>> earlier than ever this year. >> yeah, sheinelle and craig are back inside studio 1a. they've got the news covered for us hey, guys. >> happy thanksgiving, ladies. >> you guys look great. >> you too this is just about perfect parade weather it's sunny, it's beautiful here in new york city big question, is it going to stay that way? will the weather hold out for those iconic character balloons can fly? there's only one person who knows that answer. >> who's that? >> al roker. >> some years it's super windy and the parades don't get to fly. al is on the parade route upper west side of manhattan at the starting point al, what say you >> oh, i say, yay, let's have a parade there's an eagle scouts snoopy back there, and we've got great weather for you. let's take a look, show you what the parade forecast is right now. we've got a temperature that's somewhere around 50 degrees. 48, 50 degrees right now it's 45. a windchill of 40, but that's not going to be bad. the winds are light most importantly, and by the time

tradition. as you can imagine, this is a huge undertaking for the nypd as well police officers already out in force. yesterday there was a brief scare at the u.s./canada border and that put them on alert we're going to speak with the nypd commissioner in just a moment first, nbc's emilie ikeda joins us with more on that border crash. good morning. >> reporter: good morning to you. the deadly crash led to a cascade of security concerns, both here in the u.s. and in canada, but overnight, the fbi confirming this does not appear to be a case of terrorism. still, here in new york city, the security is tight as tens of thousands of people -- you can see them behind me -- pack the city streets to take in the macy's thanksgiving day parade >> oh, my goodness. >> reporter: this morning authorities are investigating a major scare at the u.s./canadian border where surveillance cameras captured a speeding white car go airborne before crashing into a check point structure at the rainbow bridge

and exploding in a fire ball according to law enforcement the fiery crash in western new york leaving witnesses stunned >> he was flying over 100 miles an hour. >> reporter: the incident killed two people inside the car according to law enforcement and caused a cascade of security concerns, briefly pausing international flights at the buffalo airport and closing several border crossings on one of the busiest travel days of the year overnight, the fbi turned the investigation over to local police as a traffic investigation citing no explosive materials or terrorism links. >> there's no evidence at this time that this was a terrorist activity that's what i want to make very clear to the public. >> reporter: still, the explosion rattling some with the country under a heightened alert amidst ongoing violence in the middle east. but officials are reassuring visitors set to attend new york city's macy's thanksgiving day parade. >> the nypd partners have already enhanced security.

>> reporter: the nypd will be out in full force along the entire 2.5 mile parade route. >> it's one of my favorite times of the year. >> reporter: crowds lining the streets wednesday to get an up-close and early glimpse of the magic. the inflation of the stars of the show -- 16 towering character balloons >> while balloons being inflated little kiddos going bluey, blue india have >> three and a half hours of nonstop entertainment, spectacles. >> reporter: new york isn't the only place ramping up security for the holiday. cities like houston, chicago, and detroit are keeping a watchful eye on massive thanksgiving parades of their own. back in new york, the mayor with this message >> we will do our job. your job is to have as much fun as possible. >> federal and local law enforcement have been preparing for this event all year. officers will be out in full force, both seen and unseen. now, what will be on full display, the seven new balloons taking flight including a five

we want to thank macy's, our partners, for making it a terrific event. >> the reason it's safe is because you guys are here lining the parade route so tell me about the preps that went into that, and what you're looking out for today. >> so the preparation starts the day after last event ends. we work with our federal, state, and local partners to make sure everything is safe and i want to thank the 50,000 men and women, uniformed and civilians, of the new york city police department that work tirelessly to make sure we are safe. >> tell us about that. we always know this is a high security, high-profile event obviously there are world events causing a lot of unrest. is there a heightened threat this year, or do you have any sense of that? or is it business as usual >> right now there are no specific or credible threats to new york city or the parade in general. the new york city police department has been on heightened alert since october 7th. like we said, there's a lot of things that you will see, like officers on the parade route a lot of things new york city will not see that goes on behind

the scenes >> you do such a good job of balancing the security, but really this parade is about fun, thanksgiving and how do you spend your thanksgiving, commissioner >> well, i'm going to spend my thanksgiving here, march with everyone else, every other family after that i'm going to go to a couple of pantries, help serve food and do my part. >> we'll be looking for the nypd band, always wonderful in the parade every year. thank you so much, commissioner. >> we appreciate it. >> nice to have you with us. >> thank you, on behalf of the new york city police department, happy thanksgiving. >> happy thanksgiving to you >> craig and shi knell, back to you with the rest of the day's news we do now turn to that war, the latest on the war between israel and hamas overnight israel announcing the planned hostage deal with hamas is delayed until at least friday nbc's raf sanchez is in tel aviv for us once again this morning with the very latest raf, good morning. >> reporter: craig, good morning. we were expecting to see the first hostages emerging out of

gaza right now a last-minute snag means they're going to have to endure at least one more day of captivity. the white house is stressing this is just a delay and that the agreement still holds. this morning the guns in gaza were supposed to be silent instead, the fighting continues, and so does the agonizing wait for the families of the hostages. >> nobody knows exactly who's included in the deal yet. >> reporter: both hamas and israeli officials had said a deal would start this morning, but overnight, israel announcing a delay. the white house saying it's down to final logistical details, and it now hopes the deal will go into effect on friday. >> this is my granddaughter. >> reporter: seven members of gilad's family were kidnapped, including his 3-year-old granddaughter, who he hoped might be free by now. if you could speak to your family now, what would you tell them? >> that i promise that i'd do

anything to release them. >> reporter: israel issuing guidelines for dealing with child hostages after their release, telling soldiers not to immediately answer questions about families, heartbreakingly relevant for 3-year-old american abigail moore idan who may not know both her parents were murdered by hamas. she turns 4 years old on friday. as fighting rages in gaza, israel still under pressure to justify its raid on al shifa hospital. the military revealing more of the tunnels under the hospital, which they say were operated by hamas. >> uses the hospital as a human shield. >> reporter: bathrooms off the tunnel shaft. it comes as gaza residents also wait for a pause in strikes, but any cease-fire will come too late for more than 5,000 palestinian children killed so far according to the red crescent. and it's unlikely displaced people will be able to return to their homes in gaza city, but for palestinian families, the prospect of some quiet, even if

only for a few days. and for the hostages, hope for freedom after six endless weeks in darkness. >> so, raf, i mean, it does sound like from a logistical standpoint there is still a lot up in the air, but what could we expect from the hand-overs if they do, in fact, start tomorrow? >> reporter: well, craig, a senior u.s. official tells nbc news the two sides are still negotiating the final logistics of that hostage handover, but we do expect to see those women and children passed from hamas to the red cross, then to israel's military, and israel's prime minister is saying the red cross for the first time is going to get access to those hostages who are still remaining in captivity. craig. >> we certainly hope so, raf, happy thanksgiving to you, stay safe, my friend. thank you. today could be the eye of the thanksgiving travel storm. this could end up being a record setting week at airports and on the road, and the weekend journey back home might be even busier. nbc's maggie vespa is in chicago this morning with the very latest.

maggie, good morning. >> reporter: good morning. happy thanksgiving. not a ton of traffic in chicago on the highways. hopefully that means everybody got where they needed to go last night with little draw that. that being said, when you gear up to go back home, officials are issuing a reminder to get ready for what could be the busiest travel day of the entire season. >> reporter: with tens of millions of americans on the move for thanksgiving, traffic jams, airport lines, and packed rest stops are testing travelers' patience. >> this is the biggest i've ever seen in 20 years of travel. >> reporter: in the northeast, many anxious families watched the wicked weather and their flight connections. >> reporter: we're hoping we get out tonight, but we'll see. >> reporter: more than 55 million americans are expected to travel at least 50 miles from home over the holiday according to aaa. >> it's just a lot. a lot of people, a lot of just -- it's just chaos.

>> reporter: in cities like new york, los angeles, and charlotte just getting to the airport was half the battle. >> we literally took an hour to go a quarter of a mile. >> it's been busy, i tell you, it's been like three or four wrecks. >> reporter: but there's good news too. less pain at the pump, with drivers paying $0.35 per gallon >> last call for amtrak northeast. >> reporter: for a lower stress option, amtrak says ride its rails. the record-setting travel all leading up to sunday, which the tsa says could be the busiest day this week with nearly 3 million passengers at airports nationwide. >> i'm thinking i'm not going to make it back sunday night probably. >> reporter: long-time travelers say a positive outlook can go a long way. >> just say, hey, we're all here for the same thing, and i just wish us all, like, safe travel. >> reporter: that's a good attitude to have. this is always good news on a holiday. yesterday we had just a few

morning. we're moving you forward with a look at top stories today. volunteers preparing meals to feed thousands of people at glide memorial in san francisco.

an annual tradition. first time it's back and indoors since 2019. organizers say 1200 pounds of turkey, 1900 pounds of ham, will make up 2400 meals expected to be served. the dining room reopened in july of this year, but the biggest celebration is seen post pandemic. one of many nonprofits hoping those in need. at 8:30 this morning the 19th annual applied materials silicon valley turkey trot in the south bay. this year organizers are expecting more than 20,000 runners and walkers in downtown san jose. there is a 5k, a 10k, fun run, all the proceeds from the race stay in the bay area and help foundations like second harvest, healthier kids and health trust. in the nearly two decades of this turkey trot, organizers have raised more than $11 million for bay area charities. >> let's check in with kari this morning. >> we have great weather for the runners out there or for whatever you have planned.

rehearsing, ready, spirit of america is going to have 1,200 dancers, so get ready for that that's at the end. the rockettes, special performance for the first time in the parade. >> when we were doing the read-through, they were talking about the feeling that a lot of the organizers get when they get to call a band, call a high school band and say you've been chosen or tell a broadway show, you're performing on broadway but you're also performing in front of millions of people. that must be such a thrill, all the preparation that goes into this parade. >> so many of the performers have never been in new york city before this is their opportunity to show their wares here in front of america. >> it's macy's, after all, we know we have thanksgiving and then we have black friday. what do you expect this year you're a businessman how's it looking >> it's looking great. we're open online. any shopper that wants to come in if you want to go to a store, bloomingdale's, 6:00 a.m. we open tomorrow. we have got gifts for anybody on your gift list it's in beauty, apparel, home store.
