area. >> in the meantime, the director of the fbi is issuing a new warning this morning about security here in the u.s., telling congress the war has, quote, raised the threat of an attack against americans in the united states to a whole other level. we've got it covered starting with nbc's chief correspondent richard engel in the region for us. richard, good morning. >> reporter: good morning, savannah. dozens of injured palestinians are crossing into egypt along with hundreds of foreign passport holders including americans. it is a slow process but nonetheless, a diplomatic breakthrough. ambulances went through the rafah border crossing this morning between gaza and egypt after a long awaited deal to evacuate some sick and injured for treatment. it's being described as a first stage, and that more will follow. it comes as anger is growing after an israeli strike devastated part of a refugee camp on the edge of gaza city in northern gaza. israel said it carried out a

significant strike that killed a senior hamas leader involved in the october 7th massacre of 1,400 israelis. in gaza, they're calling this a massacre, too. amid the anger, cries against the united states, which like israel is rejecting calls for a cease fire, saying it would benefit hamas. a nearby hamas-run hospital says dozens were killed and hundreds wounded. nbc news cannot independently verify those numbers. shortly after the attack, most communications in gaza were shut down. a blackout for the second time in this conflict. israel says it's targeting hamas leaders and that israeli troops are now fighting deep within the gaza strip in street-to-street battles with hamas militants and taking casualties. the israeli military says at least 11 soldiers have been killed so far. prime minister netanyahu this morning saying our soldiers have

fallen in the most just of wars, the war for our home. the fighting is also dangerous for the some 240 israeli hostages including dozens of children taken by hamas and held at least sometimes in hamas' tunnels. one hostage is now back with her family, private ori megidish, rescued by troops. and natalie raanan, back home in in the chicago area. she was freed 12 days ago. along with this ongoing process to get foreign nationals and some injured out of gaza, there's a renewed effort to get aid into the gaza strip. savannah. >> richard engel leading us off. thank you, richard. let's move now to the stark new warning from the head of the fbi saying the escalating war has raised the threat of an attack against americans here at home to, quote, a whole other level. nbc's stephanie gosk joins us with more.

hey, steph, good morning. >> the fbi director says hamas' attack on israel is inspiring the most significant terror threat to the u.s. since the rise of isis nearly a decade ago while also urging all americans to remain vigilant. it comes as the fbi has a suspect in custody in connection with violent threats made online against jews at cornell university. suspect, a student himself. as israel's war against hamas rages on a dire warning from fbi director christopher wray. >> the ongoing war in the middle east has raised the threat of an attack against americans in the united states to a whole other level. >> wray telling the senate homeland committee is the fbi is worried violent extremists will attack americans. >> we assess the actions of

hamas and its allies will serve as an inspiration, the likes of which we haven't seen since isis launched its so called caliphate several years ago. >> reporter: it comes as this morning, the fbi says it has a suspect in custody in connection with violent online threats targeting jewish students at cornell university. according to prosecutors, 21 patrick dai, a junior at the ivy league school is facing federal charges for a series of posts allegedly threatened to kill jewish people at the college and shoot up a campus building. the antidefamation league says it's seen a nearly 400% increase in anti-semitic incidents compared to the same period last year with college students frequently targeted. >> when we are hearing from students who are saying they are being harassed, concerned about being visibly jewish, i think is really concerning. >> reporter: on tuesday, fbi director wray highlighted the alarming surge in anti-semitic hate nationwide. >> this is a threat reaching in some ways toward historic levels.

>> all part as the warning that threats against american jews and muslims are growing, inflamed since the war began, including the killing of a 6-year-old palestinian american boy in illinois, allegedly at the hands of his family's landlord. the fbi arrested a man in houston who was studying how to build bombs and posted online about his support for killing jews. elected officials are facing threats as well. a las vegas man has been charged with threatening to kill jackie rosen who is jewish. his lawyer did not respond to a request for comment. as for the cornell suspect, his first court appearance is set for today. officials at the university say they are grateful to the fbi for, quote, working so swiftly to identify and apprehend him. guys. >> thank you, steph. >> thank you. also this morning, the senate is grappling with a sweeping new funding request from the biden administration to green light billions of dollars in military aid to both israel and ukraine.

nbc's senior capitol hill correspondent, garrett haake, joins us with the details. garrett, we heard from secretary of state blinken, the defense secretary lloyd austin on capitol hill pushing for that package. what did we hear from them, and where are the dividing lines here? >> that's right. they appeared before a senate committee to make their case for the sweeps request for ukraine to aid, to improve border security in the u.s., and despite six interruptions from protesters calling for a cease fire, secretaries austin and blinken made they plea to a divided congress and argued not passing this package would ultimately embolden america's adversaries. >> this is all one fight, and we have to respond in a way that recognizes that. if we start to peel off pieces of this package, they'll see that, they'll understand that we are playing whac-a-mole while they cooperate increasingly and impose an ever greater threat to

our security as well as to that of our partners. >> now most senators include republican later mitch mcconnell support this plan or some version of it. it's house republicans that need persuading. >> thank you, and we will continue to watch. the civil fraud trial against donald trump, his company and two sons. don jr. is scheduled to take the stand today followed by his brother eric and next week their sister, ivanka, and donald trump himself, are expected to testify under oath. we want to turn to nbc's senior legal correspondent, laura jarrett. good morning. here you have the family members and defendants in this case, several of them, coming and taking the witness stand. what do you expect here, and what's the importance of this testimony? >> what's unusual about this is the attorney general who brought the case is calling them to the witness stand in her case in chief. sometimes you see this. it's known as an adverse witness or hostile witness, and she knows they're not going to buy into her story. they think they didn't commit fraud obviously but she wants to put them on the stand so the judge who's deciding this can hear those testimonies, their

side of it and make a credibility determination. >> a criminal trial, a defendant cannot be forced to take the stand. it's a bedrock principle. in a civil trial, a defendant can be forced to testify. >> can be forced to testify and if they decided not to answer a question because they were worried about implicating themselves criminally, that could be used against them as a negative entrance. that would be something to watch. remember all of these people have been deposed before, and there were times the former president has declined to answer things. >> as you mentioned, this is a bench trial. the judge is going to decide everything. point of fact, the judge has decided -- >> the core of the case. >> the trump defendants are liable, and it's a question of what's the penalty going to be. what's the point of the testimony from the attorney general's point of view. >> because there's remaining stragglers about statements, insurance fraud, and also the judge does need to make a determination as to each

defendant. is mr. trump liable himself, should his kids face liability? they're saying they didn't know anything about the false statements on financial statements, perhaps judge could decide some of the defendants are liable, maybe just the company, not the individuals. we'll have to see. >> this is the same judge that the former president that got cross wise with last week, that was forced to the stand because of threats the judge felt trump was making against his law clerk. >> that's what's so unusual about this, the same person that is deciding what the penalty should be, who has the ability to take away his power from his name sake company, he's attacked him repeatedly, which the judge isn't taking issue with. he is finding it problematic for him to go after the law clerk. that's why he has fined him twice for that now. >> we'll be watching. thank you. let's go to southern california. 4,000 people are under evacuation orders this morning due to an out of control wildfire burning in riverside county. the highland fire has grown to nearly 2,500 acres, at least three homes have been destroyed, thousands of others are

at cracking down on illegal sideshows. the announcement is scheduled for 10:00 this morning. "the new york times" reports city attorney david chu will announce lawsuits against websites he claims sell products aimed at obscuring license plates, amazon, walmart, ebay and etsy are all named in the legal action. he says the devices are being used to evade police when the illegal stunts take place. amazon, ebay and etsy say sellers are required to comply with all laws and products found not to comply are pulled. an oakland neighborhood shaken up by a shocking discovery. volunteer clean-up crews yesterday found a body stuffed inside of a suitcase at lake merritt. that suitcase found floating in the water. all we know at this time is that the body is of a man. homicide detectives are on the case searching for more clues about how the man died and what kind of crime may have been committed.

miguel almaguer joins us now with details on this miguel, good morning. >> reporter: craig, good morning. investigators are finding themselves with a lot of time on their hands since bryan kohberger's original trial date got pushed back when he waived his right to a speedy trial. a judge entered a not guilty plea on his behalf in may, and one of his former attorneys says he believes kohberger will be exonerated the doors of 1122 king road have remained closed for months now, its windows covered in plywood after four students living in the home were stabbed to death there almost one year ago. but this week, fbi agents are once again entering the home to get more information as the prosecution prepares for suspect bryan kohberger's long awaited trial. the university of idaho says investigators asked to gather documentation in the home that will help them construct visual and audio exhibits and a physical model of the home >> one of the reasons i think that they're trying to do this is so that they can perfectly

depict to the jurors where each piece of evidence was and why, the placement of that evidence would be considered important. >> reporter: police say they recovered a knife sheathe in the bed in which kaylee goncalves and madison mogen were found dead on the third floor of the home prosecutors allege that kohberger's were a match to the knife sheathe. xana kernodle and ethan chapin, they were found in the home. when she told police she saw a man in black clothes and a mask walk past her. she said she stood in shock as the man walked toward the sliding glass door leading out of the house before locking herself in her bedroom the victims' families fought to keep the house standing until the trial is over. in a statement tuesday, the family of kaylee goncalves and

which is why this seems so unfair >> funny, marta, you're saying that because others who spoke to him said the same thing. he was just playing pickleball, he was on top of his game. what did you think, marta, when you heard the news of his passing? >> i was just in utter shock you know, my first impulse was to text him, honestly. and then deep sadness, so much sadness. it's hard to grasp, you know, one minute he's here and happy and then poof, and doing good in the world. really doing good in the world >> david, he was quoted as saying that people would be shocked about his passing but not surprised. i thought that was a very poignant statement

how did that statement land with you, and how did you feel when you heard the news >> i would say that's probably true, given the journey he'd been on, and we were all aware of it. there was always a part that was kind of bracing for something like this. it is still hard to believe because he was -- he was such a sort of alive person that it's hard to believe he's not here. >> well, i think the collective pain, that was something that i wonder what he would think about in this moment it was like losing a friend, david, for people who didn't even know him. do you think he had any idea the impact that he had on every day people >> i mean, given the response to the show in the last 30 years, i'm sure he did, but at the same time i wonder and even knowing that how much he was able to internalize it and find comfort in it. >> marta, reading his book was -- i know it was shocking to a lot of people who didn't know

him well he wrote that he had spent $7 million attempting to get sober and visited rehab at least 15 times he wrote about surgeries he underwent for his addiction. he was open and honest about this journey how aware were those closest to him about this journey he was on >> very. very aware talked to him about it talked to him about it actually right after the reunion. once he went into treatment, he was open about it. unless he was using. >> you talked about the reunion, marta, and a lot of people, i think, were concerned. many of us hadn't seen him, you know, in a long time until he popped up there on the screen. you were there in the audience while that reunion was happening. were you concerned about him then is this.

>> yes, i was concerned about him. you know, knowing that he'd been through everything he'd been through and every time he had surgery, they're giving him opioids for pain and the cycle starts over again. so, yes, i was concerned about what point in the cycle he was in that moment >> well, the familial aspect of your show has carried on all of these years. i was just looking at the statement from the cast of "friends," it says we are so utterly devastated by the loss of matthew we're more than just cast mates, we're family there's so much to say but now we're going to take a moment to grieve family was right on. matthew said it in so many

words, like when he came in contact with one of you guys or one of the cast of "friends" was like a blood relationship, david. >> oh, absolutely. and, you know, you put six actors together on a show, you don't know what the chemistry is going to be as people, as actors, and from day one, the six of them, it absolutely -- you could tell they were going to be a family, and we all were, and in ten years, you do go through a lot. there's a journey on screen and off screen, and i think when we talk about matthew, we were all very aware that our priority was supporting him. >> marta, you said that at the "friends" reunion, you were concerned, and fast forward to two weeks ago when you spoke to him, it sounded just from listening to you that you were kind of free, care free about him, you felt like he was in a good place did you feel that way? >> i did feel that way i did. he seemed better than i had seen in a while i was so thrilled to see that. he was emotionally in a good place. he looked good he quit smoking. >> do you know if he was sober at that point?

>> yes, he was sober. >> he was sober, he had stopped smoking. he was working out he was at a different -- in a different space. >> yeah, he was. he learned things throughout this, and what he learned more than anything is that he wants to help other addicts. and it gave him purpose. >> one of his last interviews that i saw, he said, i mean, i love the "friends" cast but i don't want that to be the first reason that people remember me, david, he said, i want to be remembered for the person who helps others go down the same path where i am, kind of a path of healing. >> that doesn't surprise me that as important as the show was and continues to be, i think that absolutely became his purpose, his reason for being >> yeah. marta, just lastly, what did you lose the day matthew perry died?

story. that's tomorrow on "today." let's get to your news, 8:00 on wednesday morning. there's a way out of gaza for severely injured palestinians and possibly some americans and other foreign nationals who have been trapped by the war. in the meantime, a massive israeli air strike on a refugee camp is making headlines this morning. nbc's meagan fitzgerald joins us with the latest. good morning. >> reporter: good morning to you. ambulances are already starting to transport some of the injured across the rafah border crossing into egypt where they will receive urgent medical care. four nationals, including americans are being processed right now, and waiting for their opportunity to escape the horror. this morning, the gates of the rafah border crossing are open for the first time to civilians desperate to get out of gaza after a deal brokered with egypt, a first batch of around 500 foreign nationals, including americans, being led across the border, and at least 80 severely injured palestinians are being pushed across the border, and taken by ambulances to be treated at an egyptian hospital

as devastation is growing inside gaza after the deadly strike at a refugee camp. the israeli military saying it killed the ring leader of the october 7th massacre by hamas when over 1,400 israelis were killed. a nearby hamas-run hospital says dozens were killed and hundreds wounded. nbc news can't independently verify those numbers. aid drops are still entering gaza via that southern crossing. even though these trucks with life saving aid are making their way across the border faster, the u.n. warns it's not fast enough to stave off a humanitarian crisis of x proportion. food and water quickly running out, and fuel still not allowed to cross inside. two more hospitals warning they will run out of gas today putting thousands more in jeopardy of dying. a terrifying reality for millions trapped inside with no signs of the war stopping anytime soon. and, savannah, for the second

time in the last five days, gaza has been disconnected from the internet. their means of being able to connect to the world. >> meagan fitzgerald in egypt for us this morning. thank you. we turn to a disturbing story, a commercial pilot indicted for allegedly threatening to shoot the captain during the flight. the altercation between the copilot and the plane's captain came after a disagreement over whether to divert the flight for a passenger's medical event. nbc's tom costello covers aviation for us. what do we know about this? >> reporter: this happened a year ago but the pilot involved has just now been indicted. the department of transportation's inspector general says the pilot who worked for delta air lines and is identified as james dunn allegedly threatened to shoot the captain multiple times if he diverted the plane for a passenger's medical emergency.

dunn is now charged with one count of interfering with a flight crew. the indictment reads he used a deadly weapon in assaulting and intimidating the crew member. the inspector general says dunn was authorized to carry a firearm through the tsa's federal flight deck officer program in the cockpit. the ig does not say which flight was involved or whether the plane did divert for the medical emergency. the tsa says dunn has since been removed from the flight deck officer program. delta says it's refraining from commenting on the matter but will confirm that this first officer is no longer employed at delta. the indictment comes after another recent in-flight altercation. an off duty alaska airlines pilot riding in the cockpit jump seat accused of trying to shut down the engines of the horizon airlines passenger plane. joseph emerson pleaded not guilty in an oregon courtroom to the state charges against him. 83 counts of attempted murder, another 83 for reckless engagement and a federal crime of interfering with a flight crew. he told police he was suffering from a mental health emergency and had consumed psychedelic mushrooms 48 hours before the

everyone else. so when he lost his battle with pancreatic cancer, i reached out to jean, because having lost my husband jay, i really understood what it was like to lose someone you love so much and to actually watch them suffer through this disease. so we just got to be friends, and i just wanted to support her in any way i could and we started talking about alex's legacy, and how we could honor him, and that's when the idea of this fund came about >> i have to think that alex would just love this he was such a learner, into science. >> what does it mean to you to be part of this work in alex's honor, and to matthew and emily, your kids? >> yeah, i think we're really glad to support finding a cure this was something that alex actually would champion. he loved a good challenge.

what are some of the things that you learned about that you're excited about? >> with all cancer, the big area is liquid biopsies, a blood test that can recognize microscopic cells, and can catch it at an early age. it's hard with pancreatic cancer, it doesn't spill a lot of dna into the blood, that's a challenge. also vaccines are really exciting and are educating the immune system to recognize pancreatic cancer and reawakening it to fight the disease. there are a number of vaccines on the horizon, and with ai, i think we're going to be hearing much more about personalized vaccines it's a very exciting time. science takes money, and that's why we're establishing this fund >> jean, you contributed mightily on behalf of alex is there a part of this where when you're able to just put some purpose to the pain that you have been through, was that healing or comforting in any
