temperatures are all over the place after the gusty winds over the weekend, and this morning we are starting out in the upper 30s in parts of the north bay. in santa rosa, sonoma, upper 30s right now. we're at 39 in palo alto, but as you head to los gatos, 54 degrees. we're going to see our temperatures heading upward today, as we are going to see those highs reaching into the low to mid-70s. we'll talk more about halloween in a few minutes. there's police activity in the east bay. >> now we have a closure, it was originally just the on-ramp, getting onto eastbound 80. both and on and off-ramp are affected and there's mention about crockett boulevard, which would have been your alternate. i think what's going to happen is this section of cummings skyway is blocked off because of police activity, so we'll continue to follow that. we'll get more detail coming up.

there is a smooth flow of traffic to and from the carquinez bridge. the rest of contra costa county looks fine. there is a crash clearing from 101 near tully. over to you. breaking news this morning out of contra costa county, that crash under investigation. so this happened around 1:30 this morning on the eastbound on-ramp to interstate 80 from the cummings skyway. the on-ramp still shut down at this hour. no other details are being released at this time. we're going to continue to update the story on air, as well as online, as we get more information. developing now in san francisco in the east bay, multiple scenes and a suspect in custody in a bomb squad investigation. san francisco police say it started about 6:00 last night as a call about an assault. then it turned into a pursuit. police say the suspect threw something out of the car window as he sped across the city and then went into martinez. the chp eventually took a suspect into custody, putting him in an ambulance.

no word on how he was injured. a police bomb squad then used a robot to inspect the suspect's car and examine what appeared to be small dents in the side of at least two police cars. ahead, ginger conejero saab will joining us with a live report on that ongoing investigation. an east bay city taking action to fight crime and it's going beyond its borders and asking for help. >> kris sanchez is talking about how that's paying off. talk to us about what antioch is getting. >> reporter: what they've been asking for is help, they've been asking for help with money and with law enforcement bodies. antioch is struggling with crime and a police force that is not robust enough for its city. but today the antioch mayor is announcing some help for local businesses. what's the connection? well, antioch is giving a half million dollars in grants to fight crime by helping those businesses. mayor lamar thorpe is announcing the $500,000 to help businesses,

shopping centers, nonprofits in neighborhoods with the highest levels of crime. they want these businesses to stay open, and businesses can use this money to provide greater safety in order to remain open and keep employees on the payroll. now, this is just some of what law enforcement is dealing with in antioch. firefighters had their hands full this weekend, after a sideshow, an illegal sideshow happened near wilbur avenue. two cars collided. someone was also setting off fireworks, and that sparked a brush fire nearby. firefighters then had to fight that. just last week, the state senator who represents antioch called on the governor and the california highway patrol to help provide patrols in the city of antioch. mayor thorpe has been quoted as saying that this is a city of 120,000 residents, and at any given time there are just four or five officers patrolling the streets. half of the city's 87 police

officers are on leave because of investigations into the department and a text messaging scandal. the mayor's announcement is coming up at 11:00. we'll bring you an update as soon as we get new information. right now, israeli military forces are increasing their presence of military vehicles near the border of gaza. this comes as the country continues to ramp up on ground operations. prime minister benjamin netanyahu is calling for the three week old israel/hamas war a fight for israel's existence. he is warning of a long and difficult war ahead. also this morning, the number of hostages being held by hamas is being updated to 239 people. here is "today in the bay"'s brie jackson following the latest developments for us. >> reporter: by air and on the ground, israel is in intensifying its attacks against hamas. >> these are their decisions, these are their operations. but it is certainly the case

borealis is getting calls from customer about when they will be open. >> people are chomping at the bit right now. they're so excited for the snow to come down and for snow to mean that the ski resort is going to open. we're going to continue with our snowmaking efforts with all of those cold windows and we will open as soon as we can. >> they're set to reopen on november 17th, but if there's enough snow and the conditions are right, they may open sooner. meteorologist kari hall has been looking at that for us. i'm ready to go skiing. i don't know how to do it that well, but i'm ready. >> i was looking at the forecast, it's showing some rain and even up the mountain the high temperature is still getting into the 50s. they're going to have to work really hard to make some snow at night. so we are looking at a clear view. we did have a little bit of snow on the mountains, once the sun rises we'll be able to see it on

contains more caffeine than a can of red bull and monster energy drinks combined. the company says it should be consumed in moderation and is not recommended for children, pregnant or nursing women. the warning is on the website and app. halloween tomorrow may be a fun time for kids but it can be a spooky time for parents knowing how much sugar is in all that candy haul they bring home. >> one utah family are sparking a lot of debate online after introducing the switch witch, which limits their child's sugar intake. the jensen family says after their 2-year-old daughter goes trick-or-treating, she actually chooses five pieces of candy out of halloween treats that she got. the remaining candy left on the porch, and while she's sleeping, the switch witch takes the sweets and switches it with a toy. that video has been seen more than 10 million times.

because they kind of are all over the place. hayward, right now it is 57 degrees, and a lot of times when the wind is still breezy, the temperatures stays up just a bit. martinez is at 55, but you compare that to dublin at 39, about the same in palo alto, and in san francisco it is 47 degrees. so we're starting out very chilly, and then as we take a look at our highs for today, we're going to reach up to 71 degrees. we don't have any temperatures at the bottom of the screen so maybe we should drop that. we're going to see the highs reaching into the low 70s for parts of the tri-valley. and then for tomorrow, about the same. we're still looking at some nice and comfortable afternoons. it's just going to be cool during those late mornings and early evenings. so looking at our long-range forecast, when could we see rain? there's a little bit possible on thursday, especially for the north bay. but there may be a better chance late saturday into early sunday morning, and we could see that

rain also continue into early next week with a couple of waves of these storm systems coming in. so how much rain could we see? stretching this out all the way through sunday, parts of the north bay, of course, getting the higher amounts, especially near the coastline. maybe another inch to inch and a half of rainfall. when you look at san jose, really not expecting much there. maybe a few hundredths of an inch over the course of a week. so we can see as we go throughout the week it's going to be nice, temperatures in the mid to upper 70s, and cool for those late night and early mornings. then a couple of slight rain chances. mike, you've been watching one area in particular for the commute. >> you're talking about the on and off-ramps here at cummings skyway off of eastbound 80. there's still police activity. we're still tracking that. it affects only the folks getting onto or off of the freeway at cummings skyway. a little farther north, also i-80 eastbound, we do have reports of an overnight crash involving a deer, i believe. no injuries to the people

didn't add up so she turned to consumer investigator's chris chmura's team for help. >> good morning. linda in san jose got this $250 target gift card and put it in a drawer for safe keeping. a few weeks later she tried to use it for the first time t. balance was zero. linda complained to target. a rep said someone in arizona had spent her 250 bucks. linda said her card never left her drawer and she hasn't left california in years. but target said that it couldn't find any suspicious activity on the card. linda asked us for help. we suspected fraud, just like so many other cases we've shared right here with you. that was news to linda, though. she said, i had no idea there were bad people out there zeroing out people's gift cards as soon as it's activated. so many. so we reached out to target. target then sent linda a $250 replacement card. a rep said thanks, again, for

meteorologist kari hall is tracking what we can expect. >> it's starting out cold across much of the bay area. we're getting a look at walnut creek, a look at the headlights and taillights, and it's a clear morning. then as you step out the door, you may want to run back inside and get a heavier jacket. it is only in the low 40s there. we're at 54 in martinez. in palo alto it's dropped down to 38 degrees in much of the north bay, in the upper 30s. we all make a nice recovery with a mild afternoon, headed for 75 in san jose and 73 degrees today in napa. we'll talk about tomorrow's forecast coming up. mike, you were looking at the bay bridge. >> we have our camera spun in the opposite direction. i want to show you around this side of the screen, i just saw these metering lights get activated. hov stays green, but now you see the alternating red and green. they're staggering the on-ramps

to the pay bridge. it was slowing down considerably, the volume, as you lose those lanes. you go down to about half the lanes and less as you head across the bridge. there's a lot of funneling and slowing. there's a roadside fire for eastbound highway 4. westbound highway 4 does show slowing and we're still following police activity on cummings skyway. the on and off-ramp to eastbound 80 are still blocked for police activity. back to you. we're talking multiple crime scenes in different cities across the bay area. a suspect in custody and a bomb squad investigation. >> ginger conejero saab joins us live in san francisco where it started. what do we know so far? >> reporter: marcus, laura, the investigation is still ongoing. but this morning we are getting a better idea of how the chase ended and the investigation surrounding it. new video shows a heavily

armored bomb squad member who is carefully inspecting the suspect's silver car with a blown-out front tire. this happening overnight. the bomb squad team also getting help from a robot which collected evidence from the trunk and car. most of this investigation happening in martinez where the pursuit ended. this all started with a report of an assault in san francisco's north beach neighborhood. people across the city reported a series of small explosions. as police pursued a suspect for the reported assault, on social media, people said they heard explosions at two different locations just after the pursuit started. one at 8th street and mission and another on jones near jackson street. san francisco police have not said much, but they have confirmed the incident started around 6:00 yesterday evening as a call about an assault that turned into a pursuit. police say the suspect threw something out of the car window

as the suspect fled across the city and eventually to martinez. chp took a suspect into custody when the pursuit ended and then put that person into the ambulance. there are still a lot of questions this morning, including what were the suspect's injuries and what was found inside the suspect's car. we will continue to follow this story and bring you updates on air and online at nbcbayarea.com. marcus and laura. >> thank you so much, ginger, for the details there. we're learning new details this morning about a deadly crash in the north bay that, sadly, killed an infant. a 19-year-old driver was arrested on suspicion of driving under the influence after crashing near sea ranch. it happened before 10:30 on saturday on state route 1. the chp says the truck veered off the roadway, drove into a dirt embankment and rolled over. a 1-year-old who was inside the car died.

a 4-year-old was also injured in that crash. the driver, whom chp did not identify, was booked on dui, vehicular manslaughter and child endangerment charges. however, we investigated overnight and jail records show that the chp booked someone on the charges. there are troubling new details coming to light about the man accused of killing 18 people in lewiston, maine, last week. it comes as the community there is still grieving. [ bell tolling ] >> thousands gathered at a church over the weekend paying their suspects and remembering the victims. a bell rang as each victim's name was read aloud. the crowd at yesterday's service was so large, it spilled onto the streets. at the two sites where the gunman opened fire, people have been leaving flowers, balloons, signs and notes. one woman drove 40 minutes from portland just to leave some flowers. >> i just wanted to show some

support for the community up here. i've felt really helpless the past four days, having to watch everything on tv and not feeling like you can help in any way. >> investigators are still processing evidence at the bar and bowling alley where the shootings took place. police found the gunman dead on friday night. his family says his mental health had rapidly declined in recent months and reports indicate police were aware of the threats he recently made. there was a statewide alert made for him weeks before the shooting. 5:36. happening today, we're expected to learn more about the mental evaluation order for the san carlos man accused of beheading his girlfriend with a samurai sword. he has gone through various psychiatric examinations, this is before it was determined that he is mentally fit to go to trial. however, ahead of the jury selection tomorrow, the judge in this case ordered another evaluation to be conducted. police say he killed karina

castro in september of last year. he has pleaded not guilty. the trial is expected to last five to six weeks. happening today, santa clara county nurses will hold rallies for better working conditions. this is all part of a day of action. one rally at st. louise regional hospital in gilroy starts at 9:00. nurses at o'connor hospital in san jose will rally at noon, and valley medical at 3:00 this afternoon. this comes as nurses are currently in contract negotiations with the county. they're asking for better wages, more staff to be hired and improved working conditions. pharmacy staff at walgreens and several other u.s. drugstore chains are planning a nationwide walkout. it's expected to last until wednesday. workers say they have struggled with understaffing, low pay, and increasing work expectations. the walkout could affect hundreds of stores across the country. it's unclear which locations will be impacted. a spokesperson for walgreens

says the company recognizes the incredible work of pharmacists, adding it has taken steps to support its pharmacy teams. commuters will have another way to get from the bay area to monterey. later this morning, vta will unveil the restoration of its bus service between santa clara county and monterey county. it will reconnect passengers with four weekday round trips between the two counties, with the start of bus line 59 running between vt a's gilroy transit center. the event starts at 10:30 this morning at the gilroy transit center. a warning for east bay drivers. we have a live look at the dumbarton bridge this morning. caltrans is closing eastbound highway 84 tonight through friday. the closure starts tonight at 7:00, it will last until 5:00 a.m. every day. crews will be repaving the eastbound lanes of the bridge. for ways you can avoid that closure, we turn to mike inouye.

don't drive overnight across the dumbarton bridge, that's one way. let's be clear, i want people to remember the fact that it's closing at about 7:00 eastbound, getting from the peninsula over toward the fremont area. it reopens by 5:00 a.m., and then they'll do it again, overnights only. the morning commute, everything should be fine. to get around that, you have two options. you go south and take 237 through milpitas and back over to 880. or to the north, you can take the san mateo bridge over there. at those times of day, you should be all right. to be frank, about 7:00 p.m. until 8:30, that's going to be a tougher drive across the san mateo bridge. 237 has been known to get congested, so you will add some time and additional mileage. right now everything is looking great. we're going to move you to the south bay where this section just showed a little slowing for san jose. and a look ahead, vta riders, we have alternate routes and bus bridges in place for the green

and orange line because they're doing maintenance work for a couple of weeks. you'll get a little delay there, not a big deal. as we take a live look outside in oakland this morning, already a busy start to this monday morning. also, very chilly where the temperature is at 44 degrees. we are seeing 30s in spots and it's going to be cold through the next couple of mornings. we're preparing for those colder starts now that the wind is calming down. when you compare right now to yesterday at this time, in santa rosa, it is 18 degrees colder, thanks to the calmer wind and also the clear skies. as we go into today, it's going to be a nice one, warming up to 77 degrees in the north bay, los gatos also headed for 77. 75 in san mateo, livermore reaching 73 degrees, and mid-70s for concord. as we take it into the day tomorrow, expect some low 70s for livermore, but overall very nice, while parts of the south

particularly if it could be used to make a weapon. in congress, senate majority leader chuck schumer held a private forum in september with ai experts, but has yet to introduce significant ai legislation. former vice president mike pence has suspended his presidential campaign. he did so over the weekend. he was polling around 2% in iowa. he was one of just a few republican candidates to criticize trump. trump's lead in every poll really puts his challengers in a pickle. they've got to attract his followers, so criticizing him like pence and christie do, doesn't really work. but praising him the way ramaswamy and nikki haley do doesn't give trump supporters any reason to change their minds. here is trump's response to pence's announcement. >> i don't know about mike pence. he should endorse me. he should endorse me. you know why?

because i had a great, successful presidency, and he was the vice president. he should endorse me. i chose him, made him vice president. but people in politics can be very disloyal. i've never seen anything like it. they asked me a question -- traitor, but he could have done what he could have done. >> the latest nbc poll, you see pence toward the bottom, tim scott just announced he qualified for the third republican debate that marcus was talking about. ron desantis in second place, but actually lost ground since our previous poll last month. now tied with nikki haley, who is on her way up. again, haley's problem, offering some kind of alternative. here she is speaking before jewish leaders in las vegas. >> the abraham accords were historic. i'm happy to give president trump the credit he deserves. [ applause ] >> haley did go on to question about trump would make the proper decisions in the future, but her biggest crowd response was when she praised the former president. now, the judge in trump's felony elections case has reinstated a gag order barring him from comments targeting prosecutors, court staff and witnesses. they did that after trump criticized his former chief of staff, mark meadows, who may turn up as a witness. and lastly, in new york, the attorney general's office there handling the civil case against trump, his sons and his companies, says it will call donald trump jr. to testify wednesday, ivanka friday.

take a look at these temperatures for the south bay, morgan hill headed for 77 degrees, and we'll see a high of 76 in east san jose. after this cold start, it's going to be a very nice day. walnut creek is 74, and 73 in oakland, with a light wind. in half moon bay, upper 60s there, 74 for a high temperature in redwood city, and then for san francisco it's in the upper 60s and low 70s. ingleside, we're going to be about 65 degrees and 77 in santa rosa. looking ahead, there's not a lot going on, except for a couple of weakening storm systems coming in. by the time this next rain chance arrives on thursday, it mostly looks like it's going to be in the north bay, and then for the weekend probably some more widespread rain, especially north of the golden gate bridge from late saturday into sunday. and then we do see that tapering off, with a potential of more rain for early next week. as far as how much rain we're
