round of hostages set to be released in just hours from now. 13 israeli women and children, the first of 50 over the next few days in exchange for israel release, 150 palestinian prisoners. we got it all covered this morning, starting with raf sanchez in tel aviv for us. >> reporter: good morning. israel's military says its helicopters are on the runway ready to collect the first hostages as they are released in two hours' time. we are expecting to see 13 women and children handed from hamas to the red cross inside gaza and then taken to the border and transferred to the israeli military israel is willing to release 13 prisoners in exchange this whole deal depends on that cease fire agreement holding. this morning for the first time in 49 days, a weary calm in gaza as the cease fire takes hold these israeli tanks moving away from the front line and cautious

optimism that soon the first hostages will be released. 13 women and children snatched on october 7th the israeli military releasing video of preparations receive the hostages including the little kids. president biden saying overnight he hopes american toddler abigail will be among the first freed. abigail turns four years old today. israeli troops have been instructed not to tell her that her parents were murdered by hamas. >> so like just imagine that she comes home and is with her family is our light right now in such a very dark and terribly, terribly horrific period. >> reporter: other families still waiting. dafna, 15, and her 8-year-old sister ella haven't been seen since their kidnap was streamed live on facebook but their mother told they're not on the list of hostages

coming out today in gaza a final massive explosion before the cease fire. israel says it blue up hamas tunnels underneath the al-shifa hospital the first of hundreds of aid trucks crossing over from egypt, a welcome sight, even if it is a fraction of what gaza needs. civilians back out on to the streets. this family leaving the un compounds where they have been sheltering from israeli air strikes. but many are desperate to return to the north and see if their homes are still standing israel's military is forbidding that in what will be an early test of this fragile peace the hostages will initially be taken to an air base and then to hospitals across israel where they will be reunited with their families and the israeli military has given a lot of thought with how to deal with these little kids who have been given through so much

they will be given noise canceling headphones for the helicopters. >> so much anticipation waiting for this moment. joining us now is jeremy bash he served as chief of staff at both the department of defense and cia. jeremy, good morning so, jeremy, we're expecting that first batch of hostages to be released later this morning. raf had some details here, but there is a lot we don't know walk us through how this exchange will go. >> first 13 in that initial group will be brought to a military base. there are therapists there there are counselors there there are, of course, medical personnel. and then they will be reunited with their family members who have been told to go forward with hotels in the areas of that medical facility then i think israel has to wait to see whether or not an additional 12 or 13 come out tomorrow, the following day and the following day. after that 50 initial group, there will still be 180 hostages so this is just the beginning of

a very long, arduous process of course, on israel's northern border as they continue to fire rockets into israel. so this conflict is nowhere near over, but this is a hopeful sign. >> jeremy, these are people who have been held for almost 50 days they have been through unimaginable trauma, but they have also witnessed a lot and could be potentially very valuable to israeli intelligence how do they manage the sensitivities there while acknowledging that trauma but getting the information they need from them >> first, some are babies. they're too young to even talk so obviously they and the other small children are off limits for any intelligence debriefings. but to the extent that the adults have information about who held them, where they were held, in what conditions, where are the other hostages, all that information will be incredible interest to israel's security services over the course of several hours and several days and many weeks those debriefings will occur

right now israel is not going to try to stage any rescue for the next four days they will see how this initial hostage release plays out. >> hamas cannot stand toe to toe with the might of israel's military do you think hamas continues to release hostages if it's really their only leverage in this war? >> well, they are in the driver's seat, so they can buy a day of peace, if you will, or day of truce, i should say, with another ten hostage release every single day that's the terms of the deal after this initial group of 50, they can get another day with ten, another day with ten. that could last them 20 days that could be very important for hamas because israel has taken over the northern part of the gaza strip, is putting tremendous pressure on hamas and its terrorist infrastructure. >> jeremy bash for us this morning. jeremy, thank you. thanks. back here at home, we are heading into what is expected to be a record-setting travel weekend.

millions of americans are heading to the airport or hopping in their cars to head home after thanksgiving. just as they do, they are getting a first taste of winter. dylan is in for al this morning. she has an all-important holiday forecast good morning. >> yes we started off the whole thanksgiving travel season with that big storm up and down the east coast now we're looking at snow showers gathering itself towards the rockies, which is where we see our higher accumulations again, we will see this area of high pressure bring some of this snow through parts of the plain states through kansas, nebraska, parts of the panhandle and texas and oklahoma through the day on saturday as we go into sunday, look at this, eastern iowa into chicago, perhaps even st. louis where we could see lighter snow before it does transition over to rain for areas like cleveland and the interior northeast so snowfall totals will be in the higher elevations back towards the rockies.

hostages and palestinian hostages are expected to be released any minute now. we have learned that americans are not part of today's exchange. >> you can see a live look, this will be the exchange point. the release of palestinian prisoners, this is a prison in west bank, where 150 women and teenagers are set to be released. this all come as a cease-fire started last night that's expected to last four days. it's been seven weeks since the fighting started on october 7th, with the attack on israel. news tha probably won't surprise anyone who drives in the bay area, roads here are being called mediocre, according to a study. roads are scoredn a zero to 100 squal the bay area got a score of 67 for the seventh year in a row. san francisco got a 74, the scoring on the higher range is good san jose, the city with t most road miles, scored a 69. that's considered fair.

jarrett. >> i'm tom llamas, we are following breaking news out of the middle east. >> moments ago a regional diplomatic source close to the talks confirmed that 13 israeli hostages taken by hamas in the october 7th terror attack has been set free. they are now with the red cross before they will be brought back to israel later this morning. >> the release is part of a deal between israel and hamas that's been in negotiations for weeks. israel has agreed to a temporary cease-fire and the release of dozens of palestinian prisoners. >> raf sanchez is on the ground with the latest. bring us up to speed. >> reporter: that diplomat with knowledge of the situation saying those 13 israeli women and children are now free from hamas captivity after 49 days. they are in the custody of the red cross. this diplomat says, and they are heading or may have already arrived at the rafah crossing in

egypt. we are expecting from there that they will be transferred to the israeli military at the israeli-egypt border. israeli forces there will visually identify each of these hostages because they do not trust that hamas has necessarily delivered those 13 names that they said they would. the hostages will be given on the spot medical checks and for the first time in nearly seven weeks they will be able to call their families and tell them they are okay. we are learning from the government of thailand that in addition to those 13 israeli hostages, 12 thai nationals have also been released. these are, we believe, agricultural workers who were working in those israeli communities in the south on the 7th of october, and were taken hostage as well during that hamas terror attack. now, those 12 were not part of

these negotiations between israel and hamas, mediated by the united states and by qatar. hamas says it plans to release those thai citizens with no pre-conditions, we are expecting 25 hostages in total, freed from hamas captivity. we do not, at this moment, know who those 13 israeli women and children are, but earlier this morning a senior u.s. official said no americans are expected to be part of today's release. now, that is a painful blow to the american families waiting for news, but especially the family of that american toddler abigail mor edan who turns 4 years old today. president biden said overnight from nantucket he was hopeful that she might be released today, but as i said that senior u.s. official saying we are not expecting any americans to be freed right now. once those hostages are back in

israeli custody, they will be taken to an air base in the south of israel, which has been converted into a medical center, and from there they will be flown by helicopter to various hospitals all across this country, and it is at that point that we expect them to once again be reunited in person with their loved ones the beginning of what is going to be a long, painful, difficult healing journey, but a first step. and the israeli military has given a lot of thought about how to handle these hostages who we believe have spent most if not all of the last 49 days in tunnels underneath gaza city. they may be in need of acute medical care. we do not know if they have seen the sunlight. the israeli military planning to provide noise-cancelling headphones to those little children and telling the soldiers to leave their faces uncovered and to smile to

reassure the kids. now, this is day one of what is planned to be a four-day cease-fire with around 12 hostages released every day. and in exchange israel releasing palestinian women and male teenagers from israeli prisons. they have been gathered, those prisoners, at a facility in the occupied west bank ahead of their release. and the hope is that today's deal will hold, the cease-fire will hold, and that every day for the next four days we will see more hostages coming out of gaza. guys? >> and raf, as we see some of those live pictures in the video of where we think this transfer may happen, we're following those developments. i do have to ask you, because speaking to the families of those hostages, the trauma they have been put through over these last seven weeks, raf, what more do we know on how hamas is deciding to gets to go, and who

will stay somewhere in gaza, likely tortured, being held underneath in those tunnels? >> reporter: so, tom, we know that this deal for the first 50 israeli hostages is women and children only. we are not expecting any men to come out as part of this deal. we are certainly not expecting any of those israeli soldiers. we have heard from the qatari government who brokered this deal that the plan is to keep families together as these batches of hostages are released, and we do believe that these families, these hostages are going to be released in the communities that they were taken from. so it's possible that we may see them released one kibbutz at a time, one community at a time. again, we do not have confirmation of exactly who is part of this initial group of 13, but we do hope to see in the coming hours when we get official confirmation from the

israeli government about what is going on, there is a possibility that this four-day cease-fire could be extended, one additional day of cease-fire in exchange for ten more hostages, the qataris were clear, they structured this deal to incentivize both sides to abide by terms, hamas would get more days of its cease-fire if it releases hostage, israel mets more hostages if it holds off its strikes inside of gaza. how long this cease-fire can hold remains to be seen. we have already seen large crowds of palestinians inside of gaza displaced from their homes who want to return to them up in the north. the associated press reporting at least two palestinians have been killed so far by israeli fire inside gaza since the cease-fire went into effect. we asked the israeli military about that, they said that they

were looking into it. but, the hope is that this is proof of concept, that there can be an exchange between these mortal enemies, israel and hamas, that there can be negotiations that lead to the release of the hostages and hopefully this is only the beginning of a process that we'll see more of them emerging. >> raf, thank you for being on this story from the very beginning of it. now let's bring in senior white house correspondent kelly o'donnell in nantucket where president biden is spending the holiday weekend. kelly, good morning to you. no americans released as part of this deal. what is the white house saying this morning to american families, including the family of a girl who's supposed to turn 4 years old? >> reporter: well, the concern, of course, is could there be anything that would alter the plan, and at this point i've been talking with a number of white house officials, they're watching this closely, it is still their expectation that americans will ultimately be

transferred out of the custody of hamas, but not today. and of course that is disappointing, and they are watching this as it's developing, a number of officials have said that they are confident that the deal is holding. but of course it is such a fragile situation. the president has indicated that he did not want too say anything publicly until this transfer would take place. we have not yet had an update on the president's schedule today. i am told they are trying to assess the next steps for how the president would be publicly involved. privately we can tell you he has been extensively involved on the phone with officials from benjamin netanyahu, the prime minister, talking with the amir of qatar, dealing with this, with personal diplomacy and then of course he has deployed a number of of top officials on the ground and shuttling between the parties. the white house is watching this and we expect to hear more shortly from one official we heard from a short time ago but

dropped that wheelchair from the sky bridge this as people were watching from inside the plane. of course, now travelers and officials are reacting and this is highlighting, as you mentioned, those difficulties with making air travel accessible this example making evidence that there are issues. growing outrage this morning over this video showing a wheelchair crashing on to the tarmac at miami international after one handler sends it down the chute and another watches as it flips over the metal rail, slamming on to the ground. the witness who posted the video writing i saw them do this and laugh at the first two wheelchairs. i had to get it on film. the video getting millions of views and causing a lot of anger. one user posting, i can't believe this another writing, it's disgusting that somebody would be that reckless with someone else's belongings, especially a wheelchair pete bud judge said they will be investigating, writing this is totally unacceptable everyone deserves to travel safely and with dignity. american airlines says it is investigating, telling nbc in

we are back with our special series "inside the game. you know a lot of people, if you are anything like my family, you spent a lot of your day yesterday watching football. >> yes the san francisco 49ers overpowered the seattle seahawks 31-13. christian mccaffrey rushing for two touchdowns. >> you may have noticed during the game the two teams have something in common. jacob soboroff found out all about it. >> what's up, you guys good morning the seahawks and 49ers part of a major trend, australian punters. athletes from down under who grew up with the skill set of a local sport and adapted it to america's biggest game i'm headed to seattle to speak with their pro bowl punter michael dickson and see if i could learn to kick in either one of the two sports. michael dickson grew up in australia loving football.

but for him, that meant something like this. australian rules football. >> we grew up kicking a football to each other. instead of playing catch, we would go kick it. >> you would go kick it. >> yeah. i would get home from school and kick the footy every day i was obsessed with it. >> it's the most popular sport down under and even played by club teams like the seattle grizzlies. the rules can be complicated, but every player on the field has to be good at kicking, particularly while running, which has helped dickson become the most successful trend in the nfl, australian punters. there are currently four in the league taking the skills and instincts of australian football and translating them to the booming long kicks in the american game. >> i think it's helped me out. probably helped some other australians out. it gives you a bit of a head

start, but then the rest is on you. >> several of the punters attended the pro kick academy in australia, including athletes that get recruited for teams here in america. it's obvious that there is a lot of differences, but what does translate when the aussie game and the nfl? >> i can kind of move my leg and correct it i feel like i can kind of save it by having a feel for it with my old sport. >> while some of the skills carried over, the rules and equipment carried some culture shock. >> when you were kids and you watched american football, did you understand it? >> i only saw american football if it was in a movie or something. i had no idea. i played madden and would just pick hail mary every play. >> do you remember the first

time you held an american football >> the first one i got was in -- was for christmas in 2014 by my parents because i told them i wanted to punt so they bought me one, got it shipped to over here and went to the park and started kicking it. >> the first full american football game dickson ever watched was the first one he played in, for the university of texas. >> that whole freshman year is such a blur to me. i had no idea what i was doing i hadn't really, like, put on pads and a helmet. >> wait a minute so you had never even put on pads and a helmet? >> i put on a helmet that was like -- just like a piece of plastic fake helmet. like it wasn't a real helmet. >> in australia, you were basically playing with toys, like american football toys? >> yeah. the helmet was probably from some other era that we had found on e-bay. >> but that was long, long ago now dickson is considered by many to be the best punter in the nfl, one of the few that can create highlight reel plays for good reasons like two years ago when he
