desantis, safe to say they'll go head to head and first opportunity for nikki haley to set herself apart with her foreign policy. meanwhile, desantis' campaign out with memo calling last night's election as loss for the republicans and he blamed donald trump for that. some of the things you'll see play out as those two go head to head. the other three on stage, tim scott, chris christie and vivek ramaswamy are trying to stay. the face-off begins in just a matter of hours, don't miss the third gop presidential debate tonight at 8:00 p.m. eastern. you can watch it live on your local nbc station. right after the debate, join tom llamas and hallie jackson for

complete analysis starting at 10:00 p.m. eastern. democrats won pretty big last night in some key battle ground states. >> issues like abortion rights took center stage and in ohio voters approved to enshrine it in the constitution. >> nbc news correspondent priscilla thompson joins us from columbus, ohio, as well as gary grum bach in virginia. how are advocates for abortion access. >> reporter: they're thrilled. this is going to protect folks for generations to come and these are the organizers who have been on the ground for months trying to get the word out about this, encouraging people to vote yes on those --

12:08 pm
legalization of recreational marijuana, what's the significance of that? >> reporter: yes, that was another big one, because this is a red state, a conservative state, that's legalizing recreational marijuana and the message from supporters of this measure was pretty simple -- they said this is like alcohol should be treated and regulated like alcohol and they mentioned the 10% tax that would be placed on that recreational marijuana in addition to local and state taxes which means more money for communities here, so something to keep an eye on as we head into 2024 where we'll see the legalization of marijuana on the ballot in a number of red states including florida, nebraska and south dakota, although i should point out that oklahoma voted on a measure on this and decided against it, unclear how those states are going to go in 2024 but definitely something to watch. >> and gary, wayn't to go back
12:09 pm
now to you in virginia, what do the results from last night really tells us about what issues are specifically important to voters there? >> reporter: morgan, it was a total repudiation of everything that governor youngkin said he wants to get done over the next two years, on the economy, eneducation and on that issue of abortion, he wanted a 15-week abortion ban and voters were very clear right back they want to keep things at status quo, he just talked to reporters behind me just a few minutes ago and he was very honest about how it went last night. >> i'm a little disappointed, to be clear, i think the one thing that we know is that abortion's a really difficult topic, that there's a place to come together around a reasonable limit, and i think virginians can come there and that's something that i continue to be committed to work on with our legislature in order to see if we can find.
12:10 pm
