6:02 am
we're starting out at 60 degrees. it's cool for now. and temperatures in the upper 50s for palo alto, walnut creek at 57 and 54, in san francisco. as we take a look at our highs for today, we're ranging from low 80s in milpitas to upper 90s in the south county today. so you're going to feel that heat in some spots and even reaching 100 degrees in antioch and we're also going to see upper 90s away from the bay in the east bay in hayward, 81 degrees and near the coast. we're in the mid 60s in san francisco. it's in the low 70s downtown, and for the north bay it will be up to 100 degrees farther north. while much of the spots like napa and sonoma in the low 90s. so we'll talk about some slightly lower temperatures for the end of the week coming up. and, mike, you're saying the real backup is on. yeah, different than the first couple of starts we had with a disabled vehicle causing unusual slowing over on the left side. the hov lanes even had a period of slowing, but they've all cleared out toward their normal pattern. now you notice all lanes are

behind me here in livermore, that running mate, according to the ap sources, will be minnesota governor tim walz of minnesota. as i mentioned, vice president harris picking him as the running mate. this is over. pennsylvania governor shapiro, josh shapiro and arizona senator mark kelly, who were also in the running. so this is not been confirmed by nbc, but multiple other outlets are reporting this, including the washington post. and as i mentioned, the associated press, the unveiling of her vp. the official unveiling is expected to take place later this morning or at any moment will include a video message, social media posts, text messages to supporters and appeals for donations. and then tonight, her and waltz, assuming it is confirmed to be waltz, will rally in philadelphia, followed by a battleground state tour covering wisconsin, michigan, north carolina, arizona and nevada. the new york

one, but now it is finally time for her to gold. go for gold. she is just 20 years old. she is from walnut creek. as i mentioned, amit eller is a powerhouse. she's the youngest american woman to wrestle in the olympics now. amit started wrestling after watching one of her brothers practice, and then she has proven now, time and time again, that anything boys can do, she can do better. she is expected to medal more girl power this time on the ramp. petaluma skateboarder minna stess just competed at the place de la concorde right now, a few minutes ago. unfortunately, the petaluma favorite fell during the prelims and then that means that she failed to make the final. however, the 18 year old is still a bay area star and talk about some high drama at the final event for the gymnastics, right? simone biles going for her final medals, and instead there was a twist in this one. it didn't go to simone, it went to the brazilian

6:10 am
he certainly would be cheering him on for sure, because oregon is not a one by one bar. he is a very, very fast runner instead. well, whatever brings him luck. it worked. hey, there you go. gotta get those socks. new trend. everyone's going to be wearing spongebob. thanks, jess. yep hey, don't forget tonight the women of team usa compete for a medal in the ten meter platform final. and then several track and field events are on the lineup for tonight. medals are on the line for women's 200 meter final. it all is going to kick off for you at 8:00 tonight right here on nbc bay area. hey, kari, how are those conditions looking in paris? well, as we check out our forecast for paris, just like the bay area, temperatures will be peaking for the week. it's going to be a humid 86 degrees there with a mix of sun and clouds. and then these final few days of the olympics is looking pretty nice throughout the rest of the week. temperatures in the upper 70s
6:11 am
and low 80s, and then for the closing ceremony, it will be back in the mid 80s, but just in time for those athletes to leave paris, we're going to see some really hot temperatures starting to come back in by sunday. it's in the low 90s and monday we're in the upper 90s. we're also tracking some hotter temperatures in the valley, so i'll have a look at that coming up in the full microclimate forecast. back to you. thanks gary. it is 610 right now. putting an end to unwanted waste ahead on today in the bay. the north bay city trying a first of its kind experiment to get rid of single use cups and the business joining that cause and turnaround tuesday, a day after the drubbing on wall street. we see some positive moves. let's go out to the futures. take a look what we got now. it's not much 119 i don't think we can call that a comeback. plus the unlikely competitor joining the women's surfing competition. it's incredible. video you definitely want to see it stick

jose. a heat advisory in effect for the south bay. and we're also watching out for a high fire danger as the wind picks up and some of those breezy and dry hills, there will be a higher risk there. but at times we may see some hazy skies and we have so many fires burning across the region, including the park fire that continues. and we're also going to see at times some of that smoke coming in, depending on the wind direction. as we take a look at the one area that we have under that heat advisory today, we're looking at temperatures in the south county today, headed for the upper 90s in redwood city. it's still going to be comfortable with temperatures starting out in the upper 50s and mostly cloudy, and then going throughout the morning into the afternoon. it's clearing out and gradually warming up here. we're going to see those high temperatures there in the mid 70s, san mateo, up to 73 degrees. so nice and comfortable. also looking great in san francisco today. but as soon as you cross into the north bay, those temperatures will be
6:19 am
much hotter going up to 93. in napa today, upper 80s, low 90s for dublin and then upper 90s for concord. vacaville will hit a high of 100 degrees. it's comfortably warm in san jose with a high of 86, but a short drive over los gatos, and it will be 93 degrees and we're going to see more of the same tomorrow. but for some of the triple digits, we're not seeing as many, and then we're still keeping it mild for the peninsula and near the coast and into the day on wednesday. we're still seeing those numbers coming down a degree or two, even in the valley. so instead of upper 90s for morgan hill will be in the low 90s and we'll see a high of 90 in livermore. and then some low 80s for novato. and we're seeing the high pressure that's dominating the weather across the region, kind of drifting back and forth from east to west. and as it moves away from us, that means we get much more of a onshore wind flow, and that helps bring down those temperatures a bit. it looks like that gets stronger into next week. so take a look
6:20 am
at san jose. we're going to see highs in the upper 80s low 90s through saturday. and then sunday it starts to cool off. much more of a breezy wind and upper 70s for highs early next week. but we will have to try to make it through these hotter days for today, tomorrow and then looking a little bit better for thursday into friday. while san francisco is not seeing as much of a change, we may get more sunshine here tomorrow with highs reaching into the low 70s. and mike, you're saying even though it is tuesday, it's a fairly smooth commute. yeah, it's smooth for a tuesday. the volume is great. we're looking at the backup here. building at the richmond bridge, heading over towards san rafael, the cameras auto focusing, trying to adjust to all the new cars and new lights coming in. there we go, a clearer view. and that's what folks are seeing as they travel over in toward san rafael. see, there's a little slowing on our sensors there and a little slowing as you expect. right around golden gate fields out of richmond, over westbound highway 37, holding steady with the gradual build over towards some fog over here in the north bay. we talk about. that's that's not a surprise. highway

four shows slowing through concord and into bay point out of bay point. we're looking at the crash, though. that continues to cause some slowing westbound highway for your commute direction out of antioch, right around somersville. reports of a crash there no major injuries, but there may be one lane blocked, and i believe that's why there's all that slowing. this is typically a build time coming out of antioch. this portion of contra costa county typically sees that first commute pushing over toward walnut creek, which is not a problem. six eight is great all the way down in toward the area where it meets with 580, a smooth drive out of the altamont pass. there is a crash before you get over from tracee, so that is one concern for folks joining off of 205. the south bay. no real slowing for the north on 101 direction. we are looking at the smooth flow of traffic and the build not really evident from this shot, but we do see more traffic coming in, especially coming in out of morgan hill. back to you. thanks, mike. 620 right now tracking the arctic still ahead on today in the bay. the all new mission nasa is launching to follow our climate in crisis. we'll be back in a moment

6:32 am
he became vice president, it would leave an empty seat in arizona. and that might have been part of harris's calculation. josh shapiro on the right. he is for school choice very unpopular with teachers unions, but a skilled, skilled politician. and of course, he was in pennsylvania, still is, and would have picked up perhaps a few votes. there was concern that harris would lose rather, the far left. shapiro is unabashedly pro-israel. okay, here's a question you only ask once is it walls or waltz? it's hard to find video of him using his own name, but i will tell you, newscasters in minneapolis say walls, although we've heard other people say walls, so we'll know soon enough. harris and governor walz have a busy week in front of them, introducing themselves as the new team with visits to pennsylvania, then eau claire, wisconsin. wednesday, detroit, durham, north carolina,
6:33 am
both on thursday, las vegas and phoenix. after that, they were supposed to go to savannah, but they'll have to delay that because of the storm. and then the new york times says they will be out in california for a fundraiser on sunday. the two sides can now try to hammer out a vice presidential debate. walz and vance both see themselves as folksy midwesterners from small towns. both served in the military. walz served for quite some time in congress. vance, less than one term in the senate. we have yet to hear from donald trump's camp either on truth, social or officially, former president donald trump trying to make hay. yesterday with the stock market plunge, dow fell 1000 points, or about 2.5% monday. and he is continuing to talk about that. we have yet to see anything moore marcus about his reaction. but you know, that's coming soon. i was just going to say that scott. all right. thanks for that. six 3340 right now. and you know, many bay area teachers struggling to make it in the bay now school district

in looking to bridge the housing gap with new affordable units today in the bay's ginger conejero saab live for us outside of those units, this actually i think you're inside the unit today. all right. so talk to us about what's going on here. it looks nice. ginger it does. it's very nice. marcus i know we went from outside to inside this hour. you know this. the superintendent of the school district says is really the collaborative work of the school district, the city of daly city, as well as its voters. so they're giving us a little sneak peek of what it looks like inside one of the one bedroom units in this 56 unit affordable housing project for teachers and staff for the jefferson elementary school district. so let's take a little tour here. here's a kitchen. look how nice. i mean, we didn't get a chance to prepare any breakfast for you this morning because it has been a little bit busy, but this unit is under 600ft■!s. construction wrapped up this summer, so teachers full time and part time have been moving in in the past months. this was made possible through the sale of surplus
6:35 am
properties, specifically a school site that was sold over ten years ago as well as a bond measure that was passed by voters in daly city. now, as i mentioned, there are 56 students. i want to take you inside here. this is the hallway that leads into the one bedroom or the bedroom here in the unit. now, this is going for 60% of market value. so a one bedroom unit like this is going for about 1600 to $1700. that is very rare, as we know, here in the bay area, the two bedrooms are going for about 2100 to 2200, and there are six three bedroom units are going for about 2800. i want to give you a look here at something that's interesting that they pointed out to us. look at the closet space. this was just something that they wanted to make sure. they also included in this, because this is something that you rarely see in these apartment units, you know, affordable, affordable housing the superintendent recognizes is a powerful tool for recruitment and retainment of highly qualified staff. income is very,
6:36 am
challenging in this area. you know, you need a high income to live in this area. and so having this below market housing really helps our staff be able to stay in this area. and many of our staff actually have been commuting in for, you know, from petaluma and tracee and hercules. and they're able now to live in the community where they work, which is really exciting for them. well, currently, staff housing is 90% at capacity. eligible teachers and staff had to undergo an application process through the educational housing corporation, which is a separate entity, but it is overseen by the jefferson elementary school district. now there's a need income bracket that teachers and staff need to qualify for, and they can also live in these units for 5 to 7 years to give them some time to save and eventually purchase a home. now eligibility to live in staff housing lasts for as long
6:37 am
as someone is employed by the school district, and the official celebration for the conclusion of this project will take place later at 11. this morning, as this comes really just days after the state superintendent also made a big announcement that california will look into investing into affordable housing on school property. so this is something that's already ahead of the lesson plan for the day. marcus. yeah, i mean, that's really cool to see. not only the teachers. you know, it's hard to find housing here. but not only are they working in the community, but they are truly a part of the community working there, living there. it's i think it's going to be a good thing. all right. thanks, ginger. that's right. you can actually see the school just even better. all right. can walk to and then help with climate and crisis. they can walk to work if they don't have a lot of stuff to carry away. all right. thanks, ginger. well, there are some new developments this morning in elon musk tug of war with san francisco. it's looking like the days are

numbered for his mid-market x headquarters today in the bay's. kris sanchez joins us in our newsroom. this morning. and kris, from the sound of it all, the holdovers will not necessarily be moving from the bay area to texas right away, though. right. well, it sounds like this move could impact your commute because some employees who used to show up for work in san francisco will now head to work in san jose and palo alto and very soon, we're talking about the next few weeks. according to an internal email, the email, obtained by the new york times by x chief executive linda yaccarino wrote to employees, this is an important decision that impacts many of you, but it is the right one for our company in the long term. this appears to be musk making good on his threat to leave san francisco and california over political differences. the latest of which was a california policy banning school districts from notifying parents when they the children, change their gender identification. a musk bought twitter in 2022. we remember when that sign came
6:39 am
down and the x went up. the x is now down again. according to the chronicle. since taking over x, musk battle the city over that unsanctioned x sign. also over an effort to turn empty offices into bedrooms for traveling workers, and was also sued by the landlord for not paying rent. x's departure is the latest blow to san francisco, especially in the mid-market area, which, according to a real estate company cbre, has a 37% vacancy rate as of the last quarter. however, that is a number that appears to be stabilizing. laura so interesting to see. all right. thank you very much, kris. 638 on your tuesday morning and the sun is up. going to warm things up, in fact, as well, carrie's been watching the temperatures. it's already such a different picture compared to yesterday at this time. we were seeing a lot of clouds at this time yesterday and today. it is completely clear and we are going to have
6:40 am
slightly warmer temperatures there. but then check out san francisco, where it's still foggy. and that's a look at the golden gate bridge. the temperature there at 54 degrees. we will see a wide range in our microclimates anywhere from mid 60s and half moon bay to low 90s in the north bay to up to 101 degrees in fairfield. and we also will have upper 90s for the south county for this afternoon, while san jose will reach a high of 86 degrees. we'll see more of the same tomorrow, but the heat starts to ease up a little bit going toward the end of the week while still staying very comfortable in san francisco with low 70s. it will be in the low 80s in hayward and in concord, reaching 95 degrees tomorrow. and just a touch lower for thursday. so you can see that we are working our way towards some more comfortable temperatures, and we'll get a look at what's ahead coming up. mike, now you have some breaking news out of mountain view. yeah this for folks. listen up. if you use caltrain and this is not at one of the stations, it's actually between the mountain view and the sunnyvale station closer to the mountain view

station near the intersection of evelyn and moorpark, where it just came to us from caltrain that they've disrupted service right now because of the police activity in that area. so we're watching for more details. avoid that area, of course, on your cars as well. but 237 itself, that does seem to be operating just fine past that scene. meanwhile, we're looking at one on one coming up through the south bay. so there is a bill for the south bay there, as well as 87 mountain view not experiencing any big slowdowns until about another 45 minutes, but that could disrupt service again on those surface streets. and if you are taking caltrain, your service is currently disrupted through mountain view and sunnyvale. we're looking on the southbound side of the nimitz now. that's pretty standard for the east bay. there is a crash near the dublin interchange with no detail and no slowing. i'll track that, but the walnut creek interchange now showing a pretty good slowdown coming off of 680 and heading over in toward lafayette and in toward orinda. standard bill for the rest of your routes, including the richmond area where westbound 80 starts to build up, and, of course, the backup at the bay bridge toll plaza. back to you. thanks, mike. 641 scott mcgrew not only
