two-hour-l two-hour-long conversation with elon musk. many users had trouble accessing it. musk claimed there was a cyber attack, but nbc news could not verify that. let's get to brie jackson. once the call got started, what did they have to say? >> reporter: good morning, frances, like you said, the conversation lasted for about two hours, former president donald trump spent a lot of it hitting many of his campaign lines. he told elon musk that if he's reelected, the u.s. would have the largest deportation in history. mr. trump also said he wants to build an iron dome defense system to protect against foreign threats and that he would like to close the department of education and move that responsibility to the states. during this talk, both men attacked kamala harris as being too far left. >> they're rewriting history, and making kamala sound like a

you. now to a roadblock for the independent presidential candidate in this race. a judge has ruled against robert f. kennedy's effort to appear on a new york ballot this fall. the democratic-aligned group sued kennedy who lives in california over the new york address he used on his ballot access petition forms. he said democrats are showing contempt for democracy and says he will appeal and win. the fbi confirms it is investigating an alleged hacking of the trump campaign. over the weekend, several news outlets reported that they'd been sent seemingly authentic files stolen from the campaign. authorities are also investigating an attempted hack of three biden campaign staffers. it's not clear if it was successful. the trump campaign says they were hacked by iranian groups, something iran denies. the middle i.c.e. is a powder keck this morning as a bloody war in gaza rages on. israel is also preparing for attacks by both iran and hezbollah. both have promised retaliation

after two high-profile assassinations blamed on israel. the u.s. has promised to back israel in the event of any escalation and is rushing naval reenforcements to the region. for the latest, let's go to claudio lavanga. what's the latest? >> reporter: morning, frances. in response to the threat of an imminent attack by hezbollah and iran against israel, the u.s. is taking a very unusual and rare step of publicly announcing the deployment of uss georgia, a guided missile submarine as well as ordering uss abraham lincoln, a carrier strike group, which is also equipped with fighter jets, to accelerate its ongoing transit to the middle east through the region. this follow as telephone call by the u.s. secretary of defense, lloyd austin, and his counterpart in israel, gallant, in which austin told gallant that the united states will take every step to defend israel,

which, according to gallant is facing threats from hezbollah and iran like never before. and, as a consequence, he warned them not to start a war, because the response would be like never before. now on the diplomatic front, the united states, france, germany, the uk and italy have issued a joint statement yet today in which they called for a deescalation in the region as well as welcoming once again their support to the efforts to find a cease-fir a cease-firest deal. this latest escalation was prompted by the killing of a senior member of hamas and hezbollah, one in beirut and the other one in tehran, they were killed within hours of each other, which, of course, has turned the middle east into, as you said, a powder keg, frances.

>> claudio lavanga, thank you. now to a disturbing crime caught on camera in new york. the stabbing attack of a jewish man in brooklyn. here's erin mclaughlin. >> reporter: in new york city, an alleged anti-semitic hate crime caught on camera. you see a group of men wearing traditional jewish clothing walking down a brooklyn street when they're approached by a man in purple who lunges at them and stabs one of them in the abdomen while shouting "free palestine", and "do you want to die", the suspect was later charged with attempted murder and hate crime. the victim is in the hospital in stable condition. the latest in a wave of anti-semitic attacks to strike new york city. in june, this was the scene on a new york subway. a man openly leading an anti-semitic chant, caught on camera by a fellow passenger. >> this is your chance to get out! >> reporter: weeks after another man veered his car into a group of students outside of a brooklyn yeshiva, while shouting

an anti-semitic slur, according to police. >> the jewish community is under assault. >> reporter: the number of incidents has skyrocketed nationwide since october 7 cair reporting a number of incidents as well. >> our thanks to erin mclaughlin for that report. abortion rights will be on the ballot in airizona in november. the secretary of state signed and certified an abortion access initiative last night. voters will now get to decide whether to add the right to abortion to the state's constitution. right now, arizona has a ban on abortion after 15 weeks. the secretary of state says over half a million signatures were turned in to add this initiative to the ballot, which broke a record. southern california was rattled monday after an earthquake shook the region.

essentially no impact. psychologically, we have millions of people who felt it. >> reporter: for many of them, it's the second quake felt in the region in the past week. the is there a chance this is the sign of a bigger quake to come? >> there's always a chance. we have about a 5% chance that within the next three days we will see something larger from the same location. >> reporter: the latest quake to rock california, coming just as the world's focus returns to the city as the next home of the summer olympics. tropical storm ernesto is moving across the caribbean this morning. let's turn to nbc meteorologist ryan ryan hanrahan. >> we've got ernesto going to come very close to puerto rico later on today. here's the current location. it's moving across the leeward islands right now. winds of 40 miles per hour. the storm is strengthening. it looks better this morning on a satellite loop than it has looked over the last 24 hours. that strengthening trend continues through the day.

tropical storm warning for the virgin islands and puerto rico. we get the storm very close to puerto rico later on today and tonight. then the storm lifts to the north and begins to strengthen. and it looks like when it passes very close to bermuda by their weekend, it's going to be a formidable hurricane. we're not expecting any direct threat to the lower 48, but there is the potential for big swells, waves and rip currents, all the way down to florida over the coming days. we have a lot of heat across the south once again. heat advisories and heat warnings in effect. 38 million people impacted by that. it's going to be a scorcher. 97 in new orleans but feels like 112. augusta, georgia jacksonville, a
