been reached to extend the pause in fighting for two more days. >> the announcement comes as israel's military says another group of hostages is on its way to israeli territory. emotional reunions like this one, a mother embracing her son after she spent 50 days in captivity and new images of 4-year-old american abigail edan with relatives at the children's hospital in israel today. her parents were murdered during the hamas terror attack on october 7th, she was released yesterday, president biden said he spoke with abigail's family today and is working with israeli counterparts to make sure she gets the care she needs. >> joining us now the erin mac laugh lin in tel aviv. what do we know about the group of hostages released today? >> reporter: this is certainly good news for the mate td 150
12:03 pm
hostages still being held by hamas in gaza. qatari officials as well as hamas announcing earlier today this extension, two-day extension, it could go on longer than that, originally the deal that was agreed upon was four days, 50 hostages for 150 palestinians being held in israeli prisons, but there was always the option in the view of israeli officials for hamas to take the initiative and agree to an extension, the way they get that extension is releasing ten more hostages for every ten hostages they release they get another day of cease-fire, or respite for the people of gaza and an opportunity for more humanitarian aid to get into gaza something the white house is drawing attention to, in a statement they put out today, it's saying we're talking full

advantage of the pause in fighting to increase the amount of humanitarian aid moving into gaza and we'll continue our efforts to build a future of peace and dignity for the palestinian people. now we're waiting on an estimated 11 hostages, that would bring the total to 50 under the original four-day agreement, we're waiting for those 11 hostages to cross into egypt and they're in safe hands with israeli soldiers. >> ali, what is the white house saying about this extension of the cease-fire and the americans still being held hostage in. >> reporter: kate, the white house spokesperson admiral john kirby talked about this today saying the president played a key role in brokering not just the original deal but also sealing the deal on this extension of a cease-fire, as you heard erin mention, white house officials are talking about the benefits for all parties involved for this to be extenned, talking about ramping-up that humanitarian

aid, working for peace for the palestinian people and kirby talked about how hamas could potentially benefit from this extension during the briefing. listen here. >> i want to stress, and this was always part of the calculus, any discussion in pause was always part of the calculus, to benefit from it. israeli people have benefited by it, so too american people have benefitted with little abigail back with her family. sot it's a balance. >> reporter: kate on the remaining americans it's still unclear whether the roughly eightover nine remaining americans in gaza, whether americans would be among the next hostage releases today or in the next few days, he said that there's still hope that two american women who fit the criteria will be released soon, but he also said that there's

12:08 pm
conference earlier today, it was said that these seem to be hateful act but they weren't sure yet whether it's a hate crime quote/unquote. what's the distinction there, what does it take to prove a hate crime. >> the police, the fbi, they would have to uncover information that specifically said that the motivation for this incident, for this attack, was based on some sort of a hate crime that these individuals were attacked because they were palestinian american or any sort of protected status. jason eaton the person charged here allegedly told the atf i've been waiting for you. his statements to him, very limited statements that's the reason why they were able to charge him. but we don't know why he did it. >> tom winter, thank you. winter weather is causing issues for people returning home

this is an nbc news "special report." here's lester holt. good day, everyone. we are coming on the air with breaking news in the middle east where the fourth group of israeli hostages taken captive by hamas has just been released. as we also learned today that israel and hamas both agreed to extend their truce and pave the way for more hostages to potential be freed in the coming days. according to the israeli defense forces, the red course says there are 11 israeli hostages in their custody. you can see video from
12:45 pm
al-jazeera that appears to show them here. it brings the total number of freed israeli hostages up to 50, the number israel and hamas agreed to last week. in exchange, qatar said israel released 33 more palestinian prisoners, bringing the number of palestinians released up to 150 since the truce began. the truce will stay in place for another two days, and, as we said, leaving the door open for more hostages to be released. let's get straight to our chief foreign correspondent richard engel. richard, what happens next for the hostages and what can we expect in the coming days now that the truce has been extended? >> reporter: so we are talking about a new batch of hostages, 11 israelis. they are two women described as mothers, and nine children. the red cross says they are in their custody. the israeli military confirmed that they have been handed over by hamas to the red cross and
12:46 pm
are making their way to israel. they are all from a single kibbutz, which is right along the gaza border. it is one of the first places that hamas attacked on october 7th. now they will be heading first to a military base, that's the assumption. all of the freed hostages have first gone to an israeli base and then taken to a hospital. generally the hospitals are aware these family reunifications take place. after the hostages are given medical treatment, after they're given some psychological treatment, it is also a private place where they can meet with relatives, they can meet with supporters without the glare of the media, without the attention of potentially unwanted friend or relatives. so this is a very important time for israel and it comes just as the deal has been extended. this deal was supposed to end in about an hour and a half from
12:47 pm
now, and according to qatari mediators who are key in brokering this truce it has been extended for two more days. so we'll see if this leads to a breakthrough. qatar negotiators hope it could become a basis of trust and the start of a larger peace agreement to stop the fighting in the gaza strip on a more permanent basis, but the israeli government says this is strictly about the hostages and that its campaign against hamas will continue. >> richard, we note no americans among this current group. how is the decision made? is it hamas or is it a point of negotiation as to who gets released and how much notice is given as to who will be released? >> reporter: an incredibly complex question. it sounds very easy, but it is really a negotiated process. i think that's why we've seen so many delays over the course of
12:48 pm
these last several days because hamas will put out a list. the israelis will discuss the list. they will be back and forth discussions. the qataris because the israelis and hamas don't communicate directly, so the qataris or in some case egyptians have to relay bad news and objections between the two sides. the lists are formed by something of a consensus process with the two sides proposing who they want to free. but the general parameters are understood. hamas says it is releasing civilians which it classifies as women and children, and in exchange the israeli government is releasing minors and female prisoners from its jails. >> richard, thank you. let's go to nbc news white house correspondent monicaal alba. we know the administration has been central to the negotiations. what's the reaction to what

we've heard so far? >> reporter: less tau, the president has been deeply engaged in the conversations leading to the news today that the temporary truce would be extended by two days. we know it was president biden himself who spoke to his counterpart in qatar over the weekend when there was a snag to potentially release more hostages. the administration says it was the president trying to communicate to try to get that resolved that got that back on track, and that it was a conversation yesterday specifically with prime minister netanyahu where they discussed this idea of this extension. and where both the u.s. and israel felt strongly that that would be the key to getting more hostages out, it also came on the same day yesterday as we saw the release of the first american, that dual israeli american citizen, just 4 years old, ab gal adan who turned 4 in captivity on friday after her parents were murdered brutally by hamas. she is now reunited with family

members. the president spoke with some of them yesterday, and today he is discussing the need for continuing this temporary cease-fire to get more americans out. we know there are at least two more women who would fit the criteria of the initial framework that the u.s. is hoping to see released, but it does not appear they are a part of the group today but likely could be included perhaps tomorrow or the next day, though none of that is finalized yet. in total we know there were around ten americans believed to be held, lester, but the president says he will not rest president says he will not rest until they all come to severe ulcerative colitis takes you off course. put it in check with rinvoq, a once-daily pill. when i wanted to see results fast, rinvoq delivered rapid symptom relief and helped leave bathroom urgency behind. check. when uc tried to slow me down... i got lasting, steroid-free remission with rinvoq. check. and when uc caused damage rinvoq came through by visibly repairing my colon lining. check. rapid symptom relief... lasting steroid-free remission...
