the two leaders meeting face-to-face for the first time after a year of rising tensions between the two countries. brie jackson joins us now from d.c. brie, good morning tmorning. the hope was that this could be a bit of a reset in the relationship. >> reporter: one of the goals of the summit was to simply open the lines of communication again. and the leaders did seem to make progress there. president biden announced that the u.s. and china will re-establish direct contact between our militaries and that china will help take steps to stop the flow of fentanyl into the u.s. the white house readout of the talks says the president expects the two countries to manage competition responsibly, without veering into a conflict or a cold war. and the chinese readout of the meeting says that the world is big enough for both countries to succeed. president biden said these talks were some of the most constructive and productive discussions he's had with president xi.
