morning. thanks for making us a part of your morning. i'm marcus washington, and i'm kris sanchez. i'm here for laura garcia, who is off. first, we want to start with developing news. the oakland fire department is still on the scene of a large lumber yard fire just off 880. and you can see how massive those flames got last night. obviously a very different scene this morning. and that's where we find today in the bay's bob redell. and bob, do we have an update on what the cause is of this fire? there is a man who works at a gas station next door. the economy lumber that burned here on high street. marcus and kris. and he says recently he's seen a number of fires started in this area by unhoused people. but oakland fire department, they have cast doubt on that as being the cause for what this fire was yesterday. you could see the cause still under investigation. fire is contained, but the firefighters are still been pouring water on and off this morning onto the structure to make sure that nothing flares
6:02 am
back up. you can see it is smoldering. still, now that we're getting the sun up, this is what the fire looked like last night around 745. grew so big here at economy lumber that oakland fire had a call for a fourth alarm. at its height, at least 80 firefighters are working to put this out. and for a short time, rail service was shut down and nearby railroad tracks. we know service has since resumed. we just had a train go by within the past 5 to 10 minutes. the lumber yard sits near a gas station, as i mentioned. the man who operates it again, he says there have been fires in this area before they normally start along the railroad tracks near a homeless encampment, but again, the firefighters say they do not believe this started by the railroad tracks. they believe this fire started in the lumber yard itself. here's that man at the gas station. i was very afraid that can we get a lot of gasoline? got over 30,000 gallons of gas under the ground over here. we got a lot of people over here. of course, i was worried. as far as we know, no one was hurt in this fire.
6:03 am
firefighters they're all safe and sound. local roads in this area are shut down. this is also by 880, but it's having no impact on 880. so if you are driving today on this, this holiday morning, you might see some of the smoke smoldering from this. but again it's not going to have any impact on the greater morning commute. if there is one this memorial day reporting live here in oakland, bob redell today in the bay. all right. thank you so much, bob. well, one thing we can't see air quality sometimes is that going to have a big effect on our air quality. it's not a big impact and it's very localized what we're seeing. so as we take a look at some of our air quality maps that we are seeing, one little spot there, that we are seeing some moderate air quality around berkeley, orinda and el sobrante this morning. so just once again, a very localized area due to the wind direction and where we're also seeing that inversion layer kind of trapping some of that smoke and we can still once again, from our camera, see it smoldering there elsewhere across the bay area. we are expecting some pretty good air quality, and we're

are among the dead following this brutal el storm system. tens of thousands of people remain without power in the state, and the governor signed an executive order authorizing a quarter million dollars in aid for state emergency officials. the storms are continuing to move east this morning. kerry, it is tough to see. we know that, you know, we expect some stormy weather during this part of the year, but that's a lot. this has been a lot this season. we've had storm after storm coming through one of the most active tornado seasons that we've seen in history. and we're still looking at a severe weather threat, as we are seeing now, those storms targeting parts of the south with a severe thunderstorm watch in effect for the atlanta area. and then we're also seeing some of those storms moving off towards the east, toward the mid-atlantic coast. so we'll be watching out for that for today as we get a look at the pacific northwest that is also had a lot of wet weather. there's a new storm system

that's going to be coming in and potentially more on the way, but we're also going to have warmer temperatures for the bay area as we wake up with a clear sky and as we go throughout the day in san jose, our temperatures will be in the low 50s at 7:00. at 9:00, it's 60 degrees and we'll see some mid 70s into the afternoon, eventually reaching a high of about 77 degrees 75. in san martin in livermore, 77 degrees and 78 in concord, with mid to upper 70s for the north bay. very cool weather near the coastline and in san francisco. but eventually we're going to warm up a little bit for the valleys and the coast. so we'll take a look at that. coming up in the microclimate forecast in a few minutes. all right. thank you very much, kerry. it is 611 this morning. and a splash of color coming to downtown san jose ahead for you this morning. the army of artists set to transform san pedro square to the way you can take part in making it happen. so the stock markets are closed today. but

that warmth until about thursday or friday, so we're still enjoying some mild weather through at least midweek. and then as we take a look at our bigger view of all of the rain that's happening across the pacific northwest, none of that reaching us, and not even the cool weather up until the end of the weekend. we will see a system getting very close to us, and our temperatures continue to warm up to before we get to that point. so by thursday and friday, we're seeing some mid 80s and then some upper 70s and low 80s for the end of the weekend. and looking at san francisco, we'll be in the low to mid 60s throughout the next several days with upper 60s for thursday and friday. as you're heading out on the roads this morning, if you do have to make it through the east bay, you're commuting through the east bay. temperatures are not temperatures, but drive times are going to be pretty good there. we are seeing everything flowing at speed. here's a live look at fremont this morning. not a lot of cars out, and even

large amount of lumber inside which provided a lot of fuel for this fire. oakland fire escalated this firefight to a fourth alarm with at least 80 firefighters on the scene at one point. fortunately, no one was hurt and the fire was contained to this property. as i mentioned, a man who runs a gas station next door says he recently has seen a number of small fires set along the nearby railroad tracks. he believes set by unhoused people. but oakland fire tells us they don't think this fire originated there, that it started at the lumber yard itself. the exact cause still under investigation. there are railroad tracks right here. and for a brief moment yesterday, last night, rail service was shut down. but it has since resumed. we saw a train coming by here around 6:00 this morning reporting live here in oakland, bob redell. l today in the bay. so much going on there. i'm so glad no one was hurt. right. i mean, there was so much fuel for that fire. so let's head to carrie for a check of the air quality. this was wood that was burning. we have to assume some of it was treated with chemicals
6:34 am
because it's construction material, right? yeah. we've seen some of that air quality turning moderate and the wind direction carrying it closer to berkeley and orinda as well as el sobrante this morning. so that's where we're seeing one little spot where there is some moderate air quality this morning, and then we can still see a little bit of that smoke coming off as we get a look at this live view and our air quality outlook, which does show some improvement as we go throughout the day. looking good all around the bay area so this shouldn't have a major impact. and as you're heading out the door this morning, temperatures there in oakland are in the mid 50s and we will see temperatures in the mid to upper 60s for this afternoon. and we're going to have a wide range in temperatures from the coast to the inland valleys. as that fog lingers, half moon bay will be in the upper 50s while we'll see some areas in the 70s and even low 80s farther to the north. so i'll be tracking that with another update coming up in a few minutes. marcus and chris, thank you so much, carrie. at least 40 people are now
