is his hope and expectation that will happen soon. meantime, this morning, as part of that temporary pause in fighting, hundreds of aid trucks have headed into gaza to bring in badly needed supplies. >> there is a lot to get to this morning and our conversation with the cousin of two hostages just released. we want to begin with the latest on the ground in israel. we have erin mclaughlin on the ground in tel aviv. erin, what can you tell us? >> reporter: the cease-fire appears to be holding, peter. we expect the release of more hostages and palestinians today following yesterday's successful exchange. this morning, we are seeing the heart-warming scenes of families reunited, including 9-year-old ohad rushing into his father's arms for the first time in 49 days. ohad and his mother and grandmother were among the 13 israeli hostages released

yesterday. last night in tel aviv, there was an emotional gathering full of tears and dancing. dancing and celebration. tears for everything that has been lost and then in the occupied west bank, celebrations at the release of 39 palestinians from israeli prisons. meanwhile, in gaza, relief. yesterday, more than 130 aid trucks crossed from egypt with badly needed supplies. the israeli military warned not to return to their homes in the north. saying this cease-fire is temporary and the war is not over. peter. >> erin, the cease-fire appears to be holding. that is good news. we expect more hostags to be freida. what do we know about the status of that? >> reporter: a diplomat with knowledge tells nbc news that 13 hostages are expected to be

released today. the israeli government is not providing a list of names given how fragile the process is. >> erin mclaughlin, thank you. this hostage release and temporary cease-fire has been brokered thanks to officials in qatar. our correspondent keir simmons is in doha with more on all this. keir, good morning to you. >> reporter: laura, good morning. these are tense hours after the lead negotiator in qatar described as an intense day yesterday. he showed me around the hostage rescue operations room where they have been monitoring the truce and freeing of hostages. there was disappointed that americans were not among the hostages yesterday, but he told me he is hopeful that americans will be released in the days to

come and they will be able to find the civilian women and children possible. the plan has been for hamas to ascertain, we're told, where some of the hostages are as well as releasing the hostages they have immediately in their captivity. is there progress being made on that? >> so, again, the agreement has clearly mentioned each side's commitment. to this moment, i can assure you that the parties are doing their best to fulfill that commitment. this is only a seed to a brighter path in the conflict. >> reporter: so, laura, they are hopeful this is building trust. it is a fragile process. every day, they get a list of hostages and they find out who is coming fragile process, inde.

we know there is a lot of diplomatic activity about that. talk about that. >> reporter: there is a flurry of diplomacy. hamas complaining not enough aid was delivered. the red crescent president is saying 61 trucks, the largest so far, are going in to gaza. i'm told that things are still on track and moving. a plane with qatari officials has landed inomentum. there are hopes and fears, laura, that more hostages and more trust built, but fears this could collapse. >> keir, thank you for your reporting. one family is cautiously

celebrating the hostage release. for the last seven weeks, one has been calling for the release of six family members. cousins kidnapped by hamas. on friday, a lot of posts with good news on instagram. two cousins, she wrote, there you are, dani and amelia. they were among the first group of israeli hostages released. she is with us this morning. we are with you, alayna, on a bittersweet day. i want to show the moments where your loved ones were reunited. amelia turned 6 in january. hugging her grandmother. there is another picture there you see of danielle freed in the hospital. can you describe this feeling? >> it is surreal. it is a great sigh of relief. we can breathe for a moment to see them.

you know, it's a miracle. >> have you talked to them at all? have your relatives heard from them? >> i haven't had a chance to speak to them. they had a long journey yesterday and met my aunt and uncle at the hospital. i think they are relaxing, i hope. >> how is their health? >> physically they are in good health. >> the picture, by the way, of your aunt, your mom's sister hugging amelia, a few months shy of 6, is inincredible. you can imagine the embrace. for your family, this is a bittersweet moment. six cousins and four still there. your cousin and her husband. three twin daughters held by hamas right now. your journey is not over yet. can you talk about what your message is and your hope is to be their voice that they will come home soon? >> this fight isn't over.

we need to get them out of there as soon as possible and reunite with my aunt as well. we need all of the hostages out as soon as possible. it is really all we can think about and it is bittersweet, like you said. we are glad to see amelia and danielle out. we cannot completely exhale until all are back. >> have you been in touch with other families? i imagine this is a group that never wanted to come together to have that kind of bond. you can only talk to people who know how you feel and what you are going through at the moment. >> i met with some families that are u.s. based and have been in the u.s. her mother and goldberg's mother. i was able to meet with them at the rally. there is a forum here in new york. we have a group with other people. >> you said your heart was screaming when you saw these

people under the winter alerts and winter storm warnings. including kansas city and wichita and santa fe. we have a system that will bring snow early this morning, but really intensify that snow as we get into the later parts of today. it will push through the plains. some slick spots extended from oklahoma into iowa and minnesota where we deal with snow and a little bit of rain. you see the wintry mix that may impact you from oklahoma to texas. that is the spot where on the roads is difficult and maybe airlines in kansas city may have difficulty. tomorrow, we see a larger area included in the difficult travel for sunday. the snow will slow that travel for parts of the great lakes. you see the rain through parts of the ohio valley. we have the low that will push rain up into portions of the mid-atlantic and northeast. today, the middle of the country. elsewhere, sunny skies. you will not have a difficult time getting around there. from the great lakes down to the gulf coast is where we watch for slower travel.

bargain deals. things going off without a hitch, but in new jersey, shoppers were evacuated from the american dream mall. a bomb threat was called in and the matter still remains under investigation. out west in los angeles, pro-palestinian demonstrators disrupted shopping at the mall there. the national retail federation expecting shoppers to spend in the ballpark of $966 billion over the holiday. they note it has slowed down over the past two years, guys. >> george, this is the good time to be at the walmart. for you who brave it when the crowds show up, what are the best tips to keep in mind for the next few days? >> reporter: obviously getting here early is paramount. this is the good way to beat the crowds. you want to come up with a game plan. stick to a budget and try to

derek chauvin was being held at the federal prison in tucson, arizona, where the incident took place. the federal bureau of prisons say live-savings efforts were taken to save chauvin. he is serving a sentence after kneeling on george floyd's neck. and you likely have seen law suits filed on friday as a window closed for survivors to file the civil suits in new york. sean diddy coombs is accused by another woman for an incident in the early '90s. an ex-aide to former governor andrew cuomo is suing him for continuous sexual harassment. the former aide an accused cuomo

pistorius is one day closer to being released from prison. the south african parole board decided to release the track star in january. pistorius made history as the first double amputee to compete in the olympics in 2012 earning him the title of "blade runner." he shot and killed his girlfriend, reeva steenkamp, on valentine's day in 2013 firing through a closed bathroom door. in a high-profile murder trial, pistorius told the court that he mistook reeva for a home invader. he was later found guilty of murder after prosecutors appealed. a decade in the making, her family mentally prepared for this day. >> they have known all along there will come a day that oscar pistorius will be released on parole. whether he is rehabilitated is

were released, 24 in all, including 13 israelis on the temporary cease-fire first day. an emotional day. erin mclaughlin is in tel aviv with the latest. erin, what more do we know about this? >> reporter: laura, the cease-fire appears to be holding and in the coming hours, we expect to see the release of more israeli hostages and more palestinians as yesterday's exchange is being seen as successful. this morning, we are seeing heart-warming images of israeli families reunited. including the asher family. yesterday, doron and her two girls were among the 13 israeli hostages released this morning. we are seeing them reunited with their father yoni. it is that image that you are

seen on the screen right now which is so powerful to the other families of the remaining hostages in gaza. meanwhile, in gaza this morning, there is relief. according to the palestinian red crescent, 61 trucks full of essential supplies, the largest convoy since the war began, crossed from egypt into gaza with badly needed relief for palestinians there. it was seen out this morning trying to pick up that essential supplies that they have needed so badly in the last few weeks. meanwhile, the israeli military is warning palestinians in gaza not to return to their homes in the north saying the cease-fire is temporary and the war is not over. back to you. >> erin, thank you so much. appreciate it. >> no americans were among the hostages released on friday, but president biden is hopeful they will be released in the next few

days. nbc correspondent kelly o'donnell is traveling with the president in nantucket this morning. >> reporter: good morning, peter. president biden has been watching this closely. senior officials have said they will not come with unexpected expectations for the release today, but they know the americans were among the early release. not part of the transfer, but early in the conflict. that does set up an expectation that americans may not be among those released today. still hopeful, of course, the president has linked himself directly to the diplomacy here and went on to thank the key partners who have been part of the negotiations. >> we expect dozens of hostages to be returned to their families and we remember those being held and renew our commitment to work for their release as well. two american women and one 4-year-old child, abigail, remain among those missing.
