election so far, ever since the supreme court overturned roe versus wade. ohio voters also voted on recreational marijuana, becoming the 24th state in the nation to say yes to cannabis. >> let's turn to the candidates who won big last night. brie jackson joins us. there were closely-watched governor races this year. tell us about that. >> reporter: that's right, good morning, frances, phillip. let's start in kentucky. it may be a red state, but democrat andy beshear has won a second term as governor, defeating daniel cameron. beshear used the victory to call for more unity. >> it was a victory that sends a loud, clear message. a message that candidates should run for something and not against someone. and a clear statement that anger politics should end right here and right now. >> reporter: in mississippi,

republican governor tate reeves will also hold onto his job for a second term. reeves was favored to win, but democrat brandon presley gave him a surprisingly tough challenge. now one reason the election was competitive is because of black voters in the state who were very motivated. a jim crow-era measure was recently repealed which required any one running for office to win a majority of the state's districts, not just the popular vote. it was seen as a way of limiting the power of black voters. now for this election that barrier was gone mississippi did run into election day problems, though. a judge extended the voeting hours in one county after turnout was higher than expected and they ran out of ballots. one polling place says they ran out of ballots as early as 9:00 a.m. meanwhile, history was made in philadelphia. democrat cherelle parker has been elected. the city's first female mayor.

gaza strip. but towns across israel and cities have been targeted by some sort of incoming, particularly in the last month when this attack began. but a lot of these of course are shot down by israel's iron dome system and other air defense systems as israeli ground forces search inside gaza city in the heart of gaza city as the idf says, for hamas militants both above and underground in the vast tunnel network underneath the gaza strip. but there is still suffering of civilians in gaza as the u.n. says 70% of people inside the gaza strip have been internally displaced. that's about 1.5 million people with nowhere really to go and very few places to hide, as israeli airstrikes continue, and the civilian population still struggles with these. take a listen to this man who says his family was affected by a strike. >> all my family inside. more than 27 people are inside.
