for the opportunity to see the princess. you see it there. this moment happening just about an hour ago. the princess of wales inside that carriage alongside her three children. she was decked in a beautiful white dress with blue trimming. guys, she looked absolutely stunning. this, of course, coming just hours after the palace released this photo of the princess, and then she wrote this letter to the world letting them know an update about her health. in fact, i want to read some of it for you. she said, i am making good progress, but as anyone going through chemotherapy will know, there are good days and there are bad days. in her message the princess says she knows she is not out of the woods yet, adding, "i am learning how to be patient, especially with uncertainty, taking each day as it comes,

listening to my body and allowing myself to take this much-needed time to heal." now, this morning kate's carriage was following that of the king. he was seated alongside his wife, queen camilla, making their way to horse guards parade. the king noticeably not inspecting his troops on horseback. it was a recommendation from his medical team because, of course, he too is undergoing cancer treatments as well. but then, guys, in -- gosh, let me see. about 30 minutes or so, the culmination of the day, the see princess kate out. she says she is looking forward to attending other events throughout the summer, but the palace has made it very clear in though way is this her returning back to public-facing duties.

of overwhelming rain and dangerous flash flooding. thankfully they should be getting a bit of a break today. we'll get angie's forecast in a few moments. we want to begin with nbc's sam brock in hard-hit miami this morning. sam, good morning. >> reporter: peter, good morning. it's not just the amount of rainfall that came down, but the rate at which it was falling in bursts, peter, that ended up overwhelming neighborhoods like this one. today the water is largely receded. we're five days into this and there's still this much water on streets. agencies have been deployed to help people, but right now there's property owners trying to make their homes habitable again after a rough week. this morning, florida just now taking a breath, after four rounds of rain. with a week's worth of rainwater still cascading through neighborhoods, including this portion of miami-dade that's seen close to two feet of water,

fire crews hoisting people from their homes. in north miami there's still three to four feet of water on the ground, and if you don't have a tow truck or suv, some residents have been stuck for days. >> it's unsanitary to see people walking through the water. >> reporter: a reminder of the times, serious trouble in the air, with around 7,000 delays across the country friday. the weather proving incredibly disruptive. from boston, blasted by thunderstorms, to minnesota still recovering from earlier this week. back in florida, residents are still trying to dry out. >> what are you doing with that? >> i'm sucking the water out because it's about two inches. >> reporter: this man using a vacuum in his house. >> i haven't seen miami like this. i see it more like during like hurricane time, but not like non-hurricane related, no.

>> reporter: governor desantis downplaying the severity one month after signing a bill to reduce the footprint of climate change. >> the most recent briefing i found, it's more of a typical south florida afternoon-type shower. >> do you think for folks in the middle of this it's upsetting to hear the governor describe it as a normal thunderstorm? >> of course they're going to get mad. it's not normal. you can't get mad at mother nature, but it's been happening over and over. >> reporter: and after major weather events, it's normal to see fema assistance deployed. the threshold is 1,000 homes that are badly damaged or destroyed. according to the state's department of emergency management, the number is in the low hundreds, but they're not aware of any homes that are actually destroyed. so no federal assistance, at least in that respect, coming to folks who are obviously soaked and trying to figure out the next step. back to you. >> it doesn't make the situation any better for the folks there.

sam brock on the ground in miami, thank you. let's bring in angie. the rain mostly moving out, but now we're about to get the heat. >> the heat is going to be the big story and it has been the story for the southwest. you can see some alerts for 10 million people. but it's going to build and include a whole lot more people as the weekend goes on. here is a look at your temperatures today into this afternoon, triple digits for las vegas and el paso. kansas city, 92 degrees, even the southeast getting in on this. we've got high 90s expected in places like atlanta and tallahassee. we get the great lakes in on this action and parts of the ohio valley will start to see temperatures rising as we get into tomorrow. sunday afternoon, 92 degrees in chicago, 98 for nashville. we're still warm in the middle of the country, and of course the triple digits out west. by the time we get into early next week we turn up the heat for parts of the northeast. we'll see 90s for new york, high 90s expected across parts of the ohio valley. >> thank you for that. president biden is landing in los angeles this morning just a day after wrapping up a critical summit with world

leaders in italy. he is attending a star-studded fundraiser as former president trump heads to michigan to speak to conservatives there. nbc's aaron gilchrist is in los angeles this morning. good morning. >> reporter: good morning to you. president biden traveling to l.a., coming for the celebrity-packed event hosted by george clooney and julia roberts. we understand there will be a q&a with biden and former president barack obama, and according to "people" magazine, tickets cost between $250,000 and $125,000. the former president, donald trump, also on the campaign trail this weekend. he spoke at a party celebrating his 78th birthday last night in florida. tonight he is set to speak at a conservative political conference in detroit that's after he participates in a community roundtable as his campaign tries to build some support in black communities around the country, peter. >> aaron gilchrist on the ground ahead of the president's arrival in l.a., thank you. at the g7 earlier this week

president biden signing a ten-year security agreement with ukraine's president zelenskyy, and this weekend dozens of world leaders are coming together in switzerland for a summit on peace in ukraine to try to figure out a way to end the war there. nbc's chief foreign correspondent, richard engel, is in ukraine this morning. what's the latest? >> reporter: so that summit is under way, and i think you described it perfectly, some people are calling this a peace summit, but russia is not there, the issue of the cease-fire isn't really on the agenda. there will be no agreement at the end of this. this is a summit on peace in which the u.s. is represented, the white house is there, the vice president, national security, and of course president zelenskyy, to come up with what a peace deal could look like in the future, what would be acceptable, what are the principles. it comes on the heel of that ten-year agreement, that commitment from president biden to support ukraine for a decade,

to continue funding the military, cooperating with intelligence. that deal, of course, could be torn up by a future president. and it is in this context, while ukraine and its biggest ally are meeting to discuss what a peace deal might look like, that vladimir putin chimed in and said, by the way, his terms for a peace deal, his terms to ending the war would be taking control permanently of all of the territory that russia currently holds and quite a bit of ukraine that russia does not currently occupy, a position that ukraine and the united states have both said is not acceptable. >> richard engel in ukraine this morning, thank you. we want to get a quick check of the rest of the country's forecast. we're watching the tropics, that means its hurricane season. >> we're barely into hurricane season, but we're watching the southwest gulf of mexico with a disturbance that has a 50% chance of developing. we're likely going to see that happen maybe by wednesday, a

tropical depression potentially forming and leaving us with heavy rain across parts of the gulf coast. not the case this weekend. you're going to see nice conditions, it will be warm but plenty of sunshine for folks out and about on saturday. the desert heat sticks with us. severe storms across parts of the midwest, we're going to see hail, strong winds and isolated tornadoes in that region. nothing too impressive, but a beach day expected east. you're going to see nice conditions lasting for father's day, celebrating all the dads across the country. don't cringe too much. building heat into parts of the south as well, we've got 96 degrees expected in lawn, texas, and we will see full sunshine out west for folks

sunnyvale got away with more than $1 million worth of merchandise. the entire crime took just about two minutes. you can see 20 people rushed into the store on wednesday, smashed up cases and took everything they could for. five people have been arrested and charged so far. this is a look at them. sunnyvale police are now asking for any tips to help them catch the others. we talk with an expert about what can be done to stop this crime wave. i would encourage retailers to put imitation jewelry, watches, diamonds in these display cases, purses and when people want to see them, they pull them out individually. this is literally a where a critical mass for retail in california. the investigators also want to know if this robbery is tied to the robbery of another sunnyvale jewelry store just last month. we're going to turn now to the forecast and check in with cinthia pimentel on this final official weekend of spring. oh, yeah, you're absolutely right

london. you can see the king there. the rain has been coming down outside of buckingham palace. >> today more special not just with the king there, but it's the first time we're seeing the princess of wales since she announced her cancer announcement earlier this year. >> it's nice to see george and charlotte and louie, now all grown up. charlotte is 10 years old -- or george is 10 years old these days. let's begin this half hour with a check of the headlines. conspiracy theorist alex jones will have to sell his personal assets to pay the $1.5 billion he owes for falsely claiming the sandy hook elementary school shooting was a hoax. a judge ordered the liquidation of jones' assets, including his multimillion dollar texas ranch. the victims' families can move to collect that debt in state courts where they won defamation suits against him. jones vowing to appeal the cases. the decision came the same week as the classmates of the 20

young victims graduated from high school. some really scary moments at an oregon amusement park on friday. 28 people were left dangling upside down, high at the top of that ride for most of a half an hour. portland firefighters worked with park employees to finally manually lower the ride. the good news is that no one was injured. the ride will remain closed while state investigators investigate exactly what happened. and in the nba finals, the dallas mavericks on the verge of elimination against the boston celtics in game four made it clear they are not yet ready to go home. >> looking to push. alley-oop. perfect connection! >> that was superstar luka doncic, with 29 points of his own, led to mavs to the ploout win, 122-84. the third largest margin of victory ever in the nba finals. the celtics still lead the

series 3-1. game five, monday night in boston. with a busy summer travel season now kicking into high gear, we're learning about two terrifying midair incidents recently, one with the plane coming close to slamming into the ocean, and another going into an uncontrolled roll mid-flight. nbc's senior correspondent, tom costello, has more. >> reporter: it was a very close call off kauai in april. the faa confirming it's investigating a southwest flight that came within 400 feet of slamming into the ocean, while attempting to land in bad weather. a southwest memo to pilots says, a less experienced first officer inadvertently pushed the control column father, then cut the speed, causing cockpit alarms to go off before the captain ordered an aggressive climb. no injuries. southwest tells nbc news nothing is more important than safety, the event was addressed appropriately, as we always strive for continuous improvement. meanwhile, the ntsb is

investigating another incident that happened in may on a southwest flight from phoenix to oakland. at 34,000 feet, the 737 max 8 suddenly went into what pilot's call a dutch roll, rocking from side to side. pilots regained control and landed safely. a post-flight inspection revealed damage to the standby power control unit that provides power to the rutter. the faa says it has no reports of similar problems involving 737 maxes. >> i don't think we have a fleet problem. there's something unique to this airplane and that's what the investigators are going to concentrate on. >> reporter: another concern, the faa looking at whether potentially counterfeit titanium from china made its way into the supply chains with forged documents. boeing flagged the concern to the faa. both boeing and airbus say there's no sign that any aircraft was made with suspect

titanium. >> does the faa have enough inspectors to truly keep an eye on boeing. >> we feel like we have enough but we continue to hire. >> reporter: this comes as the tsa predicts they could scan a record number of passengers, 3 million, in a single day. >> thank you for that. let's get another check of the forecast, and specifically we want to focus on south florida because we have been watching all week, these guys were just getting slammed with rain, angie. >> it was incredible amounts of rain. over 20 inches, and the good news is we're going to start to see things receding, and we have just only a little bit more rain in the forecast here for the long haul. we still do have flood watches in effect, we'll see it for parts of miami-dade throughout the day. the rain will be focused mostly into central florida. improvements with the forecast for south florida. unfortunately, if you're going to be out and about in parts of the plains or midwest, we have a chance for strong storms as the system moves through.
