"early today" starts right now. good to be with you this monday. i'm frances rivera. we begin with breaking news. another major escalation in the middle east. three u.s. service members were killed in a drone strike on their base in northeast jordan. more than 30 were injured.

the biden administration is blaming iran-backed michigans for militias. what do we know about what happened? >> reporter: the u.s. central command said the attack happened at a supports logistical support base in the north of jordan, close to the border with syria. where about 350 troops are stationed. they provide support to the coalition in the fight against isis. now two u.s. officials told them that a drone loaded with explosives landed very near where a shelter where soldiers were sleeping, killing three and injuring at least 34. right after the attack, president biden paid tribute to the fallen soldiers. let's take a listen to what he said. >> last night we lost three brave souls in the attack on our

base. i ask for a moment of silence for all three of those fallen soldiers. >> reporter: in a later statement, the president blamed iran-backed militants operating in iraq and syria for the attacks. in a different statement, the islamic r islamic resistance of iraq said that they carried out four attacks against four different targets alongside the jordan/syria border, but it's not clear whether one of those attacks led to the death of those american soldiers. the president also vowed to hold those account, those responsible accountable in the manner and timing of the u.s.' choosing, but some u.s. lawyers are already pressing on the president to target iran for those militants who carried out the atake. among them is lindsey graham who

on his his x account wrote hit iran, hit them now, hit them hard. this is the first time american soldiers are killed since the start of the israel-hamas war in gaza. frances? >> so many questions and so much concern as to what that will look like if that response. claudio, thank you. new this morning, north korea says it tested cruise missiles launched from submarines with kim jong un in attendance during the demonstration. kim also repeated his goal of building a nuclear-armed navy to counter external threats. it comes at a time of heightened tensions after north korea said it would no longer pursue peaceful reunification with the south. secretary lloyd austin had return back to the pentagon today after treatment on january 1st.

he is expected to host general stoltenberg. some lawmakers are calling for his resignation. the homeland security secretary's job is in jeopardy this morning with republicans moving for impeachment of mayorkas. brie jackson joins prusfrom d.c. >> reporter: the house homeland security committee is expected to consider these articles of impeachment tuesday. once approved by the committee, the next step would be a floor vote in the house. the articles accuse mayorkas of not prioritizing detention at the border and for making false statements to congress that the border is secure. texas congressman michael mccaul accused mayorkas of a dereliction of duty. >> i call him the architect of
