the niners hoping to add another big win to their belt. all eyes are turning to a head-to-head battle with the chiefs. the sea of red set to take over las vegas and the gear going on sale here in the bay area today. this is "today in the bay." waking up happy, coming off that big win. monday morning, maybe not so bad after all. 5:00. thanks for starting your day with us. i'm laura garcia. >> i'm marcus washington. what a place to live and be on a monday morning. not only do we have the win from the 49ers, and we have this beautiful weather today, too. >> yes, we're talking about another day with highs in the 70s. >> wow. >> we're really going to take it in. >> winter in california. >> yes, it's going to be really nice today. as we're getting started, temperatures in the upper 40s and 50s. it is 50 in oakland as you head out the door, 51 in san jose, a little cooler for walnut creek. as we take a look at our highs

for today, how about 75 degrees? it's going to be a very nice afternoon. now, we're still in the upper 60s for much of the north bay and san francisco, but a really mild day ahead. we'll talk about rain coming for midweek. mike, you're starting with an alert for the rails. >> the b.a.r.t. alert, x sent out a message saying there's police activity and they've close today balboa park station, there's no service into or out of that station. the trains just go through that station. do note that. we'll give you updates. some sort of police activity. other than that, the b.a.r.t. system itself is not delayed, other than the balboa park area. the roadways are moving smoothly. although 680 out of sunol, there's still a crew that seems to be on the grid. 5:02 right now. just about everyone talking about the remarkable nfc championship win for the 49ers

to clinch that spot in super bowl lviii. had this more ups and downs than the ride at great america. >> the niners will face the chiefs 13 days from now. kris sanchez is here. a closer look at a special reason. >> in case you missed it, the niners were down against the lions for most of the half, so that was kind of hard to choke down. when the niners came back after the half, they erupted, pulling off a comeback that thrilled the home crowd at levi's stadium. they took pictures, they bought merch, they considered new tattoos. that's what they told us, anyway. they started making plans to head to the super bowl in las vegas. now, we did find a couple of people who admitted that maybe for a minute they weren't 100% sure that the niners were going to win. >> of course i was nervous. but when you're at home, you

have 70,000 plus thousand rooting for you, you believe in yourself. >> reporter: that's right, they did believe in themselves and made it happen. the niners will be taking on the kansas city chiefs in a rematch of the 2020 super bowl. the video you're seeing here is from that game. they beat the baltimore ravens, sorry, marcus, 17-10. you do have to root for your birth city. now you can root for your home city. so this will be the chiefs fourth super bowl in five years. the last time the niners went to the super bowl was four years ago. the super bowl is february 11th, or as our less than sporty "today in the bay" teammates say, 13 days until the red team battles the other red team and the usher concert. you don't have to love football. it's about community. it's about getting together and watching together. it's okay if you're just rooting for usher. >> one of our producers said it's a sports ball game. >> he goes, i can't wait for the usher concert. that's okay. >> whatever gets butts in the

seats rooting for the niners, that's fine. >> nbc bay area saw governor gavin newsom also talking to folks on the sideline before the game. the governor later congratulate today 49ers in their win in a post on social media. you way want to brace for a wave of scarlet and red over the next few weeks. some of it appeared just a short time following the niners game. here is a look at the recently relocated sky star wheel over at fisherman's wharf last night and city hall in san francisco lit up as well. about 25 blocks you see right there from our own sky view, city hall there, you see the colors shining bright. other san francisco buildings could be seen lit up in red and gold. sky ranger could see some extreme celebration outside levi's stadium. it's not clear who was setting off these illegal fireworks, but it could be seen for miles. and ahead of our next half hour,

death investigation. a saturday they announced officers were investigating a body found and police say there's no threat to the public but they're asking anyone with information to call detectives. happening today, nine suspects tied to what prosecutors called one of the largest sex trafficking busts in state history are scheduled to return to court. authorities made the arrest last november. they also announced nearly 20 women were rescued in that ring which operating in low budget hotels stretching from between hayward and gilroy. six men, three women are due back in court today for a preliminary hearing, continueed from last week. investigators believe more suspects are still at large. in the south bay, law enforcement is still trying to track down the man who fired a gun at someone over the weekend. investigators are looking for this man, christopher crowell, they say on saturday he shot at someone trying to serve him legal papers, this happened about ten miles west of gilroy.

the victim was not hit and safely got away. the santa clara county sheriff's office says he was barricaded inside his home after the shooting but managed to escape into the park. here is another look at that picture one more time. he is considered arms and dangerous. if you see him, you should call 911. bay area house lawmaker nancy pelosi is facing backlash from u.s. pro-palestinian supporters for comments she made during one of the weekend talk shows. she appeared on cnn's sunday morning show, "state of the union" where the host asked us about whether democrats may be losing young voters over the conflict in gaza. pelosi proceeded to question whether some of the recent u.s. protests are truly organic, suggesting calls for a cease-fire were more in line with a message from russia's vladimir putin. here is part of that answer. >> i think some of these protesters are spontaneous and organic and sincere, some i think are connected to russia, and i say that having looked at

this for a long time now. >> you think some of these protests are russian plants? >> i think financing should be investigated and i want to ask the fbi to investigate that. >> the council on american-islamic relations is outraged and calls pelosi's comments a smear, saying calls for a investigation are downright authoritarian. in a follow-up statement, a pelosi spokesperson later told the network pelosi supports the right to peaceful protests but she's also aware of foreign adversaries meddling in american politics to sow division, especially during election years. palestinian supporters including care members are organizing a protest to coincide with the visit from vice president kamala harris. our bob redell will join us with the details on that trip and the rally coming up in a live report in our next half hour. new video showing an unusual

double-header. spacex overnight conducted two falcon 9 launches just a few hours apart, the first from floor's cape canaveral and then from the vandenberg on the coast. take a look at what we have in walnut creek, a nice, dark and early start to your morning. meteorologist kari hall is tracking what will be a nice day for us. >> how many days have we had like this? temperatures in the 60s and 70s, and mostly sunny. great beach day today. we'll also feel those temperatures along the coastline. but tomorrow we are dry, but we will start to turn partly to mostly cloudy as we head into the middle of the week, we're getting ready for rain and wind and flooding will be possible with the next storm that's going to be coming in. we are starting out dry, temperatures in the low 50s, and it's going to warm up very quickly, at noon we're already

record high on friday, the s&p 500 and nasdaq breaking a six-day win streak. the dow rising for a third straight week while the s&p and nasdaq were up for the 12th time in the past 13 weeks. oil prices are rising as tensions escalate in the middle east following the drone attack that killed three u.s. service members in jordan. in focus this week, we get data on consumer confidence, home prices, productivity, manufacturing, and it's all topped off by the jobs report on friday. the federal reserve holds its first meeting of the year, and it's also the busiest week of earnings season, with 20% of the dow and s&p 500 reporting results, including five mega cap tech names, microsoft, alphabet, meta, apple and amazon. united airlines has approached airbus about buying more jets to fill a potential gap left from productions in 737 max 10. the ceo recently flew to france to discuss a potential deal

after the blowout on an alaska 737 max 9 raise t doubts over the certification of the max 10. the company hasn't canceled any orders but has removed them from internal fans. and fossil has called it quits on smart watches. the company announced its getting out of the business and will refocus on less smart products. fossil has been one of the biggest makers of smart watches over the last several years and this means the gen 6 will be the last fossil smart watch, but the company will continue to update software for the next few years, guys. >> it's gone. >> i honestly didn't know they were that big. >> i didn't know they made smart watches. >> i didn't know, either. i know and it's leaving all in the same day. >> maybe that's why they're leaving. >> remember swatches?

>> yes, very well. thanks, silvana. new this morning, scammers are taking advantage of new weight loss drugs and some consumers are losing more than weight. the better business bureau tells us they are seeing a spike in the number of scams on social media targeting people looking to buy ozempic and other similar prescription weight loss drugs. worse, scammers are asking for payment via mobile apps like cash app and zelle. some people reported having video calls with so-called sellers. the consumers end up empty-handed but the scammers gain money and more. >> it is almost near impossible to get your money back, so not only are you out the money, but now these people have access to some of your personal information, depending on what they're asking when you're putting the information in. >> a reminder from the better business bureau, don't buy prescriptions from other countries. if the advertised price seems too good to be true, it probably

weather while we have it. we know things will change eventually. here is a live look at your dry commute across the bay bridge into san francisco. we'll see temperatures starting in the low 50s, in the mid-40s for the tri-valley, and 46 in concord. we're at 51 now in san jose. you can see the temperatures all over the place, and we're going to see highs headed for the mid-70s in san jose, 73 in hayward, dublin and livermore and 71 in concord. mostly upper 60s from napa to novato and 71 today in santa rosa. really nice day tomorrow. it's going to be slightly cooler, but still pretty mild, with a high of 71 in san jose. one of the warmer spots, mostly 60s across much of the rest of the bay area. and wednesday is when the cooldown begins, and that's also when the rain will be arriving. it's another atmospheric river, right now just to our north and affecting much of the pacific northwest. as it starts to dive into northern california and eventually into the bay area at

about 8:00 on wednesday morning, we'll start to see that rain moving in, and just continuing into late wednesday, into thursday, as well as friday there's some rain in the forecast. a brief break before possibly more rain comes in behind that. this initial wave of rain will bring us a fairly high amount of rainfall, falling on an already wet ground. so an inch to two inches of rain will possibly cause some flooding. while we get rain, the center getting snow for at least the next few days. we have decent snowfall totals coming in into the beginning of next week. we could see about two feet of snow for upper elevations. very active storm pattern returning after a couple more dry days. mike, you have an alert on the rails and also you're watching the roads. >> we're continuing with the alert for b.a.r.t. which has the balboa park station closed. we just got word there's an investigation because of what's going on, but it sounds like they're able to single track

today is the day you can start filing your federal income tax forms. >> consumer investigator chris chmura's team gathered up quick tips to help make filing less taxing. >> good morning. first off, you don't have to pay anyone to file your tax return. the irs website has free electronic forms you can fill out and file at no charge. now, you have to do the math yourself, but you can file those forms faster than paper and they are free. good news, the irs expects to deliver most families' refunds pretty quickly, within 21 days. one exception, if you claim the earned income tax credit and additional child tax credit, you'll have to wait until february 27th for your money. for everyone else, expect your refund within 21 days of filing. more good tax news.

championship merchandise officially kicks into high gear. we're live as fans hope to cash in on the niners victory ahead of their big show down in las vegas. this is "today in the bay." >> might have to go shopping. >> that we will. magnificent monday morning to us all. good morning. i'm marcus washington. >> i'm laura garcia. let's start with a look at the forecast. we're all happy this monday morning and the weather is cooperating as well. >> it's going to be another really nice day. temperatures in the 70s and sunshine. we're starting out with a little bit of a chill in the air, not too much with our temperatures in the mid-40s. in walnut creek it is 50 in oakland and 51 in san jose. as we take a look at what to expect going into the afternoon, morgan hill will continue on with that sunshine going from low 50s to low 70s for today. and up to 75 in san jose and los gatos. we'll see mostly upper 60s for the inland east bay, as well as

the north bay. mike, you're getting word the balboa park station has reopened. >> we're in recovery mode. trains are running through and stopping at the station. folks can enter the station. balboa station has opened after earlier police activity. there should be a potential delay at most of no more than 15 minutes, but we're looking for updates. as we look at the roadways, smooth drive. the bay bridge toll plaza has a good amount of traffic but it's flowing smoothly. celebrating the niners berth in the super bowl. we are heading back to the big game for the second time in five seasons. >> and they're doing it after a big comeback against detroit lions. faithful really packed the place for yesterday's nfc championship game. things kind of got off to a rocky start. i was a little nervous. the niners were down 24-10 at halftime. but a lucky -- i thought it was

17. the lucky bounce on brandon aiyuk helped shift the momentum and a touchdown just a few plays later. after a lions fumble, the niners were quickly back in business. christian mccaffrey touchdown run tied up the game. in the fourth quarter, elijah mitchell gave the niners a ten-point lead. niners won 34-31, coming from 17 down to match the largest comeback in an nfc championship game. >> man, it's amazing. so many people involved in this, the journey, the ups and downs. >> to see the clock hit zero and you're up, it's special to all of us. obviously we have one more, the job is not finished. but i can't tell you guys how proud i am of the team. >> i'm happy for purdy, too. >> me, too. >> 13 days from now, the niners will play in a rematch of their last super bowl game. they'll take on the kansas city chiefs in las vegas.

you can see the merchandise laid out here. i'm sticking to the youth section because it's a little less expensive than the adult t-shirts there. but they're all lined up ready to go. some of the merch already made it into the stores as of last night here at dick's in daly city. they already had some of this nfc champions, the t-shirts, the long sleeve shirts, these beanies. they reopened to accommodate a line of people waiting to get their new merchandise. the store said they had about 1,000 shirts last night, and people left their watch parties early and headed to buy nfc champions gear immediately. lines and crowds could be seen at the team store over in levi's stadium, as soon as the game was over the fans headed straight there. now, last night most everywhere you looked in san francisco, the faithful were wearing red and gold on the streets at the watch parties, like this one at

momo's, where outside seating and viewing areas were filled to the brim. at least one other bar had to start turning people away at 2:00 p.m. because they were already filled to capacity. the excitement and energy only grew as the niners pulled off their incredible come-from-behind victory. >> it's everything to me. it is literally everything to me, and i just -- the city deserves this and i'm just so happy that we won! >> there's no fans like ours. we have the best fan base, we have the best residents here in san francisco. people talk bad about san francisco, but this is the best city to be in. we love it here. >> reporter: got to love that san francisco pride. now, after the game fans celebrated in the mission, sky ranger spotted this crowd celebrating just what it means to be faithful to the niners. guys, i was already told that i

>> reporter: correct, a protest is planned for later this morning. later this morning vice president kamala harris will fly from los angeles to san jose, land here, and the council on islamic relations and other activist groups have organized a protest outside the mexican heritage plaza to call on vice president harris and president joe biden to pressure israel to do an immediate cease-fire in gaza. this moderated conversation on abortion with the department of health and human services secretary becerra, and there's also a famous actress that will be part of vp harris' fight for reproductive freedoms. harris' office says she is highlighting the harm caused by extreme abortion bans and restrictions that some states have put into effect after the supreme court overturned roe v. wade. now, the vice president will

project meant to boost safety for pedestrians and bicyclists. these are renderings for the 14th safety project. the project is expected to take about 18 months to complete. today's groundbreaking is scheduled for noon at frank ogawa plaza. taking a look outside, beautiful start, dark and early. meteorologist kari hall has a look at what we can expect, sunshine across the bay area, i understand. >> sunshine and warm temperatures. it's going to be a really nice start to our week as we take a live look outside in san francisco. we've seen in some of our inland areas some patchy fog, but overall we are looking at a clear start to the day and temperatures in the low 50s in san francisco. it will lead us to upper 60s as we get a few more clouds mixing in. a look at our highs, hayward hitting a high of 73 degrees, 69 in oakland and in napa, and

we'll see a high of 71 today in santa rosa. we'll talk more about the timeline of the rain we're expecting. you're seeing delays building. >> a couple of key delays. over here we know about san jose, typically slow, 101 around oakland road. a smooth build for the east bay, but a little slowing through hayward, more than we've seen over the past few weeks. we have a minor delay perhaps for the line going through balboa station, but the station has reopened. that's great news. there's slowing into the city now on the span, but especially at the bay bridge toll plaza. we'll show that thank you in the coming report. i'll tell you, the toll plaza suddenly filled in all the way to the back of the parking lot, just as the metering lights were turned on. i'm checking for incidents. and also watching here, tiburon at stewart, watch for 131 because there will be repair work during the day today starting at 7:00 a.m. there will be some traffic controls through the area. back to you. >> thanks, mike. 5:41.

good monday morning. the time is 5:44. we're taking a look at our day planner for cupertino, in the low 50s this morning. and it does start out mostly sunny, but eventually high clouds will start to move in. we're headed for the low 70s today. we'll get a look at our microclimates and incoming rain for the middle of the week in a few minutes. all lanes at the bay bridge also show a big backup, forming very quickly at the toll plaza. the metering lights activated as there's a lot of slowing on the span. but those hov lanes are moving, that means there's no crash, at least not near the toll plaza. we're going to check on the wider shot and let you know what we find coming up. three american soldiers are dead following a drone attack on

that off and put on the shades, because it's going to be a nice afternoon. we're right now in the mid-40s in livermore, 50 in oakland and 45 in sonoma as you're heading out the door. we're going from 40s and low 50s to near record high temperatures for today. in santa rosa, if we make it up to our forecast high of 71, that would beat the old record of 70 degrees set in 2015. you can see what we're expecting for today, and we know it's not supposed to be this warm, but it is nice to get a little treat here and there. livermore will hit a high most likely of 75, which would break the old record of 69 set back in 1931. some of these are long-standing records. as we head into the middle of the week, we'll see rain and wind coming in, much cooler temperatures, and we'll have the potential of flood watches, along with gusty winds, 30 to 45-mile-per-hour winds and heavy rain from wednesday afternoon to thursday. here is the system coming in.

another atmospheric river that is to our north. it just kind of waves up and down the coastline, it connects to that moisture coming from hawaii and it just brings it in with some heavy rain, it enhances the amount of rainfall we see, and it looks like it's going to linger for at least 24 to 48 hours when it does arrive. we're looking at the possibility of some high rainfall totals, at least an inch, but it could be as high as over 2 to 3 inches for the north bay in some of our coastal areas. so once again, the threat of flooding and some gusty winds coming after the next couple of days. so enjoy the sunshine while we have it. we know things will be changing. mike, you're starting with a sudden backup at the bay bridge. >> it filled in, the toll plaza, very quickly. we see the hov lanes are moving well, so traffic is flowing. i think they turned on the metering lights a little slower because there was sudden slowing across the span as well. no incidents that i've seen or observed any issues as far as the flow, but it is there. that's the congestion point. aside from that, pretty typical build for the rest of the east
