7th. what we know about the hostages expected to be freed soon. black friday 2023 under way, with some thieves in the east bay starting early. the store now boarded up and the investigation under way. and the holiday season in high gear in san jose. the enchanting event that begins tonight. this is "today in the bay." good morning, everyone. i'm scott mcgrew. >> and i'm kira klapper. laura and marcus are off this morning. we hope you had a happy thanksgiving. we all just discussed ours. great way to start our morning today, this black friday. let's start with a look at your forecast as you're heading out to maybe go stand in line. >> i know. i saw the great mall, the lines will begin at 6:00 a.m., okay, so if you're up with us getting ready and you're going to go out shopping, it is cold out there. it's also windy. we've had high wind gusts

kicking up in parts of the north bay and the delta, and even in the next hour we're still going to see winds at times up to 25 to possibly 30 miles an hour. it did get very gusty yesterday afternoon into the evening, and then into the day it's going to be a little breezy. but at least we will have sunshine. we're going to start out with temperatures in the mid-40s, and we're at 44 degrees in oakland, 57 degrees in san francisco, and you can see the wind there coming in at 20 miles per hour, and we're headed for the low to mid-60s today. cinthia, you heard about a tree coming down and blocking lanes in the north bay? it might be because of high winds, near sonoma and the outskirts of town, east napa street between 7th and 8th, the tree came down and some of the lanes are blocked. you can see it going into the valleys. just be careful if you do have to head out in that direction this morning.

another place we're chp is advising of potentially strong winds is the bay bridge. and the altamont pass, if you are going in either direction, just make sure you're holding onto the wheel extra tight. we have a couple of crashes in the east bay early this morning. we're start with san leandro, southbound 280 at 238. the tow truck has been called and we'll keep an eye on that. it is the moment people across the globe have been waiting for, and it is expected to happen in less than an hour from now, israeli hostages set to be released in exchange for palestinian prisoners, and a cease-fire continues into this morning. "today in the bay"'s ginger conejero saab is live in san francisco. we've heard about the negotiations for some time now, but what's the final agreement? >> reporter: good morning, scott and kira. the deal reached involves a cease-fire that started last night, and aid to 2.3 million palestinians in gaza, who have endured weeks of israeli air

strikes. also part of that deal, 50 israeli hostages that are set to be released in exchange for palestinian prisoners. let's take a live look at the prison in west bank where 50 -- m sorry, 150 women and teenagers are set to be released this morning. those prisoners will be released at the same moment of at moment so many people have been waiting for, qatari negotiators say the first group of hostages to be released will include 13 women and children. among children believed to have been abducted is an american toddler who turns 4 years old today. her parents were murdered by hamas. >> hostages from the same families will be put together within the same patch. >> reporter: now, we have seen the horrific images of this war,

according to the red crescent, more than 5,000 palestinian children have been killed in gaza, including the 7-year-old dug out from the wreckage of her bedroom. her mother returned to what's left of her home, she says the girl was painting and her brother was sleeping. we hope, we expect that we can take a brief pause from stories, from images like this, with the release of the hostages in exchange for those prisoners. the families of those hostages also looking for a reprieve from what they have been going through, the agony they've been going through, and we are following this story all morning long and we will continue to bring you the latest. back to you. >> thanks, ginger. today marks two years since the deadly shooting of a former bay area police officer. kevin nishita was shot and killed in oakland while working as a guard. his widow is among those pushing

for a raul of district attorney pamela price. she told nbc bay area she feels the men accused of her husband's murder are not being prosecuted aggressively enough. the trial for two of the suspects begins on december 4th. a third, laron gilbert, is still at large. there's a $40,000 reward for information leading to his arrest. if you are up early with us this morning, perhaps you're one of the many people hoping to cash in on holiday deals. shoppers are expected to be out in full force this black friday. "today in the bay"'s kris sanchez is one of them joining us from the gilroy outlets with what's happening this morning and what happened overnight. we missed you on thanksgiving. hope you had a good one. >> reporter: i did have a good thanksgiving, kira. hope you did as well. we are out at one of our many outlet malls around the bay area, and it is very quiet here. i'm happy to hear that kari saw some folks by the great mall,

not so much at this location. the good news is that the holiday wreaths are up, we see lots of sales signs out here. there are surveillance cameras in the parking lots and we have seen a number of security patrols, so you should feel relatively safe as you are out looking for a good deal. but look at what happened in pleasant hill overnight. burglars made it into a kohl's store in pleasant hill using a car, they rammed a van into that store. police tell us they did get away with merchandise, they haven't said how much. but they did ditch the car at the scene. police are now trying to track those thieves down. in walnut creek, broadway's block going into broadway plaza to avoid just that kind of theft, as we have been reporting, you will see greater police presence and greater security in san francisco, san jose, and other shopping districts around the bay area. while a lot of customers have

told us that they are doing more shopping online, some people are willing to look for a deal in person. >> a lot we do online, but tomorrow my girls are excited about, okay, black friday, we might go get some stuff. >> do you wake up early? >> oh, you're those black friday people. >> yeah! >> reporter: we're still looking for those black friday people ourselves, but you might find a deal at one of the stores that opens early. we know best buy tells us they're opening at 6:00 in the morning, in terms of big retailers, target stores opening at 6:00, a couple of hours early. walmart is welcoming customers in at 6:00 as well. macy's, lowe's, old navy, all going to welcome customers in early at 5:00, but only at some locations. now, we are atn outlet mall. we haven't seen a lot of folks at this point. daniel, our photographer, did do a drive-by of the best buy store and also a walmart store and it didn't look like people were

probably want to know what the weather is going to be like. we know it's cold now, kari hall. it is cold out there and it will be even colder tonight, actually. we have a cold front coming through and it's going to keep it breezy throughout the morning. by this evening, by the time you get to enchant, it's going to be in the mid-50s. and the wind, at least, will be calming down. we'll dip to the upper 40s and low 50s later tonight. an all clear sky, and we're going to see some chilly temperatures across the bay area. in fact, some spots in parts of the east bay into the tri-valley may just briefly hit 60 degrees, and then go back to the 50s. so we are going to have a much cooler day around the bay area, with novato today headed for 64 degrees. also 64 in napa and in oakland. we'll talk about the weekend coming up. cinthia has a look at how those gas prices are faring. >> it's black friday, small business saturday tomorrow, or maybe you're just driving your

today in brentwood. starting out breezy and upper 40s at 8:00. as we head toward noon, it's only going to be 59 degrees, and it will be a cooler day than we've seen in quite a while. even colder tonight. we'll get a look at where we'll have frost advisories in the bay area in a few minutes. it's still holiday light over the bay bridge, but chp is warning us of a wind advisory over the bay bridge and over the altamont pass in both directions. so just make sure you're holding on extra tight and getting to those black friday shopping deals. we'll talk about the rest of the bay area traffic building up, or maybe not, on this friday coming up. i am bertha coombs from cnbc. wall street looking to open a bit higher on this black friday. markets closing higher on wednesday ahead of the holiday, helped by a drop in treasury bond yields, which briefly fell

to their lowest level in two months. the dow rose about 200 points, while the s&p and nasdaq were up about half a percent. all three major indexes are on track for four-week winning streaks, and big monthly gains. the nasdaq has rallied 11% so far in november, the s&p more than 8%, and the dow nearly 7%. today, just a reminder, it's just a half day of trading, so markets will be closing at 1:00 p.m. eastern time, in case you want to buy some of those stocks for somebody's stocking. meantime, the holiday season could lead to piling on more debt for a lot of us. a survey by wallet hub found about 25% of americans are still paying off debt from last year. experts say higher interest rates are just going to make it more expensive to try to pay down that debt, the compounding effect means the mountain just grows bigger. they advise making a list of exactly what you want to buy to

help avoid making expensive impulse buys. they say put your points to work to help you spend a little less. meantime, a few years ago peloton got in trouble over its advertising. now peloton's ceo is apologizing after the company's thanksgiving ride struggled with heavy demand. a lot of users were unable to get into peloton's annual turkey burn event, which was attempting to break the guinness world record for largest live cycling class. more than 30,000 apparently couldn't get in. the ceo, barry mccarthy, says the number of riders trying to join just overwhelmed the system. peloton says the class is now available on demand, and they're going to have an encore version of the turkey burn today at 10:00 a.m. eastern, scott and kira. so if you sign off, you could just jump onto your peloton and

tastes delicious. i don't know about the cross-contamination. >> what are you going to do? the win tasted good. >> my goodness. as i got into the car this morning, it was cold. >> yeah, just get ready for more of that, because it gets colder the next few mornings, even frost advisories going up. let's talk about what's ahead. yesterday it was so nice and mild during the afternoon, not so much today. we're starting out in the upper 40s in fremont, san jose is just, like, i'm out, you know, that sensor is not even working right now. it is 37 in palo alto and it's a little more windy in parts of the north bay, so temperatures a little higher there compared to elsewhere. in oakland, we're starting out temperatures in the low 50s, only reaching the low 60s for today. and eventually the wind will start to relax just a bit. but it's still going to be sweater weather, with dublin today only reaching 60 degrees. you're going to notice much colder temperatures for this

afternoon and into the weekend as well. there's not much of a change. so we only look at some low 60s for highs, and then for tonight and the next several nights, in parts of the north bay valleys, we will have some frost advisories in effect, and then farther to the north there will be freeze warnings. we're going to see temperatures very close to freezing over these next few days. and eventually by the middle of next week, we'll be watching out for rain. we'll see rain chances coming back next wednesday and possibly into next weekend. so we're going to see a lot of changes here ahead, at least in the near term we're continuing with sunshine. it won't be as warm as it has been, with some of the warmer spots inland reaching 64 degrees today. cinthia, you're watching the east bay for an issue. >> a couple of trouble spots i want to make sure everybody is aware of. we'll start in san lorenzo, at 238, two cars got into it. now they're off to the side, that's the good part. the tow truck has been called to the scene.

holiday weekend to one bay area family. and protecting yourself from black friday cyber scams. your holiday shopping could lead to identity theft. the steps experts say you should take to stay safe online. and a south bay tradition returning tonight. the changes visitors will enjoy at this year's christmas in the park. this is "today in the bay." good morning. thank you for joining us on this friday. i'm kira klapper. >> i'm scott mcgrew. laura and mark it have the day off. let's start with a look at the forecast. meteorologist kari hall is tracking what we can expect. >> it starts out cool and windy this morning. we're watching the north bay, where we've seen some of those higher wind gusts. but looking at where we're beginning, if you're heading out early for work or going black friday shopping, it's only 43 in dublin right now, and it's 48 in sonoma. san francisco now at 52 degrees. we're still getting those gusts in parts of the north bay at about 20 to 30 miles per hour,

and it looks to continue throughout the morning, at least through 9:00. we're still seeing some of those high wind gusts there, as well as near the coastline, and in some of our hills. into the afternoon and into the evening, eventually the wind will calm down just a bit, but may stay gusty through the sacramento valley. let's get a look at the north bay. temperatures will be much lower than yesterday, and once again, still kind of breezy. even with the sunshine, it's going to be a cool day, with calistoga reaching 62 degrees. cinthia, you're tracking some of those public transportation updates. >> yeah, because the traffic is still pretty light. there's less than 10 incidents on the chp page, which is good news this morning. let's help people that still have to get to work. on b.a.r.t., we are back to normal this morning, no service on the ace trains. if you take money, they are running on that weekday non school schedule. so you probably know the drill if you live or work around the city. we'll go to caltrain, lastly.

they need to know. >> reporter: avoiding shopping scams used to be so simple, watch out for pickpocketers, don't send money online to strangers, if an email looks fake, it probably is. in 2023, the scams are a lot more sophisticated than you may realize. >> these are organized criminal gangs, often located overseas, who are very savvy at what they do. >> reporter: the national consumer league has been tracking really convincing websites, product reviews, shipping alerts, all fake. basically these aren't the same email scams, just ask a former scammer. >> they're becoming smarter. >> reporter: chris maxwell is a reformed scammer, now consulting for the site socialcatfish.com. he says scammers aren't just looking for a quick payday. they want a gift that keeps on giving. just one of your major passwords, since so many of us reuse them across multiple accounts. >> once they have access to your

social security number, you have access to the driver's license. you have access to the credit card, bank account. it's very easy to do a lot of damage with information like that. >> reporter: here are five quick tips to defend yourself against the dangerous thieves and hackers. number one, don't reuse passwords. i know it's impossible to remember 300 different log-ins. at least use different passwords for your bank and email. consider using a secure password manager and always use two-factor authentification. number two, look out for shipping scams. get an email or text about a delayed delivery, don't click, don't respond, don't call the number. to avoid a trap, get your updates from the retailer or shipper sites. tip number three, you may think i'm nuts, but update your software. about four in ten americans hammer that remind me later button when prompted to patch up vulnerabilities and it's music to hackers' ears.

update your phone and software. tip number four, pay with a credit card. they have much better protections than much of the digital payments scammers prefer. >> gift card, cash app, paypal. >> reporter: if they ask you to pay a risky way, run away. >> pay the safest way, with a credit card for most people. >> reporter: tip number five, be aware of really convincing online websites you've never heard of. even black friday deals have their limits. >> listen to your gut. if it looks too good to be true, it probably is. >> reporter: with any luck, your vigilance will ensure some happy holidays, at least until those credit card bills roll in come january. >> good advice. a live look, a bay area holiday tradition returns at san jose's christmas in the park. >> the tradition gets started tonight, 6:00 p.m. it has brought families and friends together for more than four decades. many people have their favorite exhibits and event organizers

if you're going ice-skating in the san ramon kristi yamaguchi holiday ice rink, it's going to be very chilly. take a look at our lows tonight. it will cool off so fast, at 7:00, it is only 47 degrees. low 40s as we go later into tonight. also, glowfari will be happening at the oakland zoo. it's going to be at about 58 degrees at 5:00 when it opens, and down to about 54 degrees at 7:00. and we're also looking at some nice weather for the holiday lights in santa cruz. our temperatures for highs will reach into the mid-60s, but our evening temperatures will head toward the low to mid-40s. and if you're going to be staying along the coastline today, making that drive down highway 1, it's going to be in the mid-60s and cooling down to the mid to upper 40s. if your weekend plans take you to tahoe, take a look at those highs. staying in the 30s, and overnight lows in the teens.

wrongly considered ineligible for patrol and he is set to be released january 5th. this morning, another business shuttering in san francisco, this might be surprising. it's a starbucks. the sf chronicle says they will be closing a downtown san francisco shop as of today, the starbucks at 74 new montgomery street is closed right next to the palace hotel south of market. this comes after the coffee giant closed seven other downtown locations. starbucks says the recent closures do not mean they're leaving downtown entirely. there are two other locations to choose from on powell and o'farrell. we saw the true meaning of thanksgiving exemplified across the bay area. thousands of seniors in san francisco got a full thanksgiving meal thanks to the salvation army. cars lined up on the agency's kitchen at harrison street for their drive-through pickup. volunteers hand-delivered meals to seniors unable to leave their

homes. mayor london breed stopped by to help carve turkey and they served 4,000 meals yesterday. in the tenderloin, the memorial church provided thousands of meals for people. they've been doing that for years. the 21st annual thanksgiving event at the two star market took place in oakland. volunteers, including members of opd's latest economies gave out more than 800 plates of food. they also handed out groceries and clothes. go! >> about 20,000 people got their thanksgiving started by running as part of the 19th annual silicon valley turkey trot. over the years, the race has raised $11 million for charity and collected more than 250,000 pounds of food. san francisco also had its annual turkey trot.

baby giraffes, anybody, anybody? >> a new member of the giraffe family was welcomed last month, this is kendi and she is still learning how to position those long legs, trying to drink water at ground level. this is much more difficult, i am told, than it looks. while she wasn't successful this time, she figured it out. she's a quick learner. somebody needs to get her a straw. >> someone help her. >> i see this for you, scott, one of your tech companies inventing the giraffe straw. >> that will be a million dollar idea. >> sustainable. >> of course, a paper straw. enjoy the holidays, and today, i know a lot of people, it's not black friday until you go out running over people's heels with a shopping cart. so if you're doing that this morning, it is sweater weather. we are headed back to sunshine for this afternoon. this weekend, we'll have frosty conditions in parts of the north bay, a frost advisory in effect in the valleys, more cold mornings for the rest of the bay area, and next week we'll be welcoming back some rain coming in at midweek into next weekend. so looking at our highs for today in the east bay, with oakland reaching 63 degrees, also 63 in hayward, san ramon only 61 degrees. it's definitely going to be cooler than yesterday, and some of us will very briefly hit 60 degrees before it comes back to the 50s. and in parts of the peninsula, we're looking at some mid-60s, san mateo, oakland, napa, as well as novato, reaching 64 degrees. not much of a change tomorrow with lighter winds and a mostly

sunny sky. this is where we have the frost advisory in effect for parts of marin county to the valleys and sonoma and napa counties, toward solano it may be colder. we're going to see that continue into early next week in until the storm system arrives on wednesday. this looks to bring us waves of rain between next wednesday and thursday, and then possibly a bigger storm system coming in for next weekend. so we'll continue to monitor that as it gets closer. in the near term, we are going to see highs reaching into the mid to upper 60s and our overnight lows near freezing into next week. we are keeping much more of the same temperatures, but then the rain coming in from wednesday into thursday, while san francisco will continue to see highs in the mid-60s. cinthia, you were checking out the drive times. >> and just like the weather, stable over the next couple of days, we have some pretty stable conditions traffic-wise around the bay area, all of our sensors still showing green at this time.

maybe people are digesting the thanksgiving dinner. let's check in on drive times around the bay area. i want to do a wrap-around depending on where you live. tri-valley, grant line road to 680, under a 20-minute commute. the thing is, all of these trends in the next couple of slides all showing green. so let's do san jose over on into mountain view, under a 20-minute commute if you're going on 101. also sticking on 101 and heading up on 85, under a ten-minute. north bay, good morning to you. going from 37 to 508, under a ten-minute commute, and the golden gate bridge from 580, 12 minutes. if you're taking mass transit this morning, if you need to head to work, b.a.r.t. is all good and back to normal. the only things we have to be aware of is that there are no ace train services for today. maybe they'll pick back up tomorrow or during the week. we'll check on that.
