maine now joining colorado in disqualifying mr. trump, citing his role in the january 6 attack on the capitol although maine's top election official does say her decision will not be enforced until the courts weigh in. the colorado decision has been appealed to the supreme court by the republican party in that state. the trump campaign called the decision in maine atrocious. saying they hwill file a legal objection immediately. several states have declined efforts to block trump from the ballot overnight, california's secretary of state certifica certified that state's ballot and trump was not removed. one candidate is under fire this morning for her comments about the civil war. nikki haley on the defensive for what she said or did not say about the civil war when asked about that war >> reporter: republican presidential candidate nikki haley in cleanup mode, after leaving out slavery as a root cause of the civil war during a

spent 54 days in captivity before being released during the pause in fighting. that's the latest here i'm jay gray, nbc news, jerusalem. the justice department says it will sue texas if it goes forward with a new state law that lets police arrest migrants who cross the border illegally that's according to a letter sent to republican governor greg abbott and obtained by nbc news. the doj says the law is unconstitutional, since immigration enforcement is the job of the federal government, not the individual states. texas now has until wednesday to comply, but the governor's office says the state is, quote, prepared to take this fight all the way to the u.s. supreme court. some hospitality workers in california are closing out the year with one last labor action. hotel employees in pasadena are planning to walk off the job on new year's eve the hospitality union says workers at the hilton and hyatt place have yet to reach an

agreement on a labor deal. it comes the day before pasadena is expected to host massive new year's crowds for both the rose bowl and the tournament of roses parade to the forecast now and some severe weather parts of southern california ordering evacuations this morning along the kohl'coast be of a dang ruerous storm surge. it is flooding entire neighborhoods. water rose so high in ventura county that a man was able to paddleboard through those streets. the high surf warnings continue through tomorrow night and now let's take a look at those maps the most impactful storm to close out 2023 will be the new system pushing into the west coast. it's bringing heavy rain to coastal portions of washington, oregon and northern california seattle, portland and san francisco can all expect wet and windy conditions that could lead to some more flight delays later today. strong winds could also fuel some coastal flood issues, especially for california.

leading the news this morning, san antonio police are asking for help identifying two personing of interest in a potential murder case. this comes as part of the investigation into the death of pregnant savannah soto and her boyfriend. both bodies were found on tuesday. the new video released thursday shows the persons of interest get out of their cars and appear to speak to each other before taking off one of the two figures is driving a silver kia optima. that's the same car that the bodies were found in earlier this week. now to a dramatic confrontation shutting down a major highway in houston for hours. the driver of a semi-truck led police on a slow-speed pursuit on i-10. once they dotgot him to stop th driver refused to get out. eventually a bulletproof vehicle with a battering ram was used to remove him two people are lucky to be alive this morning after their car slid down a steep embankment
