our weekend here, we're wrapping up things with a look at what's going on in our satellite and radar loop. this is tropical storm debby expected to intensify into a hurricane impacting florida. as we go on into tomorrow morning. so we'll talk about the impacts we're seeing heavy rain right now into parts of tampa, and that will continue to track into the southeast. i'll be back with those details in a few minutes. keir, back to you. all right. cynthia, thanks. well, can you believe it? we are halfway through the paris olympic games. it is 3 p.m. there right now, and we want to take you there. live the eiffel tower on the left and the arc de triomphe on the right of your screen. and equestrian. raised and trained on the peninsula. traveled to paris as an alternate for the u.s. olympic jumping team. and now he's coming back home with a silver medal today in the bay's marianne favro explains how karl cook made it on to the podium and speaks with the trainer, who saw something special in cook from a young age, karl cook was
6:03 am
just five years old when he first started taking riding lessons with butch thomas in woodside. thomas says even at a young age, he knew cook was different than other riders. let's walk and talk. this has been a day. in this instagram video, karl cook posted from paris, he talks about being switched from an olympic alternate to a competitor less than three hours before the jumping event. team coach came up to me and he said, you're on the team. all because his teammates horse had allergy problems. so cook suited up and he and his horse soared over the jumps, helping the americans win silver. being able to ride for the us team is, you know, something. you work for your whole life and it's really something special. cook started riding in woodside as a young boy, training with butch thomas for 13 years. thomas says he knew cook was different than the other riders, having juniors and we've had a lot of them. it's
6:04 am
hard to get them to take a chance in case it doesn't work. kyle was completely different. he would take a chance 50 times. if it didn't work, he'd do it 50 more times until it did work, thomas says. now 33 year old cook has always been confident and fast. what he especially loved was the speed part of it. he wanted to be the fastest one in the ring. thomas says. he was thrilled and proud to watch cook win the silver medal in paris. marianne favro, nbc bay area news. sticking with equestrians snoop dogg and martha stewart stole the show yesterday at versailles. the longtime friends teamed up to cover the olympic dressage competition, and you can see they did it in style, wearing matching horseback riding attire, including show coats and helmets. and a reminder there are some watch parties here in the bay area
6:05 am
today at the fremont festival of the arts that starts at 10 a.m. in downtown fremont and runs until 6 p.m. and tonight at city center bishop ranch in san ramo. the lot, which is a movie theater and restaurant, will have a watch party for the swimming finals, and other finals as well. that's at 7 p.m. tonight. now to local news. a local family and their child were lucky to escape a fire that destroyed their home. it ignited around three yesterday afternoon at this east san jose home. it's on clyde drive right off of 680. these pictures showing the extent of the damage. flames also spreading to a neighbor's fence and backyard shed. a power pole also was damaged, leaving more than 20 nearby homes without power. pg&e is working to restore all the power by four this afternoon. there has been a lot of talk about the so-called doom loop in san francisco. it's when one negative thing happens
6:06 am
in a city, and then another bad turn makes that first problem even worse. people in the city are now trying to fight back at that reputation, so they held the first ever love fest sf yesterday on larkin street in the tenderloin. former san francisco mayor willie brown joined in for the ribbon cutting. the goal was to support small businesses and redirect the conversation. this doom loop is alleged the pandemic was awful. it affected all of us. the problems in san francisco that we have kind of existed before that here in the tenderloin. they're not new, and today is just an example of where we could move forward. tenderloin business owners say it's important to put effort into changing the narrative and into getting the support of locals and tourists. they also say they support the efforts in the city to dismantle drug markets and to sweep homeless encampments to our north. now, where the park fire continues to grow, it is now the fourth largest fire in california state
6:07 am
history. flames have scorched more than 401,000 acres in less than two weeks. it's believed that a 42 year old chico man started the fire back about two weeks ago. it started in butte county and spread to other nearby structures and three other counties. nearly 570 structures have been destroyed, and that includes hundreds of homes. firefighters continue to make gains on containment lines. fortunately, the park fire is. we just received an update. the park fire is now 30% contained this morning, so that is some great news there. now to a nonprofit with volunteers here in the bay area. they are helping a man recover memories that he lost in the park fire and the campfire from a few years ago. we get this report from alejandro mejia mejia from our nbc affiliate in chico. the
6:08 am
nonprofit had volunteers from places like half moon bay, dixon and redding. perot told me the volunteers helped bring closure to him and his wife in their search to find their cat, who escaped the campfire with them out there was a chair that he loved to hide under because he was a little shy, so they sure enough found that he was curled, probably curled up there, and we get to, to let him go and get closure for that and appreciate the years that we had him. and now he's at peace. perot told me why both kathmandu and their other cat, riley, mean so much to both him and his wife. he had a pretty crazy life. he. both her cats were rescue cats and he had been found under. scotty's out there and we found in the humane society, and he just hugged us. he was family. so neither my wife and i had kids.
6:09 am
so he was our youngest little, little fur kid, fur boy. i spoke with matthew henderson, the norcal communications lead for team rubicon. henderson told me he heard piro's story and he, with other volunteers, wanted to help. i kind of immediately jumped on and sent it up. the team rubicon chain of command and said, hey, i found an opportunity that is very, very important and i would like to get out here and help this one person. a lot of times we're responding. we just did an operation up in grizzly flats, where we were up there for 30 days. we had 70 people a day that came from all over the country, and we helped a lot of people. sometimes it's just being able to help one person at a time. and this was one of those times where i felt, rick and his wife really needed the help. perot and his wife say they aren't the only ones who suffered the loss of both of their homes. their neighbors on both sides also lost their home in the camp fire nearly six years ago, henderson told me volunteers are working to find
6:10 am
important items for example, a memento from the home in the campfire. there's a mass of silver coins that they had in a bag at their house in paradise. the silver coins melted together into a clump around a piece of pipe. they had kept that as a memento from their house. henderson told me they had a successful day of finding important items such as jewelry and silver coins. henderson says the work is funded through grants and community donations. now to the white house. as anticipation builds for vice president kamala harris to choose her vice president for her presidential bid, six contenders have met with harris's campaign as possible vp picks. they are kentucky governor andy beshear, transportation secretary pete buttigieg, senator mark kelly of arizona, illinois governor j.b. pritzker and pennsylvania governor josh shapiro, as well

presidential opposition candidate, recognizing him as the official winner of the presidential election. the country held a controversial election last sunday. both incumbent president nicolas maduro and opposition leader edmundo gonzalez urrutia claimed victory, but tally sheets from voting locations show gonzalez urrutia was the clear winner, winning 66% of the vote compared to maduro's 31%. demonstrators
6:15 am
here thanked the united states for being among the countries recognizing who they call the true winner. everybody wants a maduro out of the regime of the government because it is not good for, for the venezuelan people. venezuela do want chang, do want change maduro in a peaceful way. so that's why we, we, we would like to and we need the international community to, to, to recognize edmundo gonzalez's, win. venezuela's electoral body is loyal to maduro's regime. it says maduro was reelected to a third term after winning 51% of the vote. also in san francisco yesterday, a rally against the war in gaza. hundreds of protesters rallied and marched for an immediate ceasefire, demanding an end to u.s. support for israel. the demonstration started at the

16th and mission bart plaza. it's been an especially turbulent week across the middle east. protesters say it's time to end the violence before it spreads into an even larger conflict. israel has escalated in multiple countries with political assassinations of chief negotiators, with bombing of civilians and of course, the ongoing mass murder that we're seeing in gaza. we need the united states to immediately issue an arms embargo on israel to stop this war. and the war, which, of course, started after hamas went on a killing and kidnaping spree in israel on october 7th, is now in its 10th month, acclaimed director and los altos native john chu is back home in the bay area this weekend. he was in san francisco last night promoting his new book, viewfinder, at an event with actress and comedian awkwafina. chu directed films

know joshua tree is gearing up for an influx of visitors ahead of the annual perseid meteor shower. it's expected to peak between august 10th and 12th, which is already next weekend. thousands of stargazers could see hundreds of streaks of light hurtle across the dark sky each night. officials, though, are warning residents and businesses to prepare for the tourism boom. if you're planning to go, expect traffic on the way in the perseids, comet orbits the sun approximately every 134 years, producing the phenomenon. all right, back now to our coverage of the paris olympics. it takes a massive team of volunteers to help make the olympic games a success. organizers chose 45,000 volunteers from across the globe. that's just a fraction of the more than 300,000 people who initially applied. volunteers have a range of different roles, from giving directions to scanning tickets, even providing
6:19 am
medical assistance. some speak french, some english, most say being part of the games is an honor. just heaven for me. i mean, you can't beat this experience. you really can't. when they picked me, i was shocked. i put it on facebook. i was like, oh my gosh, i got picked the volunteers also get to keep those cool uniforms while olympians on a global stage with thousands of fans can even get star struck themselves sometimes. wait team usa gymnast suni lee and jordan chiles had their own fan girl moment, even though they're super celebrities. can you guess who captain benson herself? law and order star mariska hargitay hargitay gave both gymnasts a big hug, congratulating them on their gold. the two are fresh off that gold medal win in the team competition last week, and
6:20 am
lee herself won a bronze medal in the individual all around. speaking of the olympics, people in the bay area got tested on their knowledge yesterday. today in the bay's mike inouye hosted an olympic themed trivia at the fremont festival of the arts, and the winners got some olympics swag. our nbc bay area booth also also featured a viewing lounge for people to cheer on bay area athletes in the track and field competition. and, by the way, fremont festival of the arts is celebrating 40 years. it is considered the largest street festival west of the mississippi, with more than 150,000 people attending each year. hundreds of booths with live music, arts and crafts, food and rides, people from the bay area over get excited every year. when i lived in fremont, i would come here all the time and i just love the flavors. the smells, and the sensations of the fremont wine and art

festival. it's a great place to be. on saturday and sunday. the festival continues today. entry is free and it does bring in a lot of money for those booths. organizers say the event has raised more than $11 million since it began in 40 years ago. the money goes toward local nonprofit organizations and schools. some bay area leaders went head to head in a grape stomping contest or toe to toe. it happened yesterday at the italian family festa at san jose's history park. five different mayors rolled up their pants to see who could stomp the fastest and look at that. i know that girl, that girl, our very own cinthia pimentel was a guest celebrity stomper in the end, morgan hill, mayor mark turner and sunnyvale mayor larry klein won. the winners were set to take on the reigning champion, san jose mayor matt mahan, in the championship today, but a
6:22 am
former city council member is stepping up to replace mayhem in his absence. it is much harder than you think. i was flustered and like 10s in because the grapes are a little bigger than, you know, a typical wine grapes, which are a little smaller, and you just get really heated and just start. you got to just like, yeah, what's the goal? stomp them all out in a minute, or we had to fill a mason jar. that was about this big, i filled it up to about halfway, but the sunnyvale mayor in my heat did end up winning. but i was competing against the milpitas mayor. everybody was so lovely. it was a great time, and it's going on there today, so good luck. if you're going out there. it was a great time. thank you for inviting me. today will be slightly cooler. i know people, we were under the shade yesterday there at the festival, but it will be slightly cooler today. low 80s i did want to start however, looking at what could be a difficult situation in the south southeast over the next couple of days. we're
6:23 am
talking about tropical storm debby at this hour already bringing downpours around tampa, fort myers and eventually we'll move into what's called the big bend area of florida, intensifying into a hurricane as early as tomorrow. so we take a look at the potential path here going into tomorrow morning. it is a category one hurricane, and it could possibly stall and create bad news for parts of southeast georgia and the carolinas. as we go on into mid early parts of our week here, 10 to 15in of rain are possible, including some tornadoes and really dangerous, even deadly storm surge. so if you know anybody or have any family members out there, give them a call. make sure they are up to date on what is happening. as we come back here into the bay area, what can we expect for our sunday fun day? we are starting the morning off. of course we saw that live camera san francisco drizzle out towards the coast. slightly cooler temperatures for today, but we will be heating things up again into the early part of our workweek here. and of course,

to start with some cloud cover in the bay area 62 in san jose. we should mix out of here as we go on into the late morning 910 going on to oakland. we do have the third game there in the series with the dodgers later on this afternoon. should be a nice and comfortable day there by the bay 55, in san francisco with our live cameras still socked in with that drizzle. so just be careful with the changes in visibility. how about we find some things to do? maybe a nice hike to round out your weekend. let's go up to muir woods in mill valley of course, starting off with that cloud cover in the morning and then mixing out to a nice 70s there in mill valley, 75 by 4 p.m. this afternoon. that sounds like a nice day in the north bay for me. we come down into the south bay. gilroy, how are you? we are starting our morning again with that cloud cover, but then we should see a slightly cooler day up into the upper 80s for our afternoon highs. but get ready to see some of that heat as we start to go on into parts of monday, tuesday, and wednesday we are seeing some temperatures 80s and 90s for today. that won't change
6:46 am
so much for tomorrow, although some places in solano county could get into that triple digit mark. i think the hottest day of this upcoming week will be tuesday, as we take a look in some 90s in santa rosa to 99 in concord, 88 in downtown san jose, 94 los gatos and some warm, mild 70s to some low 80s bay shore. as we take it on and plan the rest of our workweek here, we are going to see that blast of the heat just for tuesday. a bit of relief for wednesday, and definitely trending cooler towards the second half of the week. san francisco of course we'll see that morning cloud cover get a little bit of that warm temperature spike for tuesday. but then transition into some more seasonable 60s and that mix of sun and clouds. well, i did want to talk about our climate in crisis really quickly here. and maybe you've taken a health survey recently and it asked you new questions on the weather and your mood or any kind of natural disaster you might have experienced. well, scientists now from ucsf and stanford are

looking at march to december of 2021. in their new study, they wanted to see what groups of people reported feeling different after events like a heat wave, poor air quality, a wildfire, or even a power shut off. they found that more than half of the california residents surveyed mostly young people caucasian women, the college educated or people living in a rural area reported that climate change was impacting them or someone in their household mentally and within the last two years, people who sadly lost property were also much more likely to answer yes on some of the survey questions directly experiencing extreme weather events has been linked to anxiety, depression, ptsd. people have also lost money or had had to move. so these things further amplify the risks to our mental health experts in the study suggest more outreach and for example, more access to telehealth in rural communities and making new housing resistant to things like drought, flood or extreme events. we try to focus on solutions we can all take to

always. we have heard a lot about the supposed short list of people. she's looking at. what's the criterion for this kind of selection? there are criteria. there really are, because you just can't pick anybody. so we've got three. i think that are pretty important for people. the first it has to do with the simple compatibility, you know, are you comfortable with this person does. does he work for you in terms of just being able to talk with him and count on him, rely on him? could he become president and handle the job? a strategic value, that's another one. it's very important as to where he is. this has an impact on the electoral college. so we've heard a lot about pennsylvania 19 electoral votes and arizona 11 electoral votes. you need 270 votes to win. forget about the popular vote. you need 270 electoral votes. so that's important. and the third is simple campaign energy. how well will the running mate comport himself? will he be able to raise a lot of money in a short time? will he be there to match up nicely with, with the

president nominee's values. so these are the three things that are really important. and this weekend you can bet that vice president harris, the democratic nominee, right, is going to be thinking about things in these terms. there's no question about it. and as i mentioned just a moment ago, we've we've looked or we've surmised what her short list is, and you've whittled it down to, what, six men can you tell us about each one or what they bring? yeah, they seem to be the six. now. you could have a stranger come out of nowhere, you know, like you, russell, i don't think so. but, i mean, it's possible, but but let's go through these alphabetically, by the way. okay. andy beshear, 46 years old, on the young side. that's kind of good. governor in kentucky, a very red state. so does that mean he can maybe bring over a lot of people who are in the middle, or maybe to the right? pete buttigieg, another 142 years old, a transportation secretary since 2021 who never been elected to a major office, mayor of south bend. but is that enough? we

don't know. mark kelly, 60 years old, u.s. senator from arizona since 2020. former astronaut. got a lot of cachet there because of that kind of thing, jb pritzker, 59 years old, governor from illinois since 2018, worth more than $3 billion. that could help with fundraising. josh shapiro, 51, the governor from pennsylvania. hugely popular 61% popularity in pennsylvania. just don't see that kind of thing. and then, of course, there's tim walz, the governor from minnesota. you say minnesota. what does that matter? but the fact is, he's got that midwest mentality. so that could mean lots of good things for let's say, wisconsin, michigan, stuff like that. so here you have six really good candidates. and pritzker from atherton, pritzker from atherton. that's right. so okay as always dare you look into your crystal ball. what who do you think she will choose. the money is on shapiro. he outran biden. he got more votes than
6:55 am
biden when he ran for attorney general and biden ran for president. that's a big deal. by 15 points, he he outdid him. wow. okay. he won his election really easily. he he is the money guy. i think i wouldn't be surprised if i saw mark kelly, the astronaut, the hero, the former navy guy, and also and also married to gabby giffords. yes. right. a gun control and that kind of thing. she's a hero in her own right. don't rule him out. but the money is on shapiro. i don't beyond that. yeah. you see, well, i guess we'll rerack this on tuesday. let's see what happens. larry, as always, thanks for your insight. good to see you this morning. 54 past the hour. up next we have a quick look at the top stories. we're following on this sunday morning, including our olympic coverage continuing today. we'll tell you about the events happening later today and wh
