very important. a lot of people coming and going. >> yeah, it's going to be a nice week. we don't have any issues there. we are also still dealing with gusty winds behind that system that moved through over the weekend, but we don't have any major issues we're tracking as a result. the good thing is that there's no fire danger or anything like that because we did have quite a bit of rain over the weekend. but we are going to be watching for potentially power and tree impacts. overall, the wind is starting to calm down. we are tracking wind gusts in parts of the north bay at about 20 to 30 miles per hour in these areas in purple. that's where the winds are higher. for much of the bay area, winds are at about 10, 15 miles per hour, and calming down as we go throughout the day. as you step out the door, it is chilly. we're at 44 in oakland and 49 in dublin. light winds and the winds will, once again, continue to relax going into this afternoon. mike, you're seeing the bay bridge toll plaza filling up. >> it's filled up.
6:02 am
i thought this week was going to be a lot lighter, and it actually is. but the bay bridge will almost always be busy like this. the last couple of days, this time of morning, we're looking at the approach coming in. there is another issue in oakland. this is at the transition just off of 580 heading onto 980. there was an earlier crash and car fire. the car fire was after the initial crash. we hear there are no major injuries. no slowing there. there is slowing highway 37, highway 4. the rest of the bay moves very smoothly. back to you. >> thank you very much. 6:01. breaking overnight, the chp is looking for two separate drivers involved in a crash which resulted in the death of a passenger who was just looking for help in oakland. >> "today in the bay"'s kris sanchez is joining us from the newsroom to give us details. really a bizarre sequence of events here. >> reporter: good morning, marcus and laura. the person who died was involved in two separate crashes and wasn't even the person behind the wheel. this is what the chp told us. the victim was a passenger in a

also 68 tomorrow in novato. we'll be talking more about that. mike, you were saying that as of now it seems pretty smooth. >> yeah, the bay bridge itself, the toll plaza is starting to move better now. and we do see those speed sensors improving across the span. i believe they did clear that disabled vehicle. we're able to see some recovery because it is a lighter volume overall. earlier this morning it looked heavy. this week we're talking about a lighter flow of traffic. we have slowing in the tri-valley and toward the san mateo bridge. 880 slows toward the dumbarton bridge and across 92. westbound, a lot more slowing over the last ten minutes. still moving through the peninsula, which is clear right now. alameda county and contra costa county, vasco road is 27 minutes. just under a half hour. in san jose, a little build here.

good monday morning to you. as we take a look at our planner for gilroy, we're starting out in the low 40s this morning. it's a chilly start. but with the sunshine, it's going to be a mild day. making it into the mid-60s, but then cooling down quickly for the evening. we'll see more days like this. we'll talk about any changes in our thanksgiving microclimate forecast coming up. and we're looking at the golden gate bridge, the volume builds a bit coming out of the north bay. on the north side of the bridge, the rest stop has cleared. all security zones have cleared safely and there's better movement, also lighter traffic overall. we'll show you where there are slow spots. >> thank you so much. 6:46 right now. more housing help is coming for those who need it most in the south bay. last month, leaders approved a transitional housing development on a small lot near san ignacio. the developer is donating the site to the city for $1 a year

over the next five years. the nonprofit dignity moves will initially construct 75 sleeping units on the site at a cost of about $50,000 per unit. organizers say the new community will provide shared laundry machines and kitchen areas and provide a more stable alternative than shelters with large rooms and bunk beds. >> interim supportive housing is a place where people can come for six months to maybe as long as two years where they can get stabilized and assess what their long-term plans are going to be. so it's not a permanent solution, it's an interim place where people can be, instead of being on the streets, and get stabilized hopefully, rather than the permanent supportive housing, which is in short supply and expensive to build. >> work on the development is expected to wrap in about half a year, even with donations from the developer and nonprofit, the project will cost the city around $11 million.

6:37 right now. today is president biden's birthday. >> and scott mcgrew he'll be celebrating, but for his critics it's time to point out his age again. >> he's 81, the oldest president of the united states. to be fair, he was the oldest president yesterday, too, when he was 80. the president's public schedule shows he has a turkey pardon today on his birthday. the turkeys are named liberty and bell. earlier this weekend, the president and first lady and some turkeys who were not so lucky got together for dinner in norfolk with members of the u.s. military. nbc news polling shows former president trump ahead of biden in a nationwide survey, right here within the margin of error, these two numbers. but worrisome for the biden campaign. when we show these nationwide polls, i remind all of us, this is not how we elect a president. it's not a popularity contest.
6:49 am
maybe more worrisome for mr. biden is this other number, an approval rating for people under 34 years old. this is low. many young people upset over the president's strong support of israel. young people telling pollsters they want the white house to be more even-handed in the conflict. the white house has been calling for pauses in the fight between israel and the hamas terrorists to protect the palestinians that everyone is very much worried about. now, it's not as if those voters will turn to trump over that issue. trump equally supportive of israel. i'm sure he would say the most supportive of israel. where the two candidates mostly disagree as far as funding and military is ukraine. brand new pictures into our newsroom of the secretary of state lloyd austin meeting with president zelenskyy in kyiv. president biden pushing congress for more funding to defend ukraine, trump has called for a pause in funding. he says he would solve the war

within the first 24 hours of being president. it sounds as if the deal to release some of the hostages snatched by hamas terrorists is close, and some of those hostages are americans. senator richard blumenthal speaking on our "meet the press" saying as much as he could. >> what gives you confidence that americans are likely involved? >> i have a high degree of confidence that americans will be involved. there are nine of them, and a green card holder, perhaps more. but americans' involvement will be an imperative, i think for the president, rightly so. >> and of course everyone in washington and america are saying good-bye to rosalynn carter, who passed away over the weekend. i had the pleasure of meeting her at her church in plains. she was 96 when she died. we'll have much more ahead on the "today" show, and then the funeral, marcus and laura, will be a week from wednesday. >> thank you very much, scott. 6:50 right now. trending this morning, if you're

still trying to figure out what kind of holiday gift to get the person who has everything, here is an idea. maybe their own island. >> i think it's a great deal. so red rock island is located in san francisco bay just south of the richmond-san rafael bridge. the listing agent tells the "chronicle," there's no wi-fi, no parking, and it's only accessible by boat. but you don't have neighbors, if that's your thing. and it's expected to hit the market this week at the cost of $25 million. viewing is by appointment only. >> you've got to take a boat out there. >> i have stayed at apartments that had no wi-fi. >> just go back to the '80s, right? >> something for everyone. >> meet the flintstones. it's windy across the bay area, and we're going to see the winds calming down. the wind advisory will expire in

a few hours, but it's mainly for the hills and mountains. some of those gusts reaching up to 45 miles per hour. that's after the storm system we had over the weekend has now moved off to the east. we have high pressure moving in, and there's another storm system out in the pacific. so the pressure gradient, all of the high and low pressure so close together is making that air flow very quickly across the bay area. but here is a look at some of our top wind gusts for some of our mountains. we saw mount st. helen reaching 47 yesterday evening, up to 52 at mount tam. once the wind calms down, the sunshine continues, and we're going to see highs reaching into the mid to upper 60s today, a little warmer tomorrow with highs in the low 70s and mid to upper 70s for morgan hill down to san martin. we're also going to see more mild weather continue into our thanksgiving holiday. just watching out for a quick pass of north bay showers early

thursday morning. we go back to some dry conditions the rest of the week, and our temperatures will be slightly cooler after thanksgiving, but we're not seeing any rain chances in our extended forecast beyond the slight chance we'll see between late wednesday night into early thursday. it looks good for the next several days. mike, you continue to see improvement on the bay bridge. >> moving much more quickly now that the disabled vehicle cleared across the span. holding steady on the eastshore freeway. no major backups outside of your typical commute spots. a build for 101, 87 and 105, and slow across the san mateo bridge. but overall lighter. back to you. >> thank you very much. 6:53. teams are searching for a missing northern california hiker, a 66-year-old, a michigan-based travel nurse last seen eight days ago in calaveras county. they disappeared along the popular arnold rim trail. searchers have been looking for
