last? meteorologist kari hall is tracking the scorching weather as you start your week. breaking in texas. slamming ashore. hurricane beryl makes landfall overnight. millions are without power as heavy rain and wind picks up. plus we've drawn crowds that have been really big crowds ever since the debate. not joking. even that night in the debate, we had great crowds afterwards and so things are moving under pressure. president biden working to reassure voters he can handle the job after a shaky debate performance this has. calls are growing for him to step aside. we're live from washington with more on the next major test he is set to face as lawmakers return to capitol hill today. this is today in the bay. good morning to you. on this monday, i'm marcus washington and i'm laura garcia. the team
5:02 am
is back together just in time for the cooldown. meteorologist kari hall is tracking what we can expect, and we've been looking forward to this. even though it's just a few degrees, we will take it. relative. yeah, it's relative, because in the other circumstance would be like, oh my gosh, it's going to be hot today. all right. so we're starting out at 59 in dublin. it's 57 in san rafael and in san francisco. and we're at 64 in san jose. so this is the way we're starting the day. it will be slightly cooler today, but unfortunately the excessive heat will continue for parts of the bay area and a heat advisory. and it will be hotter again by the middle of the week with the valleys going back into the upper 90s and over 100 degrees. so right now we're at looking at a high of 71 in san francisco. so that's pretty nice. there we're in the upper 60s for half moon bay as the fog lingers a little bit longer in san mateo will be in the mid 70s in hayward 81 degrees. but the
5:03 am
farther you go inland, it's still going to be hot and will be 95. in livermore today, 99 in morgan hill, and there will still be some triple digit temperatures farther to the north that we'll see in ukiah and clear lake, and then into the day tomorrow. we're still looking at some milder weather for much of the bay area, but wednesday is when that heat starts to ramp back up again, and we'll go back to a major heat risk. and the potential of this causing problems, especially with this lasting for so long. so we'll talk more about this coming up. mike you're seeing reports of a truck that lost a tire in fremont. yes. so we know big truck, big tire. and it's in the middle of southbound 680 reported a few minutes ago. as folks are traveling south past dixon landing road, a good locator there, so there may be a traffic break. we haven't heard about anything as far as a sensor slowing or any imminent traffic break going on, but just the note if you're traveling south out of fremont and in toward milpitas, everything else is moving very smoothly along that route 84 should be open for the morning business. no problems
5:04 am
out of the ultimate. but you notice there's more sensors slowing than we saw all last week. so there we go. it's been a week since we've seen any really morning commute go on over in this area. so we'll expect to build for highway 37 coming up right now, an easy drive across the span. look at that beautiful view back to you. all right. wish we could say the same for the sierra this morning. mike, we begin this hour with developing news where firefighters are trying to stop a fire burning near interstate 80 off of soda springs road in the tahoe national forest. as of this morning, the royal fire has burned 169 acres. it's about 15 miles outside of truckee. cal fire initially said it may have started from a runaway campfire, but they later deleted the post and say the cause is still not clear. the state's largest fire right now burning in santa barbara county, and it is threatening michael jackson's neverland ranch. flames have now burned more than 18,000 acres since friday near the town of los olivos, north of santa barbara. one structure is
5:05 am
damaged. firefighters are making some progress. that fire nearly 8% contained. are you prepared in case of a wildfire or any other emergency? stick around ahead. at 525, our consumer team is breaking down what you should pack in your go bag. and even if you already have one, ready some tips on how to keep your go bag up to date. well, turning now to decision 2024, president joe biden still facing scrutiny over his reelection bid. democrats continue to fight over whether he should stay in the race after last month's poor debate performance. the president spent the weekend trying to reassure party members, donors, even voters, that he's got what it takes to beat former president donald trump in november. yeah. now, governor newsom, he actually plans to campaign in new hampshire today. this is on behalf of president biden. after spending the weekend doing the same in pennsylvania today in the bay's brie jackson joining us live from washington this morning. and brie, the president faces another major test when lawmakers return to capitol hill
5:06 am
this morning. that's right. good morning marcus. laura. so during a phone call sunday, four more democrats in congress told their colleagues that they believe president joe biden should step aside. now, president biden is expected to call lawmakers this week after touching base with about 20 of them last week, including senate majority leader chuck schumer and house minority leader hakeem jeffries. the president is working to reassure democrats that their concerns are being heard by him. my name is joe biden. i'm facing intense pressure to prove himself. president biden campaigned in pennsylvania sunday seeking to fight off criticism about his chances of winning reelection. i've been doing this a long time and i, honest to god, have never more optimistic about america's future. if we stick together. but members of his own party have their doubts. nearly a dozen house democrats have called on biden to drop out of the presidential race after concerns about the 81 year old's
5:07 am
poor debate performance. others are standing firmly behind him. what i do think the president needs to decide is can he put those concerns aside? can he demonstrate to the american people that what happened on the debate stage was an aberration? i know what it's like to have a rough debate, and i'm standing right here, you know, as your senator. and i want to just say how i'm so proud i am to stand with the president, the biden campaign is still working to convince the public that he's capable of leading the country for four more years. i think he's done a great job. however, i think that now's the time for joe biden to be the statesman step down. i'm still feeling good about joe biden. i find it fascinating that nobody's asking for his opponent, who's almost as old as he is, almost, you know, mentally fairly confused not to step down or step aside. president biden insists he's staying in the fight, and
5:08 am
president biden faces another big test this week. he will host world leaders for a nato summit here in washington, d.c. that begins on tuesday. marcus laura, busy time there. thank you very much, brie. well, now to a follow up this morning on a bay area based credit union now saying that it has stabilized its network and is processing transactions. again, this all comes after a ransomware attack crippled the patelco credit union now service disruption started last saturday. customers are unable to see the account balances used. mobile banking and even cash checks. now, credit union says that it is now processing transactions and customers will soon be able to see their account balances in a statement, the ceo said in part, quote, i can't share an exact date when we will be back in business as usual, but we can see the light at the end of the tunnel end. quote. the company continues to reassure customers their money is safe. breaking news that we're following right
5:09 am
now in texas. we're about three hours ago, hurricane beryl made landfall as a category one storm. the eye crossed over a town called matagorda about 40 miles southwest of galveston. hundreds of thousands are already without power there. the storm is now said to be saturating houston, where there are big flooding concerns. we want to bring in meteorologist kari hall. you've been monitoring that. so how how strong is that storm when it comes in? well, category one is still pretty strong. and it's going to bring in a lot of big waves. they've had issues with storm surge. that's that wall of water that gets pushed up along the coastline as the storm makes landfall. so let's get a look at the loop of the radar that as that storm moved to the north, was able to pick up more energy as it moved over the very warm gulf water. it is moving to the north at 12mph. that means it has slowed down from that initial 2020 two mile per hour
5:10 am
movement that it was making, and the longer that it lingers over one area, it makes the damage even worse as it continues to dump a lot of rainfall with some powerful winds. and we're expecting this storm to curve off towards the north and east, moving through parts of eastern texas and then farther off towards the mississippi valley as it brings in more rain and high winds over the next few days. so that's something we'll continue to watch here at home as we deal with some really high heat. and we are seeing the heat easing up today with a minor heat risk for much of the bay area, temperatures in santa rosa and napa reaching 91 degrees today. and we're in the upper 80s and low 90s for much of the east bay. it will be as hot as 99 in morgan hill today, and mountain view a high of 83 degrees. so that's going to feel much better than it has recently. and we'll talk more about the ramp back up of the heat that's coming up in a few minutes. now, mike, you've been looking at some lower gas prices. yeah a couple of spots and we'll take what we can get right. new week a new best.
5:11 am
still, the south bay san jose is at 377. it's in the holiday spirit at the 76 station on tully road. remember last week, independence day, 76 contra costa county and 399 all around concord. but we'll let the roll call go. first national on clayton road today. that's in the middle right here. and meanwhile in mill valley the best is 419 at the arco on redwood highway. go ahead and give and get those reports here gasbuddy.com on the roadways a smooth, easy drive, but we're already seeing more signs of the commute than we did for most of last week slowing out of the altamont pass. so we'll watch the area out of vallejo and mare island 37 should see some slowing soon. kirker pass road there's a small crash going on on kirker pass road, and there's a little bit of slowing, just some brake tapping because of the volume that's starting to build just now. again, early for contra costa county. pretty typical north bay. no major delays. that's not the golden gate bridge, but that's probably the destination for these folks heading south. it's a good deal down 101. just to let you know relative locations back to you. not such a good deal crossing the golden gate bridge, though
5:12 am
right now. thanks 511 for you this morning. fresh fallout for boeing ahead for you here on today in the bay. the guilty plea the company is agreeing to this morning and the impact it will have. fafsa expected to give us an update this week about when those astronauts who are aboard a boeing capsule can come home. plus, moviegoers go bananas at the box office. the impressive sum the latest despicable me movie packed in. keep it here. you're watching today in the bay it's
5:15 am
all clear as we're getting started this morning, and the heat advisory continues, although it will be cooler today in spots like walnut creek, we'll see those highs reaching into the upper 80s, and it will be a quick warm up and a cool down. we may not be so fortunate coming in the next few days. we'll talk about that coming up in a few minutes. and i was watching a crew on the northbound side with the tail lights. that's 880 right near the tesla plant. they just cleared and we saw a lot of cross freeway traffic. i think folks going in and out for their shifts for the morning. so as you get ready to go, we'll watch those changes. look at that. southbound. they just had some release of traffic as well. we'll check the overall nimitz coming up. well good morning. very happy monday to you. you may have had the day off friday i did when we got those jobs numbers showing the economy is still strong, but investors are still hoping the fed will lower
5:16 am
interest rates at an upcoming meeting. we do get important inflation data later this week and the fed chairman speaks later this week as well. boeing on sunday accepted a criminal deal criminal plea deal with the us government, accepting charges its pilots conspired to keep important information about the 737 max redesign away from government regulators. the plea deal calls for boeing to pay an additional $243 million in fines and accept an independent safety observer. we also get an update on that boeing starliner still attached to the international space station this week. it and the astronauts who will ride it home are not stuck, says nasa. as we've discussed before, there's a problem with the capsules service module, which is not used in the return to earth. it's disposed of, meaning if they're going to figure out what's wrong with it, they got to stay in space. one nasa scientist at ames said. it's
5:17 am
like a problem with your camper trailer. you're not stuck in tahoe. if your trailer has a problem, you can leave it and drive home. but for now, the two astronauts are staying where they are plenty of food and oxygen, and their astronauts over the weekend. three nasa volunteers walked out of a year long isolation to simulate what it would be like to live on mars. here's the mission commander as she saw people and took a breath of fresh air. hello! it's actually just so wonderful to be able to say hello to you all. be out! also over the long holiday weekend, we checked in with steve endicott, who lost his election for parliament in the united kingdom. you may remember he was the guy who promised to do whatever i he developed, told him to do vote. however, the i told him to vote. there's the i on the left, endicott on the right. he used comments and ideas from his constituency to program the i. i steve he called it so he said it would always
5:18 am
act in the best interest of voters. well, he got crushed in the polls. 3% would not be a very good showing right? oh wait, he didn't get 3. oh he got 0.3. oh wow. guy got 174 votes. yeah. and presumably he was one of his own votes. i think you would hope so. you would hope. and maybe his wife and kids. that's a couple more cousins hoping maybe. yeah so not ready. show up. not ready for that just yet. all right. thank you very much scott. well gru and the minions setting off the box office fireworks about. to. blah blah blah blah blah. the fourth installment of despicable me dominated the top spot over the weekend, earning more than $122 million. we're told it took about $100 million to make the movie, so just after one weekend in theaters, it has already made quite the profit. we should note despicable me distributed by nbc
5:19 am
universal, which is owned by comcast, which also owns this tv station. but don't call me a minion just yet. well, you know what a lot of folks have been talking about how hot it is. will summer heat? well, it's setting records. in fact, june just became the hottest month on record for earth. yeah, earth averaged 62 degrees. that's 1.2 degrees above the 30 year average for the month. scientists say that the trend could send our planet into climate chaos. as we head near the limit set by the 2015 paris climate agreement. but meteorologists do say that there is a long term duration of extended heat, and we won't cross that 1.5 degree threshold. so wait, what? yeah, that's what you all say. oh i just read the numbers on the other side. we've been saying that every month, though it seems like we've been saying this is the hottest month ever. we're inching up the next one is the hottest month ever. and then the next one. and so,
5:20 am
yeah, we're just saying we're our records are just increasing, breaking records. yeah. unfortunately and we know how hot it's been in the bay area and it's nice to have at least a little bit of a break. even though a heat advisory continues. it's all clear. and we are seeing as we take a look at the golden gate bridge fog, it's back. it's going to help cool things down in the city. right now we're at 57 degrees there and also 57 in san mateo, and we're starting out in the upper 50s and low 60s for much of the bay area. as you're getting ready to head out. nice to have a cool start. let's take a look at gilroy and what to expect today. mid 50s. and it's going to be clearing out around 7 to 8:00. and it's going to be sunny as our temperatures go from mid 50s to upper 60s. and then we'll see temperatures back in the upper 80s. now the heat is not as extreme and so it's going to be warm and sunny but not unbearable. and then we see the temperatures starting to cool down a bit around 5 to 6:00
5:21 am
into the evening. we're looking at some nice comfortable weather right around time to go for a walk after dinner and we're going to see temperatures up to about 82 in fremont today and 95 in gilroy. and excuse me, livermore. gilroy will be in the low 90s today, and we're still seeing some hotter temperatures farther to the north with napa and santa rosa in the low 90s. and then tomorrow's also a nice break with temperatures mostly in the 80s and low 90s for the inland areas. and then 60s and 70s near the coast. so these numbers are closer to normal for this time of year. but then look at what happens on wednesday. the heat starts to ramp back up again, and we'll see more of those highs over 100 degrees for concord as well as farther to the north, santa rosa as well as in napa. we'll see some upper 90s san francisco will be in the upper 70s. let's take a look at livermore and how hot it's going to be over the next few days.
5:22 am
going from upper 90s to 101 on wednesday. and then the peak of that heat will be on thursday at 106, and then stepping back down for the end of the week into the weekend, where we it looks like, have several days of some milder weather. but i'm watching the potential of a surge in moisture coming in from the south. when we get moisture this time of year, it could mean some thunderstorms, so that's something we'll have to monitor, especially for this year. going into the next few days. looking at our 7-day forecast, it's going from low 90s back to 103 degrees by thursday. that's the hottest day this week. a little bit cooler for the weekend, but we're not going to see as much of a heat up in san francisco looking much nicer there. mike, you are seeing signs of that commute returning, right? we didn't see these signs. well, except for tuesday last week early. and then it kind of let up. this is more slowing than we saw even on tuesday last week, though, as it's moving over in toward livermore. so your commute coming in out of the altamont pass restored some volume. folks are back from
5:23 am
their week of vacation. lucky you guys. we're looking over here toward highway 37, though just showing those signs didn't see this until a couple of minutes ago, but it has started as we expect for the morning commute again across the mare island bridge and heading over toward the north bay. that westbound direction is starting to build in the area of the bay bridge, but not really at the toll plaza, so no metering lights yet, but we do expect them this morning. back to you. thanks so much, mike. well, next here on today in the bay nbc bay area responds. it's possible you'll be ordered to evacuate your home, work or school, so you should probably pack a go bag now. i'm consumer

family's needs. start by asking yourself this question. if you just have one, two, three minutes to get out of your house, what do you need to grab that is essential? let's walk through that together. using items that cal fire the san francisco fire department and fema recommend. start with a paper map to evacuate because if the power goes out, cellular gps might not work. you might want to consider setting a predetermined meeting point for your family and printed directions to get there, especially if there are new drivers in your family. pack medicine for at least a few days. include some clothing and shoes. comfortable layers would
5:27 am
be ideal. you'll want phone chargers, car charger, wall charger, maybe even a battery backup. pack some cash because credit card readers and atms might go down. consider a radio a flashlight, and batteries. add toiletries, plus some nonperishable food and water. remember your pets. conrad here has his own go bag, which has some food, some water, some medicine and toys to keep him occupied. so what else should we add? a first aid kit and a blanket. so should someone be injured in your family that you have some immediate way to give them some care? keeping some important paperwork is important too, like photocopies of your id as well as copies of your homeowners or renters insurance policy. we recommend you upload those things to the cloud for safe keeping, but you might not be able to access those right away, so keep those hard copies in your go bag. all good advice. all right. thanks, chris. got to do it. 527 right now. coming up next, the top stories we're following for you today,

kari hall is tracking what we can expect as we head into the week. also peak congestion expected on roadways as millions head home from the holiday weekend. the simple things you need to keep in mind as you head out the door. plus a celebration of life. the ceremony happening tonight at oracle park as fans come together to honor the late willie mays. this is today in the bay here we are monday morning, 530. thanks for starting your day with us. i'm laura garcia, and i'm marcus washington. let's get right to some of the news for today. first, new overnight cleanup underway after a massive water main break in san pablo. this is new video that we have into our newsroom. water rushing through the streets and into homes. it happened about 10:00 last night along kevin road near tara hills drive. at least two customers are without water and east bay. authorities say it's estimated they'll get it back at about 930. this morning. look at the
5:32 am
mess up. they've got to clean. it's unclear what caused that water main to break. let's check in with meteorologist kari hall right now because she's been tracking the heat and kari won't be as hot in recent days that we have, but we're going to see that temperature rise again. yeah, unfortunately, it's not over. we just get a slight reprieve for the next couple of days as we're going to see those temperatures coming down just a little bit, and we're starting out all clear as we get a live look out there in dublin this morning. it is a little hazy, as we do have numerous fires burning across the region and slightly cooler today and tomorrow. but the excessive heat warning and the heat advisory will pick up again midweek. and we're also still dealing with a high fire danger as we track temperatures today, headed for the upper 70s and low 80s. there will still be some 90s on the map, but we'll see this continue into much of the workweek. so we'll have more on this as well as the hottest day of the week in our forecast. that's coming up in just a few minutes. all right. thank you very much, kari. as she just mentioned, we
5:33 am
are getting that short break from the triple digit temperatures, but it's still going to be pretty hot. yeah today in the bay's bob redell joining us live from sunol. this is where a number of parks are reopening today. now, bob, i know a lot of folks will still need to be careful out there because it's still going to be hot. it is. it's going to be in the upper 90s as opposed to triple digits. so we will get back to those triple digits later in the week, as kari has been mentioning. so yes, it's still going to be hot, but pleasanton ridge behind me, one of the east bay regional park district's locations reopened actually yesterday, as well as roughly 30 of their other locations that had been shut down since last tuesday due to the excessive heat and the concerns over wildfire danger. now, there are still some restrictions as people return to the parks to hike, bike or do other activities. there are no open fires or barbecues allowed, only gas fueled stoves. people should secure their toe chains so they don't spark and possibly start a fire, and you're only allowed to drive on designated roadways. the temperatures have
5:34 am
dropped, the humidity has returned to a levels that made it safe to reopen our parks. and, we don't take these closures lightly. they're very important for the safety of our parklands and our communities. i know i wanted to go on a hike and, you know, everybody loves to be outdoors in summertime, right? so with the parks closing, i've been wanting to go, but of course, the temperature has been way too hot for anybody to be outside. and especially hiking, so i kind of looked it up before i came. well, carry a lot of water and, where where a buff that's soaked in water. last night in nearby pleasanton, the alameda county fair closed its gates for the final day of the year. unfortunately for the fair, a heat wave stretched through many of the prime fair going days this year, with high temps over the past week near or above 100
5:35 am
degrees. the people who run the fair say the super hot days did impact attendance, unfortunately, but numbers actually picked up in the evening when things cooled off. to address the heat, the fair staff increased the number of misters, water stations and sunscreen stations for guests reporting live here in sunol bob redell today in the bay. all right, keep cool out there, bob. and you know what? speaking of that heat record heat over in death valley. this is where it took a deadly turn over the weekend. those temperatures on saturday reaching 128 degrees. and that's when ranchers say that a motorcyclist died of heat exposure. that person was one of six bikers visiting the park. this is the badwater basin now. the other five people, they were all treated for heat stress. near lake tahoe, a fire grew to more than 169 acres overnight. it's burning about 15 miles outside of truckee, and what firefighters say is a remote area. it's off of soda springs road and interstate 80. concerns about spreading flames have led to an evacuation warning for a
5:36 am
handful of nearby homes. and our nbc bay area app really a great way to stay informed of these hot temperatures. you can get up to the minute updates since straight to your phone for any weather or breaking news alerts, you can download it. it is free from all devices. boeing is agreeing to plead guilty to a fraud charge and pay a massive fine to the justice department, and the accusations are boeing test pilots hid charges and or those changes to the 737 max from regulators and scott, look, the pilots from they hid them from the pilots as well. yeah, they hid them from other pilots. remember, there are two other deadly crashes of the 737 max airplanes where pilots involved did not seem to understand the airplane's software designed to push the nose down software place there. after boeing changed the design of the airplane, boeing will plead guilty after the government determined the company violated an agreement that had protected it from prosecution for more than three years last week, federal prosecutors gave boeing
5:37 am
the choice of entering a guilty plea and paying a fine or facing a trial on the felony criminal charge of conspiracy to defraud the united states. here's the ceo getting grilled on capitol hill last month with respect to the accidents where we were focused, focused, focused in the description of the changes. and they're big and they're significant across the engineering department, we're focused on preventing the design problem from ever happening again. the plea deal calls for boeing to pay an additional $243 million fine and accept independent safety observers in its factories. the boeing board has also agreed to meet with families of the victims. 347 people died in two separate crashes in just a few months apart in asia. laura. that was back in 2019. i remember it sadly. thank you. it is 537 right now. this morning, a south bay man is out of the hospital and recovering after he was hit
5:38 am
by a bullet which was fired into the air. it happened during a 4th of july celebration. he says he was in the backyard of his willow glen home near lee avenue around 1030 at night when he was hit all of a sudden, the left side of my face felt like it. something exploded. and, so i fell to the ground, lost my hearing. and major ringing. and then once i put my hand to my head, i was bleeding, bleeding pretty bad. he called 911. police arrived to investigate in an ambulance. took him to valley medical center. he says the bullet went through his ear lobe, hitting his neck. he hopes his close call will make people realize the potentially deadly consequences of firing guns into the air. wow well, let's take a live look for you this morning over at oracle park, where later tonight, giants fans will say one final farewell to hall of
5:39 am
famer willie mays. the team holding a public celebration of life. mays, you probably remember, died peacefully at his home last month. a legendary giants centerfielder and national league mvp was 93 years old now. tonight's event it's going to start at 4 p.m. fans must enter the ballpark through the willie mays plaza. gates that opens at three. the event is free for everyone. and of course, we will be streaming the celebration of life on our website, nbcbayarea.com, and you can also watch it on our sister station, nbc sports bay area. a live look at traffic across the bay area. all right. bay bridge toll plaza light, at least for the moment. it is that monday, after that long holiday weekend, people took advantage of. no doubt the roads are expected to be a little crowded today. maybe picking up if you're one of them. transportation data company intrec says the best time to hit the roads today. any time after seven tonight, the worst time between one in the afternoon and 5:00 tonight. here's a live look at sfo if
5:40 am
you're at an airport in the u.s. yesterday, it was likely very busy. preliminary data from airports reveal the tsa screened more than 3 million passengers on sunday. final numbers are expected out later this morning. all right. let's take a look at the roadways right now with mike inouye. yeah. good morning. yeah. we are seeing a light volume right now at the bay bridge considering it's the bay bridge. but compared to last week, a lot more traffic and inrix, one of our traffic partners telling us watch for those folks still trickling back into town. but we have enough folks locally that we already have the slowing for highway 37 and highway four more than we saw even on tuesday. i think last week, which was their busiest day for the early morning commute. we're looking at the bay bridge with a mild slowdown starting over there, and the look ahead. remember all the activity over at oracle park for the willie mays celebration of life? so there will be crowds around the area. watch for pedestrians. meanwhile, the rest of the bay shows a nice, easy, smooth drive that build coming out of the altamont pass. also same as same as i said for the
5:41 am
north bay. we have more traffic showing up into livermore for westbound 580 and vasco road now starting to dip in those speeds. a bit. a big note highway 92, because there are so many summer vacations going on for schools and universities as well, we're going to see a lot more traffic heading over to half moon bay, probably because the temperatures continue up. but there also will be road work going on, traffic control again for the area where they're doing the repair work near all the way over toward pilarcitos. so 92 will be extra slow this morning or today during the daytime. so watch for the crowd heading over toward that beach and half moon bay on 92. but right now, 92 shows a smooth flow of traffic. again, more traffic visible than we saw all last week. so that's indicating the volume returning. as we look at south bay, san jose is showing a little more traffic. no major slowing, but we'll check those sensors once again. kari there's also work going on for the lions. blue and the green lines. so folks will be working out there on the tracks in the hot sun today. good note for people getting up and getting back to work today. our microclimate weather alert continues due to the heat advisory that we do have today for the inland valleys, and we're looking at a big range in

our microclimates with san francisco starting out with fog and upper 50s, we're also in the upper 50s in san rafael and dublin, but it is all clear and sunny and 64 in san jose. as we head to mountain view and take a look at our temperature trend, it's going to be a nice day here, especially throughout the morning with our temperatures going from mid 60s to 76 degrees at noon. good day to take the lunch outside and then we'll see temperatures in the low 80s and then quickly dipping back down again. but it will be as hot as 95 in livermore today. 97 in fairfield. and morgan hill will reach 99 degrees today with highs over 100 degrees for clear lake and ukiah. in santa rosa today it will be 91 degrees and tomorrow's also another break from the excessive heat that we've had. but then going into the middle of the week, the heat starts to ramp back up again. it's going to be hotter and we'll see a lot more widespread highs over 100 degrees for parts of the south bay. the east bay
5:43 am
into the interior north bay. but we're not seeing as much of a change for san francisco. and near the coastline, there may be just a little bit less in the way of fog throughout the morning, and then definitely clear for the afternoon. so we'll be tracking all of those changes as we go through the week. i'll have another update coming up again in a few minutes. all right. looking forward to it. thanks, kari. it's 542 right now. an inside look at the booming business of anti-aging ahead on today in the bay. we'll explore the newest trends using worms to slow down aging. see if they can really help you turn back time. oh, okay. so chasing gold warriors star steph curry telling us how he's preparing for the summer olympic games. i'm going to tell you the advice i gave, okay? i'm just kidding. i didn't give him any advice, but stick around to see what he has to look
5:46 am
at our temperatures going from low 60s to 100 degrees today at 4:00 there will be a big ramp up in temperatures. it's going to heat up fast today and then other areas, not so much. we'll talk about it coming up in a few minutes. you can get on the move, try to flee those high temperatures and good luck. we're looking over here at the bay bridge. can't get away from this either. the backup, the metering lights were turned on
5:47 am
as i was doing the report. the last report now we see the backup quickly forming. we'll show you how the return of traffic is affecting your drive. coming up. thanks so much, kari and mike. it is 546 right now. president biden made an unscheduled stop at a campaign office in pennsylvania over the weekend. scott mcgrew is joining us now. and, scott, it was one of those unscripted moments that so many of his supporters have been calling for. they've really wanted to see that right. speaking off the cuff or appearing to speak off the cuff to his supporters in philadelphia, no teleprompter. biden promised a tougher attitude ahead, what his supporters call dark brandon, turning an insult from republicans into a meme they all like. take a look. i tell you what dark brandon's coming back. he's here. and guess what? the next 120 some days or so, they're going to get a real good look at who donald trump is. so the biden campaign and biden
5:48 am
specifically continue to concentrate that on that idea. the real trump, that american voters just need to understand how many times trump's does not tell the truth, what his real motivations are, and they'll turn against him. but of course, americans know trump very, very well. biden actually sounded a bit like trump talking about the crowds. he was attracting. we're drawing crowds that have been really big crowds ever since the debate. not joking. even that night in the debate, we had great crowds afterwards. and so things are moving. they're moving hard now. trump for his part, is uncharacteristically, uncharacteristically silent, allowing the news cycle to continue to focus on biden and his post-debate trouble with his own party trying to shore up support over the weekend on a private phone call for more congressional democrats agreed biden should end his campaign to allow a different democrat to run, presumably kamala harris.
5:49 am
this according to people familiar with the call of all of them. jerry nadler, definitely the biggest name. california's adam schiff was on meet the press sunday where he said he supported biden and encouraged the president to keep campaigning. though our kristen welker did ask him about vice president harris. and this, of course, puts loyal democrats in a spot they want to support. biden but also assure americans our vice president is perfectly capable of leading here, schiff i think the vice president would be a phenomenal president. i think she has the experience, the judgment, the leadership ability to be an extraordinary president should she win overwhelmingly. congressman, i think she very well could win overwhelmingly. but before we get into a decision about who else it should be, the president needs to make the decision, whether it's him. president biden will host nato leaders later this week at the white house. there will be a press conference, which, again, biden supporters have been calling for
5:50 am
because it's free form unscripted hour. foreign correspondents say a lot of nato countries, though, are looking ahead preparing for a trump win. trump bullied other nato countries, sometimes literally physically shoving the newest member of nato at the time at a meeting in brussels. it came after a speech demanding nato countries increase their military spending, which eventually they did. 23 of the 32 members now spend what they agreed to, up from just 6 in 2021. that was after trump was president, but before russia invaded ukraine. in fact, poland actually spends more than we do in percentage of gdp. perpetual laggards include spain, italy and canada. marcus. all right. thanks, scott. well if one new therapy proves correct, microscopic worms. yes, worms may be the key to anti-aging. that's just one of the numerous therapies people are now considering to extend human longevity. none have been
5:51 am
proven, but this morning today is actually going to speak with one princeton microbiology professor. her research found microscopic molecular worms repair memory and aging mice. and you think maybe someday that'll apply to people? absolutely, absolutely. because we have the same molecules in our brains now. today is doing a deep dive on breakthrough therapies that may 1st day help people live longer and better. and what to know before you consider trying one of these methods. that's right. after today in the bay at 7:00, there are now 18 days until the start of the paris olympic games. even before it gets underway, it will be milestone olympics. that's because for the first time, the number of athletes have reached full gender parity in tokyo. it reached a previous high of 48. women were first allowed to compete in the games in paris in 1900. in the meantime, the men's u.s. basketball team preparing for the games with workouts in las vegas for the first time.
5:52 am
steph curry is wearing the red, white and blue. curry has already accomplished more than most players do in their nba careers, but he says there's really nothing like the challenge to win olympic gold. well, i'm here with me and everything. just the whole olympic experience. something like you said, i've never had before. so i'm very excited about just taking it and soaking it all in. but the competition and the challenge to win is probably going to be as hard as it's ever been, and i think we're up for it and i'm excited to be a part of it. the opening ceremony takes place friday, july 26th right around the corner. nbc bay area will bring you exclusive coverage throughout the paris olympic games. it's getting really exciting. it's also getting really hot once again in the bay area. although, kari, you say we have a little bit of a cooldown today for a couple of days and it's only parts of the bay area that gets that relief, but we are in our microclimate weather alert as a result of the heat advisory that continues in the valleys today, and we're starting out nice and cool for many of the spots that you're
5:53 am
heading out from. we're in the mid to upper 50s in the north bay. it's 60 in oakland, as well as 60 in fairfield, concord and dublin. and it is a little bit warmer in san jose, but definitely a nice cool, refreshing start in morgan hill at 55 degrees. we're also seeing the fog back in san francisco again today, and that's going to keep the temperatures there in the 60s for a high, and eventually it's going to clear out a little bit, allow for much more sunshine late morning into the afternoon. but we are up to 88 degrees today in san jose, so it's still very warm during the middle of the afternoon. if you move over toward los gatos, it's going to be 94 today and much hotter in morgan hill with a high of 99 degrees. we'll also see temperatures in the mid 90s for much of the east bay, with concord up to 94 degrees 98 in vacaville and clear lake will reach a high of 105 going into the day tomorrow. we're still very hot mid to upper 80s in some spots, but it definitely
5:54 am
looks much more comfortable for the parts of the inner bay as well as the coastline. half moon bay will be in the mid 60s. san mateo 73. very refreshing temperatures there. but then as we head toward wednesday, we're all going to see a significant jump in temperatures with a high of 101. in livermore and 97 in gilroy and mountain view. up to 88 degrees and upper 90s for much of the north bay. morgan hill will see those temperatures remain hot through thursday. thursday is going to be the hottest day, but as we look ahead to the weekend, it's going to be much nicer with upper 80s and low 90s, but we'll be watching. one more thing. even though the temperatures come down, it's going to feel more humid with a surge of some monsoonal moisture coming in. it doesn't look to have a big impact on the bay area, but it may trigger some thunderstorms over the sierra, which could possibly spark some fires. and that's something we'll have to closely watch heading into the weekend. but here at home, we're
5:55 am
just bracing for the heat to return on thursday and the peak of the heat hitting us then. and mike, you're starting out with a look at the south bay. yeah. because again, the same story we've been talking about more traffic for your early commute. more than we saw last week. getting back to a standard pattern for san jose. same for vasco road. we're now at about 2020 two minutes, i think, from marsh creek down to 580 out of contra costa county. so the commute built there, there's maybe some fog across the benicia bridge. that's what it looks like for the notes from chp. but the speed sensors show your typical areas with slowing for highway 437 and the bay bridge. and then there is some fog here at the golden gate bridge creeping around, although it's right above where most folks are driving across the bridge, it will touch you as you're going through the robin williams tunnel. back to you. thanks, mike. well, happening now. san francisco police are investigating a shooting on mission street. it happened just before seven last night near mission and 16th. officers say that man was shot. this is video you're seeing now from the citizen app. paramedics took him to the hospital with life
5:56 am
threatening injuries. there's no word on how he's doing this morning or if any arrests were made. there is much more ahead at 6:00, including fire crews in the sierra working hard into the night. they're trying to stop this wildfire from spreading further. the push to get it contained in the investigation underway into what sparked the flames san francisco. so

this happened over at fort funston yesterday morning. firefighters say that that dog got trapped about 15ft down a steep section of the cliffs, and the sr-1 had to use rope to lower themselves down the cliff to reach the dog. the husky is carried to safety and reunited with its family. well, gru and the minions setting off the box office fireworks. about to. blah blah blah. the fourth installment of despicable me dominated the top spot over the weekend, earning more than $122 million. we're told it took about $100 million to make the

movie, so after just one weekend in theaters, it's already made quite the profit. we should note despicable me is distributed by nbc universal, which is owned by comcast, which also owns this tv station. the movie was the place to be over the weekend. you got to find somewhere cool. my mom took my son to go see it and they said it was really good. oh, really? yeah good. now you can go see it too. all right. look, thank them for helping sponsor our company. got a quick reminder for you. don't forget. nbc bay area. we're streaming 24/7. you can watch our live newscast, the breaking news updates, as well as local content whenever you want. and we're streaming on many of your favorite platforms. all you have to do right now is scan that qr code there on your screen, and it'll show you to how stream our newscasts. all right. now at six, the bay area heat wave reaches one week after some extreme conditions. a brief cooldown, but it's not over just yet. we're actually tracking how much of a break we're expected to get today, and just how much longer that heat will stick
