through rubble looking for survivors. the director of a nearby hospital says dozens are dead and hundreds injured. nbc news cannot independently confirm those numbers, but we know a unicef spokesperson put it in very stark terms. >> gaza has become a graveyard for children. it's a living hell for everyone else. >> for the latest, let's go tones to chapman bell. what can you tell bus about thi, this morning. >> reporter: good morning, jessica. israel does not dispute this airstrike, saying that a hamas commander who was involved in the october 7 surprise attacks on israel by hamas was killed and that other hamas fighters were also killed in this airstri airstrike in this refugee camp. the hospitals in gaza say dozens

were killed, hundreds injured. this is one of the most densely-populated areas in the world, the gaza strip. and in this area particularly, filled with buildings, apartments and homes for many, and so the idf saying the close proximity of infrastructure and buildings in the area caused many to collapse and that subterranean infrastructure also collapsed. hamas is known for their large network of tunnels under the gaza strip where they move around underground. but what is not in dispute is the growing death toll in this conflict on both sides, as, you know, israeli troops continue to push further into gaza on the ground, supported by tanks and have actually reached this area as well. on, on the ground. they say they are not going to have a cease-fire.

they're going to continue their push and, you know, the one hope is that some of these wounded can leave gaza at the rafah crossing today and more aid can get in, jessica? >> all right, chapman, thank you. >> there is an urgent effort under way to get stranded americans out of gaza this morning. but it's still not clear when or if the rafah crossing in egypt will open for anything but humanitarian aid. our megan fitzgerald reports from rafah. >> reporter: our first-hand look at the rafah border crossing, a lifeline for many suffering and trapped in gaza. more than 200 aid trucks have passed through here, but the u.n. says it's not nearly enough. >> the situation in gaza has become absolutely inhugh mane.

not a killer." now to the battle on capitol hill on aid to israel. the white house is warning that the funding package would get a veto from president biden. chris pollone joins us. why is the white house against the stand-alone israel bill considered in the house? >> reporter: the white house says very bluntly that the house aid bill fails to meet the urgency of the moment. now that house aid bill offered by new speaker mike johnson strips out all non-israel aid and forces cuts to the irs to pay for it. the white house proposal is for $105 billion in aid with about $14 billion going to help israel in its war with hamas, but it also has $60 billion for ukraine and humanitarian aid for palestinians in gaza, money for taiwan and money to help secure the southern border. democrats accuse johnson of playing politics at a pivotal time, and even many senate

walkouts over concerns of harsh working conditions. steven romo has more on the nationwide protest. >> reporter: pharmacy workers fed up are walking off the job again. the protest organizers say the issue is not pay. it's about the growing work load and staffing concerns. sd >> the main job of pharmacists is accurately check prescriptions. now that's almost an afterthought. >> reporter: more than just doelg out medications, protest organizers say workers are asked to administer a growing number of vaccines, deal with insurance companies and spend a lot of time fielding phone calls. this pharmacist worked at large pharmacy chains before moving to ain' an independent pharmacy. >> if you would ask if they'd rather a $5 raise for themselves or an extra technician in their store they would all opt unanimously for another

technician. >> reporter: some customers taking their business to smaller pharmacies. what did you experience that pushed you over the edge to say no more? >> wait time, attitude of the staff. the whole playing with the prescription. >> reporter: he owns the independent pharmacy in pottsville, pennsylvania. they're getting daily calls from large-chain customers asking to transfer prescriptions to them. what do they tell you about the reason they made that switch? >> the obvious reasons? just customer service, like, i guess frustration of the employees there. the long waits. >> reporter: in many cities, options are becoming more limited. large retailers have announced they're closing hundreds of locations, and in rural areas, the number of retail pharmacies has decreased from 2003 to 2021 by more than 14%. researchers at the center for rural health policy analysis say one reason is large chain store pharmacies often drive smaller, independent drugstores out of business, and when the box
