good monday morning and thanks for joining us i'm jessica layton. >> glad you're with us i'm frances rivera today is the last day of the hamas-israel truce, and another round of prisoner exchanges is set for later. on sunday, hamas released 17 hostages from captivity as israel freed 39 palestinian detainee, all of them minors let's go live now to claudio lavanga who is following the story for us claudio, good morning. what more do we know about those who were released? >> reporter: good morning, frances. well. >> a mong those released on sunday was abigail edan, an american girl who just turned 4 years old last friday while she was still being held hostage in gaza now according to her great aunt who spoke to nbc's lester holt just earlier this month, both parents of abigail were shot dead by hamas gunmen after they stormed their kibbutz on october 7th. she also said that abigail was in her father's arms when the

gunman shot him dead he fell on top of her, and then abigail had to crawl out from her dead father's body, full of blood and managed to run to her neighbor's house she hid with the neighbors' family in a bomb shelter, but then all of them including abigail were taken hostage and taken to gaza. now back from abigail, another 12 israeli citizens, three hostages from thailand and one israeli russian were released on sunday in exchange for 39 palestinians who were freed from israeli jails. they were given a warm welcome by a large crowd in ramallah in the occupied west bank last night. according to israel, at least one of the israeli citizens who were released on sunday, elna avraham was returned in serious and life-threatening conditions and she had to be flown with the helicopter to a nearby hospital. now following the release of the

hostages, including abigail, president biden said of abigail that she -- what she endured was unthinkable. and he said he would speak to the prime minister of israel, benjamin netanyahu, to discuss efforts to extend the four-day pause in the fighting which ends tonight at midnight eastern time an extension that will require an extension of 24 hours per every additional 10 hostages released by hamas. frances? >> so many of of those families still waiting for reunions similar to what we've been seeing claudio, thank you a tanker hijacked in the middle east has been freed by the u.s. navy officials say. the merchant vessel central park in the gulf of aidan sent out a distress signal after rockets were shot at it from yemen five armed men then took over the ship the nearby uss mason responded with help from allied ships. the hijackers apparently tried to flee, but they were detained by u.s. forces the yemeni houthi group said

they would target israel and while the central park belongs to an israeli company, no israelis were on board. also breaking this morning, an arrest has been made in the shooting of three college students in vermont this weekend. police say that on saturday night 48-year-old jason eaton approached them and fired at least four rounds. authorities say eaton has been arrested after his house was searched he is expected to be arraigned today. the three were visiting family in burlington for thanksgiving our liz kreutz has this report >> all units be advised the shooter is unaccounted for. >> reporter: burlington police say around 6:30 p.m. saturday, the friends, who were speaking arabic and wearingra palestinian kaffiyeh scarves were out walking when they were confront beside awhite man with a handgun who without speaking fired at least four rounds before fleeing on foot. >> we heard a man screaming in pain it was very scary. >> reporter: police say the three men, all 20 years old were

shot and transported to the hospital families of the victims have identified as hisham awartani, a junior at brown university, and kinnan abdalhamid, a jr. at haverford college, both u.s. citizens and tahseen ahmad, a junior at trinity college. the friends grew up together in the west bank city of ramallah rani amaya is their former school director. >> they're amazing students and we're proud of them. and they were there for the thanksgiving holiday, spending it at hisham's grandmother's. >> reporter: the victims' families releasing a joint statement saying as parents, we are devastated by the horrific news that our children or targeted and shot. they're calling on law enforcement to treat it as a hate crime. >> we're afraid it is most likely a crime against palestinians. >> reporter: officials saying there is no known motive yet, but the burlington mayor saying the possibility of a hate crime is being prioritized in the

investigation. the family say two of the three men remain in icu. risch sham, shot in the spine, may not be able to walk again. and the parents who live in the west bank are now desperately trying to get here to the u.s. to be by their son's side. >> and our thanks to liz kreutz for that report. the former minneapolis police officer convicted in the murder of george floyd is in the hospital this morning after being stabbed at the arizona prison where he is currently serving a 21-year sentence an attorney for derrick chauvin says his family has not been given any updates since the incident a prison spokesperson did not respond for comment. a law enforcement source tells nbc news that chauvin was seriously injured in the attack, but he is expected to survive. george santos is fighting for his political life this morning. the house could vote as early as tomorrow on whether to expel the embattled republican after an investigation found evidence of flagrant ethics violations but he is not going down quietly. our brie jackson is live in d.c.

with the latest. hi, brie good morning santos sounded despient over the weekend. >> that's right. george santos lashed out at his colleagues on social security on friday, but also appeared to accept his fate, saying he expects to be voted out of congress this week the new york republican has already survived two previous attempts to kick him out of the house. but that was before the bipartisan ethics committee found that santos fraudulently exploited every aspect of his house candidacy for his own personal profit. he allegedly used the money to pay for his personal rent, to take out cash from an atm at a casino, to spend lavishly at designer store, and for cosmetic treats like botox. and on the website only fans, which is known for its adult content. while the report did not make any explicit recommendations, the gop chairman of the ethics panel filed a resolution to kick the lawmaker out for his part, santos called his

colleagues hypocrites. >> i have colleagues who are more worried about getting drunk every night with the next lobbyist that they're going to screw and pretend like none of us know what's going on. it happens every single week where are the ethics investigations in that >> and as you mentioned, the house could take up that resolution as early as tomorrow. it would need a two-thirds majority to pass and the decision would be historic only five members of the house have been expelled before, and santos has said he will not resign on his own. frances? >> brie jackson for us, brie, thank you. new this morning, teachers and students in portland, oregon will return to their classrooms today. the portland association of teachers reached a deal sunday with the city's public school district, bringing an end to that strike that began more than three weeks ago. the tentative deal includes a

more than 6% raise for employees with further increases in the following years. this latest work stoppage kept nearly 45,000 students out of school winter arrives in full force for the great lakes this morning. storms continue to dump snow across the region. nbc meteorologist michelle grossman is tracking just how much to expect good morning >> good morning. that lake-effect snow machine is in full effect we could see up to four feet in some spots the snow continues to fall that's where you see the blue and the wider blue, the heaviest snow falling into new york, into new england as well. also looking at some heavy rain falling in new england, mainly in maine right now we're looking at rain also through portions of the interior northeast. a wet morning in some spots. be the big story for today will be the lake-effect snow. we're looking at alerts in effect until wednesday we have lake-effect snow warnings also winter weather advisories and up to four feet in some
