good morning. it is sunday, october 29th. thank you so much for joining us as we take this live look outside santa clara university. a beautiful site on a chilly morning. slightly warmer than what we saw at this time yesterday. thanks so much for joining us. i'm kira klapper. before we get to our forecast, we want to let you know, we are following breaking news out of the tampa, florida area, where at least two people are dead in

a shooting at a crowd halloween street party. another 18 people were injured. police say it happened just before 3:00 a.m. local time. witnesses say it started as a street fight between two groups of people, in a lively part of the town with boutiques, bars, and cuban and latin american eateries. hundreds of innocent people were caught in the cross fire. according to authorities, one person who may have been involved surrendered to police. police believe there were at least two shooters. we will continue to update this story as we learn more. and we are going to turn back now to one of our top stories that elevated fire danger we're facing. meteorologist rob mayeda is here this morning. so good to see you. it ended up being a lovely day yesterday for some of us, but people don't realize that the winds are picking up and it's dry out there. >> yeah, the cause of the clear skies and the warm temperatures we had yesterday, the offshore

winds starting to pickup and seeing the clear skies this morning. humidity numbers, 51 degrees in san jose. humidity numbers dropping off down to 20% in walnut creek. look what's happening in oakland. an effect of those offshore breezes, down to 22% relative humidity. to get that at this hour, you need those offshore winds picking up. you can see humidity numbers that we would see typically during the afternoon, already outside this morning, as you see there, offshore winds around the bay area and temperatures much more mild than they were at the same time yesterday. so for the north bay, inlarpd, east bay, including the diablo range, red flag warning through 5:00 today. coming up, we'll look at the peak wind speeds we are expecting today and where the next rain chances return in the forecast coming up in about ten minutes. >> rob, thanks so much. see you in ten. as he just mentioned, much of the bay area remains on fire watch throughout the rest of the day today until 5:00 p.m. that has fire departments across

the bay area on alert. in fairfield, the city closed rockville regional park and other spaces. the closure caught some visitors hoping to hike and bike by surprise. the main concern, of course, low humidity mixed with high winds. >> the reason we do that is just to help reduce new starts that can happen, especially in those time periods where those new starts can expand very quickly. we're predicting that today and tomorrow can be that type of a situation to help protect the houses surrounding the area. >> they're not the only ones taking precautions. contra costa fire boosted staffing for this weekend. and the watershed in marin county is closed to cars until that red flag warning ends at 5:00 this evening. to track the conditions in your neighborhood, download our nbc bay area weather app. it is free. we'll send breaking news and weather alerts straight to your phone. turning now to our continued

coverage of the war between israel and hamas. this marks day two of what israeli prime minister benjamin netanyahu is calling a second phase of the war. the new phase was marked by israeli tanks rolling into northern gaza. unlike trial runs in recent weeks, we're told the tanks will work with ground troops already in the area, until their mission is complete. netanyahu is warning of a long and difficult war ahead. he says the goal is to "destroy the military and governmental capabilities of hamas and bring hostages home." anyone left in northern gaza is being urged to leave. here in the u.s., thousands of people marched yesterday calling for a cease-fire to protect civilians in gaza. demonstrators took over major city streets, including some right here in the bay area. in san francisco, pro-palestinian demonstrators marched through the streets to make their wish for a cease-fire

heard. and they even blocked part of highway 101 in the process. nbc bay area's tom jenson continues our coverage. >> reporter: we've seen a number of these then administrations in san francisco over the past two weeks, both pro israeli and pro palestinian. but this is the largest yet. and it had traffic at a stand still on the freeway through the city. frustrated drivers tried to get around roadblocks. as pro-palestinian marchers, an estimated 15,000 of them, rallied in san francisco. and eventually, marched to the freeway, forcing police to close it for more than an hour. >> the children of gaza and the innocent babies in gaza have no one to speak for them. we are their voices. >> i think there should be a cease-fire now, because the reports coming out of gaza are that thousands of people are being killed, and a great majority of them are children.

>> reporter: palestinian health officials estimate 7,000 people have been killed since israeli forces began air and ground attacks in gaza in retaliation for the october 7th attack in hamas and israel, where 1400 have been killed. >> we all condemn hamas, but we also condemn the 75 years of occupation that led to the actions of october 7th. it didn't happen in a vacuum. >> reporter: rashad has family in gaza and was last able to reach them two days ago when they described the situation as dire and getting worse. >> they said we're waiting for a cease-fire or to die. there is no food. >> reporter: they want to bring more attention to what's happening in gaza. >> when innocent children and babies are dying, and the world is silent, there's something drastically wrong in the world we live in. >> reporter: thom jensen, "today in the bay." >> today, there will be rallies for pro israeli and pro palestinian groups. in san jose, the group freedom

road socialist organization, will gather at city hall to protest the killing of palestinian people in gaza. they are calling for a cease-fire that starts at 1:00 p.m. and in san francisco, bay area jewish organizations will gather for a rally for israel. they also are calling for a cease-fire. the end of killing israelis in the middle east, and for all the hostages to be released. that starts at 1:30. for the latest dopnts on the israel-hamas war, when we're not on the air, go to our website, nbcbayarea.com. well, you may have heard hollywood is mourning the sudden and shocking death of beloved actor matthew perry, who was found dead at his los angeles area home yesterday. perry, best known for his role on the hit nbc sitcom "friends." ♪ there for you, there for you ♪ >> of course, perry played chandler bing on the show that

ran for ten seasons between 1994 and 2004. his character was a fan favorite known for his sarcasm and his one liners. a representative for the actor and law enforcement source tell nbc news he apparently drowned at his pacific palisades home. l.a. fire says rescuers were called to the home around 4:00 about a "water emergency." no one was taken to the hospital. foul play is not suspected, but police officers remained on scene even late into the evening. other details about perry's death were not made immediately available as the investigation continues. off screen, perry struggled with addiction for years, which led to several stints in rehab. it's something he revealed in his memoir "friends, lovers, and the big terrible thing" which was released one year ago. fans flocked to the "friends" apartment building in greenwich village in new york city. some took pictures of the famous

building. others leaving candles and flowers in perry's memory, many saying they were shocked. >> i just finished his book like earlier this year on audible. i think, like, he really fought to have, like, a great life. so it's kind of sad that he -- he is now on the other side. >> the l.a. county medical examiner is expected to conduct an autopsy to determine the cause of death. perry was only 54 years old. he will be missed. we have put together a look back at perry's career. just go to nbcbayarea.com and click "remembering matthew perry" at the top of our home page. in san francisco, a pedestrian was killed yesterday in a violent car crash on knob hill. it happened yesterday morning at the intersection of post and high. that white car you see there, police say it was speeding down the street when it hit a black car. that crash then redirected the

white car, which hit a man standing on the corner. he died at the scene. the driver of the black car was not injured. police did arrest the driver of the white car. they have not said what charges that person may face. it's almost 7:10 on your sunday this morning. much more ahead. coming up, we go live to washington, d.c. for our

presidential candidate florida governor ron desantis. i understand he might be alluding to how he would respond if he were president now. >> that's right. i mean, i asked him basically what will you do to make sure that people like the shooter in maine do not fall through the cracks of the mental health system. we know he did receive somemental health services and gain access to weapons. and effectively, governor desantis leaned into the idea that there needs to be more mental health services and an institutionalization of people who need it, and we really went back and forth how specifically that would work and how he would prevent someone like a robert card, of course, the shooter in this case, from falling through the cracks. so it is a robust discussion, but a window into how he would approach it if he were in the oval office right now. but bottom line, even though you have joe biden and other democrats calling for an assault weapons ban, it's really hard to

see that that would happen right now in this climate, given that you have a republican led house, which would be opposed to significant new restrictions, and given that the nation is so deeply divided right now. so i do think what you will see is a lot of discussion on whether there are any steps that can be taken in between, any more measured steps for example, kira, that lawmakers can agree on. that's going to be undoubtedly one of the things that the newly installed house speaker mike johnson deals with as he starts his first full week. >> that will be interesting to see. i think we need to let you go, but you sat down with our former governor, arnold schwarzenegger, in the midst of that house speaker chaos you just mentioned. does he have any perspective on how fractured his party is now? >> well, i sat down with him a couple of weeks ago. i sat down with him before all of this happened, but i asked him about how deeply divided the country is right now. he's really concerned about it,

observing your weekday commute and that's tomorrow morning on "today in the bay." >> it is time now to check in with meteorologist rob mayeda who has a look at the forecast. it turned out to be lovely yesterday for a lot of us. but that wind threat, the dry conditions are still a fire danger today. >> and we got clear skies this morning. beautiful view of the golden gate bridge behind us. to get these clear skies this time of the year, you sometimes need offshore wind. even though it's not too gusty depending on where you are, it is making an impact on the temperature and the humidity. 51 degrees in san jose. humidity at 39%. we'll take you out to the tri valley. 21%, the relative humidity at livermore airport. that's mid afternoon dry to start the day when relative humidity is at the highest this hour. northeast wind in oakland, even

sfo typically you have to watch for some fog. not the case. clear skies. east-northeast wind at 20 miles per hour. 62 degrees to start the morning. you can see right in the bay area, a big change in the temperatures. if you have wind this morning, chances are you are a lot warmer than the same time yesterday. fairfield and napa, close to 20 to 22 degrees warmer than this time yesterday. but a lot drier with those humidity numbers in the teens this morning, out to solano county. and calistoga, just 12% humidity as the offshore winds pick up. we do think right now, approaching sun rise, this should be the peak of those winds for the north bay. you see the purple starting to fade around noon and wind speeds should come down as we approach the evening. further south, wind speeds not as strong around the south bay, but they are briefly gusting for the santa cruz mountains and the diablo range. through the morning, wind speeds back off as we approach the evening. and that red flag warning for the bay area, the entire north

bay, inland east bay hills, santa cruz mountains should be done by 5:00 later on today. so morning temperatures, mostly 50s outside early today. wind chills in the valleys have dropped to the upper 30s. by noon and mid afternoon, highs in the upper 60s and low 70s. very dry air out there. so we'll see a warm start to the football game. the 49ers/bengals today, near 70 degrees. the wind direction, northwest at times, 10 to 20 miles per hour out of levi stadium. now, the two chances we could see showers, one coming up, good news, not for halloween. trick or treat is just fine. thursday, right there, a chance of north bay showers. better chance for finding some rain early next saturday, with an emphasis it does look to be around the north bay, clearing by next sunday, as we quantify those rain chances for you. chance on thursday and saturday right now. stay tuned. could see a little bit of rain coming back to the bay area,

asking yesterday, but the weather is so nice. >> that's the issue, the sign we'll see the winds pick up increasing around sun rise. this is the map of concern today. the red flag warning for the entire north bay, the inland east bay and the santa cruz mountains through 5:00 this evening. it's having an impact on the temperatures. obviously the wind and the humidity. san jose right now 5shgs 1 degrees. 59% humidity but very dry conditions. livermore, down to 20% humidity. look at sfo airport. east-northeast wind at 20, and 37% the humidity there. the offshore breezes are picking up, dropping the humidity levels around the bay area. we'll see those peak wind gusts from now to about midday. then we'll see those winds back off as temperatures climb up into the 70s today. coming up, we'll talk more about when we might see some rain chances improving fire weather conditions around the bay area and our seven-day forecast in

to track the conditions in your neighborhood, be sure to download our our free nbc bay area weather app. we'll send breaking news and weather alerts right to your phone. another sideshow. this one in the east bay ending with a brush fire. speaking of those fire conditions, the sideshow activity started just before midnight at the intersection of cavallo road and wilbur avenue in antioch. then it loved to the intersection of lone tree and deer valley road. people were setting off fireworks that caused a vegetation fire. and then you could see that fire burning in the back ground as fires continue to do donuts. police responding. at one point, two cars in the sideshow crashed into one another. one of the drivers drove off. the other did more donuts.

>> i had no idea i would be racing and going fast at 64. >> reporter: judy just qualified for the u.s. skate games in rome next year, where he will be a member of the u.s. team. >> i was super surprised and excited. >> reporter: for judy, 64 is a number, but right now she's focused on number two, because she's ranked second in the world. she started skateboarding when she was 13 in her driveway. she admits she hit some bumps in the road, sometimes the only woman competing. and was even shut out of competitions completely. >> i asked one of the people that was putting on the race, you know, how come i wasn't invited? they said, well, when a chick can go down a hill, it does mts look as gnarly. >> reporter: after five decades, she's shredded the glass ceiling and paved the way for other female athletes by fighting for

more women's divisions. in addition to training on her board in santa cruz, the 64-year-old does cross fit five times a week. >> seeing everybody else start to fall off, she's been one of the only people that's started to increase and get better and better over time. >> reporter: and judy has no intention of slowing down. >> for some reason, i'm on a skateboard, i'm not afraid. knock on wood, knock on something, because i still have a low fear factor. >> reporter: she hopes slalom will be included in the olympics. but right now she's training like an olympian just in case. marianne favro, nbc bay area news. 7:40 right now. still to come, putting mental health at the forefront. the reason is encouraging

our morning begins with a weather alert due to red flag conditions across the bay area hills, clear skies. the golden gate bridge on this sunday morning, 58 degrees. not much wind, but look at that humidity. it is dry around the bay. 30% in san francisco. over in san jose, 51 degrees. 39% the relative humidity. as we move inland, that is livermore. 52, warmer to start the morning, and the humidity numbers at 21%. final stop takes us to oakland. you see there, 56 degrees. notice the wind direction. northeast at 10. for it to be this dry this early in the morning, you need the offshore winds down to 22%. the relative humidity, starting off 3 degrees in calistoga in the wind. 44 degrees there in santa rosa. running a lot warmer than the

same time yesterday. fairfield, 22 degrees warmer than yesterday. mid afternoon dry humidity numbers, down to 13% in fairfield. 12% this morning in calistoga, as the offshore winds pick up. if there's good news about this offshore wind pattern, we're close to the peak of the wind speeds. speeds should come down as the red flag warning expires around 5:00. later on this evening, less gusty conditions, though we think for the south bay, santa clara valley, dry winds at time and on the decline past lunchtime today. temperatures start the morning in the 40s, 50s, and 60s depending on how much wind you have. and then this afternoon, highs topping out in the upper 60s to low 70s around most of the bay area and very bone dry conditions in the afternoon. nice for football. 49ers/bengals, low 70s. winds out of the north at 10 to 20 miles per hour. next best chance for finding

no offense to the midwest, my mom is from there. >> challenger incumbent rarely succeed. you have to go back to 1968 when bobby kennedy and mccarthy challenged johnson. but this is an unusual situation. joe biden is not looking good with democrats. take a look at a poll that we found from just a couple of weeks ago. how do you feel about biden being the nominee? 33% say good idea. 67%, last i heard, that was 2/3, say no, we want somebody else. enter dean phillips. that's the story. he said look, somebody has to go. biden shouldn't be there. >> some think he's too old, we need to move into youth. so what do we know about dean phillips? please. >> he's an interesting guy from minnesota. 54 years old. moderate democrat. third term from a very wealthy family.

he himself is quite wealthy. those are important things. he supports climate change. he supports things like a strong economy, of course. he supports a woman's right to choose, lower health care costs, all of these things. he's voted, mind you, for biden's proposals 100% of the time. you say -- it gets back to what you said, i asked for somebody else to run, nobody else is running. biden is too old. that's the problem. we need a generational change. >> kind of like no one else is going to do it. i'm going to do it. >> and reluctantly, but he's throwing himself in the ring. >> so do you think he has a chance? >> no. i mean, look, i shouldn't be so blunt, but here's the story. they have the new hampshire primary coming up. he filed for it. biden did not file because it's not an official primary. so the question is, how does he do, that is to say phillips in the primary, how does he do in a

welcome back. here's a quick look at the top stories we are following on this sunday morning, including the breaking news of a shooting at a crowded halloween celebration in the tampa, florida area. we do have brand new video, and a warning this video might be disturbing to watch. it shows people running to safety. we are told at least 18 people were injured. witnesses say it started as a street fight between two groups

of people. one person who may have been involvd surrendered to police. police believe there were at least two shooters. back here in the bay area, this sideshow in the east bay ending with fireworks, which ig -- ignited a brush fire. this started just before midnight in antioch. you see right there, people were setting off fireworks, with now with these dry and windy conditions, caused a vegetation fire. you see it in the background there. at one point, two cars were doing donuts and crashed into each other. one driver drove off. you can see the fire burning in the background and growing, as other drivers continue to do the sideshow. it lasted about 15 minutes before police were able to come in and disburse the fires.

and speaking of much of the bay area is on fire watch throughout today until 5:00 p.m. that has fire departments across the bay area on alert. in fairfield, the city closed various parks and opened spaces through tomorrow morning. the closures caught some visitors by surprise. the main concern as we have been discussing from firefighters is the low humidity mixed with high winds. contra costa county's fire boosted staffing for the weekend, and the watershed in marin county is closed. all right. speaking of, rob has one last check of the forecast before we go. >> red flag warning, the topic of the day through 5:00 this evening. that is what we are watching for fire danger in the north bay and east bay hills, as we watch the temperatures climb into the low seths this afternoon. breezy and dry. >> people at the lower elevations will enjoy the beautiful weather. okay, rob, thanks. tonight is football night in america right here on nbc bay
