6:00 am
breaking news right now at 6:00, an overnight fire engulfs an east bay home with multiple people inside. new details from firefighters while you were sleeping, including word of hospitalizations. the race to prepare for the next storm, from flooding to fallen trees. we're live with the latest on the bay area cleanup already under way. and the countdown is on for super bowl lviii in las vegas.
6:01 am
niners fans, listen up, prices for tickets are dropping. but it won't last long. advice from one expert if you want to catch the game live. "today in the bay" starts right now. we're keeping things going. we started at 5:00 this morning. thanks for making us a part of your morning. i'm marcus washington. >> i'm laura garcia. we begin with breaking news in contra costa county, where an overnight fire sent two people to the hospital. we have a live look at temple drive in pacheco. you can see firefighters have cleared the scene so far. the fire actually started a little before midnight. flames quickly engulfing the home. still no word on the victims' injuries or how they're doing. firefighters also say two other people inside the home made it out safely. "today in the bay"'s ginger conejero saab is there live this morning. she'll join us with a live report in our next half hour, including new details about what
6:02 am
may have kept the situation from being far worse. the first storm is gone, but another heading our way. we have team coverage ahead this weekend with the downpour. kris is live for us this morning in the south bay where residents are rushing to clean up. let's head over to meteorologist kari hall, leading our coverage this morning. >> we're starting out with off and on rain, really not much of a big break here, as we get run atmospheric river that has already pushed through with another one on the way. so here is a look at the motion of the rain that keeps coming in off of the coast and into the inland areas. we are seeing some showers moving through marin county into san francisco, and then we're seeing it also pushing across the bay into contra costa county. but there's also more rain coming over the santa cruz mountains, and where we get these pockets of downpours, it creates very low visibility, as you're driving, more puddles on the roadways and making things slick for the morning commute. we have a bit of a break in san jose, but it was raining earlier
6:03 am
this morning and there's more rain coming over the santa cruz mountains closer to los gatos, and that's the kind of activity we'll see throughout the morning. there looks to be a break for today, but really at any point as you see these little isolated showers moving through, there could be some rain and much more coming tomorrow as well as sunday. so i'll be tracking all of that for you in the microclimate forecast coming up in a few minutes. >> thank you, kari. cleanup continues in some bay area neighborhoods following the latest storm. a massive tree which fell onto power lines in los altos was picked up overnight. >> "today in the bay"'s kris sanchez joins us live in mountain view. there's concerns we could see more trees falling because the soil is so saturated. >> reporter: right, and this is going to be a very busy day of not only getting prepared for the next round of rain that kari is forecasting, but also cleaning up after this one. and what happened in los altos last night is a good reminder of the importance of being prepared. in this neighborhood, this tree
6:04 am
fell down on camellia way and took out power lines and damaged a six inch water main, leaving some of the neighborhoods there without power and water for a while. so if you have a moment, take the time to make sure you have fresh batteries in your flashlights and snacks and water set aside. you'll want to take some time to look at the trees outside where you live. >> because of the recent storms, the soil is at maximum field capacity, which means it is holding all the water it can possibly hold. so the new storms, the water has nowhere to go. >> reporter: all right, so here is what the arborist tells us to look for, dead or falling branches, missing bark, pay attention to the roots near water which can erode the soil, and if you see fungus on the roots, that's a sign of decay. cracked or raised soil are also a sign the tree could be leaning and is at risk of falling.
6:05 am
major cracks in the trunk could tell you the tree is compromised. pg&e tells us they are keeping an eye on trees, especially in the santa cruz mountains and the peninsula, based on their weather predictions. they match up with what kari is saying. they also warn we could see rocks or even landslides in super saturated areas. speaking of super saturated, take a look at my back yard yesterday, in the afternoon we got a burst of really heavy rain and really cold hail, and in just about six minutes' time, we went from all of that water draining okay to being flooded. so just a really strong burst of energy and kari had warned us that was going to happen. the french drain was overwhelmed because there was so much water at one time. be careful on the roadways, because when the water has nowhere to go, it ponds and makes for a dangerous drive and also that water is icky, so maybe don't let the kids play in it. as the rain continues, our
6:06 am
nbc bay area app is a great resource. it uses our stormranger to track it all, giving you the most accurate radar in the bay area. you can get alerts sent straight to your phone and customize them for your neighborhood. let's get a check of the roads, speaking of traffic, with mike inouye. >> the camera has been turned toward the bay bridge toll plaza and you can see the backup here. you can also see the roadways are damp, wet in other places. i say wet, meaning there's more water and it's slicker, so just be careful. we get a good count of all of these lanes, one lane remains closed from the damage which occurred years ago here. we have a smooth drive toward san francisco. just gradually building across the bay. there is one crash on the shoulder at berkeley off the eastshore freeway and a mild build for highway 37. that's friday lighter traffic. but the green shows you, again, those tougher conditions for some drivers, slicker conditions. so do lower those speeds even though you can go at the limit, only go as quickly as those
6:07 am
conditions allow. we do have a new incident in is south bay, 101, right around oakland road. i'll check on that. >> thank you very much. happening today, two south bay daycare workers charged in the deaths of two toddlers in their care are scheduled to appear in court. through their attorneys, they're talking about the tragedy. it all unfolded last october at the happy happy daycare in san jose. two toddlers drowned in a swimming pool after investigators say a fence had been propped open and the children were left unsupervised. a third child fell in the pool but survived. the women are now facing child endangerment charges. they have not yet entered a plea, but through their lawyers they released a statement to the mercury news. it says, in part, they recognize their own sorrow is only a fraction of the unimaginable loss suffered by the bereaved parents. no word from our clients can alleviate the profound suffering of the affected families, but they extend their deepest sympathies during this incredibly tough time.
6:08 am
new at 6:00, san francisco transit leaders are taking the next steps and rethinking what many call an unpopular move to create a protected bike lane on valencia street in the mission district. this follows a slew of complaints from residents in the months since the decision was made as part of a pilot program last august when the nta created a bike lane in the middle of the street, blocking out parking spaces for businesses in the neighborhood and they relied on those. now other options are being considered and requested. leaders are promising to present an initial assessment of the project two weeks from now. it's soggy out there. new this morning, you're waking up to the prediction of an early spring. earlier this morning groundhog punxsutawney phil did not see his shadow. as usual, thousands packed today's event in pennsylvania, and it may mean six more weeks of winter off the table. or does it? one new only sis of phil's forecast shows a coin toss would be more accurate.
6:09 am
noaa weather data finds phil really only gets it right 40% of the time, and hardly ever for the western united states. another group, climate central, finds that phil predicted an early spring every year, he would be twice as accurate. poor little phil. >> just flip the coin. when you think about it, for the west coast, it is fairly mild. so what is an early spring for us? >> that's true. >> we rely on meteorologist kari hall. >> and we have a lot of atmospheric rivers coming in. this is very typical of february. we're seeing the waves of rain coming in. and so today is actually our break from some of the heavier rain that we have ahead. and we're going to still have a soggy morning commute, but it does look like things could improve a bit for the evening commute. off and on rain now for san francisco, it's moving across the bay over toward hayward, union city, and moving closer to dublin as well as it continues to move off toward the east.
6:10 am
for san jose, there's a break now, but still raining in gilroy where it's going to be tapering off soon. we can see there's rain over the santa cruz mountains that will be moving in soon. if you're heading out the door in fremont, grab the umbrella. even though we are seeing some waves of showers, there will be a break late morning with peeks of sunshine, but still a chance of rain for noon into 1:00, and our temperatures today will be chilly. so grab the heavier jacket along with that umbrella. we'll be tracking the next round of rain with details in a few minutes. mike, you were checking in on a crash in san jose. it appeared on the map where we typically see the slowing. you see the traffic moves slowly but the water kicks up as you drive by, as cars drive by. so do use caution. the good news is no major injuries reported and it's on oakland road just off the freeway around commercial. i think it's around the coca-cola area, the plant might not be on that specific roadway. we are looking at the green highlighting. slicker conditions, a light
6:11 am
build, but still watch the traction. >> thanks, mike. want to catch the niners in sin city? super bowl prices are said to be going down. coming up next, the way you can catch a deal for the big game before it's too late. if you have shares in facebook, maybe you can afford it. the company made an old-school decision that turned into a lot of money. let's go to the futures this morning. wall street reacting to, what else, but a blockbuster jobs
6:13 am
two leading candidates for senate. two very different visions for california. steve garvey, the leading republican, is too conservative for california. he voted for trump twice and supported republicans for years, including far right conservatives. adam schiff, the leading democrat, defended democracy against trump and the insurrectionists. he helped build affordable housing, lower drug costs, and bring good jobs back home. the choice is clear. i'm adam schiff, and i approve this message.
6:14 am
good friday morning. let's take a live look outside in san jose where we can see some breaks in the clouds as we get ready to approach our sunrise this morning. we do have a chance of some sunshine going into today, but it's going to be cool and a chance of rain at any point. you can see it coming up at 1:00 this afternoon. we will see more unsettled weather ahead of the next atmospheric river. details in a few minutes. and it's really location dependent, as kari keeps telling us. we're looking at the san mateo bridge, a lot more activity than the downtown camera showed us. mist, drizzle, water kicking up and slicker roadways across 92. we're picking up the volume here. there may be a new issue as you get toward san francisco.
6:15 am
we'll talk about that coming up. good morning. very happy friday to you. apple ships its vision pro headset today. tesla updating more than 2 million of its cars with a software update. they call it a recall, but of course tesla can do this over the air. government regulators say the warning lights need to be bigger, and when you have a screen for a dashboard and a dashboard for a screen, you can do that overnight. jobs friday, more about that in a minute. shares in meta, facebook jumping 14%, after that company reported big profits, biggest quarterly sales in a year. stock buyback and a dividend. years ago a high-tech company would have been embarrassed to provide a dividend. a dividend, a payout to shareholders, usually quarterly, was something widows and orphan stock did, like general electric or exxonmobil. old, musty companies that didn't plow their profits back into getting bigger because they didn't have to. facebook now one of those
6:16 am
old-school companies. mark zuckerberg had a rough wednesday. he was the target of so many senators of the judiciary committee meeting, but his week ended nicely. the jump in stock earned him billions and he'll make $700 million a year on that new dividend. it's jobs friday. you know how this drill goes. economists estimate some number, this month it was 180,000, they figured jobs added in january. and then the jobs number is released and we find out how badly they missed their estimate and wonder why they're economists. so they figured 180,000, the real number 353,000. 353,000 jobs added in the month of january. this is a red hot, smoking economy. they figured the unemployment rate would go up and it didn't. i know, we keep talking about silicon valley layoffs, those are so discouraging. zoom just laid off again. but on the macroeconomic level,
6:17 am
the economy is a freight train. the downside to this, the fed may look at this good news and think maybe we don't need to cut rates after all. amazon is updating your amazon app to add rufus, an ai that can help you shop. you ask rufus about various products or ask him to compare the product or summarize reviews. in this example, helping you find a new coffeemaker. the future is probably coming that if you trust this ai enough, you can just say, hey, rufus, get me a new coffeemaker and make it in black that will fit under my countertop that serves 12, based on good reviews, and rufus will go, okay, i just bought it for you, and you'll trust it enough, hopefully. not even look at what it is. >> a partner you never knew you needed. >> thanks, scott. a week from sunday, all eyes will be fixed on las vegas when the niners face the chiefs in super bowl lviii. getting to the big game may come at a big cost for your bank
6:18 am
account. >> joining us live is nbc national correspondent noah pransky, and, all right, noah, i want to get right down to it because the fans want to know, are the prices dropping for the tickets? >> right after the niners punched their ticket, prices were hovering around $9,000 for the cheapest ticket in vegas. you may not want to refer to that as cheap. $10 grand was the price to get in the door. the prices have come down and you can get prices for $8 grand right now. prices are dropping a little as the week goes on. >> the story obviously hits home for us because our niners are facing this rematch with the chiefs. any tips you can give a faithful fan looking to snag a deal? >> so the prediction is that supply and demand will hit equilibrium this weekend. normally for a lot of big events you can deep discounts on the
6:19 am
secondary market at the last minute. because this is so big, it's in las vegas, where so many people show up for the super bowl, we don't expect last-minute discounts. so if you want the best prices, probably this weekend. when you're shopping around, make sure to toggle in all in prices, that will include the fees charged so you don't get surprised at checkout. and then, also, make sure you never pay with cash. these days you can go everything online on a credit card so you have a guarantee. if you're going to go to the game or just hang out in vegas, be prepared with good information. >> thank you so much. go niners. >> i heard the hotels, too. >> that's the thing. >> where are you going to stay? >> hopefully you know somebody there. they've got rain in vegas, too. >> it's going to be off and on. a lot of times by the time the storms get past the bay area, it's a little bit weaker for the las vegas area. but there's still that chance that we could see some of the
6:20 am
same storm systems that we are getting here and across southern california. now looking at our water year, are we caught up yet? that's the other thing we have after all of this rain, and we know we have more ahead. for santa rosa, we're over 2 inches above what we typically see for this date for our water year, but we do still need some work in oakland and concord, parts of the east bay still lacking on the rainfall totals, and we are catching up and going above that in san jose, with over an inch above normal. and then we take a look at the storm system that has moved through here and what's coming our way for the weekend. that's the next storm that is developing out in the pacific, and tapping into that subtropical moisture, making it another atmospheric river. we can see there's not much of a break because of all of the moisture that we have just being pulled in off of the ocean and making it into the bay area, with some rain, so scattered showers still a possibility for us for today. and some pockets of rain has
6:21 am
been quit heavy, and we're watching out for the chance of another round of thunderstorms. really pouring right now in hayward, union city, moving toward castro valley. lighter showers elsewhere from san francisco to the peninsula. very heavy rain moving over the santa cruz mountains, and that will be approaching the saratoga area, over toward los gatos. this is what we can expect into the afternoon. a little bit more in the way of some peeks of sunshine, but really at any point we could see some rain today and tomorrow. i know you have some outdoor plans possible, but we are going to see the rain also in the bay area and then becoming more widespread late saturday evening and continuing into sunday, with that next storm that's going to be rolling up from the south. so we're looking at about 4 to 8 inches of rainfall in the coastal mountains, and then about 1 to 3 inches of rainfall expected for the bay area. really gusty winds that could down some trees and cause some power issues, as well as flooding, and landslides
6:22 am
possible. the active storm pattern continues into the middle of next week, and our temperatures stay chilly, so our highs will only reach into the mid to upper 50s, and of course you'll want to keep checking in daily for an update on the storm. mike, you have a crash now just off of the bay bridge? >> also, there's a crash over here getting onto the bay bridge at the bay bridge toll plaza. i just spotted that from our live camera. the backup fills the toll plaza in. the standard shot definitely shows slick roadways. that's standard for a friday. the issue is in the san francisco area, getting off of the bay bridge, it's slow getting onto city streets. we've got a crash marked but it's actually on 101 northbound coming from the opposite direction, up from the peninsula, just before you get to octavia. so watch the activity. it looks like it's wrapping up. the rest of the bay, slick roadways are the concern as the commute starts to build. back to you. >> thank you, mike. celebrating black heritage. ahead here on "today in the bay," we go one-on-one with a bay area professor aiming to
6:23 am
help others spark social change. first, we're moving you forward with our friday morning school shout-out series. this comes courtesy of a fifth grade class in danville. >> this is my fantastic fifth grade class at vista grande elementary in danville. >> good morning, bay area! >> yay, good morning to you as well. we would love to see your students take part. email your video to us at

welcome back. it is 6:25 this morning. as we see challenges of equity and inclusion in our communities, we may be moved to do something but not know where to start. as we discover black heritage this february, we give you a book that could actually serve as a guide for you. so stanford university lecturer leslie ann knoll explains that we first need to know where we ourselves are coming from to then use that experience to think critically and to understand and emphasize where other people might be coming from. this applies to people from communities of color as well as people who want to be allies. >> people just start, you know, that's kind of the idea, that you can make small change, like maybe helping people understand new concepts. one of my students suggested helping her grandmother
6:27 am
understand the use of pronouns, which is different than when her grandmother was young, and that's a small change. or you could be trying to make big change like changing policies or something like that. >> design social change is broken into three parts, building critical awareness, that is recognizing and listening and seeing others, then there's deepening emotional intelligence, that's understanding what it feels like, and considering how your community supports you. then set up the action part. this is envisioning and then designing equitable futures. it is 6:26 right now. we've got a lot more ahead at 6:30, including another storm heading toward the bay area. meteorologist kari hall is tracking one we could see the worst impact. i'm ginger conejero saab in contra costa county. in the last half hour we have received new details about a house fire that has destroyed this home in pacheco.

6:31 am
apple starts selling its apple vision pro in stores, but what are they good for? we'll take a look. this is "today in the bay." good morning to you. thanks for joining us. 6:30 right now. i'm laura garcia. >> i'm marcus washington. the bay area is getting a chance to dry out just a little bit, but not completely. >> that's right. let's start out with meteorologist kari hall in between the back-to-back storms that we're still seeing some of this rainfall as well, and even a funnel cloud in the north bay that's been getting a lot of attention. >> we wanted to take a closer look at the video because it is hard to tell. here is the deal, if it's a circulation that comes out of the cloud but doesn't touch the ground, it's a funnel cloud. if it makes contact with land, it is a tornado. it kind of looks like it's over the water, so we're not sure if it's a water spout. we're waiting for the national weather service to give us some confirmation on exactly if it made contact with the ground and is that land or water.
6:32 am
but we'll continue to watch that and, of course, talk about it. but this is the time of year that we could see that happen, because of the storms that we have coming in. and just keep in mind that california does get tornadoes in the winter especially, when we get all of these storms coming in. so as we take a look at what's going on this morning, we are still getting some waves of rain, with another atmospheric river that's going to be coming in, going toward the end of the weekend. a closer look still shows some rain off and on all across the bay area, and it's going to be a soggy morning commute. we're also going to see at times some pockets of heavy rain and the possibility of some thunderstorms. we will, once again, be tracking all of this as we see more of the impacts of all of this wet weather with the rain ramping back up again and becoming more widespread heading into late saturday and sunday. so more on that coming up in the full microclimate forecast. >> thanks, kari. 6:32 right now. we are following breaking news in contra costa county, where an
6:33 am
intense fire overnight engulfed a home, sending two people to the hospital. >> "today in the bay"'s ginger conejero saab is live for us at the scene this morning. ginger, what have you been able to learn? >> reporter: well, we're hearing a little more from contra costa county fire at this hour, marcus and laura. fire crews are no longer here at the house fire in pacheco. they left before 3:30 this morning. in the last hour, or the last newscast at 5:30, you could see that there was also a fire damage crew that was clearing out the garage, but they have since left. now, take a look at what is left of this house that was just destroyed by this fire. you can see the garage is now boarded up and the entire front of the home is also boarded up. the damage there is clear to be scene. contra costa county fire telling us that this house is a total loss. it is still standing, but very
6:34 am
much destroyed. now, these are the flames that fire crews were fighting last night. there were just intense flames that looked to have engulfed the entire home. a firefighter had to saw open the garage door to vent out the smoke and the fire that was inside the home. another firefighter could also be seen with a saw on top of the roof. now, one neighbor said she heard screaming, she came out to the street and saw the devastation. >> there was flames coming out of the living room window and the door and in the roof on the corner in the front, smoke coming out of the garage area. and there were two women in the driveway crying. they were on their knees crying. >> reporter: the first call came in before 11:30 last night. two adult victims were transported to the hospital. the injury man was airlifted to
6:35 am
uc davis and the injured female was ground transported to john muir. two other people who lived in this home or seemed to have lived in this home, they were not injured and they are safe, according to fire. investigation is still early. as soon as we learn more details, we'll make sure to bring those to you on air and online. back to you guys. >> let's hope those people get the help they need in the hospital. make sure to stick with us on nbc bay area, both on air as well as online, as we continue to follow the latest on this download our free nbc bay area app, that way you can get updates as we send them out. happening today, apple starts shipping its vision pro headset, the first new product in seven years. >> scott mcgrew is with us this morning. they sold out in presale, but people should probably hold tight before they sign up for
6:36 am
anything else because they can go to the store and look at them. >> yeah, try them out. so as far as what to expect, whether or not you think these are for you, maybe don't expect much right away. the goggles do a lot, but it's not clear to anyone so far what they have to do to make people buy them. for instance, when the personal computer came out, the sfreet -- spreadsheet was the killer app. what is the killer app on this vision pro? chances are, it hasn't been made yet. the one who will figure out why we need the googles will figure it out when they arrive on their doorstep maybe. we know disney+ added an app that will show movies in 3d. many other companies are offering apps but they're not specialized for the googles. they're just ipad apps with no special features for the vision pro. the vision pro is $3,500.
6:37 am
now, you cannot use them if you cannot see properly without glasses, without prescription inserts. you use the apple store app to measure your face ahead of time so that you can get a proper fit. this is not the first time the company has tried to sell or a company has tried to sell glasses like this. meta had a virtual reality headset. we've got ray bans that are apparently on the market. >> i've seen the ads. >> and google glass had the google thing a couple of years ago. we found this picture of our friend, ben parr, and then the columnist for the wall street journal, joanna stearns. what's funny is that the future headset is on the right and the past is on the left. the google apps didn't do anything. the big question, would you wear these at the office? i dug into my drawer and these are just ski googles. >> they look similar. >> go ahead and put them on tv. >> when my kids were younger, they would probably do that.
6:38 am
>> would you wear these -- you're not going to wear them on tv. mike dukakis said never wear anything on your head. i don't see me wearing these in the office. >> try them on. >> no. you and i have reading glasses. >> and contacts and the works. i'm blind as a bat. thank you very much. well, let's talk about skiing. i could use those googles, because in tahoe it's been actually a slow start to the ski season. boy, are things picking up with the flurries this week. ski resort workers are expecting it to be a very busy weekend. more snow is expected to fall on sunday and monday. caltrans crews will be stationed up and down i-80 and highway 50. crews are advising drivers to be careful, take your time if you are headed up to the sierra. >> when you see them skiing, it looks like so much fun. until you put them on. >> it's a lot of work, too. >> i mean, you definitely need to take a class before you just go down the slopes. >> maybe again.
6:39 am
>> you've got this. come on. >> we should do a road trip. i would love to take you skiing. >> i would love to go. we definitely have the conditions, because we're getting a lot of snow here lately. and we do have more on the way. let's get a look at palisades tahoe. we can see that there's some snow coming down. there's more on the way. temperatures stay below freezing today. we just go up above -- slightly above freezing for tomorrow, with a little bit of some rain mixed in, but still that chance. and then the next storm comes in on sunday, and ahead of that we are going to see temperatures rising and then dropping once again. and look at all of the snow we have coming in, with the possibility between now and next friday of anywhere from 3 to possibly 4, maybe even 4 1/2 feet of snow over the next several days. very tricky to get there, so maybe you'll be staying at home and enjoying some of the mini celebrations we have in the bay area. take a look at the lunar new year and black history celebration in oakland, that's going to be happening tomorrow. we're looking at temperatures
6:40 am
only in the mid-50s. you do want to keep the umbrella handy, especially for the afternoon, rain chances will be going up. if you're headed down to pebble beach, expect it to be raining off and on and hoois in the mid-50s. it will be chilly and windy, and sunday will be tricky because the next storm will be coming in. for sonoma valley, we're looking at some breaks in the activity for today but highs only reach into the mid-50s. it's going to be cold later tonight. and tomorrow we also will keep those rain chances in the forecast, continuing into sunday. mike, you're looking at some tougher conditions on the san mateo bridge. over the last few minutes we saw a lot more water on the lens, kicking up, and brake lights tapping, as i would imagine some folks were surprised by something on their windshield call rain. kari has been warning us about that. you're all right as far as the spacing on the bridge. there's more traffic, a little bit more brake tapping going on. traffic feeding off the east bay, the green highlighting, both sides, all sides of the
6:41 am
