high stakes rematch. plus, governor newsom getting ready to make his state of the state address tomorrow ahead the funding cuts that could soon be coming for several state programs. also, we're about a month away from the olympics. olympic teams are taking matters into their own hands. the items many will now be bringing with them that undercuts organizers plans to cut carbon emissions. this is today in the bay. here we go monday morning. good morning to you. i'm marcus washington and i'm ginger conejero saab laura garcia is off this morning. now we're going to check in with mike in just a moment to get a look at those roads. but first we're going to start off with our forecast. meteorologist kari hall is going to give us what we are going to see. this morning. yeah it's been such a warm weekend. and it's going to be coming down a few degrees as we go into today. we're right now anywhere from 50 in san rafael to 63 degrees in san jose as
5:02 am
we're getting this new week started and we are going to see our temperatures headed for the mid 60s in san francisco, we'll be in the low 90s in concord. so you can see the range and temperatures pretty widespread across the bay area and that's going to continue today up to 93 in fairfield. but we're not talking about triple digits here for once. and san jose will reach a high of 85 degrees. we are going to come down a couple of degrees tomorrow, and that will be the trend through the middle of the week. we'll talk more about that. and also one concern i have in this forecast coming up in a few minutes. mike, right now you're tracking an alert. we are. kari, this crash reported about 345 in the morning. half of northbound 101 is blocked. three lanes are blocked. we hear that actually more than half because there's only two lanes available right now. traveling north past third. this is through san mateo. here's a critical factor. you can see it from the southbound side i'm told. and so that will be a distraction. no slowing just yet. traffic is very light around the bay. it may also, if
5:03 am
it lasts long enough, be an issue for folks coming across the bay. it's just north of the san mateo bridge, so that might affect folks heading into the city. if it sticks around long enough. and that might cause a shift over toward the bay bridge. everything around the bay outside of that portion of 101 is moving very well, but we'll watch to see as how it takes. i'll keep reporting about the progress and we'll see if that does impact folks. and at least two of our bridges. back to you. all right. thanks mike. well, as you heard kari say, another hot day and another hot day for potential wildfires as firefighters finish their work on the point fire. this is in sonoma county today in the bay's bob redell joins us live from the east bay. and bob berkeley firefighters will be concerned throughout the morning and into the day. they'll be working throughout the east bay foothills. good morning to ginger and marcus. but people should not be alarmed. this is just a drill. as you can see on this map, firefighters from the

berkeley fire department and other agencies, they'll participate in wildfire fire training at three locations grizzly peak, tilden regional park and kensington, the department says. don't be surprised to see firefighters in yellow uniforms in those hills, so there's no need to call 911. again, this is just an exercise. these are annual drills that are happening tomorrow, wednesday, friday between 830 in the morning and 230 in the afternoon. now we are keeping an eye on two wildfires up north in sonoma county. you got the firefighters who are close to containing the point fire, which has burned more than 1200 acres between geyserville and las lomas. one firefighter was hurt. three structures were destroyed, the flames damaged two others. that fire now is 90% contained. and then the sites fire, which is burning north of sacramento in colusa county. it's 48% contained and at just over 19,000 acres. now, unfortunately

for us, california wildfires are a part of life and so is the smoke that accompanies it and the hot weather that precedes it. but the heat and smoke has never prompted an emergency response from the federal government, just the fires themselves. so a number of environmental, labor and health care groups are trying to change that. you might recall last week that they started trying to pressure fema to declare extreme heat and wildfire smoke as major disasters, which could then give states, cities and counties money to better prepare with, for example, new cooling centers and an air filtration system in places like schools reporting live here in the east bay bob redell today in the bay. all right, bob, thank you. and a reminder as we continue to navigate this year's wildfire season, a great resource to have is our free nbc bay area app. it will send the latest breaking news straight to your phone. you can also find it on your local app store. well, turning to a

lightning in there. so that's the concern that we have between this evening and early tomorrow morning. that potential that we could see some lightning developing and that will increase our fire danger as we go into the next couple of days. the sea breeze returns with some better air quality and a cooling trend through the end of the week. so a lot of changes here. today. we're looking at temperatures ranging from mid 60s in san francisco to still some low 90s for the inland valleys. and we'll talk about that cooler air coming up. mike, you've been trying to find us some lower places. lower prices. yeah. much like the temperatures not down enough for a lot of people, but, you know, a little bit. right. we'll take that. we don't have much change, but the bay's best prices are still in alameda county. fremont leads the list today with 395 at vargas on grimmer boulevard here, a new low in san jose by a few cents 405 at platinum gas, the one on tully road and in san francisco's best is 454. you look for national petroleum on cesar chavez street and also

we do have some cooling air in our forecast. a slightly cooler temperatures coming our way as we are waking up to an all clear sky this morning in san francisco, something we haven't seen a lot of lately. and that's what's kept those temperatures cooler along the coastline. looking at our temperatures starting out in the low 50s right now, it's in the upper 40s in much of the north bay, and it's 68 in martinez. one of the warmer spots. and 69 in los gatos. so already a wide range of temperatures. let's get a look at our highs for this afternoon. we're expecting it to reach up to about 80 for milpitas, 85 in san jose. but we're still pretty warm in morgan hill with highs in the low 90s and some mid 90s for antioch in danville for today, 91 degrees. but if you're in oakland, you're staying in the 70s and we're in the low 60s for daly city and half moon bay and palo alto, 82 degrees, and we're in the low 70s in the mission

district in downtown and san francisco, breezy wind and also ranging from mid 60s in bodega bay to upper 90s for ukiah. so really, depending on where you are is the kind of weather you've had. we're all going to get a cool down as we head toward the middle of the week, and by wednesday into thursday, we're going to see those temperatures even in the inland areas, only in the low 80s. one thing i'm watching today with the warmer temperatures will be the risk of some dry lightning. we talked about that a little bit earlier, but if we don't get any thunderstorms firing up across the region, things will stay nice and quiet and then cool down as we head throughout the week. mike, that alert still continues for the peninsula it does carry, and as the commute builds, i get more and more concerned about the ripple effect. right now, west 92. we're starting to see more volume of traffic. no major issues and not a lot of brake tapping, just lane shifting. folks are kind of just want to do that as they're coming across 92. but then on the peninsula we have a bigger backup starting to

form. it may get spread out. we don't know. there may be some changes because there are changes in the speed sensors for this crash. overturned box truck. but the last i heard only two lanes were opened northbound 101 at third. if that ripples back and does impact folks coming across in a few hours, about an hour from now, we're going to see traffic shifting over toward the bay bridge. and that could compound things out of oakland. so far, not a problem. we'll continue to track that. of course. you got

the insurance industry say researching for a new policy drags on? well, ask your old company if they'll keep you. computers are making some insurance industry decisions. well, the data they chew on might change. so as those 75 days tick away, call your old insurance company and ask them, will you keep me? as a last resort? you might have to go to what's called the california fair plan. it's expensive and it only covers fire. you'll likely need a separate policy for things like break ins and leaks settling that could take days or weeks. so that's why it's so important to get started early, get shopping right away. well, did you fail it? a 3.2 up north in cobb. this is north of hillsborough. this is near the geysers at this point, we have any reports of any damage or anyone being hurt. but of course, we will continue to monitor this. but a 3.2 this in cobb, north of hillsborough will continue to monitor that and bring you updates throughout the show. well, 527 right now and

past this without any issues. so far not impacting the folks as they're on the san mateo bridge. but if you take the san mateo bridge across and into san francisco right now, your options are you can actually go up to the bay bridge and through the maze and over toward the toll plaza itself. not really any backup just yet, but that should start to form if this last much longer on the peninsula, there could be the shift. no injuries are reported. that could be a factor, as folks do travel in towards san francisco now looking ahead, because traffic is so light right now, we have typical patterns for the north bay. and i want to remind folks in the city that at chase center, there will be an event. it's a concert. maggie rogers i know tony, our friend tony here in the studio, is a big fan of maggie, and we're looking at traffic right now. not a big deal, and it probably shouldn't impact the volume, except for the 280 extension. as you head up towards chase center back to you. thanks a lot, mike. olympic teams are coming together next here on today in the bay. the us olympic trials continue tonight. and ahead we're going to look at some of the dazzling performances on the track and lots going on in politics. it's going to be a busy week. we've

5:50 am
traditional imaging. that fingerprint can consist of up to 1800 mutations that are unique to that tumor. we then take that and create a personalized test for that patient that can detect that fingerprint in the blood. and that's what allows us to detect these very small traces of cancer. such a big part of survivorship, detecting breast cancer, a recurrence 15 months early gives patients and their doctors more time to develop a treatment plan. and on the other hand, researchers say that the test is accurate enough that if it says your cancer free, you can believe it right now. the findings apply only to breast cancer and other tumor cancers as well. the fastest woman in the world officially making a run for gold. now sha'carri starts to wind up if she goes past jefferson sha'carri richardson. oh yeah, she was on fire this weekend. sha'carri richardson qualifying for the olympic games on saturday. the track star took the top spot in

we've had a lot of fog and temperatures there only in the 60s. meanwhile, in the valleys, it's been very hot. here's something that may break the heat for the inland areas. we're going to see a surge of moisture coming in from the mid-levels of the atmosphere. it's caused a few lightning strikes just off the coast around la, and that will be heading northward into the bay area later on. this evening. so we're just going to see an increase in a few more clouds as we go into the afternoon. into the evening, we can see the clouds kind of lifting northward. that's that moisture that we'll see, and the possibility that we could see some lightning strikes with that very humid air. what happens is when we get thunderstorms, dry air feeds into that, and you get a lightning strike that can come out of that. but then the dry air evaporates. the rain. so you may hear some claps of thunder. you may see some lightning. the lightning reaches the ground, but the rain does not. and that
