in north carolina. back in clarksville, tennessee, a tornado pulled her home apart while her entire family was inside. >> the wind just took me, and i just remember waking up on this side of my house, looking for my home. and then i saw my children over there. and my husband was in the debris back there. >> reporter: families trying to salvage what they can as the community promises to work together to rebuild what they have lost. >> i have seen this community come together like no other before. and i know we're going to do it again. >> reporter: now, some schools remain closed because of damage. others on a delay because of power outages. you can see power lines like this one fully broken, collapsed not only in the middle of lawns, but still the roads. even though crews are working around the clock to restore power, it could be weeks for some of the hardest hit areas to get that power fully restored. >> just devastating. thank you. 7:06. let's bring in mr. roker to

bring a check of that weather. >> good morning to you. we are looking at still 28 million people under winter weather advisory warnings, even some flood mornings from west virginia all the way into the northeast and parts of new england. you can see on the radar the heaviest rain moving into boston, nantucket, parts of long island as well all the way into maine. on the backside of the system, a snowy finish to this. the storm system will pull up a few lingering showers ahead through new england during the day today. it will be breezy into the evening. in fact, we are looking for wind gusts of anywhere from 20 to 60 miles an hour, especially as you get to nantucket. 39 mile-per-hour wind gusts in boston, 43 i should say, in boston. rainfall amounts, the heaviest going to be up into maine. and then light snow, a little heavier snow as you get into burlington, vermont. anywhere from 4 to 6 inches of show. guys?

>> thank you. also this morning fall-out is growing in the wake of those congressional hearings. focused on ant semitism on college campuses. one ivy league president whose testimony anger the critics resigned over the weekend. now the leaders of two other prestigious universities are still pressure to do the same. we start with stephanie gosk. good morning. >> reporter: good morning. the criticism is getting sharper even as the school leaders tried to clarify the comments they made comments regarding free speech on campus and how far it should go. over the weekend, the president of the university of pennsylvania stepping down. calls for the presidents of mit and harvard to follow suit getting louder. pressure is mounting on the presidents of mit and harvard less than a week after they testified before congress about rising anti-semitism on campuses nationwide. >> does calling for the genocide of jews violate the rules of bullying and harassment, yes or no? >> it can be depending on the

killing was a hate crime. but anti-semitic threats have been on the rise since the war began. in california, a couple speaking out about an attack. police are calling it a hate crim. both in their 70s, the couple say they were walking to synagogue when a man ran up behind them. >> all of a sudden, i saw this guy hitting my husband with a belt and screaming -- sorry -- give me your earrings, jew. >> reporter: they chased the man off, and he was later caught and arrested by police. so back to the university of pennsylvania, the vice chair of trustees have been named intrimmer chair and will serve until a permanent successor is appointed. liz magill will remain a tenured faculty at the law school. meanwhile, mit's governing board released a statement standing

let's turn to a late reversal from former president trump announcing yesterday he will not go back on the witness stand in his new york city fraud trial. in a civil trial in a post on truth social, trump saying he has nothing more to say, calling the case a complete and total election interference. the trial was scheduled to resume today, but has now been pushed back until tomorrow trump and his company are accused of overvaluing properties to get favorable loans from banks that they otherwise would not have been entitled to. >> as for the presidential race, a new poll is out from the des -- "des moines register" nbc news, and media com, shedding ligh on the iowa caucuses now just five weeks away nbc's national political correspondent steve kornacki is here to break it down. okay so five weeks to go. what does this poll show >> we do this with "the des moines register, known for having the most accurate poll in iowa.

they find donald trump just other a month to go with an outright majority. 51 support for the former president. haley at 16% i think if it's discouraging to see this, what may be more discouraging is the trend. we last polled i what in october -- iowa in october look at this trump is up 8 points since that last poll. desantis only 3. think about the month desantis has had in iowa. you got the governor's endorsement. you got a key evangelical angel debate with gavin newsom, and it is not t endorsement. >> the debates >> he had the debate with gavin newsom it has not turned into measurable momentum for him in this race. >> well, let's talk about nikki haley because in other states we have seen momentum here she seems flat. what do you see? >> yeah. she moved up here in the last poll no gain since. the problem for haley is basically this you are looking at how independents are breaking in iowa independents are a relatively small part of the electorate

the state supreme court temporarily blocking a lower court's ruling preventing a 31-year-old woman from obtaining an abortion. the mother of two who is 20 weeks pregnant she was told by doctors that her fetus has a rare disorder and could be stillborn, putting her health and future fertility at risk laura, good morning to you walk us through what happened here and why did the state supreme court step in here >> so kate cox is somebody who wants to be pregnant she wants to grow her family she's healthy. she's young.e doctors say if sh get this abortion, she could be at ris she's 31 but doctors have said if she does not get this abortion she could be at risk for not getting pregnant again given all the complications. but the state of texas went to the highest court, that state court to put a stop to all of this now, the court right now has just pressed pause they haven't issued a substantive ruling they want to get smart on the case, but her doctors say, look, time is of the essence every day that goes by, her health is at risk. she has been to the emergency room four times in the last month. she has been leaking fluid at

early-morning fire destroying a san francisco duplex. >> this is a live look at the scene on masonic between grove and hayes street, one block from the panhandle. firefighters are still at the scene this morning. masonic is closed between fulton and fell, if that's part of your route. this is the video showing the building fully engulfed this morning. it started a little after 3:00. firefighters tell us one resident had to jump from the top level in order to escape the flames. a person and a second person were taken to the hospital. so far, no update on their continue this morning. firefighters now confirm that there was some sort of construction work happening at that home. not clear how the fire started. frustrated students and parents are gathering this hour following the recent string of threats at one school district. we want to give you a live look at montgomery high school in santa rosa. that's where parents and students are planning a rally in what they're calling a peaceful protest. now, it comes in response to

with ovarian cancer two years ago. earlier this year she announced she is in remission. she is now opening up publicly about her journey. hoping to remind others the importance of remaining vigilant about your health. this morning tennis icon chris evert is opening up about a new health battle. the 68 revealing her cancer is back less than a year after remission, writing in a statement, while this is a diagnosis i never wanted to hear, i once again feel fortunate that it was caught early. based on a pet ct scan, she underwent another surgery where doctors found cancer cells in the same pelvic region as before she says all cells have been removed and she's begun another round of chemotherapy. >> ovarian cancer is insidious and a sneaky cancer. >> reporter: in december, 2021, evert wa diagnosed with stage one ovarian cancer, the same cancer that took her beloved sister in 2020.

it's 8:26 on this monday morning. firefighters are still on the scene of a fire that destroyed a san francisco duplex. it started a little after 3:00 near the panhandle. masonic right now remains closed. firefighters tell us one person had to jump from the top story in order to escape the flames. that person and another person were sent to the hospital. so far we don't know what their condition is, and firefighters tell us that though there was some sort of construction happening at that duplex, they don't know how the fire started. meteorologist kari hall is here with a look at the forecast. maybe a little king tide. >> having to watch those low lying areas as we get higher than normal tides over the next couple of days, and we're still enjoying sunshine. highs headed to the low to mid-60 sz. it's going to be a chilly start but overall a mild day. over the next few days we see the weather on repeat with sunny

i find this to be so fascinating, the research you do it is not just about looks you are kind of doing an impression. >> yes, yes. i guess it is about, yeah, finding a kind of essence, i think. but, yeah, we work with movement coaches and a dialect coach. one of the things i did is i met with a marine who taught me how to march it is not -- the show doesn't cover any kind of military period but like you said, it is about these people hold themselves in a certain way and kind of understanding that kind of sense of duty. >> yeah. for those of us that aren't actors, we don't know how much goes into it. >> so much. >> that we never see but we see it in the performance. >> yeah. >> what was the best thing about being on "the crown" >> they have -- there was one scene where they have an actual like home baker that bakes like cakes and things and scones and stuff. >> why is it always about food
