thursday, and then cooling by the weekend. so we do have a few changes here and there that will mainly be felt away from the bay and the coast. we're looking at a high of 90 today in concord, 85 in napa, and we'll see some upper 80s and low 90s for much of the north bay. well, san francisco will be staying in the 60s, taking it into the day tomorrow. once again, those temperatures warming up a degree or two with upper 80s low 90s for the east bay into the south county. and then on thursday we're going to see a few more of those low 90s in the inland valley. so we'll talk more about that coming up in a few minutes. mike, you have a look at the richmond-san rafael bridge. yeah, we're looking at traffic across the westbound commute direction. toll plaza saw a good amount of traffic for the last few minutes. kind of clearing, but i was watching this traffic over here. we had three tow trucks. two of them just left. there are a couple of hazards reported in the area westbound where we see no cars coming toward us right now. reports of a disabled tractor trailer or a trailer, not a tractor trailer, a trailer that is in the middle

of the roadway. they may have done a quick traffic break heading over off of richmond parkway, so we'll watch for that. i'll give you an update if there's anything that lasts over there, but also eastbound coming away from san rafael. heard about another disabled vehicle that may have just cleared from the roadway there. so anyways, the speed sensors look fine across 580 the richmond san rafael bridge. but watching two incidents, one in each direction, these arrows show you where things will traditionally get built in for the morning commute. but right now, all green. we have a couple of other crashes off of highway four. i'll check on both of them. looks like one might be clearing from 242. back to you. thanks, mike. well, as you and the kids head back to school shopping for notebooks and new shoes, don't forget to add vaccinations to your to do list today in the bay's kris sanchez joining us now. and kris covid top of the mind for a lot of people. but that's not the only vaccine we're talking about here. no. so more than a year post pandemic health data shows that some children are still behind in their regular childhood vaccinations. so we'll start with covid. it continues to surge because of new variants, but we do expect an updated

booster by the end of august or early september. so check with your doctor's office about the best time to get that. as for the other vaccines, double check that the kiddos are up to date as well. your child's school isn't required to check every single year. according to data from the centers for disease control and prevention, the vaccination rate for kindergartners is at 93%, which sounds good, but it's actually a 2% drop. and that includes in areas of san francisco, oakland, burlingame and santa clara county. that 2% may not seem like a lot, but it's three quarters of a million children who are at increased risk of getting things like measles. now measles, we thought we had eradicated 24 years ago. but now in the last couple of years, we've seen pockets spring up largely in areas where there are, you know, more than a handful of unvaccinated people. now, a reminder that public school children are required to have vaccines for polio, hepatitis b, measles, mumps,

rubella, chickenpox and that dtap vaccine before entering kindergarten. they have to have the tdap and chickenpox booster to head into seventh grade. and they do check. oh yeah, i made the mistake of not submitting the paperwork and we couldn't even pick up a schedule in seventh grade. right. exactly. so the schools really, you know, they tell you this is what you got to do, turn in. all right. get the appointments. that's the hard thing, too. but do you tell the kids or not? tell the kids i do. i used to surprise mine because, you know, you got to know your own kid, right? like. yeah, i don't want to deal with that until we get there. yeah, i hear you, too. it's a struggle. that's a whole other segment. yeah but now we're going to turn to decision 2024 with a live look in los angeles, where tim walz makes a solo stop today, visiting for the first time since kamala harris selected him as her running mate. he is expected to attend a convention and later a fundraiser in newport beach. now this all comes after a busy night for their opponent, donald trump. now former president, spent two hours on social media platform x

today in the mid to upper seconds, we'll be tracking a slight warm up for the valleys. more on that coming up in a few minutes. mike now has a look at gas prices. yeah, other parts of the state are doing much better than we are california. we're holding steady. some are going up a little bit, but we're going to focus on the school starts for like santa clara unified today, where platinum gas on washington has santa clara's best back to school price at 381. livermore valley sees school starting. so we highlight 397 at dimond gas and mart in the middle here. that's the one on south front road and in the north bay. benicia schools start with the best local price of 489 at chevron on solano square. you can report those whether or not you're returning to school. you look at gasbuddy.com because you can school us on those prices. getting out to the roadways. it's a smooth, easy drive for most of the bay, but that crash we saw pop up on south 242 now sees a lot of slowing. this may be blocking one of your middle lanes south. 242 around solano way, coming down off of highway four, heading down in toward pleasant hill. that's one area, but no major injuries reported for the crash. and there's

scott. you bet. well, as we try to squeeze more into the summer a lot of families are also looking ahead of how to stretch as we were just talking about the back to school dollars. a recent survey out 1200 parents, 73% of them say that they were worried about higher prices for the items on their list. according to the federal data, prices have gone up nearly 25% over the last four years. last year, families expect, or this year to say, families expect, to spend $586 per student. this is just under the price spent last year. they say that they'll actually spend a little less on technology and really focus on finding those values from a quality standpoint. i'll be honest, i'm a mom and i can't really tell the difference. we shop at both types of stores. we buy name brand. we also just buy, you know, the more generic versions. and honestly, a marker is a marker. a crayon is a crayon. and so the difference there is the price that personal finance expert, they're saying that focusing on value families

5:32 am
through concord. yeah, that's ahead for some folks traveling on highway four coming down to 42. we talked about this earlier. crash reports said it only blocking one lane with some complaints of pain to someone who was in there, but not really officially injuries there. that's the good news. the bad news is now it's rippling back with the slowing southbound on to 42 past solano way coming off highway four, where there's the build out of concord. so that is a slow section of your commute through contra costa county. those who are cutting down bailey or down to kirker pass road, you're going to be avoiding that, though. slowing highway 37 at the top of the screen and the bay bridge starting to see a little more traffic. the volume on the span is just fine. the toll plaza now seeing more traffic. we'll track those metering lights. back to you. thanks, mike. in the south bay, parents are growing frustrated with their school district as their children head back to school this morning. today in the bay's bob redell joining us live from the alum rock union school district in san jose. so bob, parents there upset over a number of things out there, including possible school closures. correct. good morning, jim, marcus and laura

here in the alum rock union school district in the south bay. it's home to 21 schools here in san jose, like linda vista, vista elementary behind me. but now, because of declining enrollment, board members are preparing to close nine of these schools by the fall of 2025. so it would be a year from now. now the district had 10,000 students enrolled before covid. today, it's down to around 7600. you might recall a few weeks ago, parents gathered outside district headquarters to vent their frustrations about not only the closures, but the fact that the district is starting the school year without a permanent superintendent. and there's also this lawsuit by 11 students claiming the district conspired to hide sex assaults by a music teacher who is now in prison. some fear that lawsuit could bankrupt the district. and on top of all of that, parents say the board has not communicated well with them. it doesn't feel like there's the collaboration we'd like to see. we're here to give them another chance to be here to have that conversation. i'm concerned about my child,

just because we don't know what the future entails. oh, i understand that the parents are frustrated, and, i want to reassure the parents that, as a member of the board, i'm committed to meeting the parents wherever they are. by majority vote, the board already kicked out the board president in may, just months after firing the district superintendent. now, the board has said it plans to announce the new superintendent at its regular meeting next month on september 12th. some parents are even floating the idea of student walkouts or recall of board members. if this turmoil doesn't end reporting live here in san jose, bob redell. today in the bay. all right, bob, thank you. the dui suspect accused of slamming his car into two san jose police community service officers killing. one of them is scheduled to be arraigned today. prosecutors now say the suspect, 44 year old juan huerta palacio, has a previous dui history. the

you know that, shark sighting that happened last week, as well as an unconfirmed shark sighting this weekend, has prompted authorities to, you know, warn the public to be cautious and aware in the water. as i mentioned, it is hard to imagine what to do. you're supposed to stay cool, calm and collected. and that is what ian walters did in that situation. he's a sixth grade teacher at head-royce in oakland. he and a buddy were out on their kayaks fishing off the coast of half moon bay. they were in open water, not too far from pillar point, and that is when an unexpected visitor tagged along on their fishing trip. lovely fishing, beautiful water. and then i noticed a very large dorsal fin behind my buddy's kayak. and then another very large tail behind the dorsal fin, and i let him know that there was a shark behind him. and, we talked about it briefly, and the shark followed. my buddy for maybe 2 or 3 minutes, just very slow, nothing threatening of any kind. there

he is now, the shark eventually circled around and started following ian's kayak until they floated off towards some seals. and then the shark disappeared under water. ian says he may not be rushing to get back in the water anytime too soon, but he values learning firsthand about the shark's natural behavior. it was simply curious, you know, it was just there because that's where it lives. and we were in its, you know, house essentiall. and it had to check us out. well, last night, pacifica police posted about an unconfirmed shark sighting around noon on saturday, august 10th. that happened here at linda maher beach. according to authorities, a surfer reported seeing a shark approximately 200 yards from shore west of the main beach parking lot. the shark was described as six feet in length, no aggressive behavior was reported. now, authorities say shark sightings like the unconfirmed one here at linda maher beach, as well as

5:40 am
be nice and cool for drop off time. we're in the upper 50s walking to school under sunshine and a nice, comfortable morning. it's also going to be a very comfortably warm afternoon with highs in the low 80s today, a breezy wind, mostly sunny and we'll see a high of 90 in concord. while in oakland it will be in the mid 70s. novato today 84 degrees and upper 70s for palo alto. really just depending on your location as to what kind of weather you'll feel. but it will be very much like yesterday, maybe a degree or two warmer than it was for yesterday afternoon. and then as we go into tomorrow, some of our temperatures remain the same. but notice that the south county will be in the upper 80s and a few more low 90s in the east bay, so we'll talk more about that coming up. mike, you're looking at the traffic ahead of us. yeah, because a lot of times i'm recording what happened or we're still tracking after it happened a while ago. but here we're looking ahead toward the bay bridge toll plaza. the volume in the metering lights should all be active over the

next 20 minutes. we'll see this build. this is tuesday, and things are moving pretty nicely here. we're looking at a slowdown and coming off of the area of san rafael going over toward richmond. so that's counter commute. and this crash on 242 still causing more slowing south right around solano way. that's it for the morning commute. but as we look forward toward the afternoon and evening, we know there's going to be congestion over here getting on to and off of that bay bridge, i-80 and westbound interstate 80 and 101. but over here by oracle park, there will be another game tonight. so there may be congestion off of the 280 extension king street. this is our second of four games in that in that city, that ballpark. so we're watching for more crowds again as you get out of work through the area, perhaps blending in in the south bay, we are looking at a pretty standard build. we always predict this happening right about now. it's 541, right on schedule for north 87, but then again, you might have some delays, some adjustments for those transit lines. keep that in mind. kicked in yesterday. and as we look at this note from vta, it's now the blue and green line that they have disruption as well, not just the minor
5:42 am
schedule change watch for those schedules, but also the train maintenance for the light rail lines. and so that now hits between bonaventure and bay point. back to you. thanks, mike. coming up helping schools go green next on today in the bay, the south bay nonprofit helping teachers save money in the classroom. and the way the efforts it's also helping our climate in crisis and abortion officially will be on the ballot in arizona. and that's going to drive a lot of people to the polls in that battleground state. plus do my little pool thing so i'll give a hoot what you do. say, girl, i know you look too tame. i'll be shooting that shot like two k girl i know. tell em i'm tell em i'm barack obama is letting us know what he is listening to. we have that full list to share with you coming up if you just stick around. and also your favorite songs didn't make the list. well, we'll see. holding yo seat. nour

direction dublin's commute. we'll also see folks on the local streets as we have the dublin schools coming back online, same as livermore valley. we're watching for those pedestrians and different traffic flow around the bay as we adjust to those schools opening over the next few weeks. looking at the san mateo bridge, also a very clear, easy drive. you can see the flat section, these taillights, as well as heading over the high rise to the peninsula. and that first
5:46 am
day of school forecast for livermore valley will start out at 60 degrees, nice and sunny at pick up time will be in the mid 80s and a nice warm afternoon get slightly hotter tomorrow, so we'll take a look at that in the full microclimate forecast for now, let's talk about our climate in crisis. a south bay nonprofit is celebrating 30 years of supporting education and becoming environmentally conscious. resource area for teachers for teaching, or raft has been helping bay area teachers add to their stem curriculum, donated from items and some have come from silicon valley tech companies. it's one of the best warehouse memberships you could have, especially if you're a teacher or in any kind of education. their goal is to save these items from the landfill so that students get hands on learning, and parents and educators can save money. here's ceo jason morella. if you have items to donate, we are here and please
5:47 am
donate it because the right people are going to benefit from it. it's going to help teachers. it's going to help parents. it's going to help the community, but it's also going to help the environment because we will repurpose items so that they don't go to a landfill. and they don't hurt the environment, and they're repurposed in a way that's teaching kids and the next generation how to be environmentally friendly. raft is also aware of their transportation emissions. they have an electric maker mobile that they drive to bring those stem learning tools to schools, and right now they're having a huge back to school sale that runs through friday. you can find out more details about raft and about climate change in the bay area. it's on our website, nbcbayarea.com, and click on the climate in crisis tab. back to you. thanks, kerry. love that story. really a win win there. all right. turning now to decision 2020 for elon musk. and donald trump talked about their vision for america in a conversation on x last night. yeah scott mcgrew has been
5:48 am
joining us now okay. so scott musk very careful to call it a conversation, not an interview, not an interview. that's exactly right. he wanted people to understand this would be a sharing of a vision, not an adversarial type of interview with tough questions for trump, what it was for the first 40 minutes was nothing. as technical problems once again plagued the former twitter, the same way it did for ron desantis. eventually it did get under way. here's trump describing the attempt on his life. i'm a believer now. i'm more of a believer, i think, and a lot of people have said that to me. a lot of great people have said that to me, actually, but it was a it was amazing that i happened to be turned just at that perfect angle. and, all because i put down a chart on immigration that showed that the numbers were so great. i love that chart even more. maybe it's a sign. maybe that's a sign you know, it's an immigration sign. musk blamed a hack attack called a denial of service for the delay and glitches in the
5:49 am
interview. but many experts rolled their eyes. we'll explain why in business and tech coming up at six. harris campaign quick to pounce reposting trump making fun of desantis glitchy interview back in 2023 and calling musk and trump, quote, self-absorbed rich guys who can't run a live stream in 2024. harris's choice for vice president, minnesota governor tim walz, will campaign on his own today in los angeles. he'll speak to afscme. that is a union of government workers. more than a million americans are part of that union, including walz. back when he was a highly important video here, even if it was shot on a cell phone. it's the arizona secretary of state signing the document that puts the question of abortion rights on the ballot in arizona. this fall, after organizers shattered the record for the number of signatures gathered for an initiative in the key battleground state, prop 19 would increase the amount of time for a woman to make a
5:50 am
decision from 15 weeks to 24 weeks, as we have discussed before, putting abortion on the ballot draws democrats to the polls. also on that ballot, a choice between harris and trump. other news a judge in new york state says that robert kennedy jr, who rents a bedroom in a house in new york, does not live in new york. she called it a sham residence. kennedy's wife and family and pets all live in california. the judge ruled. the court finds kennedy's testimony that he may return to new york in the bedroom to reside with his wife, family members, multiple pets, and all of his personal belongings to be highly improbable, if not preposterous. now, kennedy is from california. that's where his house is, and that puts his campaign in an awkward position. his running mate, billionaire nicole shanahan, also lives in california. constitution doesn't
5:51 am
bar a president and vice president from being from the same state, but it basically prevents that team from winning that state. the new york decision may also remove kennedy from the ballot in new york. laura. see what happens. thank you. scott. well, the mtv video music awards are being pushed back to not clash with the upcoming presidential debate. the vmas were originally scheduled for september 10th. that's when vice president kamala harris and former president donald trump will debate on abc news now. the awards show will happen one day later on the 11th, from the ubs arena in new york. this year's performers include sabrina carpenter chapel rowan and camila cabello. well, new for you this morning. there may be an ocean's worth of water hiding underneath mars, so new research claims that there is water 12 miles beneath the planet's crust. that finding is based on seismic measurements from nasa's mars insight lander, which detected more than 1300 marsquakes before running out of
5:52 am
power just two years ago. oceanographers say that it would have likely seeped from that surface billions of years ago. this is when mars had rivers and lakes. scientists do emphasize this does not mean that there is life on the red planet, not just yet. not moving just yet. well trending this morning. former president barack obama summer playlist is out. all right, so let's just say that the former president has a very diverse style. oh, my good lord. cause i'ma pump me up a double shot of whiskey. they know me and jack daniels gotta hit the streets back. there's a party downtown near fifth street. everybody at the bar. so he shared the songs that he's been jamming to all summer long. yesterday on instagram, like country singer shaboozey landing. this is on the list with a bar song, tipsy. also on that list, billie eilish, tommy richardson's song of the summer, million dollar baby. and there was actually some classic artists on that mix, like the supremes, tupac,
5:53 am
rolling stones and etta james. not too bad. okay, that baby shark didn't make it, you see. oh my god. and he tries to. don't start, guys. don't start. we don't need that in our heads on a tuesday morning. wait till wednesday or thursday. all right. head to the beach. yeah, i guess so. people for the inland areas have been dealing with some high heat, but it's been nice and cool for the coast. and this morning we're in the low 60s in san jose, upper 50s for walnut creek and palo alto. and it's in the mid 50s in san francisco. really beautiful start to our two day morning and in santa rosa it is chilly, only 50 degrees right now, and we will see low 50s for the next couple of hours as we go throughout the rest of the morning into the afternoon, sunny skies and gradually warming temperatures in the south bay will see highs in the low to mid 80s. even some upper 80s as you head down to morgan hill and gilroy. and for the
5:54 am
east bay, we're in the mid 70s from oakland down to fremont, with some mid 80s for much of the east bay and a few spots hitting 90 degrees. we'll see that in concord and antioch as well as brentwood for today, and some low 70s for san mateo. while along the coast. we're not going to see much sunshine today. it will be in the low 60s there. upper 60s for downtown and in the mission district and for the north bay. it's in the mid 80s from napa to sonoma and upper 80s, as well as low 90s farther to the north. so we are seeing some warm weather, high pressure still in control across the region. but what we'll have more of an influence on a cooling trend will be along the coastline. we'll see this low dipping in that with its counterclockwise wind flow is going to help push in some of that cool ocean breeze across the bay area, and that will help bring down those temperatures by a few degrees this weekend. we're not seeing anything really significant changing here over the next week. we're going from upper 80s to mid 80s and then
5:55 am
back to the upper 80s. so we're in a pretty steady weather pattern here, but at times the wind may get a little bit more gusty, especially for the weekend. but you can see overall our temperatures not changing too much here. and in san francisco we continue to see upper 60s for highs into early next week. mike, you're looking for some better speeds in concord. we're seeing that for part of the area heading south on 242. the crash cleared and now we've had good recovery. in fact it's been a few minutes. so clearing now cleared as far as the flow goes. more traffic does head over on highway 4 to 680 to take the corner. but again, you're watching. you know it's clear to cut that corner. saves you a few seconds there. meanwhile, the build happened, so that was a great timing for things to clear on south. 242 the build for highway four pretty standard. no major issues coming across the benicia, the carquinez bridge north of there, standard pattern for highway 37 and the crash right around central for westbound 80, the east shore freeway that cleared to the shoulder. in fact, i think it cleared off the
5:56 am
roadway. so good recovery. there was a backup for a few minutes. still have slowing out of san rafael coming east. counter commute across the bridge from centerville to richmond. but outside of that, everything's moving well. the bay bridge toll plaza doesn't have a stack up just yet, but it's starting to build. and this is starting to clear. that's the first slowing you see for 101. again, the next one, about 640, should be like clockwork. back to you. all right. thanks, mike. well, happening now, a peek at the meteor shower continuing after starting in july. now, if the sky is clear, people will be able to see it as many as 100 meteors shooting through the sky every hour. the shower continues through the rest of the month, but meteors may not be as visible at night. now that is not the only show in the sky there. this is the time lapse showing the northern lights across the sky. scientists do say that the solar storm is triggering a colorful light, and the lights may be seen as far south as alabama. all the way to northern california. scientists do believe they could make another appearance tonight. and
