now. today, wednesday, november 22nd, breaking news vehicle explosion on the border. the fbi investigating a car explosion on the united states border with canada, two people confirmed dead. we'll have the latest details. freed from hamas, we're just hours away from first hostages being released from gaza. what we know about who will be released including how many americans are among them. getaway day the weather is wreaking havoc on one of the busiest travel days of the year. and tech turmoil. sam altman now back as the ceo at the company leading the a.i. revolution. thanks so much for being with us on this busy day. breaking news. >> we start with breaking news at the u.s.-canada border, authorities investigating the explosion of a car at the rainbow bridge, a vehicle, in
12:02 pm
niagara falls. >> we got reports of an explosion at the bridge which connects the united states and canada. >> we believe it happened earlier this morning, four law enforcements telling nbc news there are two deaths as a result of that the explosion apparently happened at a security checkpoint, a vehicle crashing into it at a high rate of speed. let's go to nbc news correspondent kathy park. and we also have frank figluzzi with us. >> reporter: kate, you mentioned the vehicle was traveling into the u.s. on the rainbow bridge and niagara falls traveling at very high rate of spoed and eventually hit the checkpoint structure. exploded. right now officials are reporting two people inside that vehicle are now confirmed dead, also a cbp officer was injured
12:03 pm
because of the blast, after initial search, they didn't find a secondary explosive device and still unclear whether this was intentional or not, still a lot of questions on that front. meanwhile, security has been heightened throughout that area especially in erie county, all western bridge crossings between the u.s. and canada have been closed. also some county buildings in that area closing early out of an abundance of caution. security at buffalo international airport, a very busy travel day, we also learned they're heightening security there, they're making sure that all the cars going into the airport undergo security checks, but we know according to the tsa nationwide they're monitoring the situation, but they have not changed their posture as to what heir doing at other airports across the country. i'm sure a lot of folks are
12:04 pm
concerned and possibly worried, you know, bas on what they're seeing happening here in new york, but we had a chance to hear from witnesses on on the ground who saw the explosion. take a listen. >> we were walking up the road and we'd seen this vehicle coming down toward the border, he was flying, over 100 miles per hour, he swerved out, went in front car, hit the fence, up into the air, an elevation, he went up into the air. a fireball. i have never seen anything like this. the fire was so high up in the air. >> reporter: once again, heightened security but also a lot of movement as far as law enforcement goes, fbi is on the scene right now, they're also bringing in reinforcement, the governor of new york she's in en route to buffalo to meet with law enforcement there. >> kathy, we've heard from new
12:05 pm
york-area lawmakers as well as canada's justin trudeau who called this is a very situation. i want to bring in frank figliuzzi. it's the day before thanksgiving, the israel-hamas war, we don't want to speculate about a motive, what law enforcement officials telling you? >> yes, we have more questions than answers right now. but there's enough here to actually have an intelligent discussion about this and most of it is coming from nbc news sources. sources are reporting that for now there appears not have been evidence of explosives in this vehicle, eyewitness accounts say the fire, the explosion happened after the vehicle crashed into
12:06 pm
the customs facility. why is that important? because it makes a little bit less likely that this was a vehicle borne ied, improvised explosive device that was designed to detonate in some kind of planned attack versus a car accident that caused a fire and then perhaps a gas tank explosion. that's where we're at right now, all of this could change as further forensics and examination is done, but i'll also rule out that as you said, the times we're living in, where seemingly days ago the director -- fbi director wray testified on the hill to a very increased concern and threat environment over what he called inspired acts of terrorism based on the hamas-israel war going on. and his concern that lone actors or small cells could act out without really being on the
12:07 pm
radar screen for law enforcement. that's why you're seeing all the response the fbi response, the closure of borders because we simply haven't figured out whether this is an inspired act or a tragic accident that occurred. we know right now that police telling nbc news sources no evidence of explosive ins this vehicle and we know two people who occuied the car are deceased. one cbp officer has minor injuries at the scene. as a result we'll have to figure this out. the good news is, i think this will be fairly figured out very quickly. i.d. out of that vehicle. there will be some closure and it won't take weeks, it might take hours or day.
12:08 pm
>> let me bring in ken dilanian. ken, i know the president's being briefed, the attorney general has been briefed, what are you hearing from -- you have so many sources -- what are you hearing from federal officials? >> reporter: that's right, kate the u.s. government the canadian government, state and local authorities are taking this very, very seriously for exactly the reasons that frank mentioned, the heightened state of threat and the suspicious nature of this incident so as frank said, our reporting was this wasn't a car bomb, an important conclusion, because initially this seemed pretty bad, big explosion, what hasn't been determined whether this was an intentional attack that's exactly my law enforcement sources is being thoroughly investigated right now and they're taking it, again, extremely seriously and they're very cautious.
12:09 pm
they're investigating whether this was an intentional attack. we're starting to get witness accounts of the behavior of the driver and it seems hard to believe that it could have been an accident. but stranger things have happened. lot of bizarre accidents have happened. incidents of people using vehicles to kill americans in terror attacks, so both things are possible, both things are being investigated. >> frank, notably you said you're hopeful this might be resolved not in weeks or months but hours, what 's the process right now between federal and local law enforcement? >> because this is involving a border crossing because we have cbp officer injured, the assumption nowadays that this is terrorism until it's ruled out as not terrorism you'll see the fbi take the investigative lead. they'll work closely with their canadian partners, by the way.
12:10 pm
the fbi buffalo field office does work with the canadians every day and there's an fbi presence in the u.s. embassy in ottawa, so it's all there. and they're going to be tracing the car and the people in the car back as quickly as possible. latest information that tom winter reported was that the vehicle through video appears to been on on the american side of border, there may be deliberate turned backward, turning around toward the you u.s. inspection facility, if that's accurate, i realize it's early, that makes things even more mysterious, if you're already across the border you're not intending to cross the border you're on the u.s. side and you make a beeline at high speed for this inspection building that seems quite odd and this could be someone who's

an lone or two lone actors who are inspired by the middle east situation. >> frank, stand by for me. do we still have ken dilanian with us? ken, i want to put this to you, i think that may have been guidance but not a firm thing we know, do we know what side of the border the vehicle was coming from. >> what was frank is talking about what the video shows once it was inside the checkpoint and potential turn the driver might have been taken. >> we'll ask our control room to get us that video as fast as they can. we're joined by senior white

house correspondent kelly o'donnell, of course the president has been briefed or is being briefed, what is the white house saying about all this? >> reporter: well, this has been a day where there's a lot of moving parts on the president's plate, he's spoken to the prime minister of israel and qatar relating to the hostage deal to free 50 hostages. he's dealing with that. now at the same time he's also been brought up to speed by white house officials on this incident, the attorney general has been briefed the transportation secretary has been briefed and at this point, information is coming in from federal and state officials through the white house mechanism to brief the president on what this situation looks like at this point. of course we're here on nantucket where the president is spending the holiday with family and so forth. wherever he goes and travels he's got his senior team of advisers who can brief him on international and domestic
