"early today" starts right now. good morning. glad you're with me. i'm frances rivera. we begin this morning with breaking news. at least 19 people have been killed and dozens more injured across texas, oklahoma, arkansas,

and kentucky after devastating storms unleashed their wrath on the central u.s. over the weekend. the severe storms and tornadoes reducing homes and businesses to rubble. president biden issuing a statement that he and first lady jill biden were praying for those who tragically lost their lives. and as severe storms continued on sunday, in chicago, attendees of the suenos music festival were evacuated after lightning moved in. overnight kentucky's governor issuing a state of emergency after wind damage and tornadoes. this morning, hundreds of thousands remain without power from texas to pennsylvania. nbc's priscilla thomas starts us off. >> dangerous storms continuing a deadly tear across the country. >> and the fans have been told to exit the grandstands and seek shelter immediately. >> reporter: at the indy 500, severe weather delaying the start of the race. fans evacuating as lightning moved in.

>> oh, there it is! go, go, go! >> reporter: it follows a violent night of deadly storms. >> when it hit, it was just so loud. >> reporter: dozens of tornadoes ripped across the heartland, from texas to arkansas, killing at least 15 people, including two children. >> we're in it, we're in it! i can't do anything! >> cover your head. >> reporter: in valley view, texas -- >> i don't have service. >> reporter: officials say as many as 80 people were trapped in this rubble when the gas station they were sheltering in crumbled. >> it's here, it's here, everybody running into the bathrooms and getting down, getting low. >> it was crazy. it was loud. >> reporter: the severe storms and tornadoes leveling entire neighborhoods. this is where the front steps of this house once stood. as you can see, it's been completely knocked off of its foundation. the entire second floor gone as family of seven sheltered inside. >> everything was shaking and moving. >> reporter: next door, yolanda vazquez says she clung to this doorknob as the twister tore through. what were you feeling? >> i was feeling that i was going to die, that it was my last day being alive.

>> reporter: in clairemont, oklahoma, the sphinx family rode out the tornado in their basement. >> they both worked their butts off for this house. i feel really bad for them. but it's going to work out. >> reporter: severe weather patterns have terrorized parts of the country with dangerous flooding, damaging winds, giant hail, and deadly tornadoes for the past month. with more than 400 reported twisters since the start of may. the most since 2019. that threat continuing tonight. >> i know the people here, you know. and i just, you know, it's just heartbreaking. >> thanks to priscilla for that report. we are nearing a potential verdict in the hush money trial of donald trump. closing arguments will begin tomorrow. this comes after a tough weekend on the campaign trail for the former president. mr. trump spoke at the libertarian national convention, but the voters there seemed hesitant to give him their support.

everyone campment for internally displaced gazans, setting off a raging fire. the massacre oms just days after the international court of justice in the hague ordered israel to halt its current attack on the city for fear of mass civilian deaths. for the latest, let's get to claudio lavanga. but first, we should warn you, these pictures are upsetting. claudio, good morning. bring us up to dayton latest. >> good morning, frances. authorities in gaza now say at least 50 people have died in that horrific attack, but now the fear is that the death toll may rise even further. now the gazan authorities are saying that that was a massacre because there were many amputations, many cases of severe burns, and they say that several, if not several, many children and women were once again among the victims. now the israeli defense forces acknowledge the attack saying that they were targeting a compound full of hamas terrorists, but authorities, the

palestinian authorities are saying that that was a refugee camp where displaced palestinians were just finding shelter after they were moved from other parts of gaza. now hamas has issued a statement saying that the u.s. and president biden bears full responsibility for these attack because they say that israel will have not carried it out if it wasn't for the green light from the u.s. but as a matter of fact, president biden as well as other world leaders, and as you mentioned, the international court of justice, did warn if not ask israel not to attack at rafa, especially because it is a place where there are hundreds of thousands of palestinians were finding shelter after they were displaced from elsewhere in gaza. it looks like israel crossed that red line as well with those devastating effects we are seeing in the pictures. on the same dayhamas did fire a barrage of rockets towards israel for the first time in four months. eight months towards tel aviv. only one landed, while there were no injuries and nobody was killed in that attack.

back to you, frances. >> claudio, thank you for the update. 12 people were injured when a plane encounters severe turbulence on a long haul flight, the second such high profile incident in less than a week. passengers on the qatar airways flight going from doha to dublin described the terrifying scene. >> panic. the look of panic everywhere. >> just felt theplane dip for about fife seconds. next to us we saw the flight attendant go up oin the air and come straight back down. >> so scary at the time. you don't is this is it or not. >> the airline says that matter is now subject to an internal investigation. on tuesday, a similar incident on a singapore airlines flight injured dozens who are still hospitalized. one passenger died of a suspected heart attack. scientists say that climate change and increasingly unpredictable weather means this could be happening more often now. a man is in custody in massachusetts this morning after allegedly stabbing four girls at a movie theater. police say the man entered an amc theater without paying and

attacked the girls, ages 9 to 17. they were taken to the hospital with nonlife-threatening injuries. the attack appearses to be random. police arrested the suspect after a car chase to cape cod. they say he is also a suspect in a similar assault in another parent of the state. millions along the east coast could face dangerous weather today. nbc meteorologist michelle grossman is tracking the holiday storms. it seems like no rest or break from these storms. michelle? >> i know it's day after day after day. even this morning we're seeing some strong storms. the radar is lit up from portions of the south all the way to the ohio. where you see the pink, that is a tornado. watch through this morning, tornado watch boxes. those are in the orange. and then the red are tornado warnings. so you want to be weather aware once again today. really heavy rain too, falling with a lot of the storms. hearing that thunder early this morning. and as you mentioned, where you have 68 million people at risk for severe storms from parts of the northeast, the great lakes, all the way down through the carolinas, into the southeast. so place likes

montgomery, columbia, rally, d.c., philly, new york city could see strong storms today. we could see winds gusting over 60 miles per hour. could see some hail. also some really heavy rainfall as well. and a few tornadoes are possible on this monday. we do have a flash flood risk where. you see the darker blue, that is the likelier risk we're seeing for flooding conditions. that's because we're going to see training storms. we have a lot of moisture with the storms. we could see 4 or 5 inches of rain with any of the storms, especially where you see the brighter colors or the reds, the oranges, the yellows. that's where we could see the pockets of heavy rain. in addition to the storms, we could break 30 rouecords. 18 million people impacted on the south along the gulf coast states aware. if you're going to be outside doing picnics,

spoke to the parents of two service members who made the ultimate sacrifice. >> reporter: 24-year-old kennedy sanders and 23-year-old breanna moffet enlisted in the u.s. army reserve in 2019. >> even though we have a long family history of people who have served in the military. >> when it came to her joining, i knew she was going to do it because she was in rotc. >> it didn't bother me because i did the same thing at 17. >> the young women became fast friends while deployed in jordan. >> every time kennedy called me, breanna was in the background. they was always together. >> reporter: they were also together when killed by an unmanned drone strike on a u.s. base in jordan on january 28th, along with sergeant william rivers. so talk to me about when you all got the news. where were you? >> when i got home, i saw the two officers that were at the house, and i
