the two leaders meeting face-to-face for the first time after a year of rising tensions between the two countries. brie jackson joins us now from d.c. brie, good morning tmorning. the hope was that this could be a bit of a reset in the relationship. >> reporter: one of the goals of the summit was to simply open the lines of communication again. and the leaders did seem to make progress there. president biden announced that the u.s. and china will re-establish direct contact between our militaries and that china will help take steps to stop the flow of fentanyl into the u.s. the white house readout of the talks says the president expects the two countries to manage competition responsibly, without veering into a conflict or a cold war. and the chinese readout of the meeting says that the world is big enough for both countries to succeed. president biden said these talks were some of the most constructive and productive discussions he's had with president xi.

>> in the months ahead, we're going to continue to preserve and pursue high-level diplomacy to prc in both directions, to keep the lines of communication open between president xi and me. he and i agreed that either one of us could pick up the phone, call directly and wide' be heard immediately. >> reporter: and president biden said we take a trust but verify approach toward china. and when asked if he still considers president xi to be a dictator, here's what he said. >> well, look, he is. i mean, he's a dictator in the sense that he is the guy who one as country that is a communist country that's based on a form of government totally different than ours. >> reporter: and after the summit, president xi host add exclusive dinner for top business execis. tim cook and elon musk are just a couple of the high-profile names who are expected to he show up. >> encouraging news this
