sigh of relief he was not chosen. let's talk about the campaign. what are the grounds there? >> reporter: well, you were just at the olympics, savannah. think about this as basically a 100 meter sprint. this is going to be a sprint to define governor walz. 70% of americans say they don't know who he is. you are already seeing the trump campaign trying to make the case. this is the most, in their words, radical ticket in u.s. history. they will attack his policies, everything, from the fact he enshrined abortion rights as well as the lgbt protections he passed in his state. so it is going to be the burden of the harris campaign to fire back. how is he going to do that? democrats say he's got to flood the air waves. he has to not just make shus of the democratic national convention coming up but engage in debates and interview and

the powerful storm leaving much of the southeast under water this morning, washing out roads in georgia and bringing down trees and power lines in south carolina. residents scrambling to prevent possible damage. some even clearing drains as the storm slams south carolina with heavy rains. >> without those, there is nothing stopping the water just coming up. >> reporter: but for many, it is already too late. with residents in south carolina worried this is only the beginning. even more rain is expected to fall in the coming days. >> the bedrooms are soaking wet. the bathrooms are soaking wet. >> reporter: across the region, an urgent warning to stay off the road. >> we have an suv that got swept off the golf course into the creek. >> reporter: in manatee county florida, good samaritans rescuing a woman trapped in her car. and a look at the widespread flooding in florida, hit by over

a foot of rain. some even turning to boats to navigate the roads, with neighborhoods completely submerged. already at least six people have been killed by this storm. while debby is over at the atlantic ocean, those waters are expected to restrengthen before it hits the coast again overnight. >> priscilla, thanks. all right. al is back at his post keeping an eye on debby. a slow-mover. >> that's right. 65 miles south, southeast of charleston. 45 miles an hour winds. it is moving east. you can almost walk as fast as debby, moving east at five miles an hour. right now we have flood warnings out. but flood watches for 15 million people all the way up to norfolk, virginia with this system. it will make land fall again tomorrow morning. then moves inland bringing heavy

rain anywhere from 5 to 7 inches of rain interior sections of the north carolinas and rockets up the coast. by saturday morning, it's up west of new york city into new york state. but it will bring a lot of heavy rain and a lot of flooding. we have a moderate risk to a high risk of flooding along the carolina coast. also along the northeast and mid atlantic state. upwards of 5 inches in new york city. tomorrow, again, river flooding and tornadoes possible. mid-atlantic right on up into the northeast. then we move into friday. look at this. a high risk of flooding into pennsylvania, upstate new york. so this is really going to be a big problem over the next 72 hours. guys? >> all right, al. thank you. let's shift gears to the olympics. craig, we miss you. has paris missed us?

726 right now. i'm laura garcia. here's a look at our top stories, including a subway accident that took the life of a young boy. i'm kris sanchez in san jose, where a boy on a scooter was hit and killed by a truck in the city's cambria neighborhood. his identity has not been revealed, but people have left flowers and candles near the intersection of camden and lee, where he died yesterday afternoon. san jose police say the driver is cooperating with the investigation. we know that the boy is the victim of the 20th deadly crash on san jose city streets. this year. i'm bob redell here in sunol, where students will be going back to school this morning at sunol glen for the first time after a contentious recall that ousted two board members who had banned the pride flag from flying here on campus. the school's principal and superintendent is, quote, very positive about the new school year. in spite of the hurt feelings among some parent. still, one mom tells us she has pulled her three kids this year because she felt the politics surrounding the recall was seeping into the classroom.

>> i think it will take a while for everything to sink in. this has been my dream ever since i was four or five years old ever since i started wrestling and i heard about the olympics. i don't know. the last 12 hours have been a blur. most of us have barely slept last night and here we are today. so it just feels like a dream. >> i want to talk about your performance yesterday. i don't know if it came out of nowhere because if you are at the olympics, clearly you know what you are doing. a lot of folks are talking about the guy from great britain. and then all of a sudden, toward the end, you come out of nowhere and you set an olympic record in the process. did you know going in that you were going to be wearing that gold medal? >> i mean, i set the goal for myself earlier in the year, but it is one of the things where i had to keep telling myself that i can do this. i would have been happy with a medal of any color. i knew if i put myself in the position, i was going to go for gold.

i think it surprised a lot of people, but i think a lot of people, american track fans, weren't too surprised to see americans on the podium. >> well, your father's reaction was my favorite. this was the first time in 112 years team usa has had two guys on top of the podium for the 1,500. how do you feel in this moment about that, about making history? >> yeah. it feels amazing. it feels like a storied moment just because i think coming into the olympics, i had a lot of wins on my own. but to have another teammate with me makes that whole experience just so much more fun. >> annette, you are the first american woman to ever medal in your event. first of all, i'm sure you knew that going in. does that add to the pressure that you already feel? >> i don't think there was much pressure in the sense of just being able to do what i have always known that i can do. but to actually get the medal and like be -- hold that honor of being the first woman to medal in women's hammer in the olympics, it's pretty great. >> you get your bronze medal

alive i was probably two years old, and i remember my sister and i hiding in our bedroom. and i peeked out right as my dad threw a tv at my mom. she left him shortly after that, and she's such a pillar of strength that i always questioned like how was she in this abusive relationship. so writing her story, for me, was a way to explore that. >> the process helping her and her mom find peace. >> i think she never really thought that she had made the right decision. she was unsure. but until she read the book, she was like, i didn't know if the choice i made was the best one for you and your sister. and so just knowing that it helped her realize that she couldn't have made a better choice for us was, you know, so meaningful. >> what did your mom think of the movie? >> i got to see it the first time with my mom sitting right next to me, and she cried the entire time.

and then seeing her when it was over giving everyone a hug that worked on the film. >> hoover says blake was the perfect choice to portray her mother's strength on screen. >> when did you findut blake lively was on board? >> they told me she might sign on when they were in early talks with her. she's one of my favorite actresses, so i'm kind of a realist, pessimist. so i didn't allow myself to get excited until she showed up onset. >> what was it like to go from this idea in your head to your heart and then now seeing blake lively onset bringing this to life. >> it is very surreal. i remember getting to see these things that i wrote on paper come to life around you. it is just astonishing, honestly. >> at one point we were in the theater and we popped up on the screen. what was that like. >> worst day of my life. no, i am not kidding. like i was literally on camera

for like a few seconds, right? it took 10 to 14 hours to film the party scene that day. i had no idea what it took to act, just a whole new level of respect for everyone in this industry. >> how do i find you? >> oh. >> i want to find you. >> i opened my flower shop. >> what do you hope audiences feel when they leave the theater? >> i want them to feel helpful. whether it is for someone they know who is on the same journey or whether that's just how they feel themselves. i want them to leave this theater feeling hopeful. >> wow. >> so we'll mention it again. under ten. let's go! chug it. good morning. it is 8:56 a.m. marcus washington. well, today is the first day of school for students at sunol glen. that's the east bay school that recently endured a bitter recall battle. this is leading to the ousting of two of the district's three board members. now, this all centered around the controversy that started when the board banned the flag being flown over at the school's campus. one parent does tell us that the issue led to her pulling her children from the school and enrollment is down this year by almost 10%. now, the superintendent points out that enrollment is down in many of the schools throughout alameda county, and losing even just a few students would translate into a high percentage translate into a high percentage happening now. our bob redell introducing togo's new barbece beef sandwich.
