weeks, donald trump jr. is back on a witness stand, he's testifying this time for the defense in new york state's $250 million civil fraud case against his family business empire, attorney general james is accusing the trump organization as well as former president donald trump of inflating the value of the company's business assets. joining me now is vaughn hillyard and here in studio is nbc news now legal analyst. vaughn, what did we hear from donald trump jr. so far today on the stand and how is the testimony different this time than the first time. >> reporter: kate, don junior just left the stand, we expect him to lower these doors at any moment. after 4.5 hours of testimony, this was from direct line of questioning from his own defense lawyer, we should note, really this was the kickoff of the second half of this trial the prosecution rested their case

now the city's asking drivers to avoid that area as firefighters work to clean up the damage. nbc news correspondent liz kreutz is with in l.a. notorious for its traffic, this could make it even worse, any sense of how it's going today and when it might reopen. >> reporter: kate, this is a critical freeway here in l.a., 300,000 people travel on this freeway every single day, so a big impact here and right now, officials say they cannot give a time line on when it's going reopen. it will be closed indefinitely. not something they can reopen in couple of days. what they're doing right now is looking at the structural damage from this fire, they're investigating whether or not they actually might have to demolish the entire two-mile portion of this freeway and then rebuild it spirely or simply repair it, that's what they're doing right now, so we're waiting to get an update from officials.

strike tomorrow that includes campus electrician, elevator mechanics, and plumbers. they're in a contract dispute and calling for higher wages. the only campus not impacted is csu maritime academy. things are expected to change. here's meteorologist kari hall with the chances of rain in our forecast. >> our temperatures today remain comfortable starting out sunny but eventually we'll see more clouds coming in and our highs reach into the mid and upper 60s for today and slightly warmer tomorrow for the interior south bay as well as the east bay as a storm system approaches from the north. here's a look at the storm system now. that will eventually bring us waves of rain and we could see wet weather from tuesday to saturday morning and during that time frame we're looking at some pretty decent rainfall totals. we'll talk more about the timeline of the rain, how our temperatures will respond with all of this cloud cover.

in may, made the surprise announcement on fox news sunday night. scott is the second mayor candidate to leave the race in recent months after former vice president mike pence suspended his campaign two weeks ago. scott said he would not immediately endorse any other candidate. maryann barry the older sister of former president donald trump has died. the eldest of five trump siblings, maryann was appointed to u.s. district court by president reagan in 1983 and then appointed to u.s. court of appeals as a judge by president clinton in 1999. she retired from the bench in 2019. maryann trump barry was 86 years old. it was an emotional victory for the lewiston, maine, high school boys soccer team, took home the state championship title in an emotional 3-2 victory. just over two weeks ago 18 people were killed and 13 more wounded in a mass shooting in lewiston, the team's goalie said

the boys were determined to do it for the city and they wanted to bring home some much needed joy to their community. now to breaking news from washington d.c., for the first time ever, the u.s. supreme court is adopting a code of conduct for all justices, the court has faced growing ethics concerns this year, most notably reports that justice thomas and justice alito failed to disclose trips to conservative donors. nbc news correspondent lawrence hurley joins me now. what's in this code of conduct? >> by the court's own admission, this is basically the court adopting one similar the lower courts follow. so, in a sense not a whole lot new here, try to ward off some of these criticisms they've had because of ethics lapses. how the court will address issues specific to the supreme court, the fact that there are

only nine justices and they have to be careful about stepping aside from cases because there's no one around to replace them. basically, they're adopting, the rules like upholding the integrity of the courts and avoiding impropriety. >> putting it in writing, now, what happens if one of the justices breaks the code of conduct, are there penalties? >> well, that's the big criticism that's coming out on as a result of this announcement. as we have seen before, democrats in congress have been pushing for legislation that would impose a code on justices including in some cases an enforcement mechanism and so, senator sheldon whitehouse a democrat on the senate judiciary committee already issued a statement for not including an enforcement mechanism. and others are saying the same thing. going forward, a big question as

to whether this is going to be enough to deal with this criticism going on. >> lawrence, thank you. an intense situation overnight in washington, d.c. involving the president's granddaughter the secret service said agents tasked with protecting naomi biden opened fire when they saw a group breaking into an unmarked secret service vehicle outside her home in the georgetown neighborhood. ali joins me now. lot of questions here. what do we know about what happened? >> reporter: yeah, kate, secret service said a little bit midnight last night georgetown area of washington, did. c., they were protecting naomi biden outside her apartment building with enthey noticed three people breaking into an unoccupied vehicle. they say the offenders immediately fled the scene and

then secret service issued a be on the lookout order to supporting units. they say at no point was there was a direct threat to naomi biden. as a matter of fact, they don't believe she knew what was going on outside of her apartment at the time and the d.c. metro police department and the secret service are working together to investigate this further as those three people are still at large, kate. >> pretty unusual for the secret service to discharge a weapon, right? >> reporter: yeah, this is an agency that prides themselves on preventing these sort of escalating tensions and escalating violence and preventing any of that from getting worse, so while it's unusual they were actually forced to discharge their weapon they say they respond to these sort of violence with the amount of force that would be require to prevent it from getting worse, but it's important to

note the backdrop that this comes against, a significant uptick in violent crimes here in d.c., in car jackings in particular just in the last year, there have been more than 800 car car jackings reported this the d.c. area. you'll remember this has gotten personal for lawmakers here in washington, d.c. a representative caryakked a few weeks ago, definitely something not just the capitol hill but the white house administration is aware of. kate. >> thank you so much. paul pelosi, the husband of former house speaker nancy pelosi is expected to take the stand as soon as today in the federal trial against david depape, accused of attacking paul lossi with a hammer after

breaking into their san francisco home last year. nbc news correspondent dana griffin joins me now. what are expecting to hear. >> reporter: so far we've heard from officers, fbi agents and data specialists who have presented evidence that david traveled from his home to pelosi home and was caught on camera striking paul pelosi several times with the hammer. when we hear from paul pelosi he's likely to go into detail about things we didn't see on camera. what was going on before police showed up when we saw both men with hands on that hammer. >> dana, talk about the defense's strategy so far in court, how are they trying to defend this man? >> reporter: yeah, so they say

they're not going to refute most of the government's evidence, they're trying to prove that depape shouldn't have been charged with these federal charges, assault on a federal official's family because he didn't go there with the intention of kidnap nancy pelosi. so we will likely see more of that evidence presented. 13 of the 15 government witnesses have testified already, so that leaves paul pelosi and a neurosurgeon which we hope to get this afternoon once court resumes after lunch. the jury could get the case by wednesday and we could have a verdict by friday. >> dana, thank you. in today's daily health, ground-breaking new research shows even more promise for weight loss drugs, a study released this weekend shows an ingredient in the popular medications would reduce the risk of heart attacks and strokes in obese adults with heart disease.

authorities in iceland have issued state of emergency after hundreds of earthquakes shook the country over the weekend, officials there say the earthquakes are a sign that volcanic eruption could come soon. kelly cobiella spoke to residents in iceland about the looming threat. >> reporter: warning signs of a volcanic eruption. thousands of earthquakes in an icelandic fishing community. a mile long pool of lava below the town threatening to erupt. they caught one of the strongest quakes on camera. >> this is straight under the

many complicating factors involved in in this. >> we've been reporting on the united states stepping up its own efforts to get these hostages out. is it possible that the u.s. could be helpful in these negotiations? how would that look? >> well, everyone's leveraging these relationships, the u.s. is reaching out, president biden called qatar to put pressure on them. diplomats are meeting with their counterparts across the region. because there's no direct negotiation, hamas and the israel government won't sit across the table, they're sworn enemies. because there isn't a back-door deal where this can be done simply, it has to be done through third-party cutouts and again, hamas is not holding all these hostages. some hostages are being held by

nurses who are currently in contract negotiations with washington hospital behind me in fremont. some nurses are holding an informational picket to protest what they say are quote unsafe patient care proposals and cuts to healthcare benefits. the nurses say that washington hospital's new proposed contract would tripping their deductibles and out of pocket expenses when it comes to their own healthcare coverage. the nurses also say they are concerned about how the hospital wants to quote, float some of the nurses. floating redirects nurses to units that are short staffed. the union says they have different equipment and would require different skill sets. >> i personally work in the birthing center. it would be dift for someone like me to float to a medicine surge floor because that's not what we do where we work.
