today may be your last chance to avoid heavy traffic. tomorrow and wednesday, the busiest days between 4:00 and 5:00 p.m. we're watching a major storm that's going to snag travel, as well. al has the full forecast coming up. let's start with the tributes pouring in for rosalynn carter. she was 96 years old. had just entered hospice care at home on friday after a lifetime of devoting herself to social causes, including advocates for mental health issues and the needs of elderly people. blayne alexander has more on her life and her legacy and her long marriage. good morning. >> reporter: savannah, good morning to you. the former first lady was 96 years old when she died yesterday afternoon, surrounded by her family and those who loved her dearly. she had just entered hospice care on friday after being diagnosed with dementia earlier this year. now, her love story with the former president was one for the

ages. this year, this morning, she is being remembered as a fierce humanitarian with a beautiful, caring spirit. from the georgia governor's mansion to the white house, to her years of global humanitarian work, former first lady rosalynn carter dedicated her life to public service and to her beloved husband, former president jimmy carter, all while blazing trails in her own right. this morning the former president is remembering his wife and best friend of 80 years. rosalynn was my equal partner in everything i ever accomplished. she gave me wise guidance and encouragement when i needed it. as long as rosalynn was in the world, i always knew somebody loved and supported me. now tributes are pouring in from every corner of the globe. the president and first lady writing, rosalynn did so much to address many of society's greatest needs. we always felt her hope, warmth and optimism. >> it is my pleasure to

introduce someone who i love and respect and cherish, my wife rosalynn. >> reporter: the carters' storied marriage stretched 77 years, longer than any other first couple in history. born in plains, georgia, she grew up next door to the future president who was three years her senior. >> he graduated from high school at 16. i was 13. he was way beyond my reach. >> reporter: they married in 1946 and became life partners in everything, from the peanut farms in georgia all the way to the white house where she was influential on the campaign to get there. >> people got to know him, and when they know him, they vote for him. >> she's completely objective and unbiassed. >> i love politics. >> reporter: mrs. carter would often attend cabinet meetings and became the first first lady to hold an office in the east wing. >> i talked to him about what is happening, and i give him advice, and he doesn't always

follow it. >> reporter: she used her position to champion her own causes, a fierce advocate for mental health and better care for the elderly. the carters continued that work when they left the house, founding the carter center more than 40 years ago. and in 1999, they were each awarded the presidential medal of freedom. >> i think that's one of the happiest times of my life. there is life after the white house. >> they certainly demonstrated that. what are the plans for the funeral service for her? >> reporter: well, savannah, we're looking at three days of tributes for the former first lady here in atlanta at the carter center and stretching all the way down to plains, georgia. the public is invited to come out, share their support and tributes during these three days. >> a life well lived. blayne alexander, thank you. lets turn to the war between israel and hamas negotiators are closing in on a deal to release some of the hostages taken during the october 7th terrorist attack

nbc's chief international correspondent keir simmons as the latest from tel aviv now good morning. >> reporter: hoda, good morning to you we're getting news of more intense fighting around another hospital in northern gaza. meanwhile, the families of the hostages will meet with prime minister netanyahu and his war cabinet tonight. it is only the third time that's happened those hostages have been missing for 45 days. hope possibly this morning for some of the more than 200 hostages taken by hamas. with many desperate families demonstrating in israel this weekend, sources familiar with the negotiations confirm to nbc news the talks mediated by the u.s. and qatar are on the brink of a breakthrough. >> we are closer than we have been in quite some time. >> reporter: nothing is final yet, and those talks have fallen apart before and this weekend, israel under pressure to justify the assault on the al-shifa hostages two hostages at the hospital on

october 7th. >> with the gunman, terrorists inside the hospital. >> reporter: this morning hamas admitting it took hostages to hospitals for treatment, it says one is dragged along a hall. israel says this is a hamas hidden staircase about a 55 meter, 180-foot tunnel with cables and a blast door. nbc news cannot independently verify israel's description of the footage. the hospital harbored a hamas command facility israel says it was an extensive headquarters this morning 31 premature babies from al-shifa have been evacuated to a hospital in southern gaza. some did not survive israel's offensive unrelenting dozens were killed at a school

this weekend overnight, another hospital hit with 12 killed says the hamas run girls and health ministry. we meet this man who just got news his sister-in-law and nephew were killed in southern gaza they're slaughtering us, he says he's terrified for his two-year-old daughter and two months old baby. while in israel, it is 45 days since his daughters, 8 and 15, were abducted. their father killed. if israel, can't get them back, she'll go to gaza herself, she says. >> i just want to -- to -- to hug my daughters, to take them in my hand >> reporter: and if there is a deal, it is not clear how many hostages are being released or how long a pause would be. but officials have told us over a number of weeks that it would likely be a number of hostages and then perhaps some more over

the race to beat the horde of holiday travelers is on. from the road to the skies more than 55 million people are expected to be on the move between wednesday and the sunday after thanksgiving that's the third highest forecast for the holiday since 2000 already, early bird travelers are taking flight. >> we hope that we can get out early and just be patient is the biggest thing. >> experts say the flexible work schedules are allowing many to work from their thanksgiving destination and leave earlier. >> we're both allowed to work from home this week. we just thought it would be easier to travel today instead of tuesday or wednesday. >> reporter: the tsa says tomorrow will be one of the three busiest travel days of the week, only topped by thanksgiving eve and sunday with 2.9 million passengers will rush to return home. >> tsa officials and others are projecting this thanksgiving is the busiest thanksgiving holiday

in years expect the airports themselves to be quite full you know, it is one of the busiest travel periods of the entire year. >> reporter: for those looking to hit the road this holiday, turkey day traffic is expected to be at its worst tuesday and wednesday between 2:00 and 5:00 p.m. according to data analyzed by google maps the best time to start your drive today or tomorrow at 8:00 p.m. meanwhile, drivers are thankful for some relief at the pump. the national average for gas prices is now $3.31 a gallon that's almost 40 cents less than last year. >> i was paying close to $36 now i'm paying $24 or something like that, so it is a big change. >> reporter: but road warriors beware a storm system moving east is threatening to delay travel as high winds and rain could impact cities like new orleans, atlanta and philadelphia potentially turning pre-thanksgiving travel into a traffic jammed trek. and according to tsa, they

actually have a record number of passengers signed up for pre-check this year. some 17.5 million. that is 4 million more than last year when you are at airports and you see the tsa pre-check lines longer than regular security, do not panic. it will still be significantly faster savannah, there is also a my tsa app to see how long the wait time will be before you leave the door of your house. >> sounds like good advice, sam. thank you. a lot of people are wondering about the weather. what's it going to be like for travel and thanksgiving. for that, we turn to mr. roker. >> good morning. and good morning to you. we have a bit of a mess going on first of all, this is our main concern right now. 10 million people at risk for severe weather quarter sized hail, strong tornadoes possible this is really the area we're most concerned about last time we had a system this strong, this kind of warning, was back in mid-may, so we will be watching this closely pockets of heavy rain from the gulf to the great lakes. rain fall rates of 1 to 2 inches per hour airport impacts -- denver for snow and wind chicago going to be some delays.

dallas, houston, all delays because of strong winds and thunderstorms. i-40, i-55 going to be looking at major problems because of the thunderstorms. tomorrow it shifts to the west bringing with it snow, heavy rain along the corridor. detroit, chicago, st. louis, dallas because of wind, washington, d.c., raleigh all the way down to atlanta, that will be a big problem. and i-77, i-80, i-40 looking at heavy rain and blustery conditions it moves offshore upwards of 10 inches of snow up through maine. airport delays basically the i-95 corridor. boston to washington and delays as far south as atlanta. as far as the roads are concerned. not too bad. it will be rainy into i-95 into rain, it will be a real mess. the next 72 hours, guys, will be a big problem. once everybody gets there, thursday, looking okay well, we got some news about

off. soon after a passenger got out of the zip car, only to be struck and killed by a separate car. that driver also took off. the incident closed all lanes for more than an hour. anyone with information should contact the chp. and here is a live look this morning at sfo and oakland airports. each bracing this week for a surge in holiday travelers. aaa forecasts close to 5 million people will fly this week, nearly 7% increase over last year. the highest number since 2005. the surge is being tied to lower airfares and fewer covid concerns. experts say the busiest travel days will be tomorrow and wednesday. wednesday will be the worst day for road travel. let's get a look at that forecast as we start out our thanksgiving holiday week. >> yeah, it's a good thing that we have a lot of people that are going to see family and we don't have any major storms coming our way. our weather stays quiet throughout the week and there will be a few more clouds between tomorrow and wednesday.

israel has released security footage from the hospital said to show two of the hostages being brought there on the day they were kidnapped. another video was said to know a hamas tunnel at al-shifa we turn now to a mysterious dog illness that's spreading in the united states. it starts with a cough and can lead to severe pneumonia and even death liz joins us with more on the outbreak and how to protect your pet. liz, good morning. this is scary for a lot of folks. >> it really is. across the country sounding this alarm about this unusual illness causing a lot of dogs to become sick so far the typical treatments don't seem to be working with pets heading to kennels throughout the holidays, experts fear it will get worse this morning a highly contagious and potentially deadly illness is spreading among dogs.

>> we're seeing a plethora of these infections and it's concerning >> reporter: the mystery respiratory disease starts with a cough that can last for several weeks. in some cases, dogs develop pneumonia, which can progress quickly and become severe in as little as 24 to 36 hours other common symptoms include sneezing, nasal or eye discharge and fatigue. so far, it is unknown what causes the illness and it's largely been found to be unresponsive to antibiotics. >> we're not finding just one bug causing all of these dogs to be sick. >> reporter: more than 200 cases reported in oregon and other states throughout the country. in some cases, dogs have died. although, it is unclear how many at one denver area hospital, vets have seen a spike in cases now up to three a day. some dogs become so sick that they need to be put on oxygen. >> we are using our isolation ward heavily with all of these infections.

>> as researchers continue to investigate what's behind the unusual illness, vets are now encouraging dog owners to exercise caution. >> where we're seeing these cases come from in our hospital are from dogs that have been at boarding facilities or at doggy day care with the holidays coming up, people being more inclined to board their dogs as they go on vacation and see family, i am worried about it getting much more. >> reporter: experts say to avoid boarding your dog if you are traveling this holiday season and consider asking someone to dog sit instead. make sure your dog is up-to-date on vaccinations, especially those that protect against respiratory illnesses. watch your dog closely and head to the vet if you notice any symptoms and if possible, keep your vets at home and avoid settings where they may come in contact with other dogs, including the dog park or the groomer. and the oregon department of agriculture is working with state and federal health

over the years are grown now and cancer free, so we wanted to celebrate them and the amazing work of all the doctors and nurses at st. jude kristen dahlgren has more. >> they go, i do this for you. >> this is rap star nick london. >> reporter: you may remember him as a st. jude patient we first met back in 2016. >> i feel my role to recovery would have been a lot harder. >> reporter: a rising basketball star, he was diagnosed with acute lymphoblastic leukemia when st. jude opened in 1962, the survival rate for a.l.l. was 4% now it's 94% now it's 94% ♪ >> reporter: today a successful rapper, helping us celebrate more than 20 years in thanks and giving an idea marlo thomas and her siblings first came up with in 2004 thomas's nephew jason thomas gordon hosted a concert for some of the patients profiled in "today."

the grandson of st. jude founder danny thomas, thomas gordon learned from a young age about the amazing hospital where no child is ever turned away for the inability to pay. >> cancer was a death sentence for children in the '50s so for him to go, i don't care this isn't good enough i'm going to make this place a reality, i just wish my grandfather were here to see it. he would be amazed by how far we've come. >> reporter: rebecca robinson simpson was one of the first patients we ever interviewed diagnosed at 15 months old with neuroblastoma, a related autoimmune disorder took away her ability to walk. >> it was hard to believe that we were going to make it through that. >> reporter: but with the advancements in research being done at st. jude, survival rates increased from 51% to 74% from the last two decades and last year, rebecca who at

give thanks. >> my name is aspen, and i'm a st. jude patient thank you, st. jude, for helping me survive >> thank you, st. jude >> reporter: for "today," kristen dahlgren, nbc news memphis. wow. marlo thomas is the national outreach director for st. jude marlo, i mean, seeing the faces is incredible. seeing the numbers and the statistics is just jarring to realize the survival rates now on this show, i think we featured about 118 children. and the survival rate is obviously improved tremendously. i mean, is there a place down the road where you say to yourself, we could actually be better than we're doing right now. >> you know what's interesting i was talking to one of your producers that 16 of those 118 children passed away now, that is a really great statistic. but it's still 16 children gone.

>> yeah. >> so what we're really working on is the incurable diseases now. our statistics are great in many diseases, but there are incurables so at st. jude, more than anywhere in the world, we're investing in the science that is going to push through those diseases that cannot be cured. the incurables. >> research is such a huge part of what you do as well as care for patients and you have a global outreach. >> right you know, approximately, i think it is 400,000 children a year will get cancer around the world. and half of them will die without treatment or even knowing they have cancer and what we have done right now, which i think you will love, we have invested $300 million in our st. jude global alliance, and we're sending to doctors in

80 countries to help them work together to treat these children and our goal is that at the end of this decade, we will have improved the six most common forms of pediatric cancer from 30% worldwide to 60% by the end of the decade. and that's what we could do with the science. you know, people don't understand that there is the word research in st. jude children's research hospital and my father used to always say, we don't fix scratched knees here what we are doing is creating research in our labs, and the doctors are then trying it on the children in the hospital and that's a very unusual function and dynamic because most places you are doing the research somewhere in one state and you are trying them on clinics in another state and you don't have that collaboration. >> i mean, seeing the research is incredible. but watching those people, those young kids grow up into these beautiful grown-ups is great it is amazing. >> isn't it great?
