if you're flying, make sure you leave early to the airport, because, of course, you're not going to be alone. the tsa expecting a record number of passengers in the nation's airports over the next 11 days. >> and weather, of course, may be an issue as well. we are going to get angie's forecast in just a moment. let's begin with nbc's george solis at new york's laguardia airport. good morning to you. >> reporter: good morning. as you can see, already many are getting a head start on their holiday travel days before thanksgiving. here, people slowly starting to trickle in. we saw lines forming this morning and we expect that to ramp up in the couple of days. it's expected to move fairly seamlessly because according to the tsa, there's about 17 million people now signed up for pre-check, about 4 million more than this time last year. fortunately, at least so far today, we're only looking at a handful of cancellations, but the busiest times to fly are yet

to come. not surprising, the tuesday and wednesday before thanksgiving, the tsa expecting to screen about 2.5 million. the sunday after, a whopping 2.9 million people expected to be screened. hopefully they'll be well fed by that point. back on the ground, aaa says a lot of drivers will have company. an estimated 49 million or so expected on the roadways. some good news, gas prices expected to be a lot cheaper, about 40 cents a gallon cheaper, even cheaper down south where the national average hovering around $3.32 a gallon. make no mistake, it is still going to be crowded. best times to avoid the roadways, wednesday between 2:00 and 6:00 p.m., midday around thanksgiving, and starting on noon the friday after. but no matter your mode of transportation, the key advice here, give yourself plenty of time. other good news for travelers, something they're thankful for, airfare and rental cars are dramatically down from what they were this time last year, making it a little easier on the wallet

as we try to rush home to be around the dining room table this holiday. >> that's what everyone wants. thanks so much, appreciate it. everybody trying to figure out what the weather is going to look like. we want to get to meteorologist angie lassman with the latest. you're not just hosting the holiday, you're hosting all of us with your forecast. what's it going to look like? >> i don't want to disappoint with my meal or forecast. let's talk about real quick what's happening today. if you're getting an early head start, california is going to be the spot, especially northern california that will pick up on a little rain. nothing too impressive. as we get into sunday and then especially monday, we start to see another system, a low pressure system merging out of colorado. this is going to be kind of the troublemaker for the extended period. sunday to monday we'll see the storm intensify. it does bring stronger storms from texas and toward the gulf coast. we'll watch for that to be impactful. look at this heavy rain that spreads across the east coast as we get to tuesday. strong winds will develop, gusty conditions from the midwest to

northeast, we'll see a wintery mix working in as well. the good news is this starts to exit by the time we get into wednesday, gearing up for a very busy travel day. but the winds stick around and so does the lake effect snow across parts of the great lakes. you'll have to watch near syracuse, cleveland and parts of michigan. as we get to the broad view, look at this heavy rain. this will make the roads difficult, we'll see the snow make the roads slick, potentially causing airport delays across the country. >> angie, thank you very much. to the mid east now, where there are conflicting reports this morning about what exactly is happening inside gaza's main hospital, as the israeli military carries out a search for hamas militants inside. nbc's erin mclaughlin is in tel aviv with more on this. what's the latest? >> reporter: good morning. as you mentioned, there are conflicting reports of what exactly transpired at the al shifa hospital this morning. we have been unable to reach any

medical personnel inside the hospital complex. according to the hamas controlled palestinian health ministry this morning, the israeli military ordered the evacuation of the hospital, and a number of civilians and sick patients left the hospital on foot. but a number of critically ill patients remain inside the hospital. the israeli military, though, is denying that it evacuated the hospital. it says that it provided a safe corridor at the request of the hospital's director, and that it will medically evacuate any remaining patients. now, for days now, the israeli military has surrounded the hospital. yesterday i spoke to the director of the hospital's burns unit, and he described just this desperate situation. he said that patients were dying due to a lack of essentials, including oxygen. this as the israeli military continues to search the hospital complex looking for any signs of what it alleges is a hamas

terror cell that it says was operating deep beneath the complex itself, so far presenting evidence of a tunnel, as well as weapons that it says it found on hospital grounds. but nothing definitive so far. >> and i know there's also word that the israeli military is shifting its operations from the north to the south in gaza. what more do you know about that? >> reporter: yeah, the israeli military says it's looking to increase pressure on hamas, today a number of leaflets were dropped south of the the wadi gaza, and there are also reports of air strikes south of the wadi gaza, which is where tens of thousands of palestinians have been told to evacuate. palestinians there say they have nowhere else to go, guys. >> erin, thank you so much. there is new fallout this morning for social media giant x, formerly known as twitter, and owner elon musk, after musk

endorsed anti-semitic rhetoric on his platform. several major companies are now pulling their advertising, and the white house is issuing its own strong condemnation as well. nbc's aaron gilchrist is traveling with the president in delaware this morning. good morning. >> reporter: good morning, peter. the white house, the latest to weigh in on the growing controversy here, issuing a strong rebuke to the post by elon musk. musk replied to another user on x, who posted an often repeated conspiracy theory saying that jews promote a hatred of white people. musk then replying, you have said the actual truth. that generated millions of views on the platform. a white house spokesperson responding, saying, we condemn the promotion of anti-semitic and racist hate in the strongest terms, and that we have a responsibility to bring people together against hate. now, responses from the business world have been really swift, with major companies suspending their ads on x. we're talking about apple,

disney, paramount, ibm, warner bros. and comcast, which is the parent company of nbc news. overnight musk writing that x corp. will be filing a thermo nuclear lawsuit in response to the fallout saying it's an attempt to undermine free speech. this obviously generating headlines with incidents of anti-semitism and islamophobia on the rise in the u.s. and online. >> it's not the first time that elon musk has made offensive comments. in the meantime, president biden just wrapped up that crucial asia-pacific economic cooperation summit in san francisco, including a meeting with mexico's president. of course fentanyl and the border were key topics during that discussion. >> reporter: yeah, senior administration official says they covered multiple topics, including their meetings with chinese president xi, climate and trade agreements. really their main focus was the crisis at the u.s./mexico border. president biden and president obrador talked about how to

deter undocumented migration, but also about expanding legal pathways to come into the u.s. the leaders also talked about u.s. and mexican law enforcement working together to fight human trafficking and the drug trade, including the flow of fentanyl, as you mentioned, a topic that president biden also discussed with president xi. >> aaron gilchrist traveling with president biden, thank you very much. >> a big week there as well. now to embattled republican new york congressman george santos, accused of embezzling campaign money for lavish spending. the republican chair introduced a resolution on friday to expel santos from congress. nbc's capitol hill correspondent julie tsirkin has more on that. >> reporter: this morning representative george santos' colleagues are inching closer to kicking him out of the house, that's after the gop chair of the ethics committee began the process friday to expel the new york republican only hours after a bipartisan panel found sprawling evidence of santos'

illegal and unethical behavior. they laid out findings in a 56-page report, alleging he committed business fraud and spent hundreds of thousands in campaign cash on personal expenses like bills, credit card dent and rent and he paid for botox and spent thousands on vacations. the panel also said he used campaign donor funds on only fans, a platform known for explicit content. >> julie, this isn't the first time his colleagues have tried to kick him out, though. what's the likelihood this is actually going to happen this time? >> reporter: exactly. lawmakers removing one of their own is extremely rare. of the five times it happened, three were during the civil war. previously republicans claimed santos deserved due process, but after reading this damning report, more than a dozen said they would vote to oust him. it would take two-thirds of the house or 290 members to make it

happen. if democrats support the move, they would need 77 republicans to join. any vote on santos won't happen until after thanksgiving. if a vote to expel him is successful or if santos resigns, a special election in the competitive district would take place less than three months later. santos, meanwhile, called the report a, quote, dirty, biased act. but after all, decided against running for re-election. >> julie tsirkin in washington, thank you, as always. let's turn to the tragic news from overnight. sadly, a fan in the crowd at a taylor swift concert in brazil died on friday. joe fryer is here with the latest on that. joe, you could see taylor swift was really moved by the situation to try to do everything that she could there. >> most definitely. good morning. we actually got the news from taylor swift herself. she took to instagram late last night, writing, it is with a shattered heart that i say we lost a fan earlier tonight before my show. i can't even tell you how devastated i am by this. she went on to say, there's very little information i have, other than the fact that she was so

incredibly beautiful and far too young, adding, i want to say now i feel this loss deeply, and my broken heart goes out to her family and friends. now, we don't know exactly what happened, but we do know temperatures in rio were around 100 degrees last night, so it was clearly very hot inside the stadium. taylor stopped the show more than once to make sure fans were able to get water. >> we just need to get water to them. does anyone have water? do you see them? amazing. >> during at least one other point in the show, taylor was seen asking for water and tossing a bottle to fans below. just last week swift had to postpone a show for a couple of days because of weather conditions, in that case intense rain. she does have two more shows scheduled for rio, and at this point those are still happening.

>> what a terrible story. >> thank you very much. now to this, a music mogul sean "diddy" combs has quickly settled that disturbing lawsuit alleging he abused his ex-girlfriend. the settlement was announced late last night. it came just one day after the singer cassie accused him of years of sexual and physical abuse. combs has denied those allegations. their on again and off again relationship began in 2007 when ventura was 19 years old and combs was 37. the terms of this deal were not disclosed. just months after he was convicted of killing his wife and son, alec murdaugh was back in court on friday. he pleaded guilty to a series of financial crimes there. nbc's blayne alexander has the latest. >> reporter: donning an orange juchl jumpsuit, alex murdaugh, the once prominent attorney turned convicted murderer was back in court, this time pleading guilty to a slew of financial crimes. >> i plead guilty, your honor

progress prosecutors say he defrauded clients out of millions of dollars. >> do you believe you've had enough time to think about it? >> yes, sir, i do. a long time to think about it. >> reporter: murdaugh is serving two life sentences for the murder of his wife and adult son. at the time, prosecutors said he killed them to distract from his financial crimes. >> he cares for these victims and he feels badly about it. >> reporter: in a statement, attorneys for the financial victims say the plea will allow them to begin the process of healing, adding justice was served in this case. murdaugh has been in prison since his march conviction. in an exclusive interview on "dateline," craig spoke to the investigators who helped put him there. recalling that now infamous recording that put murdaugh at the scene of the crime. >> i listened to it three to four times to make sure i was hearing, because i was in disbelief at the time. i immediately got on the phone

pushed out co-founder sam altman after a review found he was not candid in conversations with the board of supervisors. the company did not provide any other details. altman has become the face of the ai boom, speaking out on the promise, as well as the potential dangers of artificial intelligence. also this morning, some crushing news for cincinnati bengals fans and their playoff hopes. the team announced friday that star quarterback joe burrow will miss the rest of the season. he tore a ligament in his wrist during thursday's game against the baltimore ravens and it will likely require surgery. the 26-year-old led the bengals to the 2022 super bowl, and last season's afc title. there's also a controversy that's shaking up the nfl this morning, after fox sports and amazon host clarissa thompson said on a podcast that she made up sideline reports earlier in her career. now thompson is apologizing for those comments. nbc's dana griffin is in los angeles with more. there was a lot of outrage after this. >> reporter: oh, yeah.

good morning. thompson originally said that she would make up reports if coaches didn't talk to her, but now with her credibility called into question, thompson is walking back those comments and trying to clear the air. >> i asked about his team's emergency -- >> reporter: fox sports broadcaster under fire for admitting on a podcast she would occasionally make up sideline reports. >> i would make up the reports sometimes because, a, the coach wouldn't come out at halftime, or it was too late and i didn't want to screw up the report. so i was, like, i'm just going to make this up. first of all, no coach is going to get mad if i say, hey, we need to stop hurting ourselves, we need to be better on third down, and do a better job of getting off the field. they're not going to correct me on that. it's fine, i'll just make up the report. >> reporter: the viral clip met with criticism from other prominent reporters, calling the comments deplorable and a mockery. under pressure, thompson

apologizing, saying in part, i chose the wrong words. i have never lied about anything or been unethical during my time as a sports broadcaster, adding, i would use information that i learned and saw during the first half to create my report. in these instances, i never attributed anything i said to a player or coach. but listen to this admission from january 2022 on a podcast with fellow broadcaster erin andrews. >> coach, what adjustments are you going to make at halftime. he goes, that's a great perfume you're wearing. oh, [ bleep ], this isn't going to work. all right, i've got to make up a report. i'm not kidding, i made up a report. >> i've done that, too, for a coach that i didn't want to throw under the bus. >> reporter: a spokesperson for andrews said in part, the reporter was referring to taking information from head coach meetings, adding, she is clear in her reporting. amazon, the nfl and fox sports have not commented, but media experts say thompson's words have damaged an entire

profession. >> when you have one reporter, a pretty famous sideline reporter admitting to making things up, it brings into question the entire media, and so a lot of people who already distrust the media will say, see, even they admit they make things up. >> reporter: so on that podcast, thompson also said that she has great respect for sideline reporters, because of the amount of prep that goes into collecting information each week ahead of a game. but added that the return on investment from all that work is also why she's no longer a sideline reporter. >> thank you so much. >> it's just such a shame, because obviously it's a male-dominated field, and so the comments, i feel like it just sort of undermine for everybody all the hard work that so many women have tried to be trailblazers, and it's just a shame. >> it's an incredible amount of work, every single week. the amount of research they do, unreal. >> i will say i've been so impressed by the sideline

reporters, the women and men i've met. they know everything about the game inside and out, the game plans as well. that's just an anomaly, i think, those comments. we're back with a check of the forecast. >> i know a couple of things about the weather, and one of them i'm going to share with you is the temperatures we're dealing with across the middle of the country. if you're looking for a little warmth on this november day, low 50s in minneapolis, running above normal, 55 degrees for the high in chicago today, upper 60s for oklahoma city. into tomorrow, we're going to run above normal, low 60s for st. louis. look what happens by the time we get into later portions of the next seven days. monday, tuesday, wednesday, we see a big difference in temperatures. monday in minneapolis, mid-40s. by wednesday, we're into the 30s, just in time for holiday festivities, upper 40s for milwaukee on monday, and then mid-30s by wednesday. across the country, though, today, there will be plenty of sunshine. even though it will be chilly in a couple of spots, like the great lakes, we're going to see

peter. many rocketing to get a head start on their thanksgiving travel, just days before the holiday. and those that are traveling, the millions are expected to have a good time at the nation's airports says about 17 million or so are already signed up for pre-check, about 4 million more than this time last year. here at laguardia airport, we are seeing masses starting to show up and we're expecting to see more of that in the coming days. the busiest times to fly though, still to come. not surprising, the tuesday and wednesday before thanksgiving, some 2.5 million expected to be screened. the sunday after thanksgiving, a whopping 2.9, presumably well fed passengers. if you're heading out on the roadways, expect to have company. aaa predicting some 49 million will be packing up the car. the national average for gas, about 40 cents cheaper than this time last year with the national average hovering around $3.32 a gallon. it will still be crowded. times to avoid, anywhere between 2:00 and 6:00 on wednesday, any time around midday on thursday,

the starship needs to separate from the bottom portion called the super heavy booster, and this is where things went wrong last time. but we hope to see that separation happen today. they've made some changes, and so the expectation is that the engines on the starship are actually going to start up a little early to help it separate from the booster. the booster is going to fall into the gulf of mexico here, and then that starship is going to continue on into a partial flight around the earth. it will be about 90 minutes and the starship will ultimately land in the pacific ocean near hawaii. as you may remember back in april that is not what happened when the first launch occurred. the separation never happened, and as a result, they had to detonate the entire thing about four minutes into the flight, bringing the whole thing down. but elon musk called that a very exciting moment. he said that they learned a lot of lessons as a result of that, and so they are testing out the

more than 60 changes that were made as a result of recommendations by the faa, and they are hoping that it all goes well today. and as you recall mentioned, strongest, most powerful rocket ever built, and this un-crewed mission is important, because they do hope to put astronauts on it. it sounds like that separation may be occurring. they are hoping to put astronauts on it as part of the moon mission with nasa. >> you can only time these things so much. that one worked and a successful mission, it sounds like, from all of those cheers. congratulations to all. very, very cool. that was the news. we don't always get a spaceship launch on a saturday. >> it appears to be successful. we have the boost, but i think it will pale in comparison to the 39 raptor engines we just watched. you might remember earlier
