>> thanks so much, kari. >> a quick reminder, you can watch nbc bay area news whenever you like. we're on 24/7 on roku and other streaming platforms. there you can watch live breaking news, news conferences, even repeats of our news casts. right now at 6:00, thousands are heading to d.c. to march for israel, including many from the bay area. we break down the impact amid the intensifying war in the middle east. >> more heavy hitters are set to arrive at san francisco's apec summit, including president biden. the impact already being felt, including perhaps the largest street-related closure that just took effect an hour ago. and a scare in the air. a bomb threat leads to an emergency landing at sfo. we just talked to one passenger about the frightening experience. this is "today in the bay." good morning to you on this tuesday. thank you so much for allowing us to be a part of your morning. i'm marcus washington. >> i'm laura garcia. we'll check the morning commute?
6:01 am
just a bit. there are changes when it comes to our forecast. >> some of us woke up to rain this morning. now it's starting to clear out in the south bay. we are going to see this heading to the north bay with some rounds of rain for the next few hours, and some of it may be a little heavy at times. it has cleared san francisco, it's moving into the east bay and parts of the north bay. but once again, you can see the activity lifting northward where the north bay will continue to see the rain through about 9:00 to 10:00. but the rest of the day it is clearing out and we are headed back to sunshine before we get some more widespread rain in tomorrow's forecast. it does look like tomorrow morning also starts out mostly dry, but some heavier rain, as well as some gusty winds will make its way back to the bay area by tomorrow evening. i'll be tracking that and we'll talk about what to expect as the rain continues off and on through saturday. mike, you've got a couple of crashes on the map. >> i do. i also have some of the highlighting in green, which means maybe slick roadways where the rain came through. the first crash is south 880,
6:02 am
it's in lanes, at least that's the report, but i don't see slowing. more slowing building out of hayward toward the san mateo bridge. we'll track that for the nimitz. on the peninsula, the bayshore freeway jams up as you're approaching sfo. just shy of the exit, there's a crash blocking two left lanes heading northbound. of course there's slowing across the bay bridge. you're down one lane. i'll explain more about apec coming up. >> thank you very much. happening in just a few hours in washington, d.c., hundreds of thousands will visit the mall. >> the message includes concerns over the rise in anti-semitism right here at home. "today in the bay"'s kris sanchez is in our newsroom this morning. this is a call for action and peace. >> it is, and we could see a gathering of up to a quarter of a million people, calling for the release of the jewish hostages in gaza and for an end
6:03 am
to anti-semitic acts here at home and around the world. ahead of that, pro-israel protesters gathered at the federal building in oakland staging a sit-in, calling for cease-fire in the israel-hamas war. several people were arrested by federal police. this protest was organized by the grassroot organization called jewish voice for peace and their position is counter to that of the jewish community relations council, a different organization, which says a cease-fire is not the answer to the escalating situation. more than 250 people remain captives of hamas, including a 3-year-old american little girl. only five hostages have been released since the hamas attack on israel on october 7th. this is a live look at gaza, where israel defense forces are engaging in fierce battles with hamas militants, but many palestinians, as you know, are caught in the middle with nowhere to go. members of the jewish federation
6:04 am
of san francisco will be going to that washington, d.c. rally, and i had a chance to talk with a board member. i asked him how people could reconcile seeing both the horror of what hamas did in israel and what is happening in the palestinian people on the other side. >> i say to people, both jewish, muslim, palestinians, israelis, this is all about finding a path for peace and removing any hurdles on the way. and hamas is a hurdle. regretfully, hamas is using palestinians as a human shield. and that's something that creates suffering across the board. >> reporter: the march for israel is happening in d.c. at 10:00 our time. it could be the single largest rally in support of israel in 35 years. when that happens, we will update you on our social platforms and on nbcbayarea.com

6:07 am
we did just speak with a passenger who was on board the flight. the flight turned around over oregon. he says passengers received an air dropped bomb threat, which forced the emergency landing. about one hour on the tarmac, he spoke with the pilot. >> i kind of asked him what was going on, and he told me that it was a bomb threat. that's kind of what the people on the plane had figured because people were talking about getting air dropped images and stuff. other people had accepted the air drop and it was something along the lines of, i'm going to bomb the plane, or something. so they had gotten the air drop once we were on the air. i had gotten it on the ground. because i didn't accept it, i didn't know what it was. once they made the hostesss aware, we landed the lane. >> the plane landed safely and the passenger tells us he spoke about what happened but never learned anything about any arrests.

chilling testimony from paul pelosi in the trial of the man accused in the violent attack last fall. pelosi took the stand yesterday saying he was scared when he a awoke to find defendant david depape in his bedroom at his san francisco home. he said depape carried a hammer and zip ties and depape told him he would have to tie him up. when police officers arrived, paul pelosi said he felt relieved trying to place his hand on the hammer to hold it down, but that's when depape attacked. the rest of the incident, he says, was mostly a blur. prosecutors may wrap up the case before the end of the week. happening today in vallejo, leaders are expected to vote on a new effort to deter illegal sideshows. it would include spending nearly $1 million for new street construction and altering traffic signage along several city streets. vallejo bans both watching and participating in sideshows. the bay area is bracing for incoming rain this morning.

taking a live look outside, look at the clouds over san jose. crews in the city have been preparing. they've cleared 35,000 storm drains in anticipation of the new storm headed our way. all of the local pumping stations have also been inspected. crews say they've stationed portable backup pumps in flood-prone areas. valley water started installing a flood wall along a 6,000 foot stretch of waterway that is prone to flooding. it's always good to prepare, even around our own homes. >> good to see that because we know how damaging the flooding can be. in the south bay, when are we expecting to see an influx of rain? >> it's mostly going to be tomorrow afternoon for the south bay. we've seen a couple of spotty showers moving through, but it is a good reminder that it is a good idea to make sure you're clearing the gutters and storm drains around your home. the leaves have fallen and so that may clog them a little faster as the rain begins to come down. we are going to see our sky clearing for today, after the showers have lifted into the north bay. and tomorrow we'll see it
6:10 am
becoming more widespread for the afternoon, but it's also going to be windy. some of those gusts may reach 30 miles per hour. ahead, the rain just continues off and on as we head into saturday. it won't be raining the entire time, but there will be some wet weather, and it may get heavy, especially tomorrow evening into friday as well. but you can see the storm system spinning off the coast, that keeps our weather unsettled. we'll talk more about the timeline coming up. mike, how are the gas prices? >> we're going to look at pretty much steady numbers here. that's holding steady for the last few days. in sunnyvale the best is $4.49, the arco on saratoga road. brentwood $4.47 at the mobil on brentwood boulevard. vallejo, $4.49, sinclair on fairgrounds drive. we have seen improvement on gasbuddy.com over the last week. on the roadways, a smooth flow of traffic.

on the peninsula, still this issue. more detail, north 101, two lanes are blocked approaching the sfo exit. 280 is clear. this crash has major damage to one of the vehicles, but minor injuries. we may have this in lanes until about 6:30. we do have one lane blocked in each direction on the bay bridge slowing things down. that's as a result of apec security. meanwhile, the rest of the east bay shows a standard, maybe a lighter build. back to you. >> thank you. bracing for a possible eruption. a suddenly active volcano putting the nation of iceland on high alert. coming up, the latest on the evacuations under way right now. and if uncomfortable shoes make you grimace, mcdonald's has got some good news. let's take you out to the futures. relatively good news about inflation and investors are back in the green. and the return of a turkey day tradition. we give you a first look at some of the new floats at this year's

kari has a look at our forecast and she's tracking the incoming wet weather. >> we had our first wave of light rain that moved through the bay area this morning. it's even clearing out for the north bay. going into the afternoon we're back to the sunshine. we have a little bit more time to prepare for some of the more widespread and gusty winds that we'll see going into the day tomorrow. i do think tomorrow is when we'll really start to measure some rainfall across the bay area, and it's going to be gusty as a little more of that storm starts to come in. it just continues to bring in rain off and on over the next few days, that continues through saturday. so here is a look at what we're seeing right now, some of the showers moving through the center of the storm, still well off the coast. you can see the moisture coming in. we started out early this morning with spotty showers, but it still does come down for parts of the north bay, where we've seen up to a tenth of an inch of rain already. now that we're getting this clearing out, we're headed back to a partly cloudy sky for the afternoon, and we will see a bit

more of a break into tomorrow morning, where the rain, once again, first returns to the north bay and then the rest of the bay area gets much heavier and gusty winds, possibly a few heavy downpours that could bring in thunderstorms by tomorrow afternoon. at 3:00, we're seeing a lot of oranges and even some reds here, with the brunt of the storm hitting us at that time. and then another break early on thursday morning before we get some more widespread rain, once again, into friday. so this is going to be coming in off and on into the next several days, and it does start to taper off by the end of the weekend. some of our models show a little more in the way of some heavier rainfall for parts of the north bay, for marin and sonoma counties we could see 2 to 3 inches of rainfall. and these areas in red are about 1 to 2 inches of rainfall, and many of our valleys won't see nearly that much, but it will be raining off and on. so we're looking at several
