it's going to look like tonight. you remember california in 2020 switched to all mail-in balloting. you'll see a lot of this. while everyone is out right now and the processing isn't happening the machines you see behind this chain-link fence are mail sort processing machines. a little bit about what the process is here, they'll count those ballots not just all night long, they've been counting them already in order to determine who ultimately wins. the reason why orange county is so important it used to be republican through and through here. ronald reagan cleaned house when he was the governor here. but things have shifted over time. what will happen tonight, i don't know if you can see them, they'll come up and over and

we're learning new details about a massive explosion that rocked a michigan suburb. that killed a teenager who was just walking by. that blast happened last night about 20 miles outside of downtown detroit. investigators say the explosion caused gas canisters to shoot out of the building and fall from the sky as far as a mile away, that's what killed a 19-year-old man. adrienne broaddus in clinton township, michigan, for us. what are investigators looking into right now. >> reporter: right now, the big thing is pinpointing what exactly led to the explosion which was followed by that massive fire, which could be seen miles away, you mentioned those canisters being a cause for concern, yes, that's because when they exploded and landed not right here in this area, they landed up to a mile away,

if they still contained gas they could explode and that could cause more problems, so that's a big concern, what started this fire is still unclear. a 19-year-old was killed who was about a quarter and a mile away because investigators said one of those canisters hit him in the head. we spoke with the fire chief a short time ago, he said he heard this before he saw it and he was seven miles away. listen in. >> walking out of our building you could feel -- you could hear it and you're like, please, that's not what we're going to. arrived on scene here at the concussion of the explosions you could feel the shake in your car. >> reporter: we should get an update from city officials in the next 30 minutes or so. we're told that two people were interviewed by authorities. no one has been charged. earlier in the day, firefighters spent most of their time cooling

this is "the fast forward." i'm janelle wang. happy super tuesday, everyone. polls are open across california for the primary election. bob redell joins us from the santa clara registrar of voters office in san jose. >> reporter: in-person voting today in santa clara county at the registrar of voters office has been at a trickle. if you are sitting at home and you haven't registered, you can come here, register to vote, vote. you can also vote by mail. you can drop your ballot off and one of the drop boxes located throughout the county. this is where your ballot will end up, in a room like this. we are in the santa clara registrar of voters office. we are allowed in here. so is the public.

to observe the counting process. transparency is the bedrock of our open, free and fair elections. of course, our democracy. as you walk back here, this is the adjudication room. if there's a question, workers overlook that. these are the machines where they put the ballots in and then the totals are counted, the actual counting takes place in here. as of this morning, the santa clara county registrar's office counted over 170,000 ballots from mail in and early voting. we expect it's higher now since we are a couple hours into the day. turnout is 17%. they are expecting 35% to 40%, which is below expectations. the registrar says that the age group that's lagging are the 18 to 34-year-olds. >> of course, it's disappointing. we want 100%. we want everybody to make a difference. we don't want a small majority

north. it's going to bring a chance for spotty showers, a lot of that staying in through santa rosa, parts of the san francisco stretch as well as through the afternoon. most of us are going to see trace amounts, less than a tenth of an inch. most in the south bay might not get rain. a closer look at your planner for today. in san francisco, expect to see cloudy conditions remain with daytime highs in the upper 50s. we will get sunshine filtering through in san jose as well. daytime highs in the 60s. by 4:00, we will start to see the temperatures go down into the upper 50s, similar conditions for gilroy. >> thanks. here are our highways. major highways in tahoe are open. police in fremont at the scene of a shooting. we are getting details. they were called about two cars exchanging gunfire. the area shut down. police are asking the public to

avoid this area. no other details are being released at this time. it's an all clear after some concerns moments at uc berkeley. the campus alerting everyone that less than 90 minutes ago of a hazardous material being detected at stanley hall. people were being asked to avoid the area. an all clear given moments ago. we are making phone calls trying to find out what led up to this incident. major highways to lake tahoe are back open following blizzard conditions this past weekend. 80 is back open. chain controls through donor summit were dropped. they have been working to clear snows from the highways. it left 11 feet in some areas. resorts are feeling the impact. video from sierra at tahoe. crews digging out several feet of snow. manager says it will be a slow process.

bottom of the hour now, here are some of stories making headlines on "nbc news daily." jury selection has begun in trial of james crumbley the father of a boy who shot and killed four students at a michigan high school in 2021, that boy's mother jennifer crumbley was found guilty in separate trial last month on four counts of involuntary manslaughter.

the first time in u.s. history that a parent was found criminally responsible for a school shooting carried out by their child. james crumbley faces the same charges as his wife. their son has been sentenced to life in prison without parole. the pilot of the plane requested an emergency landing. . the plane couldn't make it. crashing in exto the highway. the faa and the ntsb investigating at the scene. the iconic booth featured in soprans finale sells for 82,600. pretty impressive. especially for a table. the money will mostly go toward putting a new floor and new booths at the diner.

an arizona border check point is taking center stage in the fight against fentanyl. new technology helping to identity drugs in vehicles but an nbc news investigation found that new technology only a fraction of those vehicles are actually being checked by it. nbc homeland security correspondent julia ainsley has been reporting on this story. she joins me now. you visited this border checkpoint. you spoke to officials. what did you find? >> reporter: well, first of all the technology is pretty amazing, kate, they're now able to use a.i. and was able to talk to some of officers behind the scenes watching these shipments come through trying to work for anomalies using new computer technology to scan these vehicles while the drivers stay in the car, that's vastly from where we were five years ago. here's the problem, while 95% of fentanyl is driven across the border in personal vehicles only 2% of vehicles are actually scanned. turns out, according to the head

of cbp, if you try to scan every vehicle. another problem, some of this technology they've purchased they haven't been able to put in the ground. we're on the front lines of the fentanyl crisis. half of all fentanyl seized coming in from mexico is stopped here. but critics say the biden administration is not doing enough. with fentanyl overdoses now the leading cause of death for americans aged 18 to 45. acting cbp commissioner told us virtually all fentanyl is brought across in vehicles. >> men women, young, old. >> reporter: he tells us border agents have begun using a new technology to identify fentanyl.

this is new technology that's been installed to x-ray cars that officers suspect might be carrying narcotics, instad here because it's considered the ground zero for fentanyl traffic. but less than five percent of personal vehicles and 20% of commercial vehicles coming into the u.s. are actually scanned. with more new technology, miller wants to bring that number up to 45% of cars. but not for another two years. >> we see a million people crossing our border every single day, if we tried to scan every single shipment and person coming into this country -- >> reporter: we learned that scanners are sitting if in warehouses unused. >> we need $300 million for civil works to put the technology in the ground. >> reporter: money already spent but it's sitting there. is that frustrating for you in.

british royal family. catherine princess of wales has been spotted for the first time since christmas. molly hunter has more. >> new photos of the princess of wales. the photos are grainy, taken at a distance and appeared to show kate sitting in the front seat of a car driven by her mother. the palace declining to comment. the photo agency says they were snapped near windsor castle where a royal spokesperson says she's been recovering since her surgery back in january. we last saw the 42-year-old princess on christmas, just a few weeks before kensington palace announced she underwent planned abdominal surgery at a london hospital. at the time, the castle said the surgery was successful, but declined to reveal why she needed the operation in the first place, only saying it was non-cancerous. two weeks later, the palace said kate returned home to recuperate and would pick up her royal duties after easter. but in the age of social media

and fierce attention on the glamorous wales family, speculation has been growing, reaching a fever pitch last week when prince william missed a memorial service for his godfather, citing personal matters. >> the lack of information and the lack of the full picture of what's going on with kate and her health, of course has led people to speculate and try to come up with answers, to try to put the jigsaw puzzle together. >> reporter: a palace spokesperson telling nbc news the princess was doing well. and reiterating that kensington palace made it clear in january the time lines of the princess' recovery and will only be providing significant updates. meanwhile, prince william was back out and about in wales last friday, visiting the soccer-crazed city of wrexham where he shared a drink with actor and team co-owner rob mcelhenney. and also, receiving flowers for his wife. and the royal fans here trying their luck shouting questions.

faces on the truck as bullying? >> i think it's important for holding them accountable for their actions. >> it's not just the truck, entire websites keeping profiles of students they say are engaging in anti-semitic activity. >> these warnings are happening for years, to our students, to our communities and that they have to be careful how they even state things. >> reporter: some of these sites have been active since 2014, one website with profiles for nina and zara accuse them of anti-semitism, nbc news didn't see evidence of calls for violence against the jewish community on their profiles, instead nina's profile lists statements she's made online, including calling gaza and open air prison, and referring to israel as a colonial military project that's built on and continues to perpetuate the ethnic cleansing of palestinian people. zara's profile doesn't point to any statement she's made but lists student organizations she's a part of.

welcome back to "the fast forward." i'm janelle wang. a man accused of murdering his wife and mother-in-law is set to be arraigned today, even though their bodies have not been found. police say this man first reported the two women missing in september. he told investigators they drove to southern california after a family argument. then police sensed something suspicious when they spotted him driving his wife's car in december which they discovered in oakland. police arrested him last thursday based on evidence they say they found inside the home. one school district in the east bay is embracing artificial intelligence in the classroom. they allow some students to use a tool to design images with ai. students must agree to their digital policies before using it and on top of that, the district
