wildfires engulf the west, infernos across california scorched thousands of acres and even forced evacuations near los angeles. why this could be just the start

to a brutal summer wildfire season. gun violence erupts across the country, a shooting at a splash pad in michigan leaving nine injured, including several children. while two are dead after a shooting at a juneteenth festival in texas. what we've learned from the investigations. president biden scores a historic haul at a star-studded fundraiser while former president trump vies for black voters in detroit. we're live with the dueling events in the race for the white house. what's better, working from home or going to the office? a new study shows that the answer might be both. it was anything but the same old song and dance at the tony's. which shows came out on top at broadway's biggest night. it's monday, june 17th. "early today" starts right now. good morning, i'm frances rivera. the western wildfire season is off to an explosive start as multiple fires burn across the

region. the post fire is los angeles county's first major blaze of the year and has devoured more than 14,000 acres. it's only 2% contained. some 1,200 people were forced to evacuate from the hungry valley evacuation area over the weekend. in butte county teams are working on the fire which is 92% contained. a fast moving brush fire in sacramento county threatened homes and livestock so far scorching nearly 900 acres. families near phoenix, arizona, are facing the charred aftermath of the rose fire that erupted last wednesday. the flames destroying 15 structures, including seven homes. and this is just the beginning of the hot, dry weather fueling these wildfires. nbc meteorologist michelle grossman joins us with the sweltering temperatures blanketing much of the country this week. michelle, good morning. >> frances, great to see you. it will be a tough week. dangerous temperatures really throughout all of the workweek,

we are looking at temperatures into the 90s, 100s. if you are not in the 90s it will feel like over 100 degrees in many spots, this is coast to coast heat. over the next five days we are going to see 264 million people over 90 degrees. you need to prepare for that. we haven't seen that in a while in a lot of spots, it's not even summer yet, that comes later this week. heat alerts this morning, 66 million people impacted by the heat alerts, heat advisories in the orange color, heat watches and warnings in the pink. portions of the midwest into the ohio valley, the northeast looking at heat alerts this morning. this is why, we are looking at temperatures into the 90s, could see record-breaking temperatures as well, 10, 15 degrees above normal for this time of year. chicago 95, 92 pittsburgh, 93 syracuse. we will see just as hot tomorrow, 97 tomorrow in syracuse. we will talk about this heat and look at the rest of the week in a few minutes. >> thanks for that, michelle. in texas two people were killed at a mass shooting at a juneteenth celebration in a park near austin. another 14 were wounded by

gunfire, police say. most have been released from the hospital. the victims' ages range from 10 to 60. the local police chief offered a description of the suspect who they sagan shooting after an altercation. >> we are looking for a black male, 5'7", thin build, approximately 19, 20 years of age, with short dreads and he was last seen wearing a white hoodie. >> the suspect is considered armed and dangerous. a $5,000 reward is being offered for anyone with information leading to his arrest. police have identified the suspected gunman in a michigan shooting. officials say 42-year-old michael william nash drove up to a city park in rochester hills and started firing a semi-automatic handgun at people in the park's splash pad area. nine people including two children were hurt and police tracked the suspect to a nearby home. >> to no avail, had no contact

back. after a period of time we breached the home and deployed drones to begin an examination of the home to make a determination if it was still a hostile actor and we located the individual deceased in the home. >> police say the shooting seemed random and the man may have had some mental health challenges. one of the victims, an 8-year-old boy, was struck in the head and hospitalized in critical condition. let's turn now to the race for the white house. the biden campaign says it has raised more than $30 million at a star-studded fundraiser, breaking the record for any democratic party event. nbc news has reached out to confirm that record. nbc's alice barr joins us now. good morning, alice. this event also included some important discussions. what did the president have to say? >> good morning, frances. that's right, the president sat down for a wide-ranging conversation with former president obama and the moderator late night host jimmy

kimmel. the three men took aim at donald trump, bringing up his recent convictions and other legal issues and president biden warned that if his opponent is elected in november, one of the scariest aspects could be the impact on the supreme court. >> the next president is likely to have two new supreme court nominees. two more. two more. the idea that if he's reelected he's going to appoint two more flying flags upside down is really -- i really mean it. look, the supreme court has never been as out of kilter as it is today. i mean, never. >> mean while, over the weekend the trump campaign launched a new effort to grow support among black voters. the former president held a round table event at a church in detroit, speaking to the community there mr. trump framed president biden as a threat to black americans, referencing a 1994 crime bill authored by then senator biden.

in a statement a spokesperson for the biden campaign says the trump campaign's 11th hour attempt at black voter outreach isn't fooling anyone. frances. >> alice bar for us, thank you. in a surprise announcement that seemed to catch even the government offguard the israeli army has introduced daily lulls in fighting in the southeastern gaza strip in and around rafah. it's an attempt to get more aid in. the pauses will happen between 8:00 a.m. and 7:00 p.m. local time. essentially during daylight hours, until further notice. israeli media reports that prime minister netanyahu was surprised and angered by the move, but will not stop it. fighting continued in gaza sunday, nine people including five children were killed when their home was bombed in central gaza according to ap journalists on the ground. nearly 80 countries signed on to a statement expressing support for ukraine saying that the country's territorial integrity must form the basis of any peace deal with russia.

the summit in switzerland was billed as a first step towards peace, but russia was not invited to the conference and moscow's key ally china did not attend. for the latest let's go to claudio lavanga who is following the story for us. good morning. what more did the countries agree on? >> reporter: good morning, frances. the final document says that the united nations charter as well has respect for territorial integrity and sovereignty of ukraine forms the basis for a just and lasting peace. listen to what jakesullivan, the national security adviser, had to say about that. >> the vision of peace that was put forward here today from so many different countries, rooted in principles all of us signed up to, rooted in principles all of us would like to live in a world that are ruled by those principles because they make us all safe. this is the right vision as we go forward. >> reporter: now, the demand for

territorial integrity in ukraine goes completely against what vladimir putin said literally a couple of days before the peace summit. he said that russia would only -- that the war will continue until ukraine withdraws from the four promises -- provinces, sorry, that russian claims to have annexed since the start of the war, but of course kyiv and the western allies said that that is not a peace offering, that is a request for surrender. now, as you mentioned, russia and china were not at that peace summit but perhaps what made that statement and meeting even weaker is the fact that the 78 countries that signed the final declaration did not manage to persuade many other countries that were not aligned with them and also especially from the global south. also no country offered to be a host for a second perhaps follow-up peace summit, perhaps this peace summit in switzerland could be summarized with the words of the switzerland's

president, she said in the final -- in her closing remarks that the road to peace is still long and challenging, frances. >> claudio lavanga, thank you. let's turn to greece where a missing american has been found dead. the body of a tourist was found on a fairly remote beach. the victim has not been identified but this is the latest in a string of recent cases in which tourists on the greek islands have died or gone missing. the search continues for retired california deputy albert cal abet, he was reported missing tuesday after he went on a solo hike that was expected to take four hours. greece is in the grips of a heat wave that has forced some tourist sites and public schools to close. princess kate is back on the job this morning amid her cancer battle. this weekend she made her first public appearance since announcing her diagnosis in march. the princess of wales attended the trouping of the color which is one of the biggest events of the year in the royal calendar.

it's when hundreds of soldiers mark the official birthday of the king. the princess also gave an update on her health battle, saying she is making good progress. some summer fun took a frightening turn for guests at oaks amusement park in portland, oregon, after a ride malfunctioned leaving 28 people hanging upside down for half an hour. riders were manually lowered and medically evaluated with no reports of injuries. the ride will remain closed until further notice. much of the country is bracing for scorching heat this week. nbc meteorologist michelle grossman is tracking the latest. hi, michelle. >> thy there, frances. that's going to be a big story this week, all week long coast to coast temperatures into the 90s, into the 100s in many spots. also tleefr weather portions of the midwest into the plains this morning. back to the west, northern parts of the rockies will see accumulating snow, we have winter storm warnings there. down to the south we're watching tropical moisture moving along the gulf coast. we could see 2 to 3 inches of rain, up to 5 and even 8 inches
