5:05 am
degrees once again. so there are still some spots that are going to be dealing with the heat, mainly away from the coastline. but as we go throughout the weekend, it does look really nice for much of the bay area so i'll be tracking any changes for you in the microclimate forecast coming up. sounds good. thank you very much. kari. breaking this morning. three released prisoners now back on american soil after a landmark swap with russia. new video of their arrival early this morning in texas. that is where they'll receive a medical checkup. those freed prisoners include wall street journal reporter evan gershkovich, who was convicted of spying in russia. but he denied those claims. the trio first arrived back in the u.s. late last night at joint base andrews in maryland. president joe biden and vice president kamala harris greeted them, as did family members. they were also greeted with cheers. former marine paul whelan was imprisoned for six years. he says he could not be happier to be home. we flew over ireland, then canada and into america and
5:06 am
then i knew i was home. so getting off the plane, seeing the president, the vice president, that was nice. it was a good homecoming. before the meeting, the president and family members in person. they spoke with him over the phone. gershkovich and whelan are part of a swap involving the release of 16 people previously detained in russia. russia received eight prisoners being held in the u.s. germany, norway, slovenia and poland, now ahead at 545 this morning, scott mcgrew will speak with someone who works very closely with gershkovich at the journal live. well team usa is making some serious gains in paris. here is a live look we want to show you of the eiffel tower. but if we don't have it, you see it right there. team usa scoring four more goals during day six. there we are, the live shot there of the eiffel tower. so day six of the competition there. we saw some more gold medals as today seven is already
5:07 am
underway. a bay area athlete who already made some serious strides in the city of light is hitting the water once again today in the bay's jessica aguirre joins us live in paris. and jessica, this winning streak hopefully just keeps on rolling on today we are on a shiny roll here in paris. we're halfway through and team usa just keeps getting on that medal podium. it is fantastic. yes, we have a lot going on today, a lot of opportunity to get some more medals to regan smith from stanford is back in the pool today. she wants to add a little bit of hardware to her stash that she already has, fresh off her silver in the 100 meter backstroke, smith again will go against the defending olympic champion from australia in the 200 meter backstroke. now she took third in yesterday's semifinal behind team usa's phoebe bacon and canada's kylie masse. hopefully, regan can add some more medals to her collection. okay, are you ready for some football? not football.
5:08 am
football as in soccer? yes, the u.s. men's national team is going to be on the pitch and so will someone near and dear to u. team usa's josh atencio will be going against morocco glued to his tv. and nbc, of course, will be cal state east bay professor matthew atencio cheering for his nephew. it's just really neat to see somebody that you've seen since they were a young kid, you know, on family vacations and hanging out in their houses. and then you see this kid have the opportunity that they've got to be on this global stage, which is the olympics. it's just a once in a lifetime thing. okay. going bonkers at bercy arena in paris. it was about gold for team usa and a historic comeback for simone biles. biles, in her wonder woman leotard. the most decorated american gymnast ever at the olympic games, has added
5:09 am
yet another victory to her resume, with another gold medal in the women's all around. she was all smiles. it came down to that final rotation, the floor, which teen? which opened aptly with taylor swift's ready for it. yes, biles was ready for it. she needed to be nearly perfect, and she nailed it. 27 year old, now sporting her moniker the goat greatest of all time in a diamond encrusted goat. as in the animal around her neck. needless to say, simone biles now has a lot of necklaces to sport. also making history, though, simone suni lee, the bronze medalist in the all around. if you remember, lea took gold in tokyo and with this win, she is now the first female all around winner to earn back to back individual all around medals since nadia comaneci. you have to be pretty old to
5:10 am
remember who she is. we're talking 1976 and 1980, and let's not forget that suni did this while battling kidney disease. now after this, i'm going to be running downstairs to go interview suni. i'm going to talk to her about the hmong community here in france. really having her back and celebrating her. also, what this year has been like for her as she battled that kidney disease and how she came back to get that bronze medal so very, very exciting for her. all right. before i go, though, i want you to check out this instagram post that i want to show you. it is of simone biles. now, if you know biles, she's four foot eight, but she gets 12.9ft in the air. yes. for perspective, according to the website, the measure of things that is equal to ten and a half bowling pins, it is taller than shaq. it is two times taller than michael jordan, and two and a half times taller than actor danny devito. now that danny devito comparison that one, i'm
5:11 am
not really into it because i am as tall as one. danny devito or even taller than danny devito, so i don't know if that's an apt comparison, but but i will say this, marcus 12.9ft in the air is just a tiny bit smaller than you, right? it's a little bit, especially when he's standing next to me just a little bit. it's a little bit and it's like seven. danny devito's over laura because i tower over laura. so i know it's like three and a half. danny devito's over laura. things come in small packages that they do. yes, i'm with you on that one, lady. i am so with you on that one. all right. thanks so much. that's a lot of fun. you need to rate the prime time coverage tonight as well. track and field events kick off including sha'carri richardson stepping onto the track for the first time in paris. this follows her disqualification from the tokyo olympics after testing positive for marijuana. then tune in to see regan smith compete in the 200 meter meter backstroke finals. it all kicks
5:12 am
off at 8:00 right here on nbc bay area. in fact, meteorologist kari hall is tracking how the weather is shaping up in paris for the next week of competition. i'm so looking forward to spending at least part of my weekend watching the olympics in paris, and you may not hear them talking as much about the weather, because it's going to be pretty perfect. not even an issue for those outdoor games, as our temperatures will be in the low 80s for this afternoon and then upper 70s for tomorrow. though there will be some more clouds overhead giving them some shade, and we'll also be in the upper 70s on sunday next week. the temperatures will gradually start to heat back up again at least for monday and tuesday. with those highs in the mid 80s and a lot of sunshine overhead, we'll be watching all of that for you and i'll have a look at our microclimate forecast coming up. for now, let's head over to mike with an update on the gas prices here at home. thank you to our own schiff kari hall. you know, we're going to focus on the gas being used across the golden gate bridge and the advisory
5:13 am
that chp did crossing over with kerry's department. we're talking about the fog. chp does warn about that, but we can see the lights right now across the span from time to time, we'll lose sight of them. no major issues. the crew should be clear from the north side, but the yellow highlighting, remember, throughout the north bay. that does indicate some denser fog there through petaluma. so watch the far north parts of 101 on this map as we're looking at a smooth drive throughout the rest of the bay, easy sensor reads. we are looking at a new crash that may be there in sunol. we'll get details hopefully in the next few minutes from chp. so far nothing on the grid, but it did pop up from one of our traffic sources. meanwhile, the tri valley does show an easy drive for these routes. 580 a little bit of slowing out of the altamont as is standard even on a friday. and over here, vasco road has no delays. good stuff out of contra costa county. back to you. all right. thanks so much, mike. well, we are moving you forward this morning with a first look at the future of artificial intelligence. san jose's mayor wants to use ai to improve safety on city streets. he's already secured some
5:14 am
financing to try it out today in the bay's kris sanchez. live for us this morning. and chris okay here. so explain to us how this all could work and what this means for our future. so i think the people who are going to see the biggest difference first are the people who use the city's network of bike lanes to get around. those are cyclists and pedestrians. the idea is to use the ai to take a look at those bike lanes, to determine whether there's any illegal parking or illegal dumping that could interfere with cyclists or pedestrians. with a camera and sensors, the city then can quickly identify a problem and notify police. that's the short term solution. but a san jose state engineering professor told us that the technology might also help with long term solutions as well. over time, you're going to start collecting more information about the behavior of the streets. so you're going to make a better decision about city planning. so
5:15 am
in a statement, mayor matt mahan said leveraging ai to keep our bike lanes clear not only enhances public safety, but also exemplifies san jose's commitment to innovative solutions. that's the statement, in part from mayor matt mahan. now, the city you mentioned did secure some funding. they got a $260,000 grant from the toyota mobility foundation to try this out. they'll also be working with a nonprofit to help deploy this, and then we'll see how it goes and what happens next in san jose. kris sanchez today in the bay, like it or not, ai is a part of our lives. all right. thanks chris. hey, it's time to check in on business headlines this morning. 14 after the hour with scott mcgrew. good morning. very happy friday to you. a big day, laura. we get jobs report today. more about that in a second. look at these two stocks. these are absolutely abysmal. this is sunpower. it told california government it's
5:16 am
going to cut hundreds of jobs. warned investors substantial risk. it's going to keep going. this is big lots if you're old enough. you remember when it was called mc frugal's, which was sort of ethnically problematic. it tells the san francisco business times. it's closing all of its stores in the bay area except the one on hillsdale in san jose. intel did, as expected, announced thousands of cuts as it reported quarterly numbers yesterday. huge hit as many as 15,000 people, though the company says it thinks it can get to that through voluntary exits and retirements. intel, recently the recipient of that multibillion dollar chips act money 8 billion money for factories, though not people. intel ceo says this is painful news for me to share, and i know it will be even more difficult for you to read. this is an incredibly hard day for intel. now reasonable to expect today's jobs report to be soft, normally smaller than expected number would make wall street happy
5:17 am
because it would mean the fed was more likely to cut rates in september. but the fed's already hinted interest rates are coming so bad news will be bad news. we'll find out at 530. there's a silicon valley connection to that prisoner exchange arranged between biden and putin. the russians are getting a hacker back, a hacker that broke into computers containing financial information about silicon valley companies like tesla. the feds put vladislav kadushin behind bars, sentenced to nine years, found guilty of information using information from quarterly reports from tesla and roku and microsoft to buy and sell stock. justice department said he made millions this week on our podcast, sand hill road. we talked to rob smith. he started his first company not in silicon valley, but his family's home of beirut. he says, you think californians are entrepreneurial? watch out for lebanese. we have this entrepreneurial spirit. i saw my dad do it myself, so i watched

5:19 am
reported that it will include a live stunt in paris and a prerecorded stunt of him skydiving. we should note none of this has been confirmed by nbc. all right, sounds like a showstopper, though if it happens. well, now, to a competition that may some may say it's a little more fierce even than the olympics. we're talking about who's going to play britney spears. yeah. oh well, you got the voice. maybe. but i don't know what the looks. we'll see. universal pictures, which is our parent company, won the film rights to her memoir, the woman in me. john m chu, the filmmaker behind the crazy rich asians and wicked, is being tapped to direct it now. britney confirmed her involvement on x, announcing she's been working on a secret project. michelle williams famously lent her voice to the audiobook of spears bestseller. one thing's for sure, they're going to have to be able to sing. so let's hear that again, marcus. yay yay yay. oh, man, i'm not even going to,
5:20 am
i don't know, do we put him in that plastic outfit and a snake. don't expect a call back. marcus so for you, it was oops. he did it again. keep your early morning day job. wow. okay, i'll stay. john chu, the director, like the son of the chef chu here locally. exactly. he gave a shout out to his dad. i guess on one he does. and people were like, oh, it's going to go crazy now. it's already crowded. come on. already been amazingly crowded. all right, so the weekend is upon us, guys. yes. and the weather is looking good for spots. it's going to heat up for some of the inland valleys and it's all about the microclimates this weekend. and it just depends on where you are. we are starting out with some low clouds, fog and drizzle in san francisco, and it's going to be partly cloudy. you'll feel a little bit more humidity today with some moisture moving in from the remnants of a tropical system. and this weekend, the warm temperatures will stick around with not much change ahead. so as we look at our live view in san jose, we're waking up to a clear sky. for the most
5:21 am
part. and then our temperatures for this afternoon will be well above what's what's average, but not breaking a record high. so in santa rosa, we're looking at a high of 90 today. we're usually on this date for august 2nd, seeing temperatures around 83 degrees. so you can see how that compares to our expected high for today and what we typically see. so we are a little bit warmer than we like even for this time of year. as san jose heads for 86 degrees in morgan hill, we'll reach a high of 93 for much of the east bay. it's low 90s, with danville today reaching a high of 94 degrees. in fremont, it'll be about 80 for an afternoon temperature, and we will see some more clouds coming through today as san mateo hits a high of 71. it will be 83. in palo alto and about the same as yesterday in san francisco, with upper 60s and low 70s up to 92 today in napa and 90 in santa rosa. clear lake hitting the triple digits. so let's head to walnut creek with a look at what to expect. now. this weekend
5:22 am
will be very warm, especially on saturday as we reach the peak of the heat reaching 94 degrees. we come down to mid 80s on sunday and then looking through next week we are going to see still some spikes in those temperatures, but looking ahead to next weekend already it looks a little bit cooler than what we will see. this upcoming weekend. so we're seeing a lot of 90s here over the next several days. and our morning starting out in the 60s when it is a little bit more humid or we have those clouds overhead, our overnight lows don't cool off as much. so we'll see that tomorrow morning. and a lot of clouds in san francisco throughout the weekend. but that will keep those temperatures in the 60s. and mike, you're updating two crashes out there. yeah, we had the one that showed up with no detail. now we have a little more south 680. as you're coming down out of sunland into fremont, you're getting a crash there. reportedly blocking one lane. but i see no slowing. and chp isn't there yet. they just got those initial reports, so we'll watch those speed sensors and i'll watch chp report there. but it's a smooth drive into the

south bay so far. mild build out of the altamont. no problems for the dublin interchange and the peninsula, of course, is cleared. the second crash we're tracking is one that happened over here. north 880 approaching fifth, which is now hidden behind the shield. but you can see green sensors through the area. chp had noted they might need to do a traffic break to move a car from the middle of the roadway over to the shoulder. i haven't seen any slowing. i also haven't heard about any secondary crashes, which is a concern we'll track oakland and of course the rest of the approaches back to you. thanks, mike. 522 right now, coming up next on today in the bay, nbc bay area responds the state just outlawed hidden fees on things like concert tickets, but we still found them. i'm consumer investigator chris kamara. we'll show you where and how you have new

got the sonoma county fair today. it's feeling a little bit more humid. temperatures in the upper 80s and partly cloudy tomorrow with a high of 90, but then some drier conditions coming in on sunday that will make it feel more comfortable, and a high of about 84 degrees. and we also have in san jose the italian family festival festa at history park. and it's going to be in the upper 80s on saturday. and then a touch cooler on sunday as well. and then for some cooler weather, there is the world dog surfing championship on saturday and pacifica there. we're going to have fog cool temperatures, mist and drizzle. a lot of fun though. can't wait to see the video from that. i won't actually be going, but we will have some highs in the low 80s today in tahoe. if you're going to palisades 83 degrees, lows in the low 50s, and a really nice weekend with sunshine and very comfortably warm temperatures. and mike, you are updating that crash in sunol. yeah. and the
5:42 am
good news is we only have one crash. i thought we had two. there were some couple reports for the tri valley and then it cleared to just again southbound 680 right around koopman just before highway 84 crash. may be blocking one lane. might be a middle lane. and that's why there's some additional slowing. it's kind of held steady for the last few minutes, but we'll continue to track that because this is the same time where we should see more volume coming down off the dublin interchange. if you take the 84 cut through, you're actually south. you join the 680 southbound past the crash and past the slowing. the south bay does show that first little bit. the blip we see toward oakland road. and that's pretty standard. no other issues besides that. and once again, not unexpected. kerry told you about this as well. tonight we have a game for the a's. but remember bob also did the report about the monster trucks over at the arena. that's tomorrow where oakland's warning we have another game a's versus dodgers. and i'm told people are coming up from la. big groups of folks. so i think they may be close to a sellout there. and also two
5:43 am
monster truck shows. so saturday will be very crowded at the coliseum complex. keep that in mind. and tonight olivia rodrigo will be performing over here at chase center. and so if you have extra tickets, call me because my friend cat, the producer, she'd like to go. all right, back to you. well, coming u today in thep

american allies were involved and the months long diplomatic
5:46 am
work that resulted in the prisoner swap that freed three americans. mr. president, i'll tell you what. i'm not as good as your families are, phelan avenue. they're all standing around the oval office desk here, and we just want to say how overwhelmed we are. you see there the family of evan gershkovich, the wall street journal reporter, wrongfully detained. we have evan's coworker with us this morning, paul beckett, is one of the top editors at the journal. good morning. paul. you have must you just must be so relieved. we are. scott. thank you. we're overjoyed. we're relieved, exhausted. exhilarated. and you know, that's just us at the journal. who knows how evan and his family and the other families who are reunited must be feeling. it's an extraordinary time, paul. i'm a i'm a subscriber to the journal. you never let us forget that evan was in custody. it would lead your stories. oftentimes, it was across the banner. you kept this in america's forefront of their mind. well, we knew we
5:47 am
wanted to create a landscape where successful negotiations could happen. and we knew to do that, we had to keep evan prominent. but we're a big news organization, but we're not big enough. so it was really because so many people in the bay area, nbc, so many places around the country, rose up for evan and spoke for him when he was silenced. we're incredibly grateful for that support. just amazing. and paul, you know, he was gathering information as reporters. do you know the president said to secretary lavrov, you know, our country? well, we're both adults. you know, we gather information, but we don't use journalists to do it. this is something people need to understand. the cia does not use journalists as cover. correct. and evan is not a spy. i mean, it's that he's a reporter for the wall street journal, period. and a great credit to secretary blinken and president biden, national security adviser jake sullivan, presidential envoy roger
5:48 am
carstens, they knew that from the get go. they really championed his cause. and we're incredibly grateful. and so happy that many others came out with evan. and families were reunited. so, we just have hearts full of gratitude. the fact that they charged him with anything was absurd. and i think you saw it play out over 16 months. how? yeah. and ridiculous as charges were. leslie. paul, i just want to ask you something i had heard, and that is apparently evan had to fill out some kind of form, some russian legal form, as he was leaving. and at the bottom, he asked if he could interview putin. yes. ever the reporter. so it's funny, when he came back last night when he was on the tarmac, you know, one of the people who went back to russia was a kgb assassin, right? germany freed up to make this happen. and when evan came out yesterday, he walked up to one of our colleagues and said, you know, i was hoping i'd be able to interview krasikov, but the,
5:49 am
you know, timing on the planes wasn't right. so he's been reporting the whole time. it turns out. well, a journalist always again, congratulations, paul. thank you for being with us this morning. we really appreciate it. you bet. thank you for all your support. we really appreciate it. now, if anybody could interview putin, one of the top questions would be how he allowed this to happen. so shortly before the american election, donald trump had promised putin would release prisoners for him. trump and nobody else. and while the most important thing is that the prisoners are free, there are political ramifications. vice president harris and the president and the happy families as they celebrate their freedom and the hard work of the american government and our allies. here's the vice president as we celebrate today's news, we must also keep front of mind that there are other americans that are unjustly being held in places around the world, and we will never stop fighting for their release. harris campaign, by the way, just announced it raised
5:50 am
$310 million in july. the most amount the campaign says ever raised by first time donors in a candidate in one month. in all of american political history. laura. so interesting. all right. i'm sure they're waking up very happy to be on american soil again. thank you. well, let's take a peek outside. outside at dublin. look at all the folks already up and out and on the roads on this friday. maybe they're getting a jump on the day because they can get a jump on the weekend. kerry joins us now. when you say you mean when you say that, it's like all right, let's go. yeah. no matter the weather, you're ready for it. yeah. and we're starting out with those high clouds in parts of the bay area. but that's due in part because of some tropical moisture moving in. so it may feel a little bit more humid. but overall with these clouds, as they produce all of the cloud cover, any rain just evaporates as it encounters some dry air just below that. but for the
5:51 am
sierra, it may possibly spark off some thunderstorms. we will be watching out for that, and the potential of some dry lightning where that rain evaporates as it falls out of those clouds. but then looking ahead, it's going to be warm and very normal for this time of year with our temperatures right now starting out in the mid 50s, as you head out the door in san francisco, san mateo, it's 54 degrees, but 60. in oakland, martinez and concord a little bit warmer the farther inland you go. and that will be the case as we go throughout today with our high temperatures hitting 88 in los gatos and 89 in east san jose, morgan hill, as well as gilroy, 93, and a lot of low 90s in parts of the east bay, concord, antioch, 93 degrees 92, in livermore and in hayward. today, 79 degrees low 70s for san mateo, while redwood city will reach a high of 80 today and 70 in the mission district. the outer sunset and the mid 60s and sonoma today, 89 degrees clear lake, 100 today. so we're getting a surge of
5:52 am
tropical moisture. the remnants of a system that was out over the pacific weakening as it moves in. that's going to give us the clouds. and that lightning chance. but then the high pressure is going to start to move farther off towards the east and allow for us to get our normal ocean breeze and the cooler air near the coast, helping to also cool off the inland area. so eventually we're going to work our way towards some milder weather and some low to mid 90s throughout the weekend into early next week. while san francisco for the most part will be in the upper 60s. and mike, you're seeing that bart now has a delay. yeah, we're hearing just in the last few minutes about a delay between the orinda and rockridge station so that will affect the yellow line if it proves to be an issue. there's some sort of equipment problem. about ten minutes delay reported. now we'll see if it grows or if it clears. meanwhile, the commute hasn't really grown a lot, just a little bit slowing for highway four in through concord. typical pattern for that direction. same thing for highway 34. watch some more fog through the north bay
5:53 am
clearing now south. 680 koopman. there's not a lot of slowing now. i think they've moved the vehicles to the shoulder. perhaps cleared. we'll double check that. but so far an easy drive there and holding with just a light delay here. not even a delay. maybe a break. tap here as you're passing by oakland road for north 101 through san jose. back to you. thank you mike okay so the olympics they are not the only big competition taking place this weekend. you see what else is happening. monster jam today in the bay's bob redell joins us live from the oakland arena, where those engines will be revving el toro loco bob. yeah. marcus and lauren, thank goodness i have a 800 plus day streak on duolingo spanish. no joke, because i know what that means. press the crazy ball. and it's this man right here who's going to be right. that was pretty good. hey, armando castro, good morning to you. good, good. so we've interviewed other monster jam drivers before. usually you have a history of motorsports. you don't. you were a fan of the
5:54 am
sport when you were six, and you. how did you get into this? this i just find amazing. yeah so, you know, i went to my very first monster jam show when i was six years old. you know, my parents kind of took me to these events, growing up as a kid. and i've always kind of had that crazy dream of becoming a monster jam driver one day. and here i am, fast forward to 2017. i was kind of fortunate to meet somebody within a company. and, you know, long story short, i'm here driving, competing as a, you know, top. you work your way in, and they said, let's give you a chance. they were looking for a hispanic driver. you're saying that's correct. and you've been doing this for how many years now? eight years now? yes. eight years. kind of travel the world. and, you know, be on such a big platform like monster jam. it's incredible. now that i can kind of inspire the next generation of drivers and, you know, the youth that come out and watch us, man. and like, i said, i didn't grow up watching this, i did grow up watching this, but i didn't come from any type of motorsport. so you came by it naturally. as far as once you got in the i guess you could say, you know, jumping in the
5:55 am
truck, my experience was kind of going to shows and kind of learning how the drivers were driving and, you know, the throttle rhythm and different things like that. so yes, that's my experience. so i see sparkle smash when your competitors is behind you. that's correct. and that's driven by kayla blood, who we'll meet in a little bit. are you intimidated by your competition? i mean, you guys, i see you out here. you're hanging out together. yeah. you know, i like to say we're friends off the track, but once the helmet comes on, we mean business. you know? we all want to win. we're all competitive, right? and. yeah. you know, just actually, the first time this year, this just get to debut this year. sparkle smashing is one of the more popular trucks. always been a toy. and now we're kind of turning into reality. so that's what it is now i see you've got some damage on the back. gives you an indication of kind of how violent your sport can be. so what happened there? i like to drive aggressive, man. every time i step on the track, i like to make my noise. i like to make my presence. of course, driving a big bull and the crazy bull, right? you have to make your presence. i like to kind of push the limits. these trucks weigh 12,000 pounds. that 1500 horsepower, the stuff we're doing with these machines is really incredible. okay, let's back you up, all right? because we're going to fire up. you got your buddy daniel in there, all right. are we are we are we at a safe distance? how do you even get. all right, here we go. get in here. while we're getting
5:56 am
this fire up. monster jam here at the oakland arena saturday, 1 in 7 o'clock, sunday, also at 1:00. you get to see armando competing. oh, that was amazing. that was great. awesome. hey, good luck to you. thank you. thank you all right, back to you. wow. that's impressive. that it is. thanks, bob. well, happening now for you, governor gavin newsom is declining to pay a pay raise. this is for the state. or this is as the state grapples with budget issues. this is all according to our affiliate, kcra, the california citizens compensation commission voted to increase the salaries of all state elected officials by 3.5%, which will take effect december. state records show that the governor's current salary is over $234,000. he says it's important to acknowledge that the fiscal challenges currently faced by our state breaking barriers on the world stage ahead on today in the bay at 6:00, our one on one
