call it pandemonium. two giant pandas set to make their public debut here in california. what about the san francisco zoo? we're live this morning with an update on plans to bring a pair of the bears to the bay area closing out paris with one of the best, the bay area olympian, who just scored a major role in the closing ceremony this weekend. plus you're always in pain. you know, you're always, you know, physically, you're pushing your limits. no pain, no gold. and in this case, she's bringing home two medals. we go one on one with the bay area olympian who says it's a childhood dream come true. this is today in the bay. good thursday morning. thanks so much for starting your day with us. i'm laura garcia, and i'm marcus washington. we'll get a look at that forecast for us coming up in just a bit with kari. but first we want to talk to mike about what's going on on those roads issue down in the south
6:02 am
bay. yeah. good news. no major injuries, but i want to show you this video. the reason why camden avenue is still closed and we're told maybe 3 or 4 more hours after this crash happened overnight. the deal is this vehicle that you see here hit the power pole. there's the power pole that's down. so now we had live wires at the scene at the time. but pg&e says it will take a few more hours till they can restring that line. and they don't want to reopen camden until that work is done. let's show you on the map where they're talking about this part of san jose. it's south of highway 85 at the top of your screen here, this is camden avenue at crouser to a major roadways just south of the freeway. here's blossom hill road, and some folks may head toward highway 85 as you're heading toward the freeway. perhaps accessing there. you can use harwood to get up into the same area if it's surface streets you're looking at. but for the time being and perhaps much of the morning, you're going to need to use perhaps lea or meridian, which you probably use to access highway 85 anyway. but just those notes for anywhere heading north from that portion of san jose, the rest of the south bay is moving smoothly. but carey we have
6:03 am
commutes changing because san jose unified as well as other school districts are starting. of course, over the next few weeks, including san jose and a lot of other school districts and we are starting out with a mostly clear sky as the sun is peeking through the windows and the blinds and waking you up for the day, we're going to start out with some cool temperatures, but still looking a little hazy out there as the smoke from nearby wildfires continues to drift in. it will be in the 80s and low 90s today, so still pretty warm in the valleys with the elevated fire danger continuing. but for that first day of school for the kids in san jose, we start out nice and cool with some low 60s, but warming up into the upper 80s for this afternoon. we'll take a look at more of our microclimate forecast coming up in a few minutes. thanks kari. well, new overnight, a 7.1 magnitude earthquake rocking japan. this happened just before 1:00 this morning. our time. a tsunami advisory was issued shortly after. we do have some new video from a local radio station showing the moment of the earthquake. you see right there now, japanese leaders have been
6:04 am
warning people in that immediate area to leave the coastal areas of kochi and miyazaki. perfections. this is until it had been lifted. so far, there are no reports of any structural damage to any of those buildings. 603 and happening today for the first time in five years, giant pandas will go on display at a california zoo. the buzz in san diego is growing so big, governor newsom even declaring today california panda day today in the bay ginger conejero saab is live in san francisco. i guess we should be wearing black and white, but ginger, this certainly has a lot of folks right here in the bay area believing by this time maybe, maybe by next year we'll have some our pandas of our own right here in the bay area that's right. laura and i was thinking, is there a way that i could tie this in to pablo sandoval leaving and us losing a panda in that way? but anyways, there you go. well, the good news is that people who are looking for that are hopeful because san francisco mayor
6:05 am
london breed and officials in china signed a memorandum of understanding a couple months ago to make san francisco part of china's panda diplomacy program. the board of supervisors have also signed off on fundraising rules for the mayor. back in june. but when exactly the pandas are set to arrive or will arrive in san francisco, that part is still up in the air. the timeline for that will be set by the completion of a panda enclosure at the san francisco zoo. now, mayor breed says that san francisco zoo has been consulting with the san diego zoo about the panda project. she's hoping to celebrate a panda debut, much like they are having today. visitors there in san diego are thrilled to have sing bao and chung shan as additions to the zoo they are attracting visitors in san diego has even put out traffic alerts for the area. locals are expecting slowdowns on the roads until the end of august. it's a draw that mayor breed hopes the pandas will also bring to san francisco. in a recent sit down,
6:06 am
marcus had with mayor breed, she shared her optimism for the potential that panda tourism can bring. pandas are about joy, but they're about our economic recovery and what what we're and bringing it back to downtown. we've seen a 92% increase in activation of nightlife in downtown because of our block parties. first thursday bangles and beads, making it an entertainment zone and hopefully the zoo and downtown recovery. that's all part of mayor breed's plan there, but not everyone is on board. critics say the facilities at the zoo are simply inadequate to host these animals. we'll see how this all continues to play out, but for now, hapa, happy panda day to you, laura. yeah, exactly. cheers. i don't know what we do for that, but. cheers. do you want some bamboo? thanks. ginger. eat some bamboo. yeah well, we are closing in on the home stretch of the 2024 paris olympics. and a live look this
6:07 am
morning at the area of the olympic games. paris? yes, you can see right here. look, people have been showing up and showing out there since the game started. and, you know, we've been talking about stanford so much, so many alums who've been participating. well, one of the most recently decorated u.s. female olympians of all time can add one more title to her very long resume. i counted on you for these past 12 years, and i really can't think of anyone better to lead us out of the olympic games. so you're going to need a new jacket. oh, okay. okay. so did you make that out pretty thrilling here. 14 time olympic medalist katie ledecky learning that she'll be a flagbearer in sunday's closing ceremony. the swimmer finding out about the honor through a phone call with a teammate about the honor, robert fink ledecky. as you can see, understandably, she's overcome with emotion. she gets the jacket to hold the
6:08 am
flag, representing for the men will be rower and team usa gold medalist. nick mead. very, very exciting for her because she couldn't participate in the opening ceremonies because she has the swimming, the next day. the next day. okay, so there's another very talented woman making headlines in paris. yeah, she's back to san francisco with not one, but two gold medals today in the bay's jessica aguirre. speaking with her one on one about those victories and a childhood dream which inspired it all. okay, guys, i've snagged myself two gold medals. look at this. kristen faulkner joining me now. she lives in san francisco. now okay, this is a crazy story about wishing for something when you were a kid and then just it happening. two gold medals, one doing it on your own on sunday when you won the 98 mile pursuit, which hasn't been done in 40 years. how did that feel getting the first one? i had great legs that day and i knew that it was unlikely, but as soon as i started the race i thought, wow, i feel really strong today. if i
6:09 am
play this smart, i can make it happen, but you know, it was my first race of that caliber. having won. and so i was still in shock when i crossed the finish line. i, i kept riding and i was like, i won, but did i really win? and, you know, it took a few hours to really sink in, but definitely overwhelming and exciting and the culmination of the hard work that went into it. and during that whole, you know, 98 miles, you were thinking, this feels good to me, i feel okay. i felt confident and composed and i think, you know, in races you're always in pain. you know, you're always, you know, physically, you're pushing your limits, but i felt very confident and composed, and i thought, you know, if i play this smart, this is a race i could win. okay? and if that wasn't enough, then she goes and she wins a second gold medal in the team pursuit. tell me a little bit about that. i knew we had a really strong team for team pursuit the last year we have we have really strong teammates and so we knew something was special could happen, but we haven't trained as much together as we would like. and so we kind of came
6:10 am
into the race with a lot of unknowns. it was like we have a lot of potential, but will we be able to reach that potential on race day? and we went out and we had a very good first race and we said, wow, okay. we raced well, we had a good time, but it was pretty messy. and the crazy part about this is you actually didn't get added to, you know, these olympics till july. i mean, how do you prepare for something like that or is it that it was so close you couldn't even think about it, so you couldn't get scared, well, i was selected for team pursuit, actually, back in june, so earlier in the summer and i'd been training with the team pursuit squad for eight months now, so i knew earlier about the team pursuit. the road race was a bit more challenging. i did find out last minute, and but road is my primary career. i raced for professionally for a road team, and so i didn't have to train that different to prepare for the road race. okay, that's super exciting. i know that you said when you were a little girl, you wanted to you had a dream of coming to the olympics. was it for cycling or just what sport were you thinking of back then? at the
6:11 am
time i was a swimmer. i was a young child and doing some swimming events in my local pool, and i think i saw michael phelps on tv and i said, oh, wow, you know, that's incredible. and i also saw a lot of female athletes on tv, which we don't usually get for the rest of the year. you know, there's football and baseball. and so to see the female athletes on tv, i was like, wow, i could do that too one day. and that just set into motion this dream to race at the olympics. are you headed back to the bay area, well, this winter probably all right. thank you so much for speaking to us. and two gold medals, folks, back to you. thanks, jess. hey, and don't forget prime time is the place to be tonight. right here on nbc bay area china's going to try to keep hold of its gold medal diving streak. this is in the three meter springboard final on the track. it's the women's long jump and 100 meter gold medalist. noah lyles goes for that rare double in the 200 meter finals. you can catch all of that beginning at 8:00 right here on nbc. bay area okay, so that's what's going on in paris. let's check out the weather conditions are shaping up right
6:12 am
here at home. yeah, it's going to be still very warm in the valleys, but cool along the coastline. and we're looking at pleasanton because we have a lot more people getting up and heading out for this first day of school. and we're starting out with some upper 50s. it's nice and clear. we do have a really nice morning ahead. and also going into the afternoon where temperatures won't be as hot but still pretty warm with our highs reaching into the mid to upper 80s for today and a lot of sunshine, temperatures start to drop around 6:00. the wind picks up and it's going to be a very comfortable evening right around sunset. we're in the upper 70s, but looking at temperatures still a little bit above normal, we'll take a look ahead to cooler air coming up in a few minutes. so cooler. i like the sound of that. thanks gary. you probably won't like this. there's a crackdown going on at costco ahead on today in the bay. the new tactic the store is now putting in place to stop shoppers who don't have a membership. we just got some welcome good news about the economy. we needed that. let's go out to the future and see how that is reacting. yeah, we're
6:13 am
going to get some positive arrows coming up and don't forget that excitement growing over at outside lands. this weekend. while the focus will be on the music, the food might just steal the spotlight. we're going to hear from a woman, that local chef that may have to impress all those folks out there in order to get in. and as we head to break, here's a quick look at the olympics medal count. stay with us for more coverage from paris. you're watching today in the bay

had hoped on wednesday, but we did just get some good news. the number of americans asking for unemployment benefits fell for the first time last week. more than expected. other news, nasa says those two astronauts that were supposed to spend eight days in space may not come back to earth until next year. nasa and boeing have insisted they're not stuck in space. they can come back anytime they want that the problems are not with the return craft. that claim is getting more and more difficult to believe, nasa indicates. instead of using the boeing starliner to return a spacecraft dubbed the calamity capsule, astronaut suni williams and butch wilmore will stay and work as part of the space station's regular crew until the arrival of the spacex dragon capsule in
6:17 am
early 2025. this is a campaign about where we're going, and that's a future where everyone matters and everyone's included. vice presidential candidate tim walz in wisconsin yesterday, the wall street journal has analyzed walz financial filings, determined he's one of the least wealthy people to ever run for vice president. the walls sold their home in mankato, minnesota, when he became governor. they're living in a rental while the governor's mansion is being renovated. and they report the family has between 1000 and $15,000 savings for their children's college education. now, walz makes $127,000 a year as minnesota governor. the minnesota legislature tried to give him a raise. and i think you can probably guess what he did. he turned it down like our governor did right now, to exactly, exactly. right now, he and his wife, gwen, met as teachers, so probably neither one was expected. my parents met as teachers. probably never expected the other person to be
6:18 am
making a ton of money. yeah, yeah. we'll know more about his finances as he fills out the vice presidential, you know, candidate, etc. okay, well, the book is coming to. i'm sure there is. it's always a book. all right. thanks, scott. you may need to stock up because the days of using someone else's costco card. not that you do that right. no well, they appear to be numbered. you don't really look like me, marcus. not in the morning. sometimes i don't know. you see how i walk in here? hey. the company. let's get back to costco, though, okay? the company is now cracking down on nonmembers. a new posting on its website indicates costco is ready to install digital card scanners at all their store entrances. right now, you just kind of hold it up and walk in. most membership cards also have photo ids, but those who do not, they're going to have to show one. the company says more members are raising questions about nonmembers taking advantage of the discounts. and of course, those free samples. it's all about the samples. yeah
6:19 am
otherwise known as lunch. if you make the rounds, as many times. okay, can you taste this outside land starts a little more than 24 hours from now in golden gate park. yeah, and what laura is really trying to say is more than just music will be filling the air. you actually can also expect the scent of all of the sorts of delicious food out there from dozens of vendors and we went one on one with tanya kohler. she's a food curator for this year's event. now, here's how she's chosen what's on that menu? we receive about 200 applications every year from all from local bay area restaurants. and i'm primarily looking for, you know, to fill holes in our culinary lineup, like in terms of what types of cuisine we have. right. if i see that we don't have enough korean food, i might look for more korean restaurants to add to the lineup, and, you know, also, you know, dining out in the bay area, if i dine out, dine out at a restaurant that i love, you might see them at outside lands the next year. so she is the woman to know. great job. i know, she says. besides putting
6:20 am
together that menu, she also helps bay area restaurants adapt their operations to golden gate park's festival atmosphere. so bon appetit to all of those who are heading out to the festival. right. and you see a lot of, you know, diverse dishes. yeah, i like that. she looks for diversity. yeah, that is a good thing about i've been out there before and it's so much it's kind of overload. if you like food, you're like, i don't know which one i want to go to first. oh, what a big problem. soboroff i was just bringing perspective. look, i like it, i like it okay, so while we're deciding where we're going to lunch today, maybe we know if we eat indoors or out, it's definitely going to be dependent on the location. so if we go to san francisco, it's outdoors. but if we're in livermore, then we might want to find some air conditioning. we've had such hot weather and take a live look outside in dublin this morning. beautiful clear view. you can kind of see the hazy sky there, and we've had some warm temperatures across the bay area. but let's talk about the cool down that will eventually make its way into the bay area. so this shows the cooler air locked up north.
6:21 am
it's by the jet stream. the flow of those upper level winds, and the high and low pressure kind of drives it either north or south. so we're going to see the development of some low pressure, which is the air rising. and it has a counterclockwise wind flow. so it's going to cause the jet stream to dig a little bit deeper into the bay area and closer to us by early next week, and cause for a drop in our temperatures and also pushing away that high pressure that's kept it so hot over the past couple of weeks. and making it move farther off towards the east. so eventually we're going to start to get some relief here as we go into the weekend, as well as early next week as that jet stream begins to dive into the bay area. so let's take a look at our forecast for today. for this first day of school in antioch, we've been seeing triple digit temperatures upper 90s. but today it will be in the low 90s for the first day of school. so you want to make sure the kids are dressed with maybe a jacket for the morning, but then shorts for the afternoon and for recess. we're going to
6:22 am
see a big range in temperatures from drop off. time to pick up time. as we go into this day. now, hopefully it's a great start to the school year for those kids. all right, so let's take a look at our temperatures across the south bay. cupertino will reach a high of 86 today, but then a high of 92 in morgan hill. much of the east bay seeing some lower numbers, but still pretty warm. we're up to 94 in antioch today. pleasanton 90 degrees and some upper 70s for hayward. and then along the coast, it's still foggy and cool in the low 60s, while in palo alto will hit a high of 83 today and upper 60s in san francisco with a lot of clouds and fog and a breezy wind. but temperatures range in the north bay from 64. in bodega bay to 100 and clear lake in ukiah and in sonoma today, 86 degrees, so you can still see the warmer temperatures. and we'll continue to have those warmer spots in the inland areas at least through the weekend. but next week, some of our warmer valleys will only reach into the mid
6:23 am
80s. well, in san francisco we're seeing a lot of 60s here through the middle of next week. mike, you're hearing about a crash in dublin. yeah, i don't see any appreciable slowing on our camera right here. it's just past our camera approaching the dublin interchange. but i wanted to show you the volume of traffic. now we're looking over here toward west 580. no real slowing for the sensors other than your normal slowing, but we'll track that. the note here. pleasanton, we have, san lorenz. we have also pleasanton, mount diablo and antioch. they all have schools coming online. and that portion of contra costa county may see a different traffic flow adjusting over the next week. we do have a crash here at hesperian, but it's off the freeway where there's normal slowing for the nimitz. back to you. thanks so much, mike. 622 for you this morning. so next here on today in the bay nbc bay area responds. we've got medals of our own to hand out to consumers who were fighting for about $250,000 collectively. i'm consumer investigator chris chmura. we'll show you who's on ourodium next p team,

6:33 am
in san francisco san jose. yeah. we are going to have a nice start. it's sunny, it's cool. and it's the first day of school. we're going to get those kids up and out the door as we are starting out with some mild weather at drop off time, it's going to be in the low 60s, mostly sunny, but at pick up time we're warming up to the upper 80s, so maybe a jacket and shorts were today. there will be a big range in temperatures from the start of the day into the afternoon, but i hope it's an amazing start for the staff and kids all around the bay area getting getting their start for today. we're headed for the upper 80s here and it's not as hot. our normal high temperatures are running in the mid to upper 80s for the inland valleys, and we're still going to see some above normal temperatures with concord headed for 91 degrees. for this afternoon. so we'll talk about lower temperatures in our microclimate forecast coming up laura marcus, thank you. kari. well, summer break is officially over. the words no kid wants to hear, but we're specifically
6:34 am
talking about 25,000 students over in san jose unified schools. now, this morning, they returned for a new school year. but, you know, some of those parents probably wondering how things are different after the scathing civil grand jury report today in the bay's kris sanchez joins us live in san jose this morning, chris, has the district made a response? you know, so the district is going to be doing a few things differently. one thing that they did for the first time this year was host a webinar for parents to attend, and thousands of parents showed up to hear about topics from academic programs to resources, one of which addresses student mental health. and we are contracting with a few additional local agencies to provide mental health support resources for families. so that is one new offering that we have that's expanded beyond what we were offering last year. our families also got to ask questions. they asked about transportation, free and reduced lunch applications, and how to get involved. but one thing that
6:35 am
did not come up in that webinar, the civil grand jury report issued in june, titled district adrift, but the district trustees did hold a special meeting and rejected most of those findings. the civil grand jury found that san jose unified has too much leadership turnover. is lacking in an overall plan for school safety, leaving much of the planning to individual campuses and the civil grand jury also dinged the district on how it handles employee investigations and on a lack of transparency. now, the san jose unified board rejected the grand jury recommendations on several topics addressing turnover, hiring and employee investigations. but the trustees said, and the district said that it would explore whether a more coordinated safety and emergency approach would be more effective and they're also going to consider providing more transparency in a district that does not stream its meetings, does not allow people to attend remotely. the district's first board meeting, by the way, is
6:36 am
august 22nd. we will remind you that there are 25,000 students in san jose unified. they are all streaming out to 41 campuses around san jose. so do please be careful out there because i like to say there's nothing more dangerous than an erratic kid where like, they're trying to figure out where they're going. so definitely pay attention and watch for that glare on your windshield. back to you. and who are we kidding? some of the parents are a little erratic to take a picture. they take the pictures. well, you have to remember which campus. oh, is it middle school? no you're in high school now. oh, gosh. sad to say, summer is over for a lot of these kids. but good luck the school year. thanks, chris. well, 635 for you this morning. new details on a tragic accident in the south bay. this is the death of an 11 year old boy struck while riding his scooter in south san jose on tuesday. now there is a growing memorial there at that site where it all happened. this is at lee and camden avenue. friends and family remembering all of this, remembering him. they are now
6:37 am
opening up about their loss. some are sharing photos of the boy identified as as he was amaru ramos burney. now he was just a few days away from entering middle school after attending a bagby elementary. friends say that he was on his way home from basketball practice. his father telling us that his brother was there when that all happened. he is now sharing the message to all parents. abre los queridos. hug your loved ones. you never know when they won't be here. hug them. kiss them and spend time together. no charges are expected to be filed. police are already saying that the car had the right of way. that driver is cooperating with the investigation. well, happening today, the spirit of aloha expected to be on full display in maui as people pause to mark one year since the fire storm, which wiped out the historic town of lahaina. this is a community that's only just now
6:38 am
beginning that very long healing process. that fire killed 102 people. mourners today will read aloud the names of the lives lost. a private nighttime memorial will be held at the gym in lahaina, one of the few structures left standing after the fire. well, new at six. one of the outside lands. top deejays pulling out of the festival. actor and dj idris elba announcing on his instagram story that this week he would not be performing there at the festival. he was scheduled to dj at the soma stage on sunday night. elba said that detroit dj and producer marc kinchen, also known as mk, would replace him in that lineup. well, thousands are expected to flock to golden gate park, but one act is expected to see massive crowds. despite not being a headliner. we're talking about up and coming singer chapel roan, who
6:39 am
just broke a major record at lollapalooza this weekend. right. look at that crowd. those are people that's officials in chicago now say she broke the record for the largest crowd in lollapalooza history. the midwest perris princess, as she's originally known. she was actually set to play a smaller stage, but officials moved her to the main stage after her recent surge in popularity. this sunday, she's set to play at the lands end main stage at 4 p.m, so get there early to get a shot to see her. you know, i'm so glad that today in the bay keeps me up to date on some of these artists, because not until last week i even heard her name for the first time. maybe i've heard her music, but you know what? congratulations to her. that's a big thing to feel that many people and have that many people singing your song. can you imagine that? wow, i can't
6:40 am
imagine it. and nice weekend. nice weekend ahead for a lot. i was not lollapalooza. that already happened for outside lands. yeah, i think she may need a little bit more than the little outfit that she had. that's the mom in you. and i get it. it's going to be chilly. so we're going to see people coming in from other parts of the country and not prepared for the cool, windy and foggy weather we'll see at golden gate park. we're only reaching into the low 60s for highs, and in the evenings it drops down into the mid 50s. it is going to be a cool weekend out there at outside lands, but i know they're going to have so much fun. all right, so this weekend we also have the aloha festival at the san mateo event center. it's going to be in the upper 60s at 11:00. and only reaching into the low 70s for the afternoon, but really nice and sunny weather there as well. in gilroy, much hotter temperatures. it's going to be in the upper seconds for friday and saturday. a lot of sunshine overnight, lows in the mid 50s and then on sunday it is slightly cooler for the rodeo. it's going to be up to about 84

degrees. and if your weekend plans take you to the beach and you want to check out santa cruz, it will be really nice there with highs in the low 70s for friday and saturday and a mix of sun and clouds for sunday with highs in the upper 60s. mike what's the update on that tri tri valley crash? we have that crash here approaching the dublin interchange. you see things really jamming up. i know there's a lot of trees and other structures, but that's the jam. the crash reported in the middle lane. still, as you're approaching the dublin interchange. and that's what has things starting to back up on the approach. nothing major as far as the backup, but it may cause a shift on the city streets, a number of crashes for 580 and interstate 880. but they're both clearing as you're heading up in toward oakland. scott. but we're seeing the build through that area of course. back to you. all right. mike. well, in politics, three of the four people running for either vice president or president are all ending up in the same place. coincidence? oh, i think not, bob. yeah. good morning, jim scott. plus it's not paris. it's not the olympics. but sure. is it close?

deployed several times over the course of his military time, but not in iraq and afghanistan. walz retired after 24 years in the service, but shortly before his unit was deployed to iraq to run for congress. here's vance, he said. we shouldn't allow weapons that i used in war to be on america's streets. well, i wonder, tim walz, when were you ever in war? when was this? what was this weapon that you carried into war, given that you abandoned your unit right before they went to iraq, and he has not spent a day in a combat zone? what bothers me about tim walz is the stolen valor garbage. here's a young walz on the left, a young vance on the right. the argument over whether one person's military service is better or more honorable than another makes some veterans uncomfortable, deployed or not, combat or not. again, neither saw combat. a spokesperson for the harris-walz ticket said, quote, governor walz thanks senator vance for putting his

afternoon at the time you picked them up. the ac will be blastin, temperatures will be in the low 90s, and even though 91 is still pretty hot, it's not as hot as it has been. so we are going to have some slightly lower temperatures for some of our inland valleys. instead of upper 90s in morgan hill, we'll see a high of 92 today, and upper 80s for east san jose. so we're still above normal, but not setting any records here. and we're in the upper 80s for a high today in walnut creek in hayward, 77 degrees. but then the coast still cool with some 60s. redwood city will reach a high of 80 today. upper 60s in san francisco and north bay temperatures reaching up to 86 degrees in santa rosa as well as novato. in our 7-day forecast, we're still going to see the hot temperatures holding for a few more days. but then look at next week. it looks like we'll have a significant cool down with highs in the mid 80s in the inland east bay and along the coast.
