in the middle east, however secretary austin called the attacks, quote, separate and distinct from the ongoing conflict between israel and hamas. we turn the the latest heartbreak and fear in maine this morning. schools remain closed as a multi-state manhunt for the man who shot 18 people continues. authorities are still looking for 40-year-old robert card. he's considered armed and dangerous. investigators believe he's responsible for two mass shootings, one at a bar, the other at a bowling alley. in the meantime, we're hearing from leroy walker, the father of joey walker, the manager of that bar. he tells lester holt his son died while trying to protect others. >> he died as a hero, because he

picked up a butcher knife from somewhere, he has all that stuff near the bar, anyways, and he tried to go at the gunman to stop him from shooting anybody else. the gunman shot him twice. >> 16 of the 18 victims' identities have been released, including walker. a news conference is expected to get under way in just about an hour, and authorities plan to deliver an update on the search for the gunman. "today in the bay"'s alice barr is live outside of a hospital in lewiston. more than 36 hours after the shooting, let's talk about where this investigation stands. >> reporter: laura, everyone is eagerly awaiting that press conference you just mentioned. we've just learned it will be about an hour from now, and set to give the latest details, whatever they can now share about this all-out, full-scale search for the man responsible

for so much trauma and tragedy. an urgent manhunt by flashlight overnight as law enforcement surrounded the last known address of suspected mass murderer, robert card. it's just one area of intense focus, and until he's found, tens of thousands remain under shelter-in-place orders. >> please stay at home and be safe. >> reporter: card is suspected of killing at least 18 people and injuring 13 more, in a lewiston bowling alley and nearby restaurant and bar. >> i saw him looking down at his gun, he was facing away from our group. i turned to everybody at the bowling alley on that side, and i said everybody get out that exit door right now, live shooter. i almost wish that i was up closer to him when he came in, because every time i close my eyes, i visualize myself

attacking him. >> reporter: grief stricken families can't begin to describe the loss. >> the world lost a great girl and i lost a pressure daughter. >> reporter: a family member of the 40-year-old suspect says he struggled recently with acute mental health issues. card is a long-time army reservist and officials tell nbc news he threatened a military base and was sent by his own commanders to a mental health facility in july. >> that should have triggered the yellow flag law and he should have been separated from his weapons. >> reporter: as the community reels from maine's worst mass murder in history, now a lifetime of heartbreak for each victim taken. and as investigators search for a motive for this terrible act, they may have one significant clue, multiple law enforcement sources tell nbc news there was

a note found in the suspect's home. they've been analyzing that, trying to see if it can help direct their investigation, laura. >> that will be interesting to see. so much heartache for those families. alice, thanks for the latest. be sure to stay with us for the very latest updates throughout our morning newscast. we also provide them at nbcbayarea.com. we're tracking all of the latest developments coming into our newsroom. new overnight, a deadly crash in mountain view is under investigation. this happened just before 2:00, where northbound 85 connects with 101. officers closed the lanes for a few hours, but all are back open at this hour. chp says the car lost control, hitting a retainer wall, before catching fire. it's still unclear what caused the crash. a pair of troubling signs outside of a homeless encampment are raising worries and sparking calls to police in san francisco. early this month, police say joseph adam moore set up a

temporary camp outside stella academy catholic school and sat out signs that said free fentanyl and meth for stolen items. he's on the state's sex offender list. last night district attorney brooke jenkins filed charges against him or misdemeanor battery and creating a public nuisance. jenkins posted about the charges on social media, writing in part, quote, i share the public's frustration and concerns regarding his alleged conduct, and will do everything in my power to ensure we keep kids and families safe in our communities. well, the driverless car company cruise is pulling all of its driverless cars off the road nationwide. "today in the bay"'s ginger conejero saab is live in san francisco this morning, which is home to cruise. ginger, this comes just days after the dmv here in california suspended cruise's driverless cars throughout the state. >> reporter: and that

announcement to pull all of those cars off the road, and going beyond dmv's scope, that decision impacting operations, of course, not just in california, but also in texas and arizona. the company, marcus, releasing a statement that reads, in part, quote, the most important thing for us right now is to take steps to rebuild public trust. part of this involves taking a hard look inwards and at how we do work at cruise, even if it means doing things that are comfortable or difficult. earlier this month, a woman was pin under a cruise robotaxi in san francisco. well, the driver of another car with a human driver hit the woman, that other car took off. from the collision, the woman was thrown onto the next lane, where the driverless cruise car ran her over, pinned her underneath the car, and then dragged her as the car pulled over. that woman remains in the hospital and in serious condition. this latest move is quite a

contrast to where cruise was a little over a month ago, looking to build its presence on the roads with the first vehicle advertised to be built from the ground up to be self-driving and wheelchair accessible. we were actually there when that launched. that launch completely different in tone than the announcement that was made now. it's no surprise that -- i mean, you won't be surprised, you'll still see driverless robotaxis on the road in cities like san francisco. their competitor, waymo, i feel like is making their presence felt more, because the cruise cars aren't there, they will still continue to operate. the big question is, is this just a pit stop or will this be the end of the road? we will continue to watch, wait and see. >> watching to see what the answer will be and watching for those cars, too. thanks, ginger. 6:10 on your friday morning. taking a live look outside in san jose. this time tomorrow, parts of the bay area will be under a fire

weather watch as windy conditions are expected. the watch starts at the higher elevations at 5:00 tomorrow morning. it runs through 5:00 p.m. on sunday. sonoma, napa, marin county is affected, as well as the santa cruz mountains, eastern santa clara and the east bay hills. the national weather service says people need to use extreme caution when you're recreating outdoors. >> it's so cool, you don't think about fire danger. but we haven't had a lot of rain. we haven't had a lot of rain, the vegetation is dry, and we're going to add in wind and low humanitarian. humidity. here is a look at where we will have that fire weather watch in effect. it does start earlier in the north bay. that begins later tonight. then the rest of the bay area will be put under the fire weather watch starting tomorrow morning. so our winds will gust anywhere from 25 to 50 miles per hour. and when you are outside, you do

need to be careful, because that's the only thing that could start a fire here under these conditions, as the winds start to pick up this evening, parts of the north bay will see continuous wind gusts up to 25 to 30 miles per hour, and actually sunday morning is when we reach the peak of those high winds for the north bay, for elevations above 1,000 feet. we're watching the fire danger, as well as cool temperatures in the valleys. i'll have more on that in a few minutes. mike, you're taking a look at the flow across the bay bridge. >> westbound is our concern for the commute direction. it's building up a bit. we're looking at eastbound because that's where the disabled vehicle is reported, over from san francisco side toward the treasure island tunnel. no slowing has shown up over the last few checks. i'm going to say we don't have to worry about the person that might have had a flat tire. on the san francisco side we saw the lights bunch up. we should see a backup forming at the toll plaza. so far, the camera doesn't detect that. highway 37 shows more traffic

good friday morning. we head to martinez now with a look at how the morning will shape up. it's only 42 degrees now as you step out the door. it's a cold start here and across the bay area, with a partly cloudy morning and a slow warm-up. we only reach into the upper 60s today. i'll have a look at that and the concerns i have for the weekend in just a few minutes. the concern i had about that truck over in the work area at the richmond bridge, that has cleared because it's no longer a

distraction here. we just have these lanes backing up for the morning commute. at the bay bridge we see folks slowing approaching the toll plaza. metering lights are activated and a backup looks like it's starting to form on that section of the span as well. good morning. happy friday to you. markets still a bit nervous about tech, despite yet more good numbers. peloton says it will close its showroom in walnut creek. the company had said earlier it was done with layoffs. amazon's laid off a total of 27,000 employees since this time last year, and those cuts have helped the company reap huge profits, near record profits. $10 billion in net income for the quarter, $111 million, actually, per day. the u.s. treasury department plans to warn crypto companies about the situation in hamas,

that they are possibly funding hamas. the treasury will make those warnings today. it's been one year since elon musk took over twitter as well. you'll recall he offered to buy it at an incredibly inflated price, then tried to get out of the deal, only to have a court force him to follow through. it was one year today the deal closed. and since that time we've seen a lot of changes, even that sign on market street for a while, it was changed to a rather crude joke, then they took it down altogether, a giant x on the top of the building, they took that down as well. the biggest changes came inside the building. musk carried in a sink a year ago, and since that time x has cut 80% of its workforce, added about $13 billion in debt. it's top five advertisers have cut spending by around 70%, and some big advertisers have stopped advertising altogether. marcus and laura, less than 1%

of users have signed up to get a blue check, paying 8 bucks a month. >> a lot of people have left. thank you very much, scott. and this is interesting as well. new research shows people are leaving california at higher rates than ever before. they're going to states like texas and arizona. this is according to a stanford research report, showing california is still the state with the largest population, but its growth has stalled. two-thirds of people who responded to the survey say politics was not a major concern when deciding to move, but with the population drop, the state could lose more congressional seats. it already lost one seat after the 2020 census. a third of respondents say they decided to move because of high housing costs in california. sit tight, because happening tonight, the biggest movie of the year is coming to a big screen in the bay. >> "barbie" is being shown

so we do have a beautiful afternoon ahead, with breezy winds. and then tomorrow morning there will be a frost advisory beginning for the north bay valleys. this being the first frost that we see will really have a high impact for those sensitive plants, so you want to make sure they're taken care of. spend some time today covering them up, bringing them inside, whatever you need to do, as our temperatures will be cold again tomorrow morning. and then in the elevations above 1,000 feet across the bay area, we will have a high fire danger, so we'll be watching out for that. as far as temperatures right now, it is only 33 degrees in santa rosa right now. we're also seeing some 30s in parts of the tri-valley, with dublin dipping to 38 degrees and 39 in palo alto. and we got this beautiful picture with all of the interesting clouds we've had, the cold front moving through, and i got this one from marion in concord, showing what we call rainbow clouds or iridescent clouds. it is beautiful with those high clouds made of ice crystals, the

sun is hitting it in the perfect way where you see all of the colors in the rainbow. if you see some cool-looking clouds, tag me in your pictures at kari hall weather. it is freezing in petaluma as you step out the door. it's only 30 degrees. we will have a gradual warming trend that heads for the upper 60s for much of the bay area this afternoon, reaching 69 in east san jose, and then we go back to cold temperatures this morning with the frost advisory in effect for those areas shaded in blue. and i do think there will be other areas as well in the valleys that could be dealing with some frost. more cold and frosty mornings ahead, and mild afternoons, with breezy winds and that high fire danger extending through sunday. then by halloween, it's 73 degrees for a lot of our inland areas, but cold at night, while san francisco will continue to see highs in the mid to upper 60s. mike, it seems like we're

extend service farther into the south bay. this is "today in the bay." this is friday morning. good morning to you all. i'm marcus washington. >> i'm laura garcia. let's get a look at that forecast. certainly cool out there, kari. >> it is cold in much of the bay area. the first big cold sfap we've had of the season, so it may be a shock as you step out the door. let's get a live look in san jose and a look at those current temperatures, in the 30s in parts of the north bay. we're at 33 degrees in santa rosa, just one degree above freezing there. you may have to scrape some frost off of the windshield. upper 30s in dublin and 51 in san mateo. you can see how big of a difference it is from one microclimate to the next. in cupertino, at 9:00 it's still in the 50s. we'll be keeping sweaters on as our highs reach into the upper 60s this afternoon. we'll talk about the weekend coming up. mike, you're starting with a

look at the san mateo bridge. >> you can see the speed limit sign. westbound, you're at the limit traveling across the span from 92. once you get onto the peninsula, 280 at 92 there are reports of a crash involving, i believe, a deer that was hit. this is a reminder through fall months, we're going to see deer starting to cross the roadways. no problem for 92 or from half moon bay, an easy drive along the peninsula. south bay with very mild slowing for 101 around oakland road and 680/280 interchange. friday, typically lighter, so no major problems for 37, the build out of richmond and concord and also the bay bridge toll plaza, and no big delays for the south bay. the u.s. hit targets inside syria thursday they say are related to iran. >> scott mcgrew is following this. the pentagon says this is in

retaliation for attacks against u.s. forces. >> that's right, good morning. we're learning more about the severity of the attacks against u.s. troops. no service members killed, though a contractor did die of a heart attack. in the north part of iraq, we still have about 2,500 forces, as well as the air base, and positions inside syria where we continue to hunt for terrorists. the latest strike against us in red at the al tanf garrison, our strikes against iranian-backed militants in blue. >> the united states hit some targets in eastern syria in retaliation for attacks by iranian-backed arms against americans. this has happened before and

we've retaliated before. and as iran continues to push the envelope, it will probably happen again. >> late last week the american destroyer the uss carney fired missiles from the red sea to intercept 18 drones and missiles fired by houthi rebels in yemen. the pentagon stresses its recent actions in the area are not related to the situation in israel, but it's not not related to the situation in israel. iran backs the houthis in yemen, iran backs the malitias in syria, it also backs hezbollah, which is located just north of the israeli border in lebanon. the u.s. is hoping hezbollah and iran are getting the message, stay out of it. >> iran is certainly complicit here. without them, there is no hamas. without them, there's no hezbollah. without them, there's no malitia groups firing rockets at our troops in iraq and syria. as i said yesterday up here, we

recognize iran is monitoring these events, and in some cases they're encouraging some of these attacks. no question about it. >> the u.s. has moved two carrier groups into the region, as well as more u.s. troops. none will be on the ground to help israel directly, says the pentagon, but, of course, will be available if the war widens. >> they will be on standby, we understand that. thank you very much, scott, for the very latest. 6:34 right now. more than 36 hours after two shootings forever shaped the city of lewiston, maine, there's still no word on where the suspected gunman is. 18 people were killed. an active manhunt spanning multiple states is under way for that suspect. a news conference is expected to get under way in less than 30 minutes. nbc news will provide a special report as it happens. expect it at about 7:00 this morning. authorities plan to deliver an update on that search for the gunman. this comes as new details about 40-year-old robert card's mental

state are coming to light. nbc news's sam brock is in lewiston this morning. >> laura, good morning. right now people in this community, not just in lewiston, but as far out as 50 miles, are waking up to a shelter-in-place order as this manhunt has exceeded 36 hours, and still no signs of robert card. maine state police provided an update yesterday, 24 hours ago, talking about the fact they don't know what state he's in, they're not even sure if he's still alive. as far as critical pieces of information that are still sort of un-spooling at this hour, we've learned about the timeline of the suspect and specifically how it took him only 12 minutes to go from a bowling alley to the bar down the street. we've also learned, according to law enforcement officials, about a note found in robert card's home. what are the contents of that note? it could provide some insight into why he allegedly committed the atrocities. we are hearing directly from card's family about what his mental state was like for months

and their concerns about the fact he had deteriorated to the point where commanders in his own unit had reported that he needed a mental and psychiatric evaluation, which happened over the summer. now he purchased this weapon, apparently, legally, according to multiple sources telling nbc news that is what happened, despite all of the other circumstances that we have just described. we'll have much more on the gun laws in maine and also how this fits into a larger picture mass shootings in america. that story and more coming up on the "today" show. moving you forward, the state is giving b.a.r.t. a big boost to extend farther into the south bay. "today in the bay"'s bob redell joining us live from dublin this morning. we're talking about hundreds of millions of dollars here in new funding. >> reporter: correct. good morning to you. so people, let's say, who live in the east bay and want to take dublin b.a.r.t., they'll be able to take the train into downtown san jose and santa clara. unfortunately, we're still over a decade out from that, but a

big step forward for the transit agency, the metropolitan transportation commission has unanimously approved $375 million in funding from the state of california to go towards the $12.2 billion project, which would extend b.a.r.t. further into the south bay. the vta, which is managing the construction of this extension, is also seeking additional money from the federal government. the feds are proposing a $6 billion contribution. the vta expects a commitment for that money toward the end of next year. right now, the b.a.r.t. line into the south bay stops at berryessa north san jose. the proposed extension will add five miles of underground tunnels and four new stations into downtown san jose and santa clara. the project recently had a major cost increase and delay due to inflation, the extension is expected to be completed in 2036. it's been delayed more than a decade and over double the original budget.

reporting live, bob redell, "today in the bay." >> all right, bob. a lot of people are probably excited about the potential improvements and moving forward. thank you so much. >> just to see it happen. we've been waiting for that for a really long time in san jose. waiting for some snow. take a look at this. a live look, first snow of the 2023/24 winter season, which is nice to see. the berkeley central snow lab is reporting that they actually had some snow in that area as well. they've recorded the first measurable snowfall of the year. the lab says on wednesday the site got around 4 inches already. this is all happening in the higher elevations. >> bundle up. it's going to be cold there this weekend. if you want to get some of the views of that beautiful snow up at the very top, those mountains, it was above like 7,000, 8,000 feet for a lot of those spots in the sierra. it's now getting much colder and

we are only going to see highs in the 40s there tomorrow. look at those morning temperatures. if you're packing the bag, pack a little more. 15 degrees for the overnight temperature, and then reaching into the mid-40s. it will be nice and sunny for the weekend. and then if you're not driving all the way to the sierra, maybe going to sacramento to cheer on the warriors tonight, it's going to be cool there as well. temperatures start at about 60 degrees and drop down to the low 50s by the team we reach the end of the game. and then tomorrow in san jose, there's autism speaks walk that starts at 10:30 in the morning. you do need a jacket for the start of the walk. it will be in the mid-50s, then going into the rest of the day the sunshine warms us up. then you may wrap up the weekend in oakland at the dia de los muertos festival. it will be in the 50s as well. as we go throughout the day, the temperatures start to feel a lot

nicer. sunday we also have the 49ers game at levi's stadium. we're going to have some beautiful weather. in the upper 60s at kickoff, and it's still going to be windy, so there may be a little curve to the ball if they're trying to kick it through the goal posts. for napa this weekend, starting out in the upper 30s, but then headed for the upper 60s today, and we will have some milder temperatures due in part because it's going to be windy. so expect your hair to be all over your head in napa this weekend, but at least the temperatures will be mild with highs in the low 70s. mike, you're reporting that today, tomorrow and sunday, you may have something to watch. >> we're going to look ahead at the known issues. we know we're going to have typical slowing for san jose going on right now, same for the nimitz. it's friday, so it's going to be lighter. a chance to look ahead. we're looking at contra costa county, a build here from concord, not so much. holding steady and a little build through walnut creek. nothing dramatic.

in this area, concord and pleasant hill, we're talking about the b.a.r.t. line that travels between the two, there will be no service over the weekend, saturday and sunday. they're removing trees in anticipation of storms that may come later in the season. the county connection will take up the slack and there will be a delay because you'll have to transfer, wait for the bus, and then get back on to the b.a.r.t. lines. about a half hour through that section. predictable pattern, same for the eastshore freeway. in the north bay, typical pattern for 37. saturday night overnight, you're going to have to reroute. it adds about three miles, but it is unexpected for saturday night construction crews. over to you. coming up on "today in the bay," the all-out ground invasion of gaza by israel appears to still be on hold, but there's still plenty of military action. we'll give you an update on that. and we'll show you what communities in the bay area and beyond are doing to continue to raise awareness.

bay area in the weekend forecast coming up. and we're looking at some brake tapping. i was concerned about san jose, but it's your typical build. lighter friday overall. a few changes at the bay bridge. i'll show you what's going on there coming up. a quarter until 7:00 right now. once again, israel is launching targeted rates into northern gaza, however the full ground invasion still appears to be on hold. >> kris sanchez is joining us from the newsroom. this is growing tension and a lot of overnight developments. >> reporter: it's been 21 days of growing tension, but now israel defense forces say they took out a top hamas commander in an air strike hours after its largest targeting raids into northern gaza. overnight the idf, the israel defense forces troops and fighter jets, drones, they all hit antitank missile launch sites and hamas command and control centers as well.

as for the threatened full ground assault, israel says it's still happening. though an nbc news military analyst and retired u.s. army colonel told us just this morning, that with every day of delay, it becomes less likely in this very difficult terrain where there are still so many civilians. >> it's not entirely clear that the idf has settled on exactly what its strategy will be and how tactically it's going to go through this very difficult area. until that's done, there is likely to be a continuation of what we have now, and that, of course, makes it even more difficult for civilians, on the one hand, and for the idf on the other. >> reporter: the international community continues to exert diplomatic pressure, calling for a cease-fire in the name of the civilians caught in the middle. the council on american islamic relations held a news conference
