with the weather and that dangerous heat wave that continues to grip a huge swath of this country. 125 million people are waking up under some kind of heat alert this morning. highs 10 to 20 degrees above the average in some areas. >> meantime, some residents in south texas are bracing for beryl. heavy rain, storm surge and damaging winds are all a possibility for south texas by the end of the weekend. >> these extreme weather conditions coming amid a major travel weekend. this is a large look at hartsfield airport. some experts expect sunday to be the busiest day of the entire summer. we've got it all covered for you this morning, including dylan dreyer's full forecast this morning.

we start with priscilla thompson, who is in texas. good morning. >> reporter: good morning. pools like this one will be in high demand today. already here in houston, it is in the 80s, and it will creep up into the 90s by the end of the day. with the heat index and the humidity, it will feel more like 105 degrees. meanwhile, along the texas coast, folks are feeling the heat and also bracing for a potential hurricane. this morning as hurricane beryl continues its path, folks in south texas are preparing, keeping an eye on the storm as it threatens to come ashore on the u.s. mainland, too. >> we will move all the stuff on the dock that's loose or might be blown away. >> reporter: the southwest like the rest of the country, of the country, already deal extreme weather. more than 125 million americans under heat alerts. >> it has been swelters.

>> reporter: this weekend from the pacific northwest to arizona, in order highs. as parts of california could set all-time records. the scorching heat also hampering efforts to contain the 3,500 acre thompson fire. >> we're in 110, so that takes a huge toll on fire workers working when it is this hot. >> reporter: in san jose, the heat wave is being blamed on the death of a homeless person. the mayor writing, this was an avoidable tragedy. experts say extreme heat poses a risk to the body, including heart attacks. >> you get dehydrated and put more stress on the body. >> reporter: some cities canceling 4th of july fireworks shows and parades. >> it is too dangerously hot. >> reporter: driving heat index values as high as 112 degrees as americans head into the weekend feeling the holiday heat wave. that will be true out west where the national weather service is warning of a prolonged extreme heat event that could last up to

12 days. that would be the longest stretch in nearly two decades. >> priscilla thompson for us there in texas. thank you. we move to the july 4th travel rush as a record number of americans have been hitting the road all week long. priya, how is it looking? >> reporter: hey, laura. yeah, more than 28 million people are expected to pass through tsa check points over the extended 10-day holiday travel period, which is expected to end in a few days with more than three million travelers hitting the road this sunday which experts predict will be the peak of july 4th travel. american airlines is saying this is expected to be their busiest travel day of the entire summer. hopper says the busiest airports will be denver, dallas and fort

worth and right here in atlanta. if you have been to a report recently, 12 of the top 15 busiest travel days ever recorded by the tsa have all occurred since mid-may. that means lines, lines and more lines. if you are planning on heading to an airport, make sure you get here early, pack some snacks and as we love to say a little bit of patience as we navigate your way to your gate. >> always have snacks for sure. what about those going by road? what should they prepare for? >> reporter: absolutely. there are massive numbers of people hitting the roads. 60 million were projected to travel by car this holiday travel week. that's up more than three million more than last year. there are two reasons for this surge. one is the prices at the pump are lower than they have been in previous years and they are forecasted to drop as well as the flexibility of more remote work schedules.

if you are looking to book that last-minute rental car, the cities with the highest demand this week. all in all aaa is forecasting there will be more than six million travelers this year compared to before the pandemic, laura. >> priya, thanks so much. lots of folks on the road. lots of folks taking flights. dylan dreyer in for al this morning. it looks like, based on what i see behind you, there could be trouble. >> we could see possibly delays at the airports. minneapolis, saint paul, denver. same down through atlanta. we could see pockets of heavier rain that could cause delays, too. now let's focus on the heat. we have the west heat that is dry and very intense and long lasting. all through next week, we are looking for the high temperatures to stay, if not breaking records, possibly breaking all-time record temperatures. and then the heat and humidity

from the south will push into the southeast creates dangerous conditions for being outside too long. portland 100 degrees today. reading, california 118 degrees today. that's the all-time record high, and we are forecasting that for today. tomorrow medford, oregon 125 degrees. and the heat is going to last through at least the middle of next week. las vegas around 118 degrees. want to note that hurricane beryl just made land fall. it doesn't look like it will stay overland long enough to really rip this thing apart. once it moves into the gulf of mexico, it could intensify as it approaches southern texas on monday, craig. >> we'll come back to you in a few moments. to politics now, where president biden insists he is staying in the 2024 race, despite growing fears about his candidacy from within the democratic party. we are breaking it all down this

biden allies say today's events are a critical step. >> he's got to show it. he has to get up, show this sustained strength and take it on head-on. >> reporter: after the debate that shook his candidacy, any public appearance by the president is growing scrutiny, including this radio interview airing yesterday. >> by the way, i'm proud to be the first president, the first black woman to serve as president. >> the campaign responded to the coverage calling it absurd saying it is abundantly clear the president was talking about his record of running mates and appointments. his party, campaign, under pressure. in a meeting with democratic governors, who sources familiar with the exchange say mr. biden said he was seen by his doctor. but earlier that day, his team had said this. >> he did not get checked out the doctor. >> reporter: and later corrected that he did have a brief exam.

gavin newsom said the president needs to prioritize his sleep. many governors expressing their support after the meeting. but nbc news reporting this morning that some democrats say the president's debate performance was not an anomaly. one senator said the country saw what those of us have had personal interactions with him have all known for the last two and a half years. other democrats say they remain concerned. >> we need a reset. we need a source correction. we've got to acknowledge that this was not just one bad night. >> reporter: donors are a key group the watch. congressman don buyer told me the president appeared strong and donors left feeling better about his performance. meanwhile, she is withholding contributions unless or until they replace mr. biden on the

>> that's no small thing. all right. let us bring in kristin welker, moderator of "meet the press." good morning to you. >> good morning, craig. >> it's been more than a week now since that debate performance. we have seen the administration and the president try to reassure presidents that all is well. where do things stand now? what's next? >> well, craig and laura, look, the concerns over the president's ability to win, quite frankly, are growing amongst democrats. as we have always said, this comes down to the numbers, to the stats in terms of polling, donors and support on capitol hill. quite frankly, we are starting to see an emotion in some places, where polls show a dip within a margin of error, others show a wider gap. worried the white house could be out of reach. look, i have spoken to lawmakers on capitol hill who say there is

a growing fear he can't win. but the president does remain defiant. he says he's not going anywhere. and, remember, his justification for staying in the race was he was the strongest candidate, the only candidate to beat trump. the landscape has changed saying he's too old for the job. that's compared to 40 years ago. >> he has a big interview tonight. then he has a multistate swing, swing states. how is he supposed to get on the other side of this when he does just the radio interviews he's stumbling over who he appointed. how does he get through things like this? >> you're absolutely right, laura. frankly, the stakes couldn't be higher for each of these moments. he has to come off in command, both in this interview today and also in those swing state appearances. but allies i'm speaking to say he's got to do one more. they say he's got to show he has the stamina to serve another four years. that's going to require participating in a lot more

underway here at a temporarily sunny downing street, just hours after that historic election. the conservative party going down to a crushing defeat. we just saw their outgoing prime minister, rishi sunak, leaving through that famous black door for the last time as a new government and a new leader takes charge. this morning britain has a new prime minister. >> we did it! we said we would end the chaos, and we will. we said we would turn the page, and we have. change begins now. >> reporter: progressive labor party winning last night's election in a landslide. their biggest majority since tony blair won in 1997, defeating the prime minister's conservatives who have led britain for the last 14 years and are now reeling from their worst loss in centuries. >> i have heard your anger, your disappointment, and i take responsibility for this watch. starmer heading to buckingham palace for the traditional meeting with king charles before

taking up office at downing street. starmer, a strong supporter of nato and ukraine is now the leader of america's closest ally. his politics and policy closely compatible with president biden, but could be at odds with donald trump if he wins in november. >> i think he will stand up to what he believes in. with foreign policy, nato is the cornerstone of that. >> reporter: he grew up in a working class family, but was knighted in 2014. he will be the first knight to lead britain in 60 years. >> i think he feels a bit embarrassed by it because it takes away from the message he's actually trying to say. he's actually an ordinary person. >> reporter: a knight now stepping up to lead his country. as we speak, he is at buckingham palace meeting king charles, formally accepting the role of prime minister. then he will come to downing street. then we are expecting that first

phone call from president biden. >> wow, okay. raf sanchez, thank you. let's stay in england because there was an emotional wear fell at wimbledon to andy murray who is retiring earlier this summer. he was given a standing ovation yesterday after a double match loss. [ applause ] >> that tribute came just minutes after murray and his brother jaime were knocked out of the men's doubles in the first round. an emotional murray telling the crowd he does not want to stop playing, but injuries have taken a toll on him. might want to rethink your plan. evacuation orders are now in effect from a wildfire that doubled in size overnight in mariposa county, near yosemite. it started about 630 last night, along highway 49, and overnight, cal fire says it grew to 800 acres. it is now burning out of control, and there's no word yet on a cause. i'm ginger conejero saab in antioch, where hot spots from a late night brush fire are still popping up. i want to show you one right now. that's burning behind those trees. and moments ago, a woman from the neighborhood actually walked down the hill and stomped out another hot spot that began. this fire began shortly after 10:00. evacuations were in place after 1030, and contra costa fire knocked out the fire after 11. it is unclear if fireworks were the cause. we know folks are still setting off fireworks carry and that danger remains high. yes. so we have the high fire danger, the high heat. all

good morning. >> reporter: hey, peter. good morning. no surprise this place has been packed all week, with more big crowds expected to the weekend. experts are warning, swimmers beware. this holiday week end, hit the beach at your own risk. among the top concerns, a slew of recent shark attacks. this stunning cell phone video appears to show a shark swimming back and forth just feet from shore along south padre island thursday with a department of safety helicopter spotting one from above. this moments after authorities say multiple swimmers were attacked. among them, ashley silva. >> you feel like this pressure like someone pushed the back of my leg. and i just turn around. it's a shark. >> reporter: another beach goer hospitalized with severe leg

injuries. >> we do not know the species. we do not know the reason why this happened. it is unprecedented here. >> reporter: meanwhile in florida, a man from ohio bitten on the foot yesterday in knee deep water. some studies showing shark attacks have been on the rise in recent years. last month, a former pro surfer was killed by a shark in hawaii. life guards advising everyone to be on alert. expert tips, swim in groups. avoid the water at dusk or dawn when sharks are more active. if you encounter a shark, keep your moments slow and steady to avoid looking like prey. tens of millions are expected to swarm america's beaches this holiday weekend. officials warning swimmers to also watch out for rip currents. fast-moving strips of water that can suddenly pull swimmers out to sea. >> the most important thing is to relax, stay calm, don't panic. >> reporter: another concern,

the fire department posted that video saying it was just one of a dozen fireworks related fires overnight. police say officers also confiscated large quantities of illegal fireworks, while firefighters around the bay area had their hands full, including here in antioch, where you see those flames racing up the hillside. teams put out that grass fire that threatened homes on lotus street near hillcrest. the flames did damage a fence, but firefighters saved all nearby homes. not clear how this fire started. it's time to get a look at that forecast for us. meteorologist kari hall is tracking those hot temperatures today, and our microclimate weather alert continues for today as we deal with the triple digit highs for a lot of our inland valleys, santa rosa will see a high of 101 degrees. but we are getting some relief in san francisco and near the coastline as the fog returns. will be in the 70s there. unfortunately, the heat is extending into our weekend both saturday and sunday. we're looking at more of the same temperatures, but not seeing as many highs over 100 degrees for

this has certainly been quite the week. out west, it is hot and dry, but it is dangerous. you can dehydrate really quickly. you want to limit your time outdoors in the peak heat of the day. down in the south, the hottest temperatures and the highest humidity now shifts farther to the east into alabama and georgia, mississippi and the carolinas where we have the dangerous heat and humidity. this ridge in the jet stream out west. that's why it is hot on both sides of the country. we're at 118 degrees today. that also ties the all-time record high temperature for reading, california. in new york, the heat index will make it feel like 95. raleigh will feel like 111 degrees. this heat will stick around through at least the middle of next week. boise, idaho, 98 degrees. las vegas sunday, monday, tuesday, 117 to 118 degrees. just brutally, brutally hot. now, down through mexico across

the ukitan peninsula, category two hurricane beryl. this will continue to graze the peninsula where it will not tear apart the storm. it will likely restrengthen before it makes land fall in brownsville, texas sunday night into monday morning. here in new york city, at least three people were killed yesterday when a suspected drunk driver plowed his truck into a crowded park. it happened during the height of july 4th celebrations at a park on the lower east side in manhattan. police say the truck blew through a stop sign before jumping the sidewalk and flying into the crowd. at least 10 people were hit. several of them trapped under that truck. that say the driver appeared to have alcohol on his breath. witnesses held him there at the scene until police arrived. now to a major headline from overseas where u.s. officials

beavis, obviously. besides sun block, is there anything else we need to be doing? >> we spend a lot of time talking about how to treat your sunburn. today we will talk about preventing sunburn. it starts with sun block. what you are looking for is something called broad spectrum. that will cover uva as well as uvb rays. you want it to have an spf of at least 30. and it should be what's called water resistant. >> okay. >> nothing is fully waterproof. you want to reapply every two hours and especially after sweating or swimming. you can even reapply more frequently. a lot of people ask sunscreen or insect repellent first. it is always sunscreen first and insect repellant on top. sunscreen is supposed to last about three years. if you look at the date and it is a little passed that or it changes consistency or color. change that one out. we always say light colored or lightweight. believe it or not, dark colors and bright colors are better for

keeping out the sun. you don't want to go for your run at noon, okay? you want to get that stuff done early in the morning or after dessert at night. >> when we talk about sunscreent we say what's the best? >> the best sunscreen is the sunscreen you use. >> okay, fair enough. >> okay. what about heat stroke? how do you avoid this? >> think about exposure to heat and your symptoms as being on a continuum. first starting with heat cramps, that's self-explanatory. light-headed, nausea, you are sweating profusely. if you don't intervene, that could end up as heat stroke where you are no longer sweating. that is a medical emergency. your mental status can change. call 911. know those warnings signs. if you are out in the middle of the day swimming, doing stuff, drink a cup of water every 15 to 20 minutes. not more than a liter and a half in an hour. you can eat water also. so we're talking about watermelon and celery and cucumbers. you don't need to be drinking

♪ good morning. it is 8:56 a.m. marcus washington. well, new details this morning on the arrest of a man near the front lines of the wildfire burning in butte county. cal fire says a 61 year-old man used a propane torch to set a backfire. now, that's a technique fire fighters use to block a fire from spreading or force the change of its direction. investigators say that it happened on tuesday, hours after the thompson fire broke out. that man is not start of that fire, and the fire in question is quickly put out now. authorities have now lifted some of the evacuation orders tied to that fire, which is now burning more than 3700 acres. the fire is also now about 30% contained, at least four homes
