roads, aaa saying a majority of people heading out for holidays more than 100 million in all are expected to drive, if you're one of them be sure to give yourself extra time, flood-covered streets in california. bill karins is tracking the rain but let's start with marissa at the miami airport for us. marissa, how is it looking out there? >> reporter: yeah, i want to start first actually what driving conditions are looking like how the majority of people travel across all of holidays, we have the best and worst times to travel by road. one of the 103 million taking to the roads over the holiday season, the wrs, the busiest time to travel, saturday, 11:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m. and next thursday, 2:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. the best times are to avoid those times. in terms of the flights, of course, we're at miami international, they just broke a record on sunday for passenger

thunderstorm up interstate 5, you can see this off the ocean here, this has been coming straight from the south due north right into santa barbara, one spot reported over an inch and a half of rain in one hour, rainfall rates like that you're almost guaranteed you're going to have flash flooding problems. san diego, oceanside, everyone has a shot of getting an inch or two inches, rainfall totals 2 to 5, we'll get somewhere probably in santa barbara county close to a foot of rain when this is all said and done. as our storm goes from southern california into arizona, possibility of delays and isolated cancellations at l.a.x. down to san diego, sky harbor in phoenix same for you but friday into saturday. some rain and then high elevation snow, minor delays there in seattle, and as far as the interstates go, we don't

have enough cold air for a lot of issues with snowy travel but eventually heading up around flagstaff and utah saturday we'll have some snow to deal with. >> thanks, bill. marissa, appreciate it breaking news, police say at least 15 people were shot and killed by a student at a prague university and right now nearly 25 others are hurt. the gunman opened fire earlier today at charles university, the campus is located in a busy area right in the middle of the city, just take a look at this picture that was captured from inside one of the classrooms as this was happening. . you can see that door barricaded with chairs and desks. molly hunter is following the latest developments for us. molly, investigators just released new details about the suspected gunman and the victims. what can you tell us now. >> reporter: there was just a press conference with the police, with the interior minister who walked us through a time line of events. how rare and unprecedented this is in the czech republic. we know from police that the

shooter, a single shooter they say, a male 24-year-old student at charles university, and as you just showed our audience on a map, charles university one of the largest oldest university in prague, we can see in this video that our audience is looking at right now just how busy it might have been four days before christmas, 46,000 students normally go to this university, we're trying to figure out how many were on campus, certainly classes in session because police got on the scene within minutes after they learned of the shooting, they learned of the shooting at 2:59, they said police were on the scene within minutes. a s.w.a.t. team was on the scene in 12 minutes, they were nearby and ready. the shooter was found dead at 3:20, just about 20 minutes into the attack, now it's unclear and they've not released details about how exactly the shooter died, they do say there was a gun fight, as far as motive that's one of the big questions right now, no connection to

international terrorism, but police are very clear that this was a premeditated violent attack, we should learn more in the coming hours. >> molly hunter, thank you. the israel/hamas war has reached a somber new milestone an estimated 20,000 people have been killed in gaza since october 7th, that's according to hamas-run gaza health ministry. today, hamas said palestinian leaders will not negotiate at all until the fighting stops. jay gray is live in jerusalem for us. jay, i want to pause here and sit on this number, 20,000 people dead in less than three months, can you just help put that in context for our viewers? >> reporter: yes, it's a difficult thing to get some perspective on, it's an overwhelming number. it's 260 or more people killed every day since this war began,

1% of the spire population in the territory has died in 2.5 months and more than 70% of those who have died have been women and children. we should talk about the fact that we are losing people in gaza not only to bombs and bullets, but a lack of food and water, starvation, dehydration causing serious problems and leading to death now according to many who are watching this situation very closely, the u.n. now saying that people in gaza are getting less than a meal a day and that number is dropping because of a lack of supplies, food and water and basic necessity there is. >> jay, you spoke exclusively with a 13-year-old american citizen in the west bank, his family said he was shot and detained by israeli forces there on november 1st, he was released from prison just this morning. tell us more about his story.

>> reporter: yeah, this young man malik was walking home after playing socker with friends at a school ground where he said he was shot by an israeli soldier. it was about a month later when soldiers showed up at the family home, in the middle of the night and moved in took him for an interrogation and eventually he spent at least a week in prison and his mom talked to us about the impact it's having. >> he's worried, he said there's going to be constant worry that they'll come back and take him. and how his life would be when he's inside. >> reporter: yeah, and we talked to malik who said he's still concerned about going out, hanging out with his friends and doing things that normal 13-year-olds do. he pointed out that things aren't normal in west bank, to

despite the strong economy right now, many americans are still going hungry. while unemployment is low and wages are rising inflation and piring snap benefits have led more and more people to turn to food banks. according to food and friends a local d.c. food bank 44% of their recipients say the meals they get from food and friends are their only source of

nourishment. shannon, this is not a new issue, right, more than 44 million people in the united states experience hungry each and every day, but it does seem to have gotten worse, why are so many people in america going hungry right now and what organizations like the one you're at doing to help. >> reporter: this organization are being really stretched. they'll produce about 200 meals this year, double the number of meals they were providing before the pandemic. and they say that during this holiday season they're seeing record demand for things like thanksgiving meals, presents parents can give their children, and they say there's a number of factors here, inflation being key to that, food prices remain about 25% above where they were before the pandemic. and i talked to the executive director of this group, here's a little bit more what she had to say about what you're seeing. >> we know inflation is real. the cost of food has increased a lot of other food assistance

programs that were present during covid have sun setted. we're the only option for people who are sick. >> reporter: and i talked to one woman who gets here meals from here, her name is donna lawson, she was an educator for 20 years, she worked as a principal and administrator in virginia schools but she's no longer able to work because of health condition and she said if it wasn't for this organization she would go hungry. here's what she has to say. >> i receive snap benefits, but the benefits and i'm very grateful for them, don't last an entire month of grocery shopping and so the delivery of food and friends supplement the foods i need to eat. >> reporter: and i'd just add in addition to this rising demand, nonprofit organizations saying they're seeing a decrease in number of volunteers and the amount of donations they're

receiving even as their own costs continue to rise, just another pressure point for these groups. >> an important thing to highlight. people can go out, support and volunteer as holiday shopping season enters the home stretch people seem to be feeling pretty jolly about the economy, the consumer price index rose to 110, the highest number since july. here to explain the numbers is christine romans joins us me now. how does the board come up with this number and what's behind this confidence from consumers if. >> reporter: their future wages, their personal finances, how they perceive the availability of jobs and what they feel about inflation and where inflation will be in the year ahead the inflation expectations, and on all those fronts this survey found that people are feeling better about things, the best

since july and that matches the best in up can of years, this sort of surprised me the context of what shannon reported, 20% of america is always living in recession. then you talk about the doom and gloom of the past year, this never ending recession watch. people have felt pretty negative about the economy, so these numbers come and show us maybe, just maybe all that negativity is breaking ending on a high, i want to dig into this disparity that you highlighted. we heard from shannon, lot of americans are feeling it right now, so many can't even feed themselves, their families, how do you explain what seems to be tale of two economist. >> it's so fascinating. they feel like inflation is going to continue to taper off next year, jobs are pretty available, they're feeling better about things, inside these numbers, confidence among all the groups rose, but rose

lockdown as a precaution. they believe the suspect has fled the area and there's no immediate threat to public safety right now. we have more sad news that's developing at this moment. a gunman on the loose after they shot and killed a pizza delivery driver in oaklee. the victim was sitting in his car. bob redell is breaking down what investigators are revealing. >> reporter: the chief of the police department tells us the investigations unit is making this the top priority. they are asking for the public ace help in trying to solve this crime. someone shot the pizza delivery driver as he sat in front of his family's home not far from vintage parkway elementary school. the driver who worked for domino's was 24 years old, was on break when police say just before 5:00 last night, another car pulled up alongside him and a passenger in that car shot at him, close range, multiple times before driving off. the man's mother told police she saw it happen.

this week, even day has marked by new daily records of migrants both crossing the southern border and landing in custody, the federal government is struggling to keep up. customs and border protection is holding about 27,000 migrants in processing facilities as of yesterday, president biden spoke with mexico's president about the issue earlier today. nbc news homeland security correspondent julia ainsley joins me now. first, give us some perspective here, how is cbp operating now and what are your sources saying about this historic rise of migrants? >> reporter: when you look at the fact that cbp is seeing a record number of migrants, they've been at a record high for three days in a row, they broke the record of 12,000, maintained that, now on 27,000 migrants in cbp custody, when we got to 20,000 in 2019 under the trump administration, migrants were there for weeks and

couldn't lie down to sleep because they were so overcrowded. because of technology they're able to hold people past 72 hours. but tragedy comes after that, migrants are being released on the streets without being taken to nonprofits and some don't know where they're supposed to go even though cbp does to coordinate with the cities where they're released. that's happening in tucson, arizona, area and eagle pass, texas, even though they're scrambling as fast as hey can to release migrants, there are still thousands who remain in the field many of them crowded under a bridge just waiting for the cbp to take them in. people can give your different reasons. lower on funds because of these record highs. another reason sometimes migrants say they're worried about a future republican administration or a future trump administration that might be harder, but i will say typically around christmas these numbers

are lower but now they're at record highs. >> the partisan split over this issue, right, for the first time this week texas republican governor abbott actually flew migrants from his state of texas on a plane to chicago, and over the past year we've seen busing of tens of thousands of migrants to chicago and other u.s. cities like new york, so what's the governor's reasoning here and what is life like for these migrants once they relocated to these cities? they're reorienting to the space. >> reporter: abbott said since he began this in the summer of 2022 this is about taking the problems of border states and putting them on the front doors of democratic-run cities. chicago now being one of those epicenters where migrants aren't just being bussed by flown. they have a public health problem on their hand. lot of people sleeping on the floors of police stations, outside police stations and in

tents and parks now they've seen an outbreak of chickenpox and they're worried about respiratory infections particularly among my grant children. unrelated to that 5-year-old migrant who just died in chicago near a police station when the child suddenly became very ill and they could not get to this little boy before he died at the scene. but what we're told that was separate from some of those health issues they're seeing there, bottom line, these cities are struggling as these numbers continue to rise. >> clearly these issues are interconnected, health. 2023 the year of weight loss drugs, treatments have been become household names now, what does the market look like heading into 2024? demand for these drugs is

refusing to cut his hair. i sat down with the teenager to hear why he's fighting back. for darryl george just outside of houston, texas, hair has defined his junior year of high school. how has this felt for you? >> very stressful. i'm trying to maintain being a student while also having to deal with this. >> reporter: the 18-year-old has been suspended twice over his hairstyle at high school. most recently in early december. the first time was in august, they said the braided locks fell below his ear lobe. >> why should i cut my hair, my hair has nothing to do with my education. >> reporter: george was put in a disciplinary off-campus education program. when he returned to school with the style intact, he was suspend ed again. the family filing a civil rights lawsuit against texas governor abbott and the state attorney general, alleging george's suspension violates the crown

act that took effect january 1st, banning employers and schools from penalizing them for their hair texture or hairstyles. at least 24 states have their own version of the law according to the think tank the economic policy institute. much of the legislation following high-profile incidents of alleged hair discrimination against african americans. >> we're alleging that the grooming code of the school is unconstitutional, the law says whether or not you intend to target a specific protected class, if the end result is only that the protected class is affected is discriminatory. >> reporter: george's attorney said the district is engaging in a discriminatory pattern. back in 2020, two other students both black teens were also suspended for their hairstyles. in response, the school district tells nbc news in part the claim is false. saying, it has many african

american students who wear dreadlocks and other similar protected hairstyles and comply with the district's length policy, we have one who does not. the superintendent adding that there are some african american students with religious exemptions for hair length. the superintendent also calling the lawsuit baseless and filing a lawsuit to clarify that the crown act doesn't address length or any other student expression but instead protects the right to wear braids. texas governor's and attorney general's office didn't respond to our request for comment. as for darryl george his attorney said this legal battle has taken its toll. >> i feel like i'm going nowhere with it as of right now. >> reporter: his family representative telling us many have encouraged the teenager to cut his hair and let the case go. >> darryl has hair that's from his ancestors and this is how he's connected to his
