center. that's an accusation hamas and hospital workers have repeatedly denied. israel says it is, quote, close to dismantling the military system in northern gaza. it is now urging people in southern gaza to evacuate. it comes as fears of mass starvation grow. the u.n. says it can't deliver food and other supplies because it doesn't have fuel. internet and phone service also down. the palestinian border officials say 17,000 liters of fuel entered gaza today to help restore communication. nbc news foreign correspondent raf sanchez is in tel aviv for us. so far, israeli has not provided evidence of a command center under the hospital. how is the israeli military responding to that? >> reporter: the israeli military argument is that every day, they will have more evidence of what they say is hamas's presence in el shifa hospital, the largest hospital
12:03 pm
in the strip. they rushed out videos in the hours that followed and what they showed was pretty sparse. a standful of assault weapons and grenades and ammunition and hamas literature but not a smoking gun as it wrchl the following day, they released this video of what they say was a hamas tunnel shaft. nbc news is not able to independently verify that that tunnel belongs to hamas. but we can say that ouijao-located the video, and it is indeed on the ground of the al shifa hospital and the israeli military says will is more to come. the criticism from humanitarian organizations, from the world health organization, is about the danger that this israeli military operation is putting the patients at al shiafa hospital in, including the dozens of premature babies out of their incubators because there is no electricity and as well as the people sheltering there. and the consistent message from israel to palestinian civilians

no n-northern gaza, is flee south. it is relatively safe for you in the south. we actually, when we were in gaza earlier this week, is a thousands of palestinian civilians going down one of those so-called humanitarian corridor, but earlier today, in the neighborhood here, the israeli military says even if you're in the south, you're going to be carrying out military operations, and now they are urging people to get out from there, which just underscores there really is no safe area in gaza. tom? >> and raf, you also had exclusive access to israeli intelligence officer, who has been involved with interrogating suspects from the october 7th terror attack. i can't imagine what he has heard so far. what did you learn? >> reporter: yes, just a fascinating interview with sha lone, israeli's equivalent to the fbi, and retired last year and called back into service after october 7th, and i asked him what was it like, to sit across from people involved in that attack. take a listen. >> what's it like to sit like this, with a man who you know
12:05 pm
massacred israeli civilians? >> sometimes you want to kill him with your bare hands but do you nothing, okay? and sometimes, even the opportunity you have to connect, to some dots in his personality. >> and he was involved in the interrogation of around 50 alleged hamas commandos, who were sort of the tip of the hamas sphere during the terror attack on october 7th. it is possible, tom, that a deal to free the hostages may involve releasing those very same hamas suspects that he interrogated. he said that would be painful for him and with officers, he would understand if that was the price of bring can the hostages, too. >> raf sanchez, thank you for that. you can see raf's exclusive reporting tonight on nbc nightly news with lester holt. back here at home, the federal government is trying to

help college campuses beef up security. it comes at a time when many jewish muslim students say they don't feel safe. some of the students we spoke to say they're not only dealing with threats from their peers, but now from complete strangers. nbc's homeland security correspondent julia ainsley joins me now. julia, you spoke with some of those students at the university of connecticut. what kind of threats are they dealing with? >> reporter: well, they've seen the threats run the gamut, jewish students say they have seen flyers on the campus calling the attacks on october 7th in israel justified this. see that as a threat of violence that could ultimately turn against them. also the muslim students have received email that have been threaten, and a very threatening voice mail, one former student head of the students for palestine, received a voice mail earlier this month. she played it for me and we had a conversation. take a listen. >> you are supporting baby killers, people who rape grandmas, i can't wait to see you dead. how. >> how did you feel? >> it makes me wonder what else
12:07 pm
are they capable of doing, if they're going out of their way to get your number. >> reporter: it is pretty troubling, i talked to lina for a while there, the spokes person from the muslim association and the jewish association, to help work on security to help keep them safe because they say they need the extra security. u-conn administrators say they are investigating the voice mail as well as another message. while thee are condemning anti-semitism and islamophobia, the students say they need for the demonstration to come out, call out the actions and mack sure everyone knows about them and try to have an open dialogue to educate and bring people together but right now it is a place that the administration is going. >> thank you, julia. the social media discussion with the war is taking an
12:08 pm
additional new turn. a decades old propaganda written by osama bin laden, the late al qaeda leader was behind the deadliest terror attack in american history, later called by navy seals. he wrote his so-called letter to america after the 9/11 attack, it called out u.s. policy towards the palestinian people, and israel, and fuels multiple anti-semitic and homophobic stereotypes. tiktok says it has banned the letter to america, and our team has been able to find videos on tiktok. let's bring in correspondent jake ward. i don't know if we know yet or anyone knows the answer to this question, but how did this letter start to pop up and go viral, sort of out of nowhere? >> reporter: well, anyone who had an idle interest in the content of let clear have found it in the course of the past two decades on the website of the guardian. that was the place it was most prominently feature and readily available for anyone looking into history at that time, but
12:09 pm
something about the palestinian and israeli situation has set off a new interest in it, and a journalist earlier this week posted a compilation of a few videos that had been popping up on tiktok of young people describing the specific portion of that letter that deals with the palestinian situation, and blames american taxpayers for their government's actions around the world. it does not, however, tend to include the more horrible parts of that letter that call for the genocide of civilians, and casts homophobic and anti-semitic sentiment. so since tuesday, we've seen about a 4,300% increase in references to bin laden on x, formerly known as twitter, and a 400% increase on youtube, when it comes to searches for that. millions, tens of millions, maybe even hundreds of millions of views on tiktok have result the. but as you mentioned, the hash tag letter to america has been taken down by that platform at this hour, tom. >> and jake, can you talk about how the algorithm works, right,
12:10 pm
on tiktok? because it works differently here than it does in china. but something like this can go viral sort of easily. >> reporter: yes, it absolutely does. i mean here in the united states, tiktok, like all of the major platforms, is looking for ways and things you are interested in and the idle searching i have done for the words bin laden on tiktok have yielded all sorts of videos ever since. they're just coming through my feed. and now, tiktok, youtube, instagram, they all have very clear policies about not promoting or encouraging any sort of terrorism-related content. and this falls squarely in the middle of that, but it is also a feature of tiktok that you could comment on other people's videos. so even videos now that criticize the outpouring of support for bin laden's sentiment have resurfaced the original videos, even those, even though those have been taken down. so at this point as with all things social media, tom, once a thing gets going, it is very hard to stop. >> jake, you monitor this stuff for us, so you would know better than i would, but is this one of
12:11 pm
the, the first time, a mu trend that we're seeing, that tiktok is actually launching trends on other platforms? i mean that stat you put up of youtube and x taking off on it is, tiktok sort of leading the charge now? >> reporter: well, it certainly is leading the charge among young people, right? it is the preferred source of news for people 18 to 25. a huge proportion, a plurality of young people say they get their news off of that. so at this point, we know that once something takes hold and gets into this sort of political moment, when people are really talking things through on tiktok, that tends to lead the zeitgeists across social media, tom. >> as you know the media can purport to a trend setter, but not exactly like this. jake ward, we appreciate your report can. the cnbc money minute, california could see energy bill goes up and apple is making a big change to iphone messages. bertha coombs joins us now. great to see you. >> tom, you too. >> start with california, the utility company that serves more than 16 million people in the
