a wall of fire coming down, where you can see where it where it was right now at 6:00, a new fire burning in napa county. the impact the smoke is having on people who live in the north bay and how today's heat will affect firefighters on the front lines. plus donald trump arriving in the bay area fresh off his conviction. we'll tell you about the campaign fundraiser the former president is attending and the protest that will no doubt meet him when he lands. plus, the community on alert. the search underway after yet another wild cat was spotted in the south bay. this is today in the bay 6:00 on thursday morning . now, i thought it was wednesday for a second. no, we're moving towards the weekend . thanks for joining us. i'm laura garcia and i'm scott mcgrew. marcus has already started his weekend. he has a
6:01 am
day off or two. let's see what we're going to do here at 6:00. i think we'll start with the brush fire in the north bay, causing an air quality advisory to be issued for some cities in napa county. crystal fire in saint helena erupted yesterday afternoon. crews stopped the fire from growing larger than 60 acres just before 5 p.m. no homes damaged, but five firefighters were hurt. sean mora, of saint helena, lives in the burn area. at one point, the fire was threatening some homes on the hillside, including her parents. she's house and dog sitting while they're out of town. so with the fire growing, she had to act fast. i just had to drive up and go get the dogs and get everyone out. so the fire has many living in the area on alert. it was so close to where the glass fire was in 2020, that fire damaged more than 1000 structures, burned more than 60,000 acres. as far as this fire, 65% contained, you know, in the hot temperatures that we're having, certainly not helping out the situation. well,
6:02 am
let's check in now with meteorologist kari hall. at least a little cooler conditions today. yeah. so we are going to see those temperatures coming down. humidity coming up. but we've also seen that smoke affecting our air quality not only from that fire but the recent fires that we've had and also the pollutants that are being trapped by the high pressure that caused that high heat. we're seeing the air quality still moderate in much of the north bay and parts of sonoma county, as well. and we are seeing the humidity levels coming up now when you have relative humidity at the 80 to 90 to 100% range, that slows the spread of fires. and so that's definitely hopefully going to help with the containment of the fires, especially that new crystal fire. and our temperatures are much lower. we're in the mid 50s right now. as you make your way over toward the east bay, you're stepping out the door to some mid 60s and it won't be as hot as we saw yesterday with mostly 70s 80s and a few low 90s across the bay area. we'll talk more about that in a few minutes. mike did you
6:03 am
find out what caused that crash you mentioned? you know, we don't know the cause in fact, we don't know a lot about the crash. but i did confirm that it is there. chp says indeed, westbound 37, just about merritt island, where we typically see slowing. there is a crash. i don't see any additional slowing coming off of highway 29 and out of vallejo, but we'll continue to track that. it's important. behind me, another one just pops up. just north of the benicia bridge. no slowing shows up, but again, it might take a few minutes for that to show. so we'll check those two critical spots for the north bay. looking at the east bay, a smooth drive and no problems and no surprises anywhere south of there. back to you. all right. thank you very much. new overnight. dozens are killed in an airstrike on a gaza school, which the israeli military claims was being used by hamas. local health officials say at least 30 people have been killed, including 23 women and children. dozens of others were injured. the israeli military says there was 20 to 30 hamas militants using the school to plan and execute attacks this

morning, top leaders from the u.s, france, spain and several other countries issued a joint statement calling for a cease fire deal to be reached. talks involving mediators are still underway, but so far show no sign of a breakthrough. it's 603 turning to decision 2024 and fresh off his criminal conviction, former president donald trump will be here in the bay area today. he'll attend a fundraiser in san francisco held by co-hosts of a popular all in podcast. tickets start at $50,000. now this fundraiser comes exactly a week since the president's felony conviction, which his campaign has been using as a successful rallying cry for donations. this morning, testimony is expected to resume rather in the criminal case against hunter biden. a jury heard from an ex-wife and an ex-girlfriend of president biden's son today in the bay's alice barr joins us live in washington. alice their testimony specifically focusing
6:05 am
on hunter's drug use. and this is deeply personal testimony, for sure, for the president's son. prosecutors do say it's possible they could wrap up their case by as soon as today. as you noted, scott, the jury heard from both hunter biden's former girlfriend and his ex-wife yesterday. he was married to kathleen buell from 1993 to 2017. she testified that she found a pipe belonging to the president's son in 2015, and he allegedly acknowledged to her that he used crack. so he cast in an ex-girlfriend who met hunter biden while she was a dancer at a gentlemen's club. also testified that he used cash to pay for many things, including drugs. biden faces three charges tied to gun possession while using drugs. the prosecution is trying to prove he knowingly lied on a federal form when he purchased that gun in 2018, but hunter biden's defense team is focused on that word, knowingly saying
6:06 am
he did not knowingly lie on the form when denying he used drugs or was an addict. first lady jill biden has been one of his many supporters in the courtroom throughout the proceedings, and prosecutors say they have six additional witnesses to call. they're expected to not testify for as long as what we've been hearing so far, which could move the proceedings along. and if the prosecution does rest its case today, they're expected to ask the biden defense team who they would be calling for their witnesses. and then, alice, yesterday we also heard from the gun store guy, right, who actually sold the gun to hunter biden. yep. this is gordon cleveland. not only did he sell the gun to hunter biden, but he said he was there and he watched him fill out a form that asked if he used drugs. that's the form at the center of this. and he says that hunter biden did check no on that form. cleveland says the president's son paid $900 for the gun, allowing the clerk to keep $13 in change. that gun biden allegedly purchased was also shown to the
6:07 am
jury. biden's defense team began their questioning yesterday of cleveland by challenging his recollection, trying to poke holes and what he recalls about the events surrounding the purchase. they are expected to resume cross examination when court gets back underway this morning. and at the same time that this is all going on back here in washington, house republicans say they'll be issuing referrals to the department of justice for both hunter biden and the president's brother, james biden, for allegedly lying to congress. scott all right, alice from washington, thank you. well, there is a mountain lion wandering around a south bay neighborhood as we speak. folks in the edendale edenvale neighborhood, i should say, in san jose, spotted the cat last night. it's near l.a. drive and war admiral way, not too far from valley christian high school. and here's a live look at the neighborhood as the sun comes up the mountain lion was spotted walking in the front yards of a lot of homes. at last check. police are asking neighbors to stay indoors and

6:09 am
committee will vote on what actions, if any, it's willing to take to bring pandas to the san francisco zoo. mayor london breed has asked for $25 million, the committee recently said no and postponed the request until today, calling it a distraction, saying there are more urgent funding issues as well. that meeting will be at ten this morning. okay, out to walnut creek, where the sun is coming up. it was warm even as we got into our cars early, early this morning. kerry, it will be another warm one. yes. just not as warm as yesterday. we're going to bring you down about ten degrees across much of the bay area and we're still seeing this hazy view this morning as you're waking up and heading out. don't forget the sunglasses in dublin. we are going to see the temperatures going from 70 at 9:00 to 80 at 1:00, and then that's where the temperatures start to slow down in that warm up. and we'll stay in the low 80s for the afternoon all across the bay area when we take a look
6:10 am
at what's average and where we're headed for today, santa rosa will see a high of 92, but usually for this date we're up to about 80 degrees. so it is well above average. and we're looking at concord's high temperature of 89. san francisco will be in the low 70s livermore 91, when our average high temperature is 80 degrees. and in san jose, we're usually in the upper 70s. but we'll see highs in the upper 80s. for this afternoon, we'll talk about more cool temperatures in our forecast for tomorrow. that's coming up in a few minutes. mike, where can we fill up for less? you know, pick a couple of spots. drivers through concord. they're going to head to the valero on willow pass road for contra costa county's best for 29 solano counties. low is a new name on our list. in vallejo. it's j and r gas on serrano drive for 39. there. it's near the big kaiser complex and today's highest low is farthest south. santa clara with a 453. that's platinum gas on washington street. of course, at the bottom of the list here, it

we expect right now at 613. here's our temperature trend for concord. it will be in the upper 70s at 11:00. and today it will be in the mid 80s. yesterday in concord we hit 104 degrees. this is definitely an improvement. we'll talk about the continued cool weather in our forecast. that's coming up in a few minutes. all right. yeah, we'll take any improvement over yesterday's temps over here. no improvement needed. you're still at speed but you're seeing a lot more company headlights southbound on 880, passing by

tesla a little farther south and then in towards silicon valley. we'll show you the builds, distributes around the bay. well, 614 let's take a look at the futures. about 15 minutes before the open. there they are. so the s&p 500 notched a new record yesterday. so it will open at a record. european central bank just cut interest rates. yes. cut interest rates. the justice department and well the federal trade commission have reportedly reached an agreement to investigate microsoft, openai and nvidia. they're going to look into dominant roles. those companies play in the ai industry. the new york times reporting that doj will focus on nvidia, the ftc will get openai and microsoft. neither of the companies nor the government have commented on that report. but in the meantime , the artificial intelligence boom powering nvidia to become the second most valuable public company in the world behind microsoft, surpassing apple. the

chip maker is now valued at more than $3,000,000,000,000 billion. it passed apple wednesday, when nvidia stock rose 5. nvidia, of course, makes those chips powering the ai boom. its stock is up more than 3,000% in the last five years. wow well, if you're cashing in on that and you got some extra cash and you want to tip a little bit more, new at six is tipping. however, reaching a tipping point, according to a new survey from bankrate, one third of americans think it's out of control. nearly 60% now have a negative view of it. many say they felt businesses should pay people better and that they are annoyed about pre-entered tip screens. they also say they'd be willing to pay higher prices just to be done with the process. a senior business correspondent for the today show says people are less likely to tip if it's not in person. the research shows people feel like they can skip on the tip. if it's an impersonal thing like you've ordered it on your phone and the
6:17 am
whole interaction is on your phone, and then there's some food that shows up at the front door. people feel more comfortable about skipping that tip. you're not seeing the face there. well, according to bankrate, tipping has gone down in several areas since 2021, like tipping servers, hairdressers and those takeout orders. well trending. this morning we told you about the return of the notorious surfboard stealing order last week. and now officials in santa cruz are warning beachgoers to stay away from marine life. new signs posted at streamer lane along west cliff warn people about aggressive sea otters in that area. california's department of fish and wildlife recommends keeping at least 60ft away from marine life at the beach. you let them do their thing and you do your thing well. if surfing sea otters weren't enough, how now you have body surfing, deep at the deep down in aptos, right? so okay. the students on a field trip, seacliff state beach got to see this on tuesday. parents took
6:18 am
video of a deer there. it is highlighted for you swimming near the shore. they say it came running out from a nearby forest . caught a wave wiped out. came back, tried catching another one, but then eventually changed its mind. eventually went back into the forest. i think just everybody is just trying to cool off. wow. who knew? amazing. i don't think i've ever seen that. yeah, right. wow. california i was just gonna say california deer. ask for comment. it's a dude, right? exactly. everybody is looking for somewhere to cool off. yeah, and the beach is definitely going to be cooling off. the next few days. will be in the 60s there along the coastline while the valleys are still hot. the changes that we're seeing this morning, the return of the low clouds and fog, you can kind of see it trying to make its return to the golden gate bridge, and that's what helps cool us down. not only for the coastline, but that wind coming off of that coastal fog cools us off in the valleys
6:19 am
as well. so we're right now seeing already a wide range of temperatures. we're in the low 50s in san francisco. but as you step out the door, martinez, you're like, oh, it's still kind of warm. it's in the upper 60s, right now. we're going to see highs in the upper 80s for the south bay. after seeing those 90s yesterday, this will be a little bit better in morgan hill, 92 or 91 today after hitting a high of 100 yesterday and we saw triple digits for parts of the inland east bay today. it's in the low 90s, so we're making some progress here. it will be in the upper 70s for hayward and then for palo alto 85 compared to the 66 and half moon bay, san francisco in the upper 60s, low 70s, downtown, 71 degrees, and in the north bay in the upper 80s for sonoma, while santa rosa will see a high of 92. santa rosa is going to also be one of the spots in the parts of the sonoma valley where we're going to see those temperatures dropping in the upper 70s tomorrow and then low to mid 80s
6:20 am
for the weekend, so that's not too bad. we will still have our cooler overnight temperatures early in the morning, late in the evening. so then we are going to spend a few hours in the 80s. so if you have some outdoor plans, not too bad. now we're also going to see it gradually warming up as we go into the middle of next week. with those 90s returning, while san francisco brings it back to the 60s for highs for the most part into the weekend, low clouds and fog will be returning. mike, you're looking at a new crash on highway 24. yeah, we just heard about this. i waited for the direction clarification. it is eastbound, so it's opposite your main commute. usually we'll see traffic building up toward lafayette as we're looking westbound, but it's eastbound. maybe closer to us than moraga road, which is marked on the map here. again, it sounds like everything may be off the roadway, but a couple of light poles might be down watching for complications. nonetheless we're looking at the commute. walnut creek interchange, a smooth drive 680 coming down through contra costa county is fine. there's more slowing. this focus. slowing usually means the
6:21 am
traffic is getting ready to clear, because a crew is starting to do some breaks there. eastbound highway four just off to 42 westbound is your commute direction. you see the gradual build, but no surprises, no issues as far as that crash north of the benicia bridge and the crash over there near merritt island, west 37 seems to be operating for standard flow, so we'll just note that it's there. the backup is also here at the richmond side of the san mateo bridge towards san rafael. not san mateo. let's show you san mateo bridge is moving just fine here. a little build on the flat section, but no major issues. and that volume quite manageable coming off the nimitz. no delays past the dumbarton bridge south of there. the south bay shows a nice smooth drive. same thing for the peninsula. so back over to you. all right. thank you very much, mike. well, next on today in the bay nbc bay area response. he contacted his bank 90 times about a problem and nothing changed until he contacted us once. i'm consumer investigator chris chmura nbc bay area responds next

6:27 am
with fiber, phytochemicals, nutrients. it's slowly absorbed. it's a very nutritious food, as it was opposed to fruit juice. or when you extract the sugar from the fruit or from corn or wherever else you're getting it from, it's rapidly absorbed. ahead this morning on today, everything you need to know about sugar consumption when it comes to health and wellness. and of course, that starts at seven right after today in the bay. but right now it is 626 and we've got a lot more ahead at 630, including an investigation underway in san francisco. shots fired late last night. the new details we're learning from witnesses at the scene overnight . plus california cash. it's still up for grabs as former president donald trump is set to pay a visit to san francisco to fundraise. we'll have more details on his visit today. and reversing course. the recent state farm is now letting some customers keep their insurance policies, but it does come with a catch the steps customers have

6:32 am
crews stopping the fire at 60 acres just before 5:00. it did cause an air quality advisory for some cities in napa county. luckily, no homes were damaged, but five firefighters were hurt right now it is 65% contained. let's ask meteorologist kari hall to join in here. you've been tracking some potentially dangerous conditions. not going to be quite as hot today. you said. yeah. and that should hopefully help the firefighters get more containment on that. humidity is higher. but this has had an impact on our air quality. and we've seen this and not only this, that fire, but all of the fires we've had recently. cause an impact to what we're breathing in out there. and so we are seeing that smoke settling into parts of the north bay valleys and then moving down into the rest of the bay area. but once again, the humidity is higher when you see humidity levels in the upper 80 to 90% range, even up to 100. that means the air is moist and under those conditions, fires tend to spread a lot more
6:33 am
slowly, which will hopefully help with the containment. it's also cooler. we're in the mid 50s now and it will be a cooler afternoon, but we're still hot in some of those valleys. headed up to 92 in santa rosa and ukiah. will still reach the triple digits, but we'll talk about those numbers coming down even more so tomorrow. that's coming up in the full microclimate forecast. all right. sounds good. we'll check back with you. well, this week's fire danger, especially concerning from homeowners. state farm says some customers at risk of losing their home insurance can keep their policy. but there's some steps they must take. according to the chronicle, the company says some customers can keep their policy if they also sign up for the california fair plan for fire coverage. the fair plan is a state created but privately run insurers. it covers damage from fire, lightning, internal explosions and smoke. state farm didn't say how many customers would be offered continue coverage, but interested customers can sign up at their next renewal date. following july 3rd. it all comes after

6:35 am
trump's motorcade from reaching the california gop convention in burlingame. the crowd then ended up blocking airport boulevard, causing trump's motorcade to pull to the side of highway 101. and then mr. trump walked through construction barriers in order to enter the convention late and through a back door. and then we went under a fence and through a fence and oh, boy, i felt like i was crossing the border. actually now, here's another bay area visit in 2019, when trump held a fundraiser at a tech executive's home in silicon valley, protesters were also there to greet him with a baby trump balloon. and today, an anti-trump crowd is also expected to come out. yesterday, a bay area group did a test run, inflating this 33 foot tall trump chicken balloon kept in storage. now trump's visit comes a week after his 34 count conviction in his hush money trial. and scott, it is
6:36 am
important to note that while the former president has been to the bay area back in 2016, again in 2019, it's been quite a while since he's been to san francisco, reportedly over a decade at least. so be interesting to see what his experience is like today. and of course, we'll be bringing you updates both on air and online at nbcbayarea.com. scott, all right, ginger, thank you. reporting from san francisco 80 years ago today. the course of history changed forever. the d-day invasion helped bring an end to the war in europe. we have a live look in normandy where people are gathering, including president biden and other world leaders. speaking earlier this morning, issuing remarks at the commemoration ceremony, 3000 american soldiers, sailors and pilots died in the first 24 hours of the d-day invasion. their sacrifice is seen now as the start to the end of world war two. president biden and first

coastline and warm in the valleys. it will be breezy, so that helps transport out that cool ocean air even into the inland areas. but it will start to gradually heat up as we go into the next week, when we take a look at what we're going to see today versus the record high temperature, we may tie the record in santa rosa to 92 degrees. that was set back in 2021. yesterday we hit 100 degrees. so that is definitely an improvement, but still well above normal other areas. i don't think we'll set new records, but we are above what we typically see even for this time of year. our high temperature in the south bay, ranging from upper 80s in cupertino and san jose to low 90s in morgan hill. gilroy today, 87 degrees. and yesterday we were in the triple digits in antioch 93. today it's still warm, but just not as dangerous to your health and the long time exposure. and we're going to see temperatures in the upper 70s for oakland. compare that to the 73 in san mateo, 85 in palo alto

today, and low 70 downtown san francisco. while much of the rest of the city stays in the 60s 80 in mill valley for the afternoon. and look at that. ukiah still up to 102 degrees for today. so as we take a look at morgan hill and over the next few days, it's going to drop. it's going to be a nice weekend. low 80s there, sunshine and a breezy wind, but it will start to get hot again for the middle of next week with maybe a day or two with those highs back up to the low 90s. and looking at our extended 7-day forecast for the inland areas, we're headed down for those temperatures for the weekend. boy, that is just on time. and then it starts to heat back up for the middle of next week. san francisco sees the return of the fog and at times some clouds, cooler air and highs in the 60s through the weekend. mike, what's going on with that crash in orinda? yeah, we talked about it earlier. there was no slowing and everything was off to the shoulder, but a couple of light poles damaged and i think a crew arrived to at least do a little follow up. so that's why we see some slowing now eastbound right

lion was spotted just walking in the front yards of homes. at last check, police are asking neighbors as i mentioned, to stay indoors and bring those pets inside. officers are actually working with animal control to try to track it down. you should call 911 if you happen to spot that mountain lion. so moments ago we got an update on that brushfire in the north bay crystal fire, saint helena 75% contained. crews stopped the fire at 60 acres just before five shortly after it started. it definitely caused an air quality advisor for some cities in napa county. no homes damaged, but at least four firefighters hurt, all expected to be okay. one outbuilding, though, was destroyed. tough one. it's so hot for those firefighters too, and all of their gear for safety. but a cooldown is coming for us. yes, we are going to see a cooldown and especially in the morning hours, that's when we're getting a break. some of our inland temperatures still headed up to 94 today, and then will be in the low 80s for friday into the weekend, and san francisco's bringing back those 60s after a warm one yesterday. it will be
