7:07 am
is dead after a crash in the south bay. this is a look at that intersection. the scene is clear right now. this is at capital expressway at copperfield drive in san jose. police tell nbc bay area a pedestrian was hit just before 1:00 this morning, and that person later died at the hospital. officers continued to investigate the crash. it is the 44th deadly collision in the city this year, and the 25th pedestrian death. a manhunt is underway after a fight erupted outside a concord restaurant forcing people to evacuate. it happened at the yard house restaurant around 7:00 last night. police say two men and a woman got into a fight, and those people ended up pepper spraying one another. that triggered the restaurant to evacuate. police say several people were sickened by the pepper spray. paramedics treated several at the scene, but a few had to go to the hospital.
7:08 am
>> we were sitting at the corner of the bar. all of a sudden, a couple people started running out. we were wondering what is going on. we find out somebody sprayed pepper spray, and one by one, everybody started going out. >> police say they're working with the yard house, looking at cameras to track down the people who started that fight. they could face charges of disturbing the peace and spreading a toxic substance. turning now to small business saturday. some retailers in san francisco's miss district reported that business was actually a bit slower than usual. several businesses pointed to a major factor that they say has changed business. traffic because of the valencia bikeway pilot project was put in place in august. it brought a bike lane to the street from 15th to 24th and added loading zones and restricted parking. some people say it made it difficult for customers to get to their stores.

welcome back. as we have been reporting this morning, israel has a list of hostages set to be released, and the u.s. is hopeful that american abigail adan will be one of them. she just turned 4 friday. join me in welcoming kristen welker, moderator of "meet the press." great to see you this morning. thanks for joining us. you -- >> thanks for having me. >> you interviewed jake sullivan this morning. that's how we learned, he told you about the u.s. being hopeful that little abigail will be
7:14 am
released today with this group of the third group of hostages. what was jake able to share with you about the u.s. role in this truce or in the hostage negotiations to date? >> well, kira, good to be with you. first of all, he said that the united states believes that at least one american will be on the list of those released. that could happen at any moment now, so we're watching and waiting to see. we know that a list was released including israelis. but little abigail would have dual citizenship, so that doesn't preclude her from being released. look, the president, according to jake, has been very involved in terms of reaching out to the regional leaders to make sure that this deal happened in the first place to try to work through that delay that happened yesterday. but the pressure is on the biden administration because they have said they believe as many as three americans could be released by tomorrow.
7:15 am
they're still hopeful that that will happen. but jake was also very candid, kira. he said they do not know if all of the missing americans are still alive. they don't know if they're being held hostage. add to that the fact that hamas doesn't necessarily have control of all of the hostages, that some of these other groups may have the hostages. so it's a really complicated complex situation. the other component to this, which i asked jake about, was the question of aid. we know that there are growing divisions within the democratic party, including democratic senator bernie sanders calling for aid to israel to be conditioned on plans to mitigate civilian deaths, which there have been protests throughout this country and all around the globe, saying that the civilian death toll is too high. and so i asked sullivan about that. he didn't rule out that the president might support such an agreement. so a lot of big issues here at the forefront. this is a big test for joe biden.
7:16 am
obviously, he's in a fight for his own re-election. our poll show him getting low remarks on his handling of this crisis so far, but if he could secure the release of more hostages, that could be a turning point. >> we heard from your polls that he's losing ground with voters 35 and younger, which he held by 20% in the last election. kristen, thanks. hope you had a beautiful thanksgiving with your gorgeous family. hope you join kristen for this morning's "meet the press." we'll interview representative mike turner and national security adviser jake sullivan. stick with us for "today in the bay." now we turn to the last three national elections in the united states. they produced record turnouts of voters, and indicator of voter interest and some might say an endorsement of the american political system. but that likely will change in 2024 if the current move remains in place. that's because a survey of voters by the pew research center found out most have had it with politics. political analyst larry gerston is here. my mother is watching, i'm sure she is agreeing with that. what else can you share about this new survey? >> it's a tough one. the simple fact is, the pew research center found 74% -- put it the other way, 27% like what's going on. so do the math and see that most people don't. that's a problem for american society, no question. if you are not happy, it's not good. >> so, umm, what accounts for

the public's dismay? is it the tenor of our political leaders, something else, the silos we're all in? >> you got about an hour or so? it's tough. that poll found a lot of nuggets there that tell you what exactly is accounting for the public's distaste, if you will. we start with candidate choice. that's a surprise. people don't like the candidates. they want to see somebody else. but then it gets deeper than that. special interest, 84% say they don't like special interest. and 85% regarding campaign costs. too much money spent. 77% of them want term limits for congress. another 74% want term limits for the court. they don't like anybody. they don't like what's going on. so you put this together and you see a gloomy and doomy collection of people when it comes to the political system.

>> can i be so bold to say none of that is going to change in the next months. we can't change the rules on all these things you just mentioned, so what's the takeaway? >> democracy depends upon a content political system, content voters, content citizenry. when you have people who aren't, they're distrustful, displayed, they've had it. and that leads to lower turnout come the next november. and when you have lower turnout, you have a democracy in trouble. they count on us. the system counts on this happening. if not, something has to be done. >> some might argue, if you're not happy, you have to do something about it. that means vote. larry, thanks for joining us. 7:51 right now. up next, a quick look at the top stories, including new information just into our newsroom on the hostages being
