our website. our team is posting updates of the situation as it continues to develop. governor newsom is back in california after wrapping up his weeklong trip to china. he landed about half an hour ago. the governor spent his last day in china testing the tesla gigafactory with that city's mayor. they also launched a new private ownership to protect the environment and accelerating transportation options, among other things. the tesla gigafactory in shanghai is one of the most reductive plants in the world. thousands of cars are made there every week. strong winds fanned flames. this particular fire started this morning north of petaluma. it used to be a chicken ranch that was repurposed as a fertilizer manufacturer.

firefighters say strong winds, low humidity, made that firefight very challenging. at this point, we don't know what sparked the fire. tense moments for a homeowner in venetia as flames came within feet of their back yard. the fire broke out around noon between lake herman road and oxford way. the area was still under a red flag warning at that time, but they got every thing under control quickly. no evacuations were needed. we were so concerned about the wind and fire this weekend. has that alleviated for us? >> those that expire at 5:00 as the wind speeds have backed off. but boy, it really tried out the air around the bay area for a time today. humidity levels are in the single digits around the north bay and the east bay, and we were 30% to 40% humidity in san jose. clear skies are quite dry. good news though, the gusting winds which were on the now bay

is a fresh crime in antioch that is now being blamed in an illegal sideshow. that's not a movie. that is real life. this is what happened at the intersection of kabbalah road and wilbur avenue in antioch around midnight. look at that. several cars, the drivers just doing dangerous donuts. will hanging onto the windows on the outside. at one point, two cars collided, someone also set off fireworks. police say that set off the fire. when police and firefighters arrived, the crowd did pick up, and quickly contain the fire, we are not sure if they made any arrests related to those people doing those donuts. caltrans is warning drivers about yet another major road closure this week -- eastbound highway 84 is going to be close to the bridge overnight. tomorrow all the way through friday. it runs until 5:00 the next morning. crews will be repaving that's such a road. drivers headed to the p east

bay by peninsula are told to take the bridge at highway 237. delayed again. the fifth year in a row the state has postponed the commercial crab season. >> the problem is that humpback whales are still migrating south along the coast, and those whales get tangled up in commercial crabbing here. tom jensen reports grabbers have unique ways to pay the bills, even with that commercial season delay. >> the bay area's commercial grabbers got their news friday. the annual crab season will be delayed again this year because there are too many migrating humpback whales in the area, more than 100 last count. >> it's really difficult, especially this year, because he didn't have a salmon season this year because of rain in the last five years. bay area fishermen also lost money when the salmon condition was closed due to poor water conditions. they will now also face at least a short crab season.

schools were invited to a special screening of the biopic of hernandez life in san jose this afternoon. he gave a talk, answer questions. the movie is called 1 million miles away, and it is michael peña as hernandez. the movie is the 12 rejection letters that hernandez got from nasa before finally being considered for the astronaut program. talk about perseverance. today, he always encourages people to make sure they set goals. the journey is just as rewarding as the destination. >> i would obviously get disappointed when i wouldn't get selected, but i would always sort of console myself and say, hey, what's the worst that could happen if i never get selected as an astronaut? wanting to be an astronaut motivated me to get my engineering degree, go to graduate school, become a pilot, but i've certified, when a third language, and work in a premier national laboratory. not a bad consolation prize. i was happy for it.

as we have for monday following tuesday and on into wednesday. we start to see those humidity numbers are cover closer to the bay. the reason why we don't have a red flag warning right now, is that the wind speeds don't qualify. this map yesterday had purple and blue, indicating, again, those wind gust about 40 miles an hour. not the case. tomorrow morning, still in offshore breeze. so temperatures are going to be dropping off in those when shelter valleys around santa rosa, bayside temperatures in the 40s to low 50s. now watch how quickly these temperatures climb. you will certainly need a jacket by the afternoon. oakland in the low 70s, mid-70s san jose. upper 70s around morgan hill. temperatures around santa rosa heading into east bay, and day. not much in the way of cloud cover tomorrow.

halloween, though, we will begin to see an increase in high clouds, not whether producing clouds, just a mix of clouds and sunshine. most temperatures now around halloween in the 80s. san jose, the midst 70s. during the day for halloween, wednesday will likely be the warmest day, numbers seen there in the upper 70s to low 80s. and then thursday begins chance number one of two and we see some showers approaching the bay area. that thursday likely to be mainly for the north bay, and then another opportunity comes in. this is a better one early next weekend clearing skies on sunday to quantify who might see the most rain thursday. clearly, it is the north bay. it's a weather system represents a better chance for some rain showers in the bay area, which we needed, because we have the red flag warning in the last 24 hours. good timing for halloween. 70s for halloween, mid-to-upper 70s around the interior, and then after that, we track a few

united autoworkers approved a tentative deal with ford motors today. the agreement includes new plan investments, a 20% wage increase, and a $5000 ratification bonus. the 4.5 your tentative deal will now be presented to 57,000 uaw and ford members for boating. yesterday, workers reached a tentative deal with the lantus, voting and ratification is expected to take a few weeks. the union has yet to reach a new agreement with gm despite being close to a deal last week. with halloween just two days away, you may have noticed the spirit halloween horse popping up in your neighborhood. >> nbc's brian cheung takes us

this after robert cards body was found friday night. they continue to process the crime scene today. the associated press is reporting that just last month, police sent out his white bulletin about card. his superiors, their supervisors, and the river alerted authorities that he had fled the military base. they tried to find a free wellness check and put it and him. his family has also come forward to say they were worried about him reese only. law enforcement found a note at his home expressing paranoid views. a man accused of driving a tesla off a cliff on purpose with his family inside his back in court this week. a pasadena is facing charges of trying to kill himself, his wife, and his two children. the tesla he was driving plunged off a 300 foot cliff note doubles flat. his wife initially told paramedics that he had driven off that cliff deliberately, that he had been depressed. he has pled not guilty and says

he was -- the town is been evaluated by a mental health x hurts, and will be admitted to the court with a hearing. pharmacy staff at walgreens and several other u.s. drugstore chains are planning a nationwide walk out darting tomorrow. organizers are calling it pharma get in. they are encouraging pharmacy workers to walk off the job to protest unsafe working conditions, specifically workers say they have struggled with understaffing, low pay, and increased expectations for management for years. the walkout could impact hundreds of stores across the country. the spokesperson for walgreens said the company recognizes the incredible work of pharmacist and has taken steps to support its pharmacy team. last month marked the 100 anniversary of eight earthquake in japan that killed nearly 100,000 people. most of the fires were after the shaking stopped. >> we are told that japan made a significant change as a result, a change the bay area

today. japan now requires gas meters like this one, which automatically cut off gas flow when they sense shaking. hawthorne says that technology could help preempt half the expected fires after a quake. giving the city's 44 engine companies a fighting chance to save the city. >> if you can cut those fires in half, that is found. >> erin peskin says, they've already led the way with strict building standards, and is spending billions to ensure fire crews have enough water to fight fires. >> it makes perfect sense that we put our money where our mouth is. >> reporter: two decades ago, a state panel concluded the benefit of preventing gas for fires will be outweighed by the cost. including delays from crews having to go out and relight pilot lights for tens of thousands of undamaged homes. since then, san francisco has

failed to act, even when a city task force was approved in 2017 that benefits gas shut off devices and would be significantly greater. >> it's better to have a house with no gas and no house. >> carl strand represents a firm that makes gas shut off devices that you can install yourself. a ball simply moves into place to shut off the gas during strong shaking. we just have to shut it off within five seconds. >> reporter: so far los angeles is the only big city in the state to embrace automatic shut off devices. that came after 50 gas fires erupted from the 1994 northridge quake. he says it's time for san francisco to try again. >> there is no time like the present. i'm not going to cry about why it didn't happen until now. >> they are embracing the concept of automatic meter shut off technology with a project in the works to evaluate two prototype meters similar to

robin thomas is today's bay area proud. and harvey green elementary school. june was a parent volunteer with the former librarian, who suggested he apply for an assistant position. >> he told me to apply, and i did. but she sent me the wrong link. i accidentally became the permanent library and. >> reporter: but there is one other big change in his life recently, which is sadly not a complete story. a few years ago, he noticed an unsteadiness while walking. it's something called ataxia, a disease his father had, and something he always knew he had a 60% chance of contracting.

>> it affects the cerebellum. the cerebellum is shrinking. >> reporter: it means he is walking with a cane now, but will eventually need a wheelchair. he is not sure when that will be, so he is setting out to do some things he always wanted to do while he still can. he signed up for the honolulu marathon this december, and next year hopes to fulfill a lifelong dream to climb mount fuji. >> many people say, i want to do this someday. and someday is always in the future. just go and do it. and so my message is, don't wait till sunday. just do it. >> reporter: this is an all for himself. he has a son, who like he did, must live with the possibility of ataxia. he wants to use his adventures

to raise money for a cure so his son won't ever have to face what his father did. but even if he does, his son will have an example of how to make the most of whatever life throws at you. garvin thomas, nbc bay area news. the monarch butterflies have returned to the coast after years of population decline. they travel to the pacific grove monarch sanctuary, and these guys have been coming here at least once a year for the past 15 years take photos. the monarch populations have declined over the years, but over 3000 been covered this year by the pacific grove national history museum, a dramatic change after record lows in 2020, when the count was 0. >> it was dwindling, getting less and less every year.

olympics, we got to have halloween, which is this tuesday. we have temperatures warming up as we had to that lower part of the week, and were about to be dressing in layers over the next couple of days. chilly mornings, but warmer afternoons, which does include halloween and the wednesday before. those rain chances shop later this week. right now, 62 degrees in san jose, mostly cloudy skies taking you over to walnut creek. technically still in offshore breeze. 56 humidity, recovering from the low teens earlier today. still pretty crisp out there, and across the county, 58 degrees in oakland, humidity recovery underway around the bay. looks kind of dry in sfo, even though it has switched back to a west wind now at 63 degrees. so what really drove the red flag warning was the strong gusty winds over the top here, the diablo range, mount diablo. and now those winds are backing off.

with it, they are not going to carry that red flag warning into monday morning. clear skies and dry air, much like sleeping with a blanket at night. less moisture in the air and doesn't retain as much heat. some of these areas, tri-valley included, i would not be surprised if you have the upper 30s tomorrow morning, and we recover pretty well in the mid- to-upper 60s and our heist tomorrow, bayside low 70s, mid- 70s in san jose, and south of san jose. speaking of this halloween forecast, that is hi cloud cover, patchy local wild, and during the day, it looks gorgeous. mostly mid-70s around the bay area, including hayward and san mateo, san jose. 80 degrees on tuesday afternoon, mid-70s around solano county and the north bay. wednesday looks to be the warmest day of the week with 80s and reach around san jose. and look at oakland and moraga. mid-70s wednesday. then we begin to see cooling

if 7-7. the bengals have no trouble moving the ball all along the field with the jet niners defense. joe burrow throws a second touchdown pass of the third order, and they leave 14-10 at the halftime. after calling an interception near the end of the third order, he's picked up on his next row in the fourth quarter. a suspension interception in the past three games. on the bengals next play, burrow and jamar chase making it look easy. it's a 17 yard touchdown, tangles of 14. the niners respond, throwing across his body and across the field for his second touchdown of the game. that makes it a 1 score game. just three minutes to go in regulation. he high steps into the end zone, and the bengals and the 30 niners there third loss in a row and their third loss in levi stadium in nearly a year. the bengals be the 49ers, 31- 17. >> i do believe we have the
