this fire. he says he's seen unhoused people start a number of fires over the past several months. but oakland fire department indicates they do not believe that was the cause of this fire. here. what's left of the economy lumber here on high street, not far from 880. so the cause is still under investigation. you can see they have a ladder over there and occasionally they've been using that ladder to dump water on this fire. we saw an orange glow earlier. so this fire, even though it is contained, we know there's still the possibility of it flaring back up. so that's why oakland fire is still here on the scene. this is what the fire looked like last night. start around 745. in the evening. it grew so big that oakland fire had to call for a fourth alarm. this is a four alarm fire at its height, at least 80 firefighters were on the scene working to put this out, and for a short time rail service was shut down on the nearby railroad tracks. that has since resumed. now the lumber yard sits near a gas station. as we mentioned, the man who operated again, he said. there's

been fires here before. they normally start along the railroad tracks near a homeless encampment. but again, the fire department says they do not believe that that is what started the fire last night. they don't believe the fire started by the railroad tracks. they believe it started in the lumber yard itself. here's that man at the gas station. i was very afraid that. can we get a lot of gasoline? got over 30,000 gallons of gas under the ground over here. we got a lot of people over here. of course, i was worried. as far as we know, no one was hurt in the fire. and of course, during the firefight itself with the firefighters, they're all safe. they're okay. local roads are shut down in this vicinity, but we don't. this is having no impact on 880, which again, i said is nearby. and as the sun is going to be coming up, we can see that there is some smoke in the air. it is smoldering. and i know there was air quality issues before, but this seems very contained right now. so i don't see this being a huge problem for people unless you're literally on the scene

which now is only open to pedestrians. volunteers will help to paint it starting today, and it could be done by next weekend. volunteers are helping out with that. that's cool. so national movement focused on movement, brings home the spirit of memorial day for a lot of people. yeah fans of the military base workout is called rucking. they have special way to honor fallen service members. it's called the murph challenge. it's a special workout named after fallen navy seal lieutenant michael p murphy. he was killed in action in afghanistan 19 years ago. well, since that time, that workout honoring his sacrifice and service really has become a popular event with athletes all over the world rucking is a workout done with added weight using principles of crossfit training. kris i know you love that. yes, a former green beret whose current company endorses it. they say the training calls it the test of physical and mental endurance. honor the sacrifice and service of fallen, of the fallen. before you get to the barbecue and the beers and the and the family fun, you can.
5:20 am
you can honor all who have fallen and that's the true kind of meaning of what memorial day is. and then you can get on to your, your celebrations and, and wave your flags proudly. so if you're interested in it, here's the workout. it includes a one mile run, 100 pull ups, i don't care, 200 push ups, 300 squats, and another one mile and all of it wearing a weighted vest. chris, gary and i already talking about doing some of this ourselves. i mean, when we dream, you have to be in shape before you even start that one, because i can't do i can't do one pool. i could do the impossible. i was just challenged recently to do 50 military style push ups. okay, i got through 25 for you. so i mean, but that was hard and then got 200 on the screen and that's after the mile run. maybe we can all split this up. i know i'm down with that. yeah. add mike to that too. and low challenge. it was like but scott can't
5:21 am
point at your maps. your arms are just dead i know someone do the mile, someone do 20. it's like 25, 25, 25, 25 i think we've got this. yeah. all together, all for those weighted vest. and thank you for all those climb on your back service members out there. thank you for what you've done and what you continue to do. yeah. and i love that the founder recognized that like you know, people enjoy. you don't want to feel guilty for enjoying the extra day off. but like you said, you just it's all about you think about it in the morning and then yeah, well it makes sure we're doing that along with also enjoying the season. this we call it our official unofficial start to summer. right. so we are starting to have some slightly warmer temperatures here as we get into our usual pattern. but memorial day is going to have a cool coast and warm inland temperatures, and we will be on a warming trend over the next few days. some of the warmest days this week will be thursday and friday, but we're only starting out right now at 51 degrees in dublin. we're also seeing a lot of low 50s as you
5:22 am
move over toward the east bay, through the south bay and up the peninsula, some 40s in the north bay. and our overall pattern shows that we are going to have still some warm weather, but gradually warming up each day. this is our usual pattern, where we see foggy conditions at the coast and look at all the rain that could be coming to the pacific northwest and potentially farther to the north as we go toward the end of the weekend. we'll be watching out for that. it could bring us some cooler weather, but today we're looking at a nice little spread in temperatures anywhere from 59 in half moon bay to 78, napa will be in the low to mid 80s for areas farther to the north, and lake and mendocino counties over toward vacaville and fairfield. we're going to see low 80s, but mostly 70s from san jose to the tri valley into the day tomorrow. it's going to be also nice and seasonable. temperatures mostly in the 60s and 70s. and then on wednesday there will be some slightly warmer temperatures, but once
5:23 am
again, the much warmer air will be here by the end of the week. and we can see that in our 7-day forecast, as we'll see temperatures going from mid 70s for to today low 80s by wednesday, and then mid to upper 80s possible by thursday and friday. but then those temperatures come down through the end of the weekend. and san francisco will see highs and low 60s for today, with upper 60s through the end of the week. chris and marcus all right. thank you carrie. looking at some of those 60s and temperatures reminds me that we are now 60 days away from the paris olympics. next year on today in the bay, we're going to introduce you to an east bay sailor who is among those going for gold in par. and we also want to introduce you to some of the athletes with bay area ties who will be representing team usa. three time wnba champ chelsea gray is looking to bring home another olympic gold. she was actually a member of the 2020 team that went six and ro in tokyo to bring home gold. gray is also an analyst for our sister station, nbc sports

start out cloudy and eventually work our way toward a little bit more sunshine. but it will be a cool day with some breezy winds and temperatures in the upper 50s for the afternoon. eventually making it into the low 60s and fremont. it's going to be 73 today and 81 in fairfield, san mateo 66 and in santa rosa. we're going to be in the upper 70s. so we'll talk about a gradual warm up as we head throughout the week and getting out on the roads. i wanted to show you the san mateo bridge as there is such a light flow of traffic this morning. here and all around the bay area, we are going to continue to hopefully see commutes like this. not even a wait at the bay bridge toll plaza, and they probably won't even turn on the metering light, as we typically see at this time of day. and look, overall, the bridges are flowing well all across the bay area. only a few minor incidents , but nothing that's slowing down the commute so you can hang out with us and watch for a little bit longer before you head out the door. i'll have another update in a few minutes.

thank you so much, carrie. developing right now. it was a very long night for firefighters who are still at the scene of a large fire at a lumber yard. it started last night in oakland near interstate 80. and that's where we find today in the bay's bob redell this morning for us live. okay, so, bob, the conditions there this morning, what are they like? because this has been going on for quite some time now. well much improved as you can see behind me, the fire is contained but it is still smoldering, which is why the oakland fire department is still on the scene here of what remains of economy lumber here at high street, not far from 8 to 80, this is the remains of it. you might be able to see the smoke still wafting into the air. this is what the fire looked like shortly after it started. around 745 last night. you can see big flames. as you can imagine, there was a lot of lumber inside, which provided a lot of fuel for this fire. oakland fire escalated the firefight to a fourth alarm, which at one point meant there were at least 80 firefighters here on the scene. fortunately,
5:34 am
no one was hurt and the fire was contained to this property. a man who runs a gas station next door says he's recently seen a number of small fires set along the nearby railroad tracks by unhoused people. but oakland fire tells us they don't think this fire originated there, that it started at the lumber yard itself. the exact cause still under investigation. there are railroad tracks nearby. as i mentioned, rail service was briefly shut down, but it has since resumed. and i know there are concerns about air quality here. we are about 100 yards from it. yes, you can smell that. there was a fire here, but it's nothing as far as i'm concerned, where we're sitting here feeling we're having a trouble breathing reporting live here in oakland, bob redell today in the bay just makes people wonder whether they should call nine one so you don't have to. it's out. thank you so much, bob. so bay area nurse is opening up about the devastating scene she witnessed firsthand during her recent humanitarian mission to gaza. sandy adler is from fairfax and
